October 2013 Volume 55, Issue 10 The Pastor’s Perspective I’m sitting at my desk writing these words on the last day of September, 2013. As I reflect on the events of recent weeks, I’m reminded of two significant Mondays that were a part of this month: Monday the 16 th , and Monday the 23 rd . Both of them were days that I will not forget. Monday the 16 th was the day of the Navy Yard shooting, in which 12 victims lost their lives. As was the case with the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, many of us will never forget what we were doing when he heard the news of this tragic event. September 16 th was a reminder of how horrible life can be. Shootings, terrorist attacks, disease, earthquakes, car crash- es, hurricanes, and broken marriages are just a few examples of how excruciating life can be. With that awful picture painted in the background, let me share with you what happened on Monday, September 23 rd . That was the day Brody Michael Kersey was born. Brody is the son of church member Angie Kersey and the grandson of Deacon Mike Bible. I had the opportunity to meet this young man late in the afternoon on the day of his birth while visiting him and his mother at Alexandria Hospital. Brody didn’t have much to say. In fact, he slept throughout our visit. But while I was there I was blessed with the opportunity to hold him. There is nothing more peaceful that holding a sleeping child, and as I did so the tensions of the day drifted away. Shootings and cancer and heartache seemed far away. In Isaiah 11:6 there is a verse that says, “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, and the calf and the lion and yearling together; and a little child will lead them.” Isaiah was of course pointing us to the birth of the Messiah. But I think perhaps he was also speaking of the Brody’s of the world, who come bringing peace and joy and comfort to a world of chaos. Welcome, young Mr. Brody. You have already made a difference in my life. May God continue to use you to bring hope to our world. Our Mission To provide a loving, friendly, family atmosphere, where people can meet and serve Christ, communit y y and one another.

The Pastor’s Perspective

I’m sitting at my desk writing these words on the last day of September, 2013. As I reflect on the events of recent weeks, I’m reminded of two significant Mondays that were a part of this month: Monday the 16th, and Monday the 23rd. The 2013-14 School Year is off to a great start! We have 138 children enrolled in our program in ten

classes ranging from 1 year olds to Junior Kindergarten. All our classes are now having class on Fridays. We had 8 staff members attend the NorthStar Church Ministry Conference on September 21. The first three weeks have gone smoother than expected especially with the younger ones. We held our usual Back to School Coffee on September 24 and our first ever Back to School Night that evening to accommodate as many parents as possible with a PowerPoint slideshow and curriculum presentations by several of our teach-ers. Pastor Bart, Wilson Riley, and Ms. Christine taught the children about apples and helped them peel, slice and core apples with all the children.

In October, we have Splendid Portraits here to take individual pictures. We are holding our Innisbrook Fundraiser. If you are interested in supporting our preschool and purchasing some great wrapping papers or gift items, please see Teresa or I for a catalog. The Fire Department will be visiting on October 23 for Fire Safety Day and we will be having a Pumpkin Patch and a Fall Fest Parade at the end of the month. Our Staff will be holding an in-house Staff Training Day on October 16. Our Preschool Committee will meet in October as well.

As always, we have a full and exciting calendar. If you wish more details on any of this, please feel free to contact me.

TAKING NOTE ...

A New Associate Pastor. On September 22, 2013, VHBC installed Mr. Wilson Riley as our new Associate Pastor. We are indeed blessed to have had him and his wife, Patti, be part of our church family for several months now. Celebrating this special event, the Wilsons hosted a lovely luncheon with their extended family and church family present. (Who can forget the luscious chocolate cake we had for dessert?!) Born and raised in this area, Mr. Riley was an active youth member here at VHBC and also attended Edison High School. He received his Associate degree in ministry from Freedom Bible College and his degree in Bible from Liberty University. Parents of two children, Christian (now deceased) and Kim Garcia, the Rileys are also grandparents of four grandchildren. Both Rileys serve as teachers in Sunday classes for children and for adults. They are new members and already essential to our mission. Special Recognition. Recently celebrating her 90th birthday and still going strong is Ms. Pauline Carico, a long-time member here. Moving from Atlanta, GA, to Virginia back in the 60's, she worked for the Federal Govern-ment for years. Always smiling, this sweet, gentle spirit faithfully takes her place in Sunday morning Bible Study class, worship service, and in midweek prayer meetings. When you see her, wish her a "Happy Birth-day" and ask her about her daring days piloting an airplane all over the area!

VHBC Celebrated too, on September 15th! For VHBC it was our 56th year; this time with our own VHBC Praise Band opening the event! It was really wonderful to have several people returned to celebrate with us. Included in this group were our founding pastor, the Rev. Bill Davenport, and charter member, Ms. Margaret Bi-ble. Also present was our beloved administrative assistant/secretary, Ms. Elaine Thomas, who gave years of service here at VHBC and who always had a big smile--even on the phone her voice carried a big smile! And who was that special person that drove to and from Ft. Royal, VA, to pick up and then take home some of our special friends? None other than our own Ms. Pam Thomas.

The Only Foundation. "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ," 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV)

Children’s Ministry We are excited about the start of another ministry year! In September, we began using new lessons and launched a Kidz Praise & Worship on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. The Children’s ministry is in need of cooperative learning games to use during structured play time between our Sunday worship services. Through play, children will continue to connect with God and build relationships with each other. Some suggestions are listed below.

We are excited to have so many wonderful opportunities for kids to connect with Jesus. Please continue to pray for our children and the children’s ministry.

Do You Play an Instrument? There are many talented people in our congrega on.  We know for sure that we have members who play the flute, bass, drums,  guitar, keyboard, violin, trumpet, and trombone.  Are there any other instrumentalists out there?   We would love to put together an orchestra or ensemble for special occasions.  If you play an instrument and would be willing to be a part of such a group let Garry or Bart know.
