VIRGINIA AT THE ACC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP • Virginia has won three ACC tournament titles (1996, 2009, ‘11) – all in Durham. • UVa has won eight straight ACC tournament games in Durham. • UVa now has played in each of the 40 ACC tournaments. • Virginia is 51-64 all-time at the ACC Baseball Championship. • Under Brian O’Connor (since 2004), Virginia is 20-10 in the tournament.     cOgsWELL OUT WiTH FRacTURED FiNgER• Branden Cogswell suffered a fractured finger in prac-tice on May 4, breaking the middle finger on his right hand.• He had surgery to repair the break and will be reeval-uated prior to the ACC tournament.• Cogswell was having a sensational year, batting .346 (10th in ACC) with a .464 on base percentage (seventh).• Prior to his injury, Cogswell was the lone Cavalier to play in every game in 2013 and had reached base safely in 43 of 47 games this year.

    MccaRTHy aMassiNg HUgE ROOkiE yEaR• Virginia freshman Joe McCarthy has put together an impressive rookie campaign. He currently ranks second among all ACC freshmen in batting with a .333 average (16th overall).• He is second among ACC rookies in walks with 45 (fifth overall) and on base percentage at .460 (eighth overall).

    MccaRTHy a REgULaR ON basEpaTHs• Joe McCarthy was the only ACC player to reach base safely in every game this year until April 14 when he went 0-for-3 in the rain-shortened game at Georgia Tech.• He has reached base safely in 49 of his 52 games.• The rookie reached base safely in the first 36 games this year, the longest streak by a UVa player since Dan Grovatt reached base in 43 straight games in 2009.

    DOWNEs aN ExTRa-basE HiT MacHiNE • In his first year as the Cavaliers’ cleanup hitter, Bran-don Downes has been solid and is batting .327 with a .401 on base percentage.• Downes owns 34 extra-base hits and tops the team in home runs (8), triples (7), doubles (19), runs (60), RBI (56) and total bases (129). • Downes is first in the ACC in triples, fifth in doubles and eighth in home runs.• Downes ranks first on the team in hits (72) and runs and second in slugging (.586).

The UVa pitching staff has issued just 128 walks in 54 games, by far the fewest walks allowed in the ACC this year.     ViRgiNia TOps 100,000 iN aTTENDaNcE agaiN• Despite the chilly temperatures and poor weather earlier this year, Virginia ranks 12th nationally in total attendance (102,410) and 17th in average attendance (3,012) this year (third in ACC).• More than 100,000 fans have attended Cavalier games each of the past four seasons. UVa has ranked among the top 20 programs nationally in attendance each of the last four years.• UVa ranked 15th nationally in total attendance (112,281) and 19th in average attendance (3,208) last year.• Davenport Field seats 4,980 per game, slightly down this year after the addition of more chairback seats in place of the bleacher seats in the grandstand. • The entire reserved section in the grandstand sold out once again this year.

    WaDDELL sTRONg iN FiRsT yEaR• Southpaw Brandon Waddell has been a standout while serving as UVa’s Friday starter as a freshman.• He owns 71 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings this year; he ranks third among all freshmen nationally in strikeouts.• He was named one of Collegiate Baseball’s six Nation-al Players of the Week on Feb. 25 following a dominat-ing outing vs. Toledo.• In six innings, he struck out 15 batters, most by a UVa freshman hurler since Seth Greisinger fanned 15 against UNC in 1994. He allowed just six hits and one walk.• On Feb. 15 at ECU, Waddell became the first UVa freshman to make the opening-game start since Dave Sammons on Feb. 26, 1986, at William and Mary.

His streak of 90 straight starts, dating to 2011, was snapped March 2 in the first game of the DH.• Silverstein was the Cavaliers’ Saturday starter for most of 2012 after battling back from a pair of shoulder surgeries.• The two have been part of two ACC championship teams, three regional championship squads and two College World Series teams.

    cHaNgEs aT DaVENpORT FiELD• Davenport Field underwent several changes during the offseason.• A new sand-based playing surface has been installed. After removing the previous surface, crews put in a new irrigation and field drainage system (previous field had no drainage system).• The $1 million project also included the installation of a new synthetic warning track that runs in foul territory between the foul poles as well as new dugout flooring surfaces and a new FieldTurf collar behind home plate.• Home plate was moved in about five feet, creating more foul territory down the lines as well as new field dimensions: 332-370-404-370-332.• In separate projects, new chairback seats were added to replace the grandstand bleachers and a new video board was erected.

    O’cONNOR NaMED basEbaLL aMERica’s cOacH OF THE FiRsT HaLF• Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was tabbed the National Coach of the First Half by Baseball America on April 4. • The Cavaliers racked up a 27-3 record (9-3 ACC) at that point despite featuring a lineup of primarily sopho-mores and freshmen as well as a freshman-laden pitch-ing staff.

    Game 2, as Scott Silverstein tossed seven innings while allowing just a run, two hits and two walks while strik-ing out nine.• The Yellow Jackets took the rubber game, 3-2, in a game that was halted in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain.• Reed Gragnani had a big series, going 6-for-8 with a home run and three RBI. Derek Fisher was 5-for-11 (.455) with a homer and three RBI.
