Vehicle users are being warned not to leavevaluables on display in their vehicles in abid to deter thieves.

The Horsham District remains a relatively lowcrime area, which can only be improved byresponsible and informed owners taking action toavoid the potential loss of property.

Vehicle crime in the Horsham District hasfallen by 13.4% compared to the last year, butvehicle users are still at risk, especially from theopportunist thief. Most vehicle crime can beprevented by taking a number of simple securityprecautions. Tips from Sussex Police include:

l Do not leave handbags or wallets in the car.Even if handbags do not contain anythingvaluable, a thief will not know that and mightstill break a window to get at it.

l Make sure the doors of the vehicle arelocked and the windows and sunroof areclosed even if the vehicle will only be left fora couple of minutes.

l Make sure the car is parked in a locationwhere it is in clear view of other people, notobscured from sight by trees or shrubs,therefore making it more vulnerable. At night,park in a well lit area.

l The most commonly stolen items from carsinclude satellite navigation systems,handbags and mobile phones. They are easyto remove quickly, are easily concealed anddo not look out of place if a thief is seenwalking away from a car.

l Make sure coats and jackets are not leftbehind in the car. A thief may think that it ishiding a laptop or handbag and break intothe car to find out.

l Should anything untoward happen,descriptions and car registrations should benoted and given to the police at the time ofsuspicious incidents.

Chief Inspector Howard Hodges, HorshamDistrict Commander at Sussex Police, said, “Thesolution to avoid becoming the next victim iseasy: Don’t leave any valuables in your car.Thinking you can hide them under your seat or inthe boot or footwell is not an option as thievesknow where to look. By taking a few simpleprecautions, youcan ensure thatyou don’t becomethe next theftvictim.”

ButtermilkSconesMETHOD 1. Heat oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Sift theflour and salt together. Rub in the butter until themixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar andraisins or sultanas if using.2. Gently warm the buttermilk and vanilla in amicrowave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed bysome of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quicklymix together to form a dough – don’t over-mix it.3. Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bringtogether with your hands a couple of times. Pressout gently to about 4cm thick and stamp outrounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place sconesevenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two. 4. Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot,and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bakefor 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.To Make The Fruit Compote:1. Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need inthe saucepan, on a gentle heat on the hob.2. Simmer the fruit in the saucepan on the hobuntil the fruit starts to soften; stir gently now andagain just enough so that the fruit does not stick tothe pan; do not allow it to burn.3. Now add sugar to taste – not too much at first.Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you donot make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take carenot to burn yourself when testing it.4. Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns toa pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and youshould remove it from the heat to cool. It keeps for2-3 days in the fridge.

Local lady Margaret Matschy is living anextraordinary life. She has been diagnosedwith cancer twice and survived. Margaret

believes this is due to no stroke of luck, shebelieves in one thing – research. Without which,she feels she would not be here.

In March 1998 Margaret found a lump in herbreast; a trip to a specialist and a mammogramconfirmed her worst fears. A biopsy andlumpectomy operation followed along with theremoval of 31 lymph nodes. Doctors confirmedthat it was likely the cancer had spread and acourse of chemotherapy and radiotherapy wasstarted.

“I lost a lot of hair atfirst” said Margaret.“Thankfully, though, Iwas in the clear. Myliver and bones wereOK, but the treatmentwas very intrusive andlasted weeks.Afterwards I was leftwith a lot of very badscarring and nonatural shape. Iremember all of myfamily being shocked,it was just before mybirthday and they allthought it would be mylast. But I thought, “No, I’m not ready to go yet.”

Margaret survived and went on to celebratehappy family events including her daughter’swedding and the birth of her grandchildren –which was extremely fortunate, as they hadalready lost both their natural grandfathers due tocancer. Her life ticked along happily for the next14 years until 2011 when Margaret found a lumpin her other breast. Ironically, at age 69, it was herlast appointment before her routine mammogramwhen the lump was found and Margaret steeledherself once more.

“I was expecting much of the same severity, soI was surprised when far fewer nodes wereremoved. The time between treatments wasdramatically shorter and the advancement in theskill of the surgeons was amazing. I was left witha nice natural shape. Luckily this time I only hadto undergo radiotherapy and not chemotherapy. Iremember thinking at the time that theimprovements in the medical treatments Ireceived were really noticeable, and I truly

believe that research has saved my life.”That was two years ago. Today Margaret is

looking forward to joining other cancer survivorsat Horsham’s Relay For Life where she will walkthe first lap as a guest of honour. She feelsprivileged to be part of the event and explains,“So many people thought of me and motivatedme to keep going. Being a survivor at the Relay isa brilliant way of showing people you can survive,there is hope. So please come along and let’ssupport one another.”

Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is acommunity-led, non-athletic event where teams

fund-raise and thenjoin together in theRelay event. There,teams take it in turnsto walk round a trackfor up to 24 hours tosignify that ‘cancernever sleeps’.Cancer survivors ofall ages launch theRelay For Life asVIPs by walking thefirst lap. They’recheered on by family,friends and Relayparticipants from thecommunity who havecome together to

celebrate their achievements.If you’ve ever been diagnosed with cancer

we’d love you to inspire others and be a guest ofhonour at Relay For Life. The event takes placeover 24 hours at Christ’s Hospital School,Horsham over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June.

In addition to the walk, there will be stalls,competitions, sports activities and plenty ofentertainment to keep visitors and participantsamused. Indeed, local businesses are nowencouraged to take advantage of an array ofcorporate sponsorship opportunities.

Billingshurst fire-fighters were out in force inMarch, raising money for the Fire-FightersCharity – the UK’s leading provider of

services that enhance quality of life for servingand retired fire-fighters, fire personnel and theirfamilies. Their vision is to make a positivedifference by supporting people in the fire andrescue community when they are in need. Overthe years they have helped hundreds ofthousands of individuals by providing world-classtreatment and support services.

It costs £9million a year to keep the charityrunning and with nogovernment funding thecharity are completelyreliant on the generosityand enthusiasm of oursupporters.

The role of a fire-fighter is one of bravery,loyalty and devotion topublic service. Just likefire-fighters, the charity ispassionate about theirwork and the servicesthey provide to the men

and women who risk their lives to help others.In sub-zero temperatures the brushes and

sponges were out to make sure the locals hadsparkling clean cars!

The charity car wash is held twice a year, so ifyou missed out this time watch this space for thedate in September. We are also planning anopen day on the 14th September, 12:00-16:00,which is a great chance for parents and childrento come and watch some of the situations thatwe are faced with including ladder drills, roadtraffic collision demonstration, chip pan fire

women with their own colours; the dance crazeMorris can be seen as a medieval equivalent oftoday’s Hip Hop. Yetbecause it is over 600years old rather than40 it is seen as quaint,rustic and funny in apeculiarly English way.But today’s imagebelies a rich culturethat is celebrated witha Day of Dance in theancient medieval townof Horsham on 11thMay. On that day thetown is full of Morrisand other traditionaldancers showcasingtheir moves. It is a riotof colour, movement,fancy footwork andnoise that occurs lessthan 30 miles from thegritty streets ofLondon.

The Broadwood Day of Dance builds on afantastic folk tradition that, 100 years ago, sawHorsham as a hub of folk music and dance. Tomany, Broadwood is synonymous with pianomakers, but in the world of music, Lucy (adaughter of the celebrated family) made hername collecting folk music and, through her,Ralph Vaughan Williams visited Horsham,capturing many tunes. Paying their respects tothis lady the Broadwood Morris Men and womentook her name and thus began many years ofpromoting and celebrating a traditional Englishart form. Now, once a year, they take over the

town of 40,000 souls, transforming everymedieval street corner or open space into apublic arena to show their passion.

This year one of the Broadwood Morris menstalwarts, Old Harry, will not be present as he

passed away, butHorsham DistrictCouncil’s HorshamMuseum & Art Gallerywill be displaying oneof his Morris costumesthrough the generosityof his daughter. Therecent donation is afitting acquisition asthe museum alsoholds the archive ofthe celebrated folksinger Henry Burstow,a cobbler whoseautobiography is aclassic of workingclass literature.

The backdrop for allthis dance mayhem isthe timber-framedstone-roved medievalmarket town of

Horsham. A town whose 800-year-old markettradition has seen a renaissance in recent yearsand in keeping with the day’s celebration stallholders will be decked out in suitable attire.

The Broadwood Morris Day of Dance is a freefestival of traditional dance with groups comingacross the region. It takes place on Saturday11th May throughout the town.

Life-saving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex AirAmbulance is appealing for cyclists to join itsnew-look Double 100 bike ride this summer.

The 100-mile or 100km ride on 23rd June willthis year start and finishat the Surrey and Sussexhelicopter base at RedhillAerodrome.

Both new routes takein all counties covered bythe two helicopters andthe 100-mile route(shown below) will passthrough Marden in Kent –the home of Kent AirAmbulance.

May Day is celebrated on the first Mondayof the month. It originates from villagecelebrations marking the coming of

summer.The following

traditions often takeplace among a dayof festivities:

Maypoles arehung with greeneryand ribbons andpainted brightly.Local children dressin their finest clothes,with bells and flowergarlands, andperform traditionalribbon dances suchas Gypsy Tent andThe Spiders Web.

Originally maypoles were made by villagersusing a young tall tree. They stripped off thelower branches, but left leaves at the top tosymbolise new life, and then decorated it withflowers and ribbons.

The Crowning of the May Queen is linked to

the honouring of Flora the Roman goddess offruit and flowers. Traditionally she took no part ingames or dancing, but sat like a queen in a

flower-decked chairto watch her‘subjects’.

Morris dancing isa traditional form ofEnglish folk dancingcarried out bygroups known assides. Dances arepassed downthroughgenerations, andinvolve movementsto accentuate thetinkling of bellsattached to

costumes and coming together to strike woodensticks. Loud accordion music accompanies thedancing. Sometimes dancers paint their facesblack, and this association with the North AfricanMoors may explain the origins of the name‘Morris’ dancing. Susan Brookes-Morris

The Glass Room – AnnCleevesYou may have come acrossAnn Cleeves’ creation, VeraStanhope, in the televisionadaptations of this popularseries of novels. If youhaven’t, don’t worry, youwon’t be disappointed. Forthose coming to the booksfrom the television series, the

adaptations are faithful enough for the charactersto be recognisable. However, the real attraction isin the genuine twists and turns that Cleevesprovides, and in her ability to provide realistic,believable and sympathetic protagonists andvillains.

The Glass House is set, as are all of theseries, in Northumberland. As it begins, VeraStanhope’s neighbour has disappeared. Thereis no real mystery to that, she is easily trackeddown to a local writers’ retreat. However, asVera arrives to find out what has motivated hersudden departure, she finds herself at thescene of a murder. The victim, a writer andcritic, does not seem to be mourned by many.Then more deaths follow, and it becomes clearthat the killer is playing with the police, leavingfalse trails and seemingly enjoying the thrill ofthe chase.

One of the strengths of Cleeves’ writing is thatwhile she often takes us into Vera Stanhope’sconsciousness, she also uses the perspective ofthe long suffering Sergeant Joe Ashworth, and inthis case also develops the characters’ potentialvictims and suspects so that we see events fromdiffering points of view. Just enough is revealedto keep us moving forward, but never enough tomake the conclusion obvious. Here, with the twinthemes of writing and detection, Cleeves is in herelement, and the plot moves swiftly onwards witha clever turn at the end of each chapter.

There is no need to read the previous novelsin the series in order to read The Glass Room.However, once you’ve read it I would besurprised if you did not feel the need to seek outthe earlier volumes, all of which are equallyimpressive.

Dracula – A Counting Primer – JenniferAdams and Alison OliverFrom the moment you pick up this board book,you know it is different. The Gothic colourscheme is a clue – there are no pastels here,only purple, black and grey. The vampire on thecover is admittedly rather cute, but he is stillrecognisably Count Dracula. And as you workthough the text… well, you can call them ‘boxes’if you like, but they are coffins!

So why am Irecommending this book?Because quite simply, theconcept and execution aresuperb. The BabyLit series,which features Draculaalongside Pride andPrejudice, Jane Eyre andRomeo and Juliet,introduces classic literaturein the form of a counting

book. All are beautifully designed, withappropriately thematic illustrations, and basedcarefully on the text. So, Dracula (my favourite,although Little Miss Austen comes a closesecond) features one castle, four ships, fiveheroes and the aforementioned nine ‘boxes’. Theattention to detail is meticulous. The Demeter ofcourse is one of those four ships, and the pagefeaturing seven letters and diaries is almost aminiature telling of the whole tale.

My own children are past the board book stagebut that doesn’t matter, because I wouldn’t givethem this book anyway, and not because it is too scary, oh no, it is too good. It is mine.

Billingshurst Primary School held aspecial dress-up day on 7th March tocelebrate this year’s World Book Day,highlighting the joys of reading topupils. The

children looked fantasticand the range ofcharacters was trulyamazing, including HarryPotters, lots of Where’sWallies, Cats in the Hat,princesses and a TigerWho Came To Tea. Thestaff joined in the fun withthe all the Year 6teachers dressing up asWhere’s Wally, there wasa big bad wolf in Year 1and even a Harry PotterDementor chasing after the Hermiones andHarrys in Year 2.

The school is one of thousands across the UKand Ireland marking the occasion by showinghow magical books can be. The story time at theend of the day worked really well and you couldhave heard a pin drop as the children were soabsorbed in listening to favourite tales.

Some of the members of the Year 6 book clubcontinued the celebrations of the day byattending the Weald Book Award later on in theevening. They performed a short sketch on

stage, which showedjust how much they hadenjoyed the books theyhad been reading. Theywrote a funny script, hadgreat costumes andperformed with realpanache!

Head Teacher HelenWilliamson said, “Goodreading starts early andchildren who sharebooks with other aremore likely to developlanguage skills and

advanced reading levels. Our event is a fun wayto get the children’s imaginations fired up andencourage them to become avid readers.”

The ‘outside’Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

Lily was still moaning about the noisyneighbours and how much she wishedthey could all go outside, and Uno, her

little ram lamb, was wondering what ‘outside’was. He soon found out because Sally and Billopened the gates and the whole flock, exceptthose still in the nursery pens stampeded outand into the paddock. All the grown-up sheepput their heads down and began to munch thegreen stuff which was on the ground. Uno triedsome. It didn’t come too easily but it tasteddifferent and delicious. Uno was soonmunching too.

Then the older sheep started to move aroundand as Uno looked up he couldn’t believe hiseyes. There was so much room to move andplay! He chased Kinsey and the other lambsand soon they were having a lovely game of‘chasey’. But as it grew dark, their mums calledthem, they had a quick snack, snuggled bytheir mums and settled down to sleep.

They spent a couple of days doing thisalthough it was colder at night than Uno wasused to. One of the uncomfortable things aboutthe bigger space was when Uno wanted a drinkfrom his mum, she would move to the nextpatch of grass and poor Uno lost his balanceand fell over. But he soon picked himself up

and after a little while he stopped falling over.So that was okay with him.

Then one night it grew very cold and thewind blew through the paddock. Uno didn’t likethat very much, but his mum was warm and itseemed alright. They slept like that until dawnand then something strange happened. The airgrew even colder and the wind even stronger.Out of the air fell huge big white flakes of snow.It fell on the ground and the trees and thefences and on the sheep. Soon everythingincluding the sheep had a coating of snow. Thewind blew fiercely and it was wet and cold. Unoshivered and shivered; he did not like this onelittle bit. He longed to go back to the nursery.

Not long after Sally got up, she and Billdecided to bring the sheep in out of theweather, so with a bucket of food and the gatesopened, Sally cried, “Grr-up”, and the sheepthundered back into the goats’ corral to shelterand have nice hay to lie on. Uno was sopleased. Although ‘outside’ could be nice, withgrass and room to play, he didn’t much like it atall with its coating of white. It was too cold, wetand horrible. It would be nearly another monthbefore they all would be allowed ‘outside’again, and Uno liked that just fine. He preferred ‘inside’ any day. Yvonne Fleece

Worm counts – helping to reduce resistance

There has been a recent move by the BVA(British Veterinary Association) to call upon theveterinary medicines regulator to reclassify all

anthelmintics (wormers) as a POM-V medication.This will mean that horse wormers will no longer beavailable from feed merchants, saddlers or even theinternet, but owners would have to have themprescribed by a veterinary surgeon.

The reason for this move iscited as the growing concernof resistance to wormers. Formany years outdated wormingpractises of blanket wormingentire yards at six-weeklyintervals has enabled someworms to survive thechemicals and reproduce aworm population which canresist the action of the wormermaking it inefficient andallowing those wormpopulations to flourishunchecked. Currently there areno new wormers in development so we must try tokeep what we have effective.

So, what can we as owners do to help slow downthe onset of resistance? Some of you may haveheard of worm counts, whereby a faecal sample istaken and sent to a lab to be tested. This involvesthe sample being put into a centrifuge, then placedonto a slide and observed under a microscope. Acount of worm eggs is undertaken, the results areinterpreted as EPG or eggs per gram. Over a periodof time an owner can build up a picture of the horse’shealth status and worm burden and treat accordingly.

The idea behind the worm count is to cut down ongiving horses unnecessary chemical wormers andthus reducing the onset of resistance. Worm countsand strategic treatment can be more cost effectivethan routinely worming a horse every 6-13 weeks!

It is very important to remember that worm countsdo not show up all types of worms. As we arecounting the eggs being output with the faeces wemust remember that we can get a false negativecount whereby the animal could be carrying verylarge numbers of non-egg laying juvenile worms,hence a negative count. Encysted small red wormshidden away in the gut wall are a very good exampleof this and therefore must be treated with a suitablewormer during the winter months. Tapeworm isanother parasite that can escape a worm countalthough your vet can perform an ELISA blood test todetermine if this parasite is a problem in your horse.

Worm counts are becoming more popular withowners as they begin to understand their benefits.

Regular counts enable owners to target those horsesthat are carrying the worm population – it is said that80% of worms are carried by 20% of horses.

Taking a count could not be easier! To get themost accurate evaluation of the sample it is best totake a small piece of dung from several piles and mixtogether before putting some in the sample pot. Postyou sample to your chosen company as soon as

possible, don’t leave it festeringin the car or tackroom for days!

Worm counts can also beused to determine if a wormerhas worked or not. Todetermine if there is resistanceto a wormer you can take aworm count before wormingand then again 10-14 daysafter worming. If the count comesback as low or no eggs seenthen the wormer is working.

New horses arriving shouldhave a worm count which willdetermine any treatment that

may be needed before the new horse is allowed tograze with the rest of the herd. I would do this even ifthe owner tells me the horse has been wormed as Iwould want to determine if the animal is carrying aresistant worm strain.Interpreting the results. When you receive yourresults it will have your horse’s name followed by thenumber of eggs found, for instance “< 50epg no eggsseen” means at that time the horse is deemed clearof parasites. It is very important to repeat the test atthe next interval where you would normally give aroutine worming dose to determine if this is still thecase. If the count is between 200 and 1,200 EPG thisis a medium count and the horse will need worming,consult your vet or SQP for advice on the bestproduct to use. For high counts over 1,200 EPG thehorse will need worming and the wormingprogramme will need a serious overhaul.

As well as worm counts regular poo picking ofpaddocks, cross-grazing with other species such as sheep or cattle and not over overgrazing pasture can all help in the fight against wormer resistance.Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

The short, very moving valediction for BaileyAdam in the March edition of Village Tweet,reminded me of the simple pleasures

associated with walking with a dog. I’m not talkingabout the daily promenade in themorning and evening associated withtoilet stops, poo bags and haunted byother leashed canines and rogue cats.A walk disturbed by protruding bushes,fences, grass verges and the dreadedlampposts and ruined by pedestrians!

The type of dog walk that Laika andI enjoy is of the free-range varietywhere the space is wide, the solitudepalpable and the backdrop interesting.Thankfully West Sussex is tattooedwith perfect dog walking country withfootpaths and bridleways crisscrossingwoods and fields and with a shorelineguaranteed to make every self-respecting doglover sit up and beg!

There is nothing more soothing than watchingyour dog take flight to investigate new scents,pursue errant rabbits and generally luxuriate inbeing without the confines of a lead. There isnothing more energising than being out, man anddog, on a fine clear day in early spring with theblackthorn coming into bud, the robins, thrushesand blackbirds starting to compete with their song

and early bluebells pushing their way through theautumn carpet of oak leaves. Already, early rooksare winging their way to high trees laden with sticksand the plaintive mewing of a pair of buzzards high

over Rosier Wood heralds thebreeding season.

Perfect. Except for the mud! I’mtalking about the thick, brown, oozyguck that only Weald clay can providewhen wet. Mud deep enough to lose awellie in. Mud noxious enough tocause trench foot and mud fever (aska horse!). Our daily odysseys into thecountryside have become reminiscentof troop movements during theSomme offensive with areas thatLaika and I have officially declared as‘No Man’s Land’. Laika of course,seems pretty oblivious to my muttered

expletives as I ‘surf’ down drenched inclines andgrasp at naked saplings for support. She’s in herworld where freedom reigns, unfettered and herown mistress for a time!

Freedom comes with a price of course and inLaika’s case it’s a thorough dousing under thegarden hose followed by an assault with the hairdryer. How I long for a dry spring like the one in2011 – don’t tell the farmers!Ron Myal

gardeners must be happy thatspring is now well under way.May brings with it a wonderfulselection of flowers, mainly incool blues, purples, pinks andwhites, and some greatfragrances too, including theheady scent of Lilac. It’s an oldfashioned shrub which has fallenout of favour, and for the majority of the year itlooks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bushsmells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze.Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mowngrass and you have the most perfect springfragrance, better than any air-freshener.

After a long winter with more snow than I canever remember, and yet more depressing newsabout our economy, I think what we all need is toenjoy a little nostalgia; I’m not talking buntinghere, but bedding plants. Towards the end of themonth is the time when bedding plants and othertender perennials can be planted outside.Thousands of people will flock to garden centresup and down the country over the coming weeks,and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the yearto the outdoor retail world. It’s an opportunity forthe nurseryman (or woman) to display row afterrow of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray bytray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop.Each standing to attention, faces held high, theirlabel pointing forwards and each doing theirutmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. The flowersshine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiledfruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi-coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of

blackberryand raspberryjellies?

Choosing yourcolour scheme for thisyear’s bedding display (bethat just the one hangingbasket or a front garden thatlooks like a Victorian public park)is exciting, and a totally personaltask. I’ve know it can causearguments between couples, but

have also known marriages which have survivedsuccessfully on the basis that “you plant yourside and I’ll plant mine”. There are those who likea multi-coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed trayof Petunias for example), those who prefer tostick to a muted pallet of two or three‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue andwhite) and then those trying to achieve a Swisscottage look who might plump for just the one(perhaps a red trailing Ivy Leafed Pelargonium).But whatever your preference I don’t think itreally matters, because buying annual beddingplants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’sgood for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant forpassers-by to enjoy, and most importantly greatat making you feel happy at home.Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net

Lambing for us is now over and we have hadmore single lambs born this year than twinswhich we quite like. We have

always allowed our sheep to lamboutside and then brought them in for24 hours, dagged the nether region,manicured feet, applied blowflyprevention and put them back outwithout a problem. This year we hadto change our method half-waythrough and get all the ewes in as MrFox managed to get two lambs whilewe were bringing another ewe andlamb in – we were only gone 15minutes. I’m not sure if we haveoverconfident foxes or they’re just sohungry they are taking more chances? Happily allthe sheep and lambs are back out now andalthough there is absolutely no grass (come onsunshine, we need you!) the lambs are playingand loving the space to run and poing. DadJimmy is walking with his chest puffed right outlooking extremely pleased with himself.

The paddocks are at last drying out and weare slowly getting more of the younger pigs back

outside, where they should be. The MiddleWhites have been weaned and they’re very

different to the Saddlebacks, whodon’t give a hoot, and really missedtheir mum for 24 hours.

It’s now pig show entry time andlet’s just say ‘robust discussions’are taking place as to how many wewill be attending this year, annualleave and cash being the limitingfactors. Hubby is convinced ouryoung boar Travolta will win Pig ofthe Year at Yorkshire!

I almost don’t want to tempt fatebut it appears the Brahma henshave started laying reliably and so

the incubators have been switched on toacclimatise.

We also exhibited some shearling ewes andsome pigs at the Scats farming event with theWSSC; we felt famous with people coming up tous saying they always read this blog and reallyenjoy it – I will be signing autographs soon at this rate!Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farmmanager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling aboutlife on the farm from the now to days gone by.

They say that we all are due two minutesof fame during our lifetime. I think that Imay have had mine usurped by a dog.

It all happened several years ago when theBBC contacted us as to whether we would beprepared to take part in the CountryfileFarming Diary. This involved them giving us acamera for a month or so and letting us filmthe whole of the appleharvest that was aboutto take place. Theywould check ourproduction half-waythrough the month andoffer any advice theysaw fit and we wouldthen proceed to thefinal day’s pick.Naturally with myinbuilt shyness andreticence… I leapt atthe chance.

Came the day andwe were shown how tooperate the beautifullittle camera and thenleft to our owndevices. Of course Igot carried away. Ifilmed anything andeverything that movedor, for that matter,didn’t. Quite a littleHitchcock I was, muchto the amusement of the pickers who, Inoticed, had suddenly adorned make-up andsling back shoes and pink Marigolds to climbladders in! But it was a huge giggle and muchenjoyed by all of us.

Then came the moment for the professionalboys to view, edit and comment on myattempts so far…

Thankfully it was not too bad. They said thatthis or that needed more viewing and try not tobe such a plonker with the unscriptedcommentary (Not their exact words of course,but you get the gist). Also would I get morefootage of the dog?

The dog? I wasn’t aware that I had included‘the dog’ in my efforts. Still, orders must beobeyed and I duly included a few passing

glances of Jacko in some of the next fewpictures I took as I wandered through theorchards filming the girls as they gathered thecrop and its subsequent transporting from thefields to the stores.

Then it was all over. The camera wasreluctantly returned to its rightful owners andthe hours of filming delivered to the editingdepartment of the BBC for any slight trimmingthat might be needed of my skilful artistry.

Comes the day. Huddled in front of the box,eager to see the results of all that work.

Glowing with self-inflicted pride at theprospect of seeingmyself and the girlsin gloriousTechnicolor.

There followedabout four minutes offilming that I admitwas entertaining,and quite informativeto anyone who wasunfamiliar with applepicking, but by farthe star of the showwas that blasted dog.

The BBCobviously thoughthim a far betterattraction than yourstruly. He was ineverything. Frombeginning to end, inevery shot, there hewas. Grinning hisstupid Jack Russell

grin at all and sundry. Sitting by pickers’ladders, riding on the bonnet of the tractor,snacking on pieces of apple at breaktimes, andeven when there were some late shots of theinside of the farm shop, there he was, reflectedin the display cabinets mirrors as he wanderedaround the customers’ feet.

I must admit we too were smitten by him,and privately rather proud of the love that thecamera and the editors had obviously felt forhim.

But, still, how would you feel? Two minutesof fame they say, two minutes, that’s all. Darn,blasted, interfering animal; but we loved everytangled tuft of hair on his body.John Nash

THE MILLENNIUM BRIDGE CLUBJust for Fun!

The Millennium Bridge Club is a small and ‘friendly’Bridge Club. It has been established for many yearsbut after losing some of its older members, is now inneed of a membership boost.

If you are a learner/improver who wants to gain confidence or a longstanding social player who has noregular partner, then Millennium might just be perfectclub for you.

The Club meets every Wednesday in StorringtonVillage Hall (on West Street near to the Tesco garage)and plays from 1.30-4.30pm (winter: 1-4pm). We drawpartners every 4 or 8 hands and there’s a cup of teaand a biscuit halfway through the session.

The range of ability varies from near beginner tolifelong player but none so good as to claim ‘superior-ity’ or to have great expectations of our partners – wejust learn from each other each week, have a chatabout conventions (if anything unusual crops up) andkeep our fingers crossed that we are dealt good cards– after all, at 1p a 100 points it’s very important to win!

Whatever your bridge standard, you won’t find amore amiable way to spend your Wednesday after-noon than with the Millennium Bridge Club (currentlyall ladies but men would be absolutely welcome).

Laptop computers can offer the power of a desktopwith the flexibility and freedom to use them whereyou wish. There is an astonishing range of products

available, ranging in price from a few hundred pounds upto two thousand. As with all technology purchases it’sessential to do your research first – work out what youneed, what you’re willing to pay for, and what you can dowithout.

The cheapest option is a netbook. They are smallerand lighter than laptops, but don’t have the same rangeof features. They are perfect if you want to browse theinternet and send emails while you’re out and about. Thekeyboard and larger screen can make them easier touse than a smartphone or tablet computer,such as an iPad.

The next step up is a cheap laptop.These are suitable for everyday tasks suchas word processing and web browsing, andare good for computer novices. They areportable, but may be bulky.

You may have to pay more if you need tostore more data on the computer (such asmovies) or use it for more demanding tasks(such as gaming or editing video). Sleekand light designs also come at a premium.

Use this quick guide to help youunderstand laptop lingo and work out whichone is right for you:

Operating system – Windows is the best-selling operating system (OS) and isinstalled on most laptops. Macbooks

(Apple’s laptop) are more expensive (though beautifullyengineered) and use Apple’s OS which is very easy touse. (Village Tweet’s Editor loves Macs!)

l Memory – this has a big influence on how fast thelaptop will run. Aim for at least 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM.

l Storage – the hard drive is where programs, files,data and documents are stored. Look for 320 or 500 GBif you want to store lots of videos, music or photographs.

l Processor – a dual core basic processor shouldcome as standard. Processors are normally made byIntel or AMD. AMD is cheaper; Intel processors get morepowerful as the model number increases.

l Battery life – most laptop batteries will last for five orsix hours. More expensive models maygo for longer, but invest in a spare if youare often out for the day.

l Screen size – a 15-inch display is finefor most users. Choose a larger screenfor playing computer games or usingdesign software.

l Weight – hold it in your hands if youcan! Remember, you’ll be carrying thelaptop around, or sitting with it on yourknee.

l Controls – Make sure the keyboardand trackpad are comfortable to use andconsider getting a separate mouse.

l Drives – some laptops don’t includeCD/DVD drives and you may need to buyan external one. Alex Brown
