COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Dr. Martha M. Larson

RICHARD B. TALBOT MEMORIAL AWARDDr. Victoria Simpson

Martha M. Larson is a professor of radiology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. A faculty member at the college since 1986, she has crafted a long and distinguished career in teaching, research, and service.

Impacting thousands of veterinary students, Larson has taught radiology in the classroom and the clinical environment, and has advised and instructed post-doctoral trainees in the college’s radiology residency program, which she has directed for 30 years.

Known as a compassionate and ef fective instructor, Larson is the recipient of numerous awards, including the college’s Teaching Excellence Award and the Merck Agvet Award for Creativity in Teaching. In 2020, she received the college’s inaugural Outstanding Faculty Alumni Award in recognition of her decades of service and commitment to students and alumni alike.

Board-certif ied in radiology by the American College of Veterinary Radiology, Larson is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Veterinary Medicine Association. Her research interests include pancreatic and hepato-biliary disease, imaging of pulmonary disease, and ultrasound imaging.

After earning undergraduate degrees in wildlife biology from the University of Montana and in biology from the University of Georgia, Larson completed both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a master’s degree at The Ohio State University, followed by an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and a residency in radiology at Ohio State.

Each year, the veterinary student who has achieved the highest academic standing in the graduating class receives the Richard B. Talbot Memorial Award, named in honor of the college’s founding dean. The Class of 2021 valedictorian is Victoria Simpson, of Freehold, New Jersey, a graduate of the equine track.

Simpson, who earned a B.S. in animal science from Rutgers University, admits that she was a “horse-crazy little girl” whose love for science and animals led her to pursue veterinary medicine, the ideal marriage of her interests.

Noting that she was especially drawn to Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine because of the DVM Program’s focus on mental health, Simpson and her class acutely experienced the importance of a healthy work-life balance while navigating restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association student clubs, Simpson has accepted an ambulatory internship, transitioning into an associate veterinarian position, at Old Waterloo Equine Clinic in Rixeyville, Virginia. She is “really excited” because, she says, “I love the dynamic nature of ambulatory practice. You never know what you’ll find when you get on the farm.” In the long term, Simpson aspires to have her own equine practice.
