    IntroductionThisfindingaidrepresentsapreliminarydescriptionofthepapersandlettersofGloucesterpoetandphilosopherVincentFerrini,(1913-2006).Additionalmaterialsandtheirsubsequentsortingwillcontinueinthefutureaswereceivethem.Addendatothefindingaidwillbeincludedasneeded.Ferrini’spersonallibrary,alsoheldinpartbytheCapeAnnHistoricalAssociation,isnotdescribedaspartofthepapersbutshouldberegardedbyresearchersasanimportantprimarysource.

    BiographicalNoteVincentFerrini,whohasbeencalled“thelastsurvivingProletarianPoet”(accordingtoGeorgeF.ButterickintheDictionaryofLiteraryBiographyVolume48:AmericanPoets,1880-1945,quotingWalterLowenfels),wasbornintheshoe-factorytownofLynn,Massachusetts,in1913,thesonofasometimes-employedshoemakerandhiswifewhohademigratedfromItalyin1909.Hischildhoodwasatoughone;ababysisterwaskilledinherhighchairbyanexplodingstove,andFerrini,sittingnexttoher,wasseriouslyinjured.Asayouth,hewasactivelydiscouragedfromwritingpoetrybyahighschoolEnglishteachertowhomhehadshownhisverses.Hisfather,too,discouragedhim,tellingtheboythathecamefromthewrongsocialclasstobeapoet.Ferrinitookaseriesofjobsunrelatedtowriting,includinganine-yearstintataGeneralElectricplantinhishometownbeginningin1941.However,hecontinuedtowriteandreadduringhisfreetime.Hisearlypoetrywasprotestwriting.Hisfirstbook,writteninthelate1930’sandpublishedin1941,wasNoSmoke,astudyofthepeopleandscenesofLynn,whichButterickcomparestoEdgarLeeMasters’SpoonRiverAnthology.Giventhetimeandplace,thecentralsubjectofthebookisthedismal,impoverishedlifeoftheinhabitantsofafactorytown.Ferrini’ssecondbook,the1943Injunction,reflectsthehistoricalshifttowartimefactoryproductiononthehomefront.Butterick,whocallsFerrini“theauthenticrepresentativeoftheindustrialworker,oneofthemostperfectexamplesoftheproletarianpoetpossible,::singlesoutthefinalpoem,“TalkingTenements,”forpraise.Aswell,praisecamefromDepressionnovelistMikeGold,whocalledthebook“genuineasasoldier’swoundorarowofstampingmachines.”CriticDavidDaiches,writingintheNewRepublic,found“skillandeffectiveness”inmanyindividuallines,thoughhecomplainedofalackofclosureinthepoems.PearlStrachan,intheChristianScienceMonitor,foundtheworktobe“provocative”and“foodforthought.”PoetryreviewerLeoKennedy,commentingaboutthepoems’fierceenergy,wrotethatFerrini“hasanastonishingfacilityformakingsuccessfulpoemsaboutworkadayinstitutions…FerrinithinksclearlyabouthimselfandotherAmericanworkingstiffs,andaboutwhatthereisinitforthem,andthewordsmostlyfitthethoughtwiththeclarityandemphasisofaburstinggrenade.”Ferrinicontinuedintheproletarianveinuntil1949.ShortlythereafterhemovedfromLynntoGloucester,Massachusetts.Inthatyear,hemetthepoetCharlesOlson,whohadsoughthimoutafterreadingoneofFerrini’spoems.FerrinicameunderOlson’sinfluence,andthetwomenformedatempestuousbutenduringfriendship.InthebooksSeaSprung(1949)andTheInfinitePeople(1950),Ferrinicelebratedthesights,sounds,andindividualsoftheseasidecommunityofGloucester,ofteninshort,imagisticlines.The“specialcharm”ofthismiddleperiodofFerrini’swork,accordingtoButterick(incommentsinconnectionwiththe1952TheHouseofTime),“isFerrini’sabilitytoachievemasterythroughmystery,andmysterythroughsimplicity.”

    The1950’sand1960’scontinuedtobeyearsofliteraryexperimentationforFerrini.AnunprovokedliteraryattackbyOlsoninLetterVoftheMaximusPoemscausedFerrinitobecomeapublicfigure,andtherefore,ironically,toberecognizedbyalargersegmentofthereadingpublic.Ferrinitookaforgivingstance,andthetwomenresumedtheirfriendship.The1950’sand1960’swerealsotimesofpersonalchangeforFerrini.Inthelatterdecade,hisfirstmarriageended,hissecondbegan,andhisyoungestchild,Deirdre,diedofleukemiaatagesixteen.WhenOlsondiedin1970,itmayhavecontributedtoFerrini’semergenceintoathirdperiodofhiswork,oneinwhichsocialandpersonalpreoccupationswerecombined.AccordingtoButterick,Ferriniwasnowfreetobecome“thepoetofGloucester,theDanteofhiscity,andtocreateanewworldofauthorityabouthimself.”HebecameanactiveparticipantintheciviclifeofGloucester,andsometimesworkedwithlocalartistsonthevisualaspectoftheproductionofhisbooks.Hebecame,asButterickputsit,a“psychicexplorer,”forwhom“heartcriesgivewaytomultiplemysteriesachingfordefinition.”Ferrini’sSelectedPoems,publishedin1976,gainedhimstillmorereaders.AsDanielL.GuillorydeemedinaLibraryJournalreviewofSelectedPoems,Ferrinihadbecome“avisionarycelebrantofthemysticseaandstars,albeitonewhohasn’tlosthiskeenperception”oftheworld’seconomicpain.ConnieFletcher,assessingthevolumeforBooklist,emphasizedtheearliersocialprotestpoetry,whichsheclaimedhadbeen“toolongneglected,”andfoundthesnapshotsofshabbystreetcharacters“startling.”AChoicereviewer,commentingonFerrini’sdistinctprogressthroughaseriesofartisticstages,commentedthatthepoethad“escaped[d]categorizingatlast.”Whileadmittingthepoet’sdidactictendencies,therevieweraddedthat“hehastoughnessinhimandsomefirst-ratepoetry…inmanyofhimpoemsFerriniexhibitsboththewrathandtendernessassociatedwithBlake.”Ferrinispokeforhimselfintheformofproseinthe1988autobiographyHermitoftheClouds:TheAutobiographyofVincentFerrini.CritiquingthebookintheAmericanBookReview,poetPaulMetcalfcalledthesectionsonOlsonparticularlywellwritten;asawhole,hetermedtheautobiographya“lovelybook.”PeterS.Kidd,areviewerforSmallPressReview,foundthechapteronDeirdre“thebestpieceofwritinginthebook.”Kiddfoundthebook’slackoflinearnarrativetobeaweakness,butcalledtheworkasawhole,“abonylittlebook,insightful,notbrooding,easytoread.”Atthatpoint,Ferrinihadbegunpublishinghismagnumopus,themulti-volumepoemKnowFish,asubstantialstudyofGloucesteranditspeople.Individualsectionsweremarkedlydistinctfromoneanother:thesecondsectionofthefirstvolumeiswritteninItalian-Americandialect,whileanothersectionconsistsentirelyofletterstoaneditor.Reviewingthethirdvolume,whichwassubtitledTheCommunityofSelfandincludedBooksIVandV,TerryKennedyofSmallPressReviewgushed,“NotsinceWaltWhitmanandEmilyDickinsonhasanAmericanpoetsosuccessfullyexpressedtheuniversalthemesoflove,death,andimmortalitywithsuchpassionatepersonalfeeling.TheresultisamysticaldirectnesscomparabletothatfoundintheworkofWilliamBlake.TherearesomethatwouldsayFerriniisBlakereincarnated!”Itwas

    rewardingpraiseindeedforapoetofperseverance,whomButterickcalled“amodelofendurance.”Ferrini,accordingtoButterick,hadproduced“aperfecthandfulofhonestandenduringpoems,”andhadsuccessfullytransmutedhimselffromangryprotestertosensitivemysticwithoutgivingupthepositivetraitsofhisformerrole.TheMagiImagewaspublishedin1995andheraldedasapoeticdiagramoftheconveyanceoftheuniomystica(mysticalunion)fromPersiatoGloucester.TheDictionaryofPhilosophyandReligionbyW.L.Reese,definesuniomysticaas“themysticalexperienceinwhichthesoulofmanissaidtoenterintounionwithGod.”KennethWarren,writinginHouseOrgan,relatedthatFerrini“usesthenaturalphenomenaofGloucestertofurthertheenactmentofmythindailyliving.”Havingnoacademicor“modernist”credentials,WarrenassertedthatFerriniinsteadprovidesuswithhis“sharptongueraisedheavenward[and]preparedinsimplemeasures.”WarrenfeltthatFerriniwas,attheageofeighty-five,searchingfortheextremewithinthelinesofTheMagiImage,thedefinitiveplaceforhiswork,ashenearedthetimeofhisowndeath.VincentFerrinidiedDecember24,2006
