Deepika Padukone was the unanimous choice for the Inauguralissue. She is classy, talented and has been appreciated for herperformances by stars of yesteryears too.
Talking about yesteryear stars, its a pity that the depiction offamily values and Indian culture is diminishing in Hindi movies. While talking to veterans in the industry, they are quick toreminicise their childhood memories about the Indian cultureand deep rooted family values shown in hindi films of the 60sand 70s. The Indian family values of the Rajshri Productionsfilms like Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, Maine Pyaar Kiya and so on,are gradually eroding and the new generation is fast adapting tothe culture as shown in Hollywood films.
We have compiled the best and the notable Hindi movies of theyear gone by. Some of them have not done well commercially, yet have garnered critis appeal. Like Om Dar Ba Dar, GulabiGang, Ankhon Dekhi and Lakshmi to name a few. Yet therewere other well made films and successful at the box office likeMary Kom, City Lights and Queen - the best film by KanganaRanaut.
There is also a crisp feature on the girls to be watched out inFilmy Town. Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, Taapsee Pannuand Evelyn Sharma are here to stay in the Bollywood filmindustry. This new gen actresses are smart enough to chooseand sign their films. They are aware of what is happening in thebusiness circuit alongwith keeping an eye on the cinema for theFilm Festivals.
Internationally acclaimed director Susanne Bier talks aboutworking with Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper on Serenawhich is yet to be released in India. It has evoked a buzzamongst the critics. Susanne was speaking at a Master classfor the National Film and Television School students.
The BAD girl Sherlyn Chopra was quite honest in her interviewand got emotional at moments. We had to take a break. No,she wasn't putting on the act, we could feel and see it in her.Wishing her all the best.
Regional Cinema has often been neglected by the mainstreamfilmy magazines. We have featured Vijay Maurya, who haswritten the story of an upcoming Marathi film about IdenticalTwin sisters falling in love with the same boy and how the funcomedy and romance grows in the back drop of a college life. Itis his directoral debut.
Finally, Amit Tiwari pens down his Journey as the Director in thefilm industry. It is not only the actors who have to start from thescratch, the technical professionals too face an uphill task inthe field. Amit has also suggested some tips to the aspiringdirectors.
An healthy sign with the new generation stepping in the filmyindustry.

There really hasn’t beenany great film this year. What we have thereforeis a list of pleasurablefilms, some of solid tech-nique, some with strongriveting themes andsome with stand-out per-formances.
Ashim Ahluwalia’s MissLovely’ starring an ensemblecast and boasting of an inter-nationally renownedNawazuddin Siddiqui, scoreda hit on the festival circuit butthe lay critics and audiencefound it wanting. neverthelessthis was one of the better ef-forts of the year!
The NFDC produced KamalSwaroop’s ‘Om Dar Ba Dar’never could find a release date in the what-seems-like decades after it’s making. Un-apologetic about it’s hallucinatory (readexperimental) realm, this film was differ-ent from the run-of-the-mill and thereforeinteresting.
Nila Madhab Panda’s ‘Babloo Happy Hai’tried hard to make HIV/Aids awarenessacceptable to the masses but the sur-reptitious story-telling format was a littletoo stretched out to be completely en-gaging. Nevertheless this film had astrong enough take away.
Vinil Mathew’s ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ fromthe Karan Johar stable was funny enoughand had sparkling chemistry between thelead pair Siddharth Malhot ra andParineeti Chopra to add some excitementto the mad-cap dramatics.
Nishta Jain’s documentary ‘Gulabi Gang’pre-empted the Madhuri-Juhi starrer onthe same subject and also managed tomake a better mark at the BO. Certainlyworthy of a Best Tag!
Vikas Bahl’s ‘Queen’ warmed the cock-les of our hearts with it’s subjective, ear-nest appeal and Kangana Ranaut added
to the magic with a heart-felt perfor-mance! The film also managed to sparka minor frenzy at the BO!
Rajat Kapoor’s dark com-edy ‘Ankhon Dekhi’ wasquite surprisingly fluid andengaging with SanjayMishra giving a gem of aperformance as the angstridden protagonist.
Nagesh Kukunoor’s‘Lakshmi’ was a raw andhurtful take on female traf-ficking. It was a pleasantexperience even though anotable one!
Girish Malick’s ‘Jal’ set ina desert was cinemato-graphically poignant eventhough the telling of the talewasn’t smooth, dramatic orexciting enough.
Feroz Abbas Khan’s Politi-cal satire ‘Dekh TamashaDekh’ was verbally pungentand quite well knitted. Amole Gupte’s children’s
fantasy ‘ Hawaa Hawaai’ tried to givenon-traditional sports (Skating) a broaderband-with in the mainstream and man-aged to do that quite successfully.
Sandeep Verma’s thriller ‘Manjunath’based on true life incidents( about whistle-blowers risking their lives to exposewrong-doing in the public sector) wasquite a triumph in terms of tension andaffect.
Mrutyunjay Devvrat’s ‘Children Of War’dared to focus on the tortured and thedamned during the Bangladesh uprising.Though small-budget it still managed topack a sucker punch.
Hansal Mehta’s ‘Citylights’ focused onthe struggle for survival of a flop-business-man turned security personnel in a bigcity. A quickie from the Bhatt camp, itdid not match up to Mehta’s much cel-ebrated effort ‘Shahid’ even though it hadnote-worthy performances from RajKumar Rao, Patralekha and especially-Manav Kaul.
Nitin Kakkar’s maiden directorial effort‘Filmistan’ was unarguably the best ef-fort of the entire list –in terms of tech-

nique and content. Wonderful mo-ments, striking performances and su-premely confident treatment make it aan unforgettable experience.
Samar Shaikh’s Vidya Balan Starrer‘BobbyJasoos’ was surprisingly engag-ing. Though hackneyed and convolutedtowards the end it did have some reallysolid moments of entertainment. Ali Fazaland Arjan Bajwa spice up the entertain-ment.
Ajay Mehra’s ‘Bazaar-E-Husn,’ a perioddrama may be a little old-fashioned andoutdated but nevertheless it had somesuccinctly engaging moments and somereasonably good performances fromReshmi Ghosh and Yashpal Sharma.
Shashank Khaitan’s Varun Dhawan, AliaBhatt starrer Humpty Sharma KiDulhaniya may have gone over-the-topover a designer ghagra-choli but itcouldn’t really dent Varun Dhawan’s easyhistrionics or personable charm.
Homi Adajania’s ‘Finding Fanny ‘ wasquirky and intermittently engaging.
Oomung Kumar’s sports-bio ‘Mary Kom’was not as accomplished as ‘Paan SinghTomar’ or as engaging as ‘Bhaag Milkha
Bhaag’ but some true-grit moments help itmake the cut.
Habib Faisal’s‘Daawat-E-Ishq’ hadsome interesting in-gredients but the over-all concoction wasn’tas rich as the milieuit was set in.
Vishal Bharadwaj’s vi-sually rich ‘Haider’had some interestinglystructured momentsof conflict. But theoverall effect was notall encompassing.
Ravindra Gautam’spolit ical sat ire‘Ekkees Topon KiSalaami’ had terrificperformances fromAnupam Kher andUttara Baokar to lendit solidity.
Harry Baweja’s ani-mated historical‘Chaar Sahibzaade’about Guru GovindSinghji and his four
sons was a pleasant surprise. The au-dio performances were audience pleas-ing and the animation was certainly wor-thy of praise!
Rang Rasiya –Ketan Mehta’smuch delayedbiopic on cel-ebrated painter Raja RaviVerma’s colorfullife was sexuallywell-e ndowedbut the overall ef-fect was wellshort of exciting.
Sarovar Banka’sShabana Azmistarrer ‘A DecentAr ra ng ement ’and Ravi Kumar’s‘Bhopal A PrayerFor Rain’ are de-cent enough In-dian-origin ef -forts from the In-t e r n a t i o n a larena.Raj Nidimoru andKrishna DK’s
‘Happy Ending’ was a fun outing thanksto Govinda’s stellar turn as an ageing su-perstar on a career down-turn.
Amit Vats’ ‘Titoo MBA’ had a freshstoryline, some engaging performancesfrom Nishant Dahiya Pragya Jaiswal andAbhishek Kumar and also had peppymusic to match!
Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s ‘ZedPlus’ wasentertaining mainly because of some in-triguing moments and able performancesfrom Adil Hussain, MonaSingh andMukeshTiwari.
Amit Masurkar’s debut directorial effort‘Sulemani Keeda’ was a sincere andearnest effort portraying Bollywood as acreatively challenged set of wonder-boys!
Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly is chillingly coldin it’s assay of demented reasoning. It’sdifferent!
Raj Kumar Hirani doesn’t bother to caterhis films to any particular set- insteadhe creates experiences that are hard toput aside even though they may be lessthan aesthetically inclined.
The currently (needlessly) controversialPK is typical of his oeuvre- simplistic andimminently logical. You just can’t beatthat!

Changing valuesin Indian cultureAs depicted in Cinema over the years
By LOKESH SHASTRI
The Indian cultureand Cinema havebeen changingover time andthis has wellbeen depicted inf ilms, in fact
many times the films have beeninstrumental to changes in theculture and the way the newer gen-erations actually think or are madeto think. In fact the western cul-ture has a profound effect on thefilms as well as the Indian culture. The people generally aspire to bemore westernised and believe thatfashion originates from the westand films help spread the westernculture.
The rich heritage of Indian culturethat we were once proud of in thesixties slowly started eroding andgradually the younger generationshave become more independentand have accepted new ideas from western cultures. For example, sexual expression and display of affec-tion have been kept behind closed doors for the mostpart in India for many generations, while these thingshave been culturally accepted in the U.S., and otherwestern countries for a long time now.
The censors too have gradually given in and have al-lowed scenes, which were unthinkable in the 60's and70's. The joint family system has now become nuclearfamily system; respect for elders is now at an all timelow and tolerance levels have also gone down.
The films in the 60's were more family oriented, whereas in the 70's it was romance and love mar-riage, the 80's glorified revolt anger aggression, crimesmuggling and rebellion towards society and nowmovies are showing acceptability to ‘Live-in’ relation-ships and Gay relationships which was taboo in eventhe 80's,
Another very important change that wehave noticed is the emotional connect ofall cast and crew of films during the 60'sand 70's where everyone would put theirheart and soul to bring out their best inthe movies. The music directors likeNaushad, Shankar Jaikishan, KalyanjiAnandji, OP Nayyar would take their timeand create soul stirring music that canstill cause goosebumps to the people ofthat era. Genius poets would write beau-tiful poetry and superstar singers likeMohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, LataMangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle would put lifeinto the songs that are still popular till to-day and Superstar heroes like DilipKumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, RajeshKhanna, and even Amitabh Bachchanwould brilliantly create masterpieces oncelluloid.
Today movies are made keeping in mindpure numbers in box office collections and

Rs. 100 crore is a benchmark. The movies are made and aftera year or so hardly anyone even remembers them or theirsongs.
Technology has also played an important role over the yearsand films have become technically better over time. Right fromthe blurry - Black / White films to Fujicolour, to Eastmancolourto Technicolour to Kodak and now Digital, the quality of filmshas improved over time, the new editing systems have cut theediting time of films from months to mere days using non
linear edit ing ma-chines like FCP, AVIDetc. The Special ef-fects, Graphics,Amimation and 3Dhave changed themovie making Arenaand given the power tothe storytellers tomesmerise the audi-ence whatever theycan imagine.
This has given the cin-ema patrons to enjoymasterpieces like theTitanic, Avatar 3D andmany such brilliantworks of art.
The movie watchinghas also changed over
the years, from single screen theaters, showing 35mm 4:3, tocinemascope to 70 mm to multiscreen theatres, to Inox Dome,to the new Cineapolis 4Dx, as well as the home viewing onLCD / LED screens to Computer screens to Ipads, iPods, andmobiles.
However traveling all over the world and on extensive researchwe have found that despite the changing values and culturedepicted in films, at heart we are Indians and deep inside uswe still have the same Indian culture and our values are stillthe best and our happiness quotient is still high. Even todaywe are more attached to our friends and family compared toour western counterparts.

She is the only Indian girl to be featured inPLAYBOY magazine. Sherlyn Chopra talksabout her personal life, her college days andthe eventful 2015 that she is anticipating in an
one on one exclusively with S.K. De. Here
are the excerpts:
2015 will be a feast for your fans as you have acouple of films lined up..This year, hopefully, I’d have two film releases. Onewould be a bilingual film which is being made in Tamiland Malayalam and the other would be a Bollywood film.I strongly believe that with therelease of these films, the per-ception around me which is afar cry from my reality wouldchange.
What are your upcomingfilms? In the bilingual film, I get to playthe role of a supermodel and thesto ry is slightly inspired byMonica Bellucci’s Malena. And Iget to have two love interests inthe film which makes me thecentre of attraction in the film, thankfully! I realized that theSouth Indians are very disci-plined and highly talented. Andthe fish down south is to diefor!!!
There are various Bollywoodfilm buffs who consider youto be the Zeenat Aman of thisgeneration.. What do youfeel about it?OMG!!! Really??? I never knewthat someday, I’d be comparedto the likes of Zeenat Aman ji! Itfeels damn good!!! But then, having said that, I feel that whenwe make comparisons, wetend to place limitations upon ourselves which could bedetrimental to one’s true potential. So, no comparisonsplease! I Am Who I Am J
Do you believe in true love?Yes! Yes! Yes! I do! I do believe that selfless and un-conditional love exists. And, I guess, most of my follow-ers on Twitter are my lovers as they motivate me, sup-port me, love me and pamper me all day, everyday andI’m very grateful for all that they give me via the virtual
medium. And I’m waiting for a special someone! J
Any secret that you would like to confess this year?Wait a minute! Secrets??? Can an open book possiblyhave any secrets!!! I doubt. So, no secrets in SherlynChopra’s life! Why? Because, she loves to be an openbook.
Do you have any regrets in your personal or pro-fessional life?Regrets? No! Well, I embrace myself with all mystrengths and weaknesses. I guess, I would not have
become the person that Iam today, who I’m veryproud of, had I not madethe mistakes that I madeor taken the decisions thatI took or been the personthat I was. I did start offwith an immense amountof mediocrity and so to-day, I value excellence.Having seen the mediocreside of the world and hav-ing worked with mediocretechnicians and f ilmmak-ers, I now understandwhat it takes to create ex-cellence. Excellence doesnot happen by accident. Ittakes a series of con-scious efforts and high in-tention to create excel-lence. And I’m grateful tolife for having taught methe hard way, the mean-ing of “excellence”.
There seems to be anaughty child w ithinyou..I have two adorable petsat home, Bobby, a Malteseand Doodoo, a Chihuahua.
Being with them gets me to put my guard down and tobe playful and childish. And every time, I step outta home,I carry the same energy and I guess, its now become apart of my personality.
Do you feel that you are misconstrued by variouspeople in the film fraternity?Yes! Those who love to judge me and hate me and criti-cize me for reasons best known to them, know onlyhalf of half of Sherlyn Chopra. It really is disappointingto know that they don’t really care to know the person

that I am or what all I had been through in life beforechoosing very harsh words to describe me as a per-son. And, today, I have reached a stage in my life whereI take nothing personally. And that helps me to take eachday as it comes, with zero expectations. And, I’m lovingthis new philosophy/policy that I’m living by.
Have you ever been approached by the BhattCamp?Well, honestly speaking, I was approached for a songin Murder 2. And I said, “Yeh dil maange more” J And I’mhoping that very soon, when they have something verymeaty for me, they would not hesitate to sign me asthey lead actor.
Your dream role?My dream role has got to be the role of the protagonistin Black Swan that was portrayed by Natalie Portman. Ilove her and her performance in the film! I could seeBlack Swan a zillion times and yet want to see it again! That’s the kind of the impact that the film has had onme!!!
Your most lib-erating expe-rience?Professionallyspeaking, theP l a y b o ypho tosho o t!And person-ally, whenA m i t a b hBachchan jigot me to rec-oncile with mymother! Thatwas highly lib-erating as i tgot me to let goof f my deeprooted resent-ment towardsmy motherand I shall forever be grateful to Amitji for having playedthe role of a catalyst in mending my utterly broken equa-tion with my mother.
Your schooling days?As a school going girl, I was highly disciplined, very stu-dious and always the darling of all my teachers and alsoof the church that I used to go to, twice a week andsometimes three to four times a week! So, you see, Iwas incredibly exceptional and awesome as I was toogood to be true! I guess, I was the school topper allthrough my school life! And I want to recreate history! Its time for me to do amazingly well in Bollywood andhopefully, Hollywood!
Could you tell us about your college days?My college life was very troublesome and traumatic!
That was the time when my family ceased to be normaland started becoming dysfunctional. The constant do-mestic fights at home would make me very angry, somuch so that, at times, I would want to disappear fromthe face of the earth! How I wish I knew how to disap-pear and reappear at my convenience! The college dayswere very painful! I was no longer interested in aca-demics and I chose to drop out of college. It was then, Iguess, I started becoming a rebel of sorts. And I’m gladthat all of that is history now as it is too much for a childto put up with domestic issues constantly, day in andday out, not just occasionally but all day and every day.I was lost. Every time, I think about my college days, Ifeel a huge loss of innocence and a loss of trust andfaith in love.
Don’t you think it made you stronger and paved theway for you to look beyond academics?Yeah, when you put it like that, yes, it makes sense!!!So, huge thanks to my late daddy and my mommy forwhatever it is that you both did which caused me to
drop out of col-lege and moveout of myhometown andinto the city ofBollywood.

It’s just that I prefer to be lean. I likecurves as we all do. But, I’m not particularly fond of thun-der thighs and extra large derrières! Are you????(Smiles)

Award-winningDanish directorSusanne Bierhas g iven amasterclass toNational Filmand Television
School students in which she spoke about her lat-est films, Serena starring Hollywood actors Jenni-fer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper and the indepen-dent film A Second Chance.Bier, who won an Oscar and Golden Globe for BestForeign Language Film for In A Better World as wellas European Film Award for Best Director, has beendescribed by critics as “…a bomb thrower,” “emo-tionally challenging and honest”.
Speaking in conversation with film critics and Visit-ing NFTS Tutor Mark Johnson, following a screen-ing of Serena, Bier spoke candidly about workingwith actors Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, who she said had been cast before their careershad skyrocketed.
“I’d seen Jennifer in Winter’s Bone and just thoughtshe was an incredible performer. I knew she wouldbe right for the lead role in Serena. This was beforeshe’d done The Hunger Games and the financierswere concerned that she would not be a big enoughname… This is barely four years ago.
“I had spoken with the producers about Bradley as Ialways thought and still think he is one of the mostfascinating actors of our time with an equal amountof sex appeal and depth and when Jennifer then sug-gested him on one of our first conversation it wasclear that we had to ask him.
Serena is a dark love story, based on a book byRon Rash, set in a logging community in the moun-tains of North Carolina, USA during the depression. Its powerful lead character, Serena, is central to thedownfall of the men around her.
“It’s a period noir story but we had to make it mod-ern; you can’t have a purely evil woman who leadsmen into disaster. That was part of the challenge. The psychology needs to be more complex. Jenni-fer (Lawrence) has an irresistible innocence abouther which makes it impossible not to fall in love withher - she is unbelievably talented”.The film was made on a relatively tight budget andthe almost unknown Jennifer Lawrence was able
to walk around the streets of Prague freely. Brad-ley got a bit bothered by quite a few female fansbut i believe he still enjoyed his time.
In the intervening years, their celebrity has risen andthis has affected the film’s accessibility, said Bier:“It was a crazy trajectory they went through. Withthis level public profile come expectations of thefilm.

“It was always meant to be a dark film, not a main-stream love story. When your actors have certain lev-els of presence, it changes that balance.”
Shooting on LocationIt was shot with a mainly Danish /Czech crew andmany English actors, outside Prague in the CzechRepublic where they built a set ‘camp’ designed tolook like America.
Bier said she deliberately avoided rehearsingscenes beforehand, preferring instead to rehearseon location for about an hour in the morning in prepa-ration for filming in the afternoon.
“I have readings with the actors beforehand but Idon’t rehearse with them. It changes everything if youdo it in a different location. We did it with liberty tothe script…sometimes without dialogue, maybeadding an extra scene.”
Digital vs FilmBier shoots on Digital preferring the freedom thisoffers, “…I shot an enormous amount…about 200hours,” often using a handheld camera.
“Digital is smoother, quicker than film. I don’t wantsomeone breathing down my neck telling me I’m us-ing too much film stock.”Comparing Serena to her independent low budgetfilm A Second Chance, Bier had “…more freedomin editing…less external pressures.”
Susanne talks about working withJennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper
on Serena
Working With ActorsAsked about her methods of working with actors,Bier said for her the key was not to look at the rusheson set and to avoid discussing the actors’ perfor-mances while shooting.
“If you let them look at the rushes, they step out ofthe moment and I want them to be in the moment, totap into their intuition. If you comment on set, theybecome nervous. You need to create a sense of se-curity and trust. It would be poisonous to the actors ifit was discussed on set.”
EditingInstead, she works with two editors afterwards whogo through the rushes and give their objective com-ments. Asked how she managed to work with somany rushes, she revealed a staggering mental skill:“I have trained my mind to remember every shot. It is
a useful when you need to find a shot!”
She also revealed that she uses testscreenings and audience questionnairesto gauge public opinion before a film isreleased.
Surviving long shootsStudent directors in the audience wantedto know how she managed her personalrelationships and handled stress whiledirecting a film. Bier said she went run-ning to keep mentally and physically fitand read books, “I rarely watch films,” andadded, “You need to maintain a senseof balance to avoid pressure from out-side. You are being asked to make mil-lions of decisions on set and everyone
believes their question is the most important. Butyou need to take a certain distance; only answerquestions when you are prepared for them. You arein control.”
Asked for her advice to student and up-coming di-rectors, Bier said: “Make your work personal andstriking. Work seriously on the script before filming, listen to other’s opinions – but don’t lose your ownthread. And work day and night – for nothing – be-cause these early films will be your calling card tomaking films in future.”
Serena is released in the UK on October 24 and isexpected to release in the USA on February 26,2015.

Neha Rajpal Productions is in thepreproduction phase of her firstMarathi film. As announced be-fore in the form of minimal digitalposter the one liner ofthe film is based on"Identical Twin sistersfalling in love with thesame boy and how thefun comedy and ro-mance grows in theback drop of a collegelife".
Story is written by DrAkash Rajpal andOmkar MangeshDatta. After the storywas locked it was abig challenge that whowould give justice tothis fun loving roman-tic comedy screen-play. Eventually it wasVijay Maurya andYogesh Joshi who were roped into write the screenplay and dia-logues. Since both writers arehighly acclaimed and award win-ning writers the producers weresure that it will be a winning script.Yogesh Joshi is a highly ac-claimed writer of f ilms l ikeMumbai Meri Jaan and TendulkarOut known for sensitive writingwhereas Maurya has receivednational award for writing fun filmChillar Party.
The challenge for the producerstook another step ahead to iden-tify appropriate director for thisunique script. After a long brainstorming Neha Rajpal Produc-tions decided to offer direction to
writer himself, Vijay Maurya as heis already a well known directorin Ad world. Vijay Maurya gladlyaccepted the offer making his
debut as a director for feature film.Vijay Maurya is known for his act-ing in critically acclaimed film likeAnurag Kashyaps Black Friday,Nishakant Kamats Mumbai MeriJaan and several commercials.Since Maurya has directed somany big brands commercials heis a very well known director inAdvertising world.
It's interesting to find out thatVijay’s first directed ad was amarathi one with actors like AdeshBandekar, Vibhavari Dixit andSonali Kulkarni. He has closelyworked with directors like AnuragKashyap and Imtiaz Ali.
When asked why he wanted to
start his journey of directing fea-ture film with a marathi film and nota Hindi film? He replied candidlysaying, “The script is a winner andmarathi cinema has a audiencewho have a taste of good cinemaand rich content. With so manymarathi movies doing so well atthe box office there is hardly dif-ference on the glamour quotientand success between marathi andHindi cinema. It's the story andsensible producers that has at-

On the basis of my own little personal experiencewith Bollywood and then as an AD in a MalyalamFeature Film (NO! I don’t understand Malyalam
but joined the crew as a trainee assistant director). Ini-tially, when I wanted to assist someone, people told meso many stories about AD’s that I got confused andwasn’t sure of their work. So I decided to throw somelight on the issue, after, I got to know something.
Just remember two things; first, we are talking of com-mon people here, who don’t have any connection in theIndustry or enough financial backing. If you are lucky tohave someone in industry or money as some of thestupid actors, directors etc., then, there is no need toread this article.
Second, whatever I have mentioned is generally truebut there are no rules in this game. People will try to tellyou some horrifying stories as nobody wants to increasecompetition but you have to make your own ways. Iwas lucky to have met great guys and ADs like ManishShahi, Kapil Sharma, Arunab and Rahil who helped ortrying to help me in every possible way. Also i made re-ally great friends like Bakul Thakkar, Anirudh Jatkar,Prakash Bare, Anirudh Nakhare, etc etc from the in-dustry, at FTII (Film and Television Insititute of India)and VIMS (Vikshi Institute of Media Studies, Pune), whohave been very supportive and encouraging.
See! What i am trying to say here is that its all upto youand there are no general rules or guidelines and youcan always break and make new rules. You just have tomake your own way.
I have mentioned the route for Assistant director but it’squite same for any other department. It will give you agood enough Idea.
Filmmaking in India:
One of the very surprising fact about Indian Film Indus-try (Sum of bollywood, tollywood, kollywood, Bhojpurietc ) is that we haven’t still allowed the Hollywood mov-ies to capture Indian Market. Indian films hold the shareof almost 90% percent whereas rest of the world istrying to save its film Industry from Hollywood. IndianIndustry produces about 1200 films every year, whichis mindboggling figure. France has made it mandatoryfor the theatre owners to showcase 50% of French filmsin their theatres. All thanks to our Indian directors whohave been making films our way. It’s also interesting toknow that Indian films are very popular in Arab coun-tries, SAARC, JAPAN, Brazil and so on. Unfortunately, there have not been many schools of filmmaking in In-dia except FTII, SRFTII etc.
Initially people used to assist some director and laterturned directors or any other technicians. So basically
you join one of this studio’s for e.g. Mehbob studio, RKstudio etc.,watch and learn. Those times, no scripts ordialogues were written. It used to start with an Idea andthen develop. Bollywood till late Nineties used to take 2years to make a film. That’s why, you must have no-ticed Salman Khan’s hair length changing many timesin the same film. It solely depends on your preservanceand conviction to move ahead. You assist someoneand then one day he might produce your film or recom-mend you to a producer.
Later Film and Television Institute of India, was estab-lished but then the seats were very limited. Also thefocus of this institute has been to develop Artistic cin-ema and not on filmmaking business. Most of FTIIian’shave struggled in their career for the same reason.
In India everybody wants to be either a cricketer likeSachin or a filmmaker like Spielberg. Considering theglamour and larger than life picture many people, with-out any knowledge of films, come to Mumbai every yearto get exploited by Studio’s and Production Houses.Behind all the glamour there is lot of hard work andpain. During production, everybody works for almost14-20 Hrs/day for days (we were worked for almost15-18 hrs a day to complete the whole film in 25 days).Being a film graduate gives you an opportunity to get arelatively easy entry but initially everybody almost worksfor free. It’s not a thumb rule though. Infact in this indus-try there are no rules. It totally depends on you. It’s oneof the unorganized sectors where everything is pos-sible and impossible at the same time. The good newsis that it’s changing.
The filmmaking as a process has evolved, so much, over the years. Now you just need an idea to make afilm. All thanks to the evolution of Digital filmmaking.Blair Witch project and paranormal activity are very goodexamples of that.
Last few years, we have seen few corporate enteringthe film industry and things have been slightly chang-ing. Directors like Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj,Dibankar Banerjee etc have been supported by UTVSpotboys.
One thing you should remember that filmmaking is abusiness more than an artistic pleasure. Most of theproducers are basically VC’s who want to double ortriple their money. Trusting a fresher or someone newis relatively tough but then, there are no rules, Again!
The competition is tough and only the fittest survive here. Most of the people here would not want to increase thecompetition for them, they not teach or guide you. Youhave to f ind your own ways and means. It’s a meanworld with no place for weak people.
The following article is on tips to
JOURNEY OF A DIRECTOR AMIT TIWARI
FILMY TOWN20 February 2015
My sales experience helped me personally. One has tobe very aggressive in his approach. In about a month’stime I had nos. of the directors and famous Ad’s ( &thanks to Manish Shahi and few of my Film Apprecia-tion course Friends). I met many known people and fi-nally could crack one of the RGV’s production films(people had told me that it takes 6 months of struggleto get a film initially, especially when you don’t have anyconnections) but when finally they called me, I hadreached kerala for the Malyalam feature film. OK!
That’s the important rule, you should take whatevercomes first because tomorrow is very uncertain here. There are three ways to Entera) You join some production house or assists some-one for years before you learn the craft and make ownfilm.b) You graduate from film school or take some formaltraining and then join industryc) You learn from a film school or your own ways andthen go independent. There are two verticals inBollywood.
A) The Players, who follow Traditional school of film-making which is basically the absence of concrete plan-ning, specialized departments etc. Though it has slightlyimproved over the years. These days most of the peoplehave bound scripts but still there is slight ambiguity andconfusions in the whole process.B) The Player who follow Hollywood school of Filmmak-ing. More organized and crystal clear operations. Youmust have heard that in India it takes 2 years to make afilm and 2 months to write a script. In Hollywood it’s justthe opposite. The scriptwriters are paid almost equiva-lent to the director. Here, the scripts are just stolen, takenor adapted without paying anything.
The facts and Myth about Assistant Directors:
Assistant directors are basically administrators whoensure that the shooting completes in the pre decidedtime. They schedule the whole film, decide the numberof days required to make a film, make call sheets andensure continuity so that the directors are free from thisentire admin job and can concentrate more on the cre-

ative aspect. You learn over the process but then if youthink that’s it’s a creative process then you are wrong. If you join someone who follows Hollywood style thenfollowing positions as an AD are identified. 1st A.D -The person in charge of scheduling a film. He/She de-cides how many shoot days are required to finish afilm and must finish it in that much time. He/She isalso responsible for running/managing a set. This postis highly specialized and the person MUST understandscheduling and SHOULD HAVE managed a proper filmset before. Generally, it takes about 3-5 years of GOODEXPERIENCE as a 3rd and then as a 2nd before youcan be one.
2nd A.D - He is 1st A.D.s right hand man. Does day today correspondence with the production departmentand is the main link between Direction and Production.Responsibilities include - Making Call Sheets, DailyProgress Reports, Background Action as per the di-rector and the first A.D. THIS MAY SOUND EASY BUTAGAIN this too needs previous experience of at least 2films or a lot of commercials (sometimes). 2nd 2ndA.D - Person in charge of Hair/Make-up/Wardrobe. Ittakes endless co-ordination between the three depart-ments and the actors. The person must have the con-fidence to deal with actors and stars. MUST NOT BESTARSTRUCK. One GOOD film experience minimumor a lot of good commercials. 3rd A.D - The personwho helps the second A.D set the Background Actionand follows other instructions by the same. Also dis-tributes sides (scenes, dialogues) to the crew and theday to day Xerox and printing work. Mostly this is wherenew comers start but if it is a big movie then they pre-fer to go with someone experienced. SET P.A - Theseare also known as 'Runners' in Hollywood. As the namesuggests they are supposed to do everything their se-niors tell them to do. Counting Background Actors, Dis-tributing Paperwork, Locking up the locations (i.e. con-trolling traffic) etc. etc.
OTHER POSITIONS-Clapper - person in charge of the slate. Continuity Su-pervisor - A very important position. The person keepsa check on various continuity issues. Wardrobe, Ac-tion, Props etc. Very Demanding job. Minimum 2-3 filmexperience This system is more organized whereineverybody is assigned a particular responsibility. Lat-est software’s and technologies are used for schedul-ing and production. B) If you assist someone who fol-lows the traditional style: There could be many assis-tants all reporting to chief Assistant Director. Chief AD’srole is same as 1st AD. There are other AD’s who dothe same job as 2nd AD, 2nd 2nd AD etc but positionsare not defined and recognized. This system believesstrongly that since they are doing the charity by teach-ing you filmmaking, you should be grateful to them foran opportunity and work for free. In broader terms the
work is same but Hollywood system recognizes theimportance of AD’s and pays them well. In my per-sonal opinion, No Director can work without AD’s andthus it’s the right of the AD to get paid satisfactorily. For a beginner the payment system remains almostsame but let me tell you that there are no rules. It de-pends, whom you are working for and your own atti-tude.
FROM AD TO Director:Being AD helps coz you know people and system andvice versa. You develop contacts with producers andonce you have a script and recommendation of yourdirector, somebody will produce your film. At times di-rector himself produce their AD’s Films. You also haveoption of UTV and other corporates. Anurag Kashyapassisted RGV and many other directors for years be-fore he made his own film. Generally it takes a goodexperience of 4-5 years to be a first/chief AD. Takingtime out from your hectic schedules and writing scriptis very difficult. You have to constantly think of yoursurvival in city like Mumbai which is very expensive.Once you become a chief AD/1st AD, it all depends onyour desire to become Director. You should be able towrite/find a good story. Few AD’s remain AD’s through-out their lives. If you want to go independent that isalso fine. You just need to get some recognition foryour works before approaching any producer as youwill not have the recommendation of director. Thereare many recognized national and international f ilmfestivals with very good prize money.

Satyajit Ray made his legendary first film “PatherPanchali” in five years while working as a commercialArtist at an advertising company for surviving and pro-ducing the film. I am sure after this brief session; youwould have decided to follow your path. Just remem-ber that there are no specific rules. If you have to do ityou got to do it. You will have to decide your personalinterest. These days you can make film with your handycam and laptop. Digital filmmaking is a boon to theyoung filmmakers. All that you need is a good Idea.Trust me if you have a good idea then most of theactors or technicians would be more than willing towork for free. As far as I am concerned, I have de-cided to go Independent. It will take time, may be fewyears before you will see my first feature but patienceis the key and there are no short cuts. SO CHOOSEYOUR OWN WAY AND REMEMBER THERE ARE NORULES.
