Welcome to The Village Emporium

September/October 2013

Alison & Clare

There’s a real buzz about Daventry these days. There’s a growing choice of independent shops and cafes and with free parking it’s so easy to pop in to the town centre. The iCon Centre has become a focal point for up and coming businesses and we have decided to move our office there to take advantage of all that Daventry offers. So from 1st September we will be right at the heart of Daventry. You are welcome to drop in to say hello.

If you are a food lover then The Deli Barn at Heart of the Shires Shopping Village and Skylark Fields Farm are just down the road – enter our competitions for a chance to win a real treat.

We know many of you will be planning community events leading up to Christmas. Do let us know what’s going on so we can publicise it for you. And if you enjoy local events you will find up to date info on the What’s On pages of our website www.villageemporium.co.uk/events as well as here in the magazine of course.

Where do you go when you need a new power tool, spanner or nuts and bolts for a DIY project? To a high street chain? Did you know that on Daventry’s Drayton Fields Industrial Estate, Danetre Workshop Supplies’ trade counter is also open to the general public?

Established in 2002, Danetre Workshop Supplies is a true family business; owned and run by David Smith and his wife Dawn, they are ably supported by their son Daniel and trade counter manager, Steve Walker. With a combined experience of more than two decades, DWS has built its business through word of mouth recommendations, with account customers and DIY enthusiasts benefiting from a huge range of competitively-priced products and extensive knowledge.

Dawn explains, “We are proud to have slowly grown the business with the support of long-term, loyal customers who know they can rely on us for great service, honesty and information. Often, people will come in knowing they need a tool or fixing but are unsure of what would best suit their project. David and Steve are always on hand to offer ideas and advice and suggest the most appropriate solution, as well as any alternatives, even if that means we send them elsewhere!”

Your one stop shop for tools, consumables and engineering supplies

For a compact store, Danetre Workshop Supplies offers massive buying power. They are part of a national group that enables them to source and order an unbelievable amount and range of hand tools, power tools, nuts and bolts, consumables, handling equipment, welding gear and personal protection equipment. “We have direct accounts with Bosch and Makita, and are distributors for Sealey and Teng Tools” says Dawn. “David is a firm believer in offering great quality and good value, so we only buy from the actual manufacturer to ensure the highest standards. There is a large range of products on-site and anything else can be ordered in and available next day unless you are ordering specialist equipment, in which case we give you a specific timeframe of when it will be delivered. We offer next day delivery to our trade customers whilst the general public can pick up their items in-store.”

Danetre Workshop Supplies is open from 8:30am until 5pm, Monday to Friday. Please call 01327 877577 or visit the trade counter at Unit 9, Baird Close, Drayton Fields Industrial Estate, Daventry, NN11 8RY.

The Crow Road – Iain Banks

‘He’s away the crow road.’ So says Prentice McHoan’s grandmother before she takes that path, and sadly, so now is Banks himself. What better way to recognise the enormous contribution he made to modern fiction than to revisit some of his work, and what better place to

start than ‘The Crow Road’?For a start, it has one of the best opening lines in modern literature: ‘It was the day my grandmother exploded.’ In the aforementioned Prentice, it has an engaging, honest and endearing hero, and in his family it has a complex, disturbing and fascinating cast of characters. There is drama, humour, mystery and philosophy in equal measure. What’s not to love?

The central strand of the story is the disappearance of Prentice’s Uncle Rory – presumed dead by many, but presumed alive by Prentice’s father, Kenneth. Rory’s unfinished papers include the idea of ‘Crow Road’ – a novel? a factual account? Nothing is clear. As Prentice attempts to unravel the thread, Banks moves his own story backwards and forwards in time, switching perspectives and retelling events from different angles. For a novel which is frequently about death, there is an awful lot of humour too – often dark, but equally hilarious. Fans are divided on which of Banks’ novels is his best. It’s a hard choice. How do you choose between say ‘The Wasp Factory’ and ‘Complicity’? Many readers would stake a claim for his science fiction, written as Iain M Banks, and ask you to ‘Consider Phlebas’. I have a great deal of affection for his whisky-logue ‘Raw Spirit’, which is not only

well written, but has been responsible for a lot of good drams – cheers Iain. However, whether or not it is his ‘best’, ‘The Crow Road’ is certainly my favourite – and I know I am not alone.

The Enchanted Wood – Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton has been out of favour for many years, but has recently undergone something of a renaissance. A major exhibition of her work has led many to revisit their childhood favourites – and believe me, some of them have

stood the test of time remarkably well. The Enchanted Wood is the first in the Faraway Tree series, in which three children find themselves living close to the most amazing tree you have ever seen. It grows different fruits at different points, depending on how it is feeling. It is inhabited by all manner of strange folk – Silky the fairy, the old Saucepan Man, Dame Washalot and the Angry Pixie. At the top lives Moonface, in a perfectly round little house with a slide that runs right to the bottom of the tree. And best of all, there is a small ladder through the clouds which leads to a different magical land every time...Joe, Beth and Frannie (the names have been modernised from Blyton’s originals) have all manner of adventures there. Sometimes the lands are full of fun – The Land of Birthdays, for example – while others are slightly more threatening – Dame Snap may no longer be Dame Slap, but her school is still somewhere no-one would like to visit! If you remember loving Blyton as a child, then now might be the time to dig out those old copies. Out & about

Seven years ago The Olde Red Lion in Kislingbury got a makeover and new owners. Paul Collins whose grandfather and great grand father had been custodians of The Olde Red Lion from 1903 to the 1950’s, and his partner Chris Hayward, took on the project of refurbishing the building, rebranding and giving new life to a bankrupt and closed venue. During the past 7 years they have worked hard to gain the excellent reputation the venue now has and gained awards, accolades and recognition along the wa. With ill health and feeling they have done all they can, it is time to hand over the reins to someone else and they are retiring. From September the business will be in the safe hands of Ashleigh Fitzhugh, who Paul and Chris feel is the perfect new custodian of this lovely old building.

Born in Harpole and with a family history which can be traced back to Kislingbury in the 1800’s, Ashleigh, like Paul has Kislingbury in her blood. A staunch Cobblers supporter, Ashleigh and her children can be seen home and away supporting the Cobblers and hardly ever miss a game. Ashleigh went to Campion School, represented the school in sport and was a member of the Sun Inn football team many years ago. The road that has led Ashleigh to The Olde Red Lion was a hard one because

Ashleigh is about to become the first transgender landlady in Northamptonshire. For the past 4 years Ashleigh, born Stuart, has been living her life as a woman. With the full support of her family and friends, Ashleigh is officially able to put the Title Ms in front of her name, with a passport to support this change. It’s been a difficult path but it was an easy decision and Ashleigh can now state that she is able to feel comfortable living life as the person she has always believed she was.

Ashleigh has enlisted the services of another Kislingbury local in the form of Glenn, who has been employed to run the bar. Born in Kislingbury, his mother was until recently the lollypop lady and Glenn has been looking after the Turnpike’s customers for 13 years.

Ashleigh has many plans for The Olde Red Lion, including reinstating a games room, menu changes and regardless of gender everyone will be assured of a warm welcome and fun atmosphere. Please pop in, show your support and reacquaint yourselves with old friends, born and bred in the neighbourhood... you can follow Ashleigh and The Olde Red Lion on Twitter and Facebook or at www.theolderedlion.net

The strapline states “only in Britain, only in pubs” One person who may take issue with those words is Colin Arthur, owner of Rugby Tap. Opened a year ago this new outlet on the local beer scene has found a ready market for those occasions when you want to drink at home or take it elsewhere. The range of local (30 miles) bottled ales stocked now stands at 80 from15 different breweries. Some of these breweries have been brewing for 150 years plus, such as Everards (Leicestershire) and Hook Norton (Oxfordshire). Others such as Nobby’s (Guilsborough) and Purity (Great Alne, Alcester) started in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In the last couple of years’ newcomers such as Gun Dog Ales (Woodford Halse) and Hart Family brewers (Wellingborough) have joined the party. The total number of breweries nationally has now reached over 1,000 showing how a large part of the country has fallen back in love with our national drink.

As well as stocking many other bottled beers from around the world, eclectic wines and speciality whiskies and spirits Colin felt the time was right to offer ‘bright’ beer which has been left to settle and condition in the barrel before being decanted direct into a take-home refillable ‘flagons’ from 1 litre upwards. Larger sizes up to 20 litres are also available, ideal for a barbeque or party. Offering the majority of locally brewed ales ‘on draught’ has been a great success, some of you reading this may remember being sent to the ‘offie’ with a jug and a note to refill for a relative and although licensing

laws have changed since then it’s the same principle. Locally brewed beer, from a local outlet, to create your own ‘local’ at home.

Rugby’s best pubs will be getting involved with the Real Ale Trail as part of the new Rugby Food and Drink Festival 26-29th September 2013

This Autumn sees another Cask Ale Week “Cask ale is a live, natural product, simply bursting with flavours. Yet, nearly 50% of adults have never tried it. The whole point of Cask Ale Week and the Great Big Taste Challenge is to change that, to create a real buzz around Britain’s national drink - and get more people drinking it!”

Army - military-style fitness classes

You may have already noticed that green spaces

across the country are being invaded by groups

of individuals wanting to learn the skills used by the

military to get fit. Over recent years, this bootcamp-

style training has been growing in popularity and

the instructor-led mix of challenging workouts, team

games, circuit training and running have been just

the motivation that thousands have needed to get

active and stay active.

With the swimsuit now tucked safely away at the back of the drawer, you may be forgiven for turning your attention to stocking-up your store cupboards and hibernating for the winter.

We all know however, that regular physical exercise is great for keeping your body and mind in tip-top shape. But if you just can’t face the daily grind of the traditional treadmill, now is the perfect time to try something a little different to banish those post-holiday/winter blues and keep you looking and feeling great until your swimmers re-emerge for next years annual outing.

Ditch the sofa and join the:

‘Walk’-out - Nordic walkingOriginating in Finland in the 1950’s, Nordic walking simulates skiing by way of pushing on special shock-absorbent poles to minimise strain on the joints. Being a gentle sport, it is suitable for all ages and abilities. It uses 90% of body muscle and is said to burn up to 40% more calories than normal walking. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new people and explore the local area whilst improving your fitness.

Party – Zumba®

Founded in 2001, Zumba is a global fitness brand that

fuses a variety of dance styles with easy to follow

choreography and a total body workout. Zumba

claim that their classes are like fitness-parties and with

14million people enjoying Zumba in 151 countries

across the world, who are we to argue?

Stage – Burlesque dancingIn the late 19th century burlesque shows were grand affairs involving music, comedy, variety, and a glamorous headline act who would captivate her audience with her beauty, her dance and the art of ‘the tease’. Many women today use burlesque dancing as a way to keep fit, increase their confidence and have a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun. Classes teach performers how to stand, walk, pose and how to mesmerise their audience through the power of stillness and eye contact. With the option to keep your clothes firmly in place these days, what are you waiting for?

Ring – Boxercise®

Boxercise became popular in the UK in the early ‘90s

and, as the name might suggest, it combines the

principles of boxing and exercise to form an effective

way of cross-training that enhances hand-eye co-

ordination, balance and timing. Classes are safe and

fun and you don’t need previous boxing experience

to take part. Boxercise is suitable for all ages and

levels of ability and more than 1.2 million people in

If you drove a high performance car and never bothered to do routine maintenance would you expect to get the best from it? Probably not! Yet so many of us sit in front of computers or slump in our car seats for hours and wonder why we get back ache. “Pilates is maintenance for your back,” explains Pilates instructor Tina Sheridan. “It will leave you looking toned, feeling revitalised and moving with ease.”

Pilates uses a range of specialised and precise routines, designed to help the body regain its natural capabilities, using mainly floorwork mat exercises. It is the perfect complement to cardiovascular exercise and an established way of regaining the flexibility, mobility and strength lost after an operation or injury. Tina is a qualified STOTT PILATES® instructor with 18 years’ experience helping people of all abilities from world class athletes to those recovering from serious injury, or simply anyone who wants to stay fit and healthy.

Classes near youFrom September Tina will be moving her studio to Whilton Mill, set in the heart of beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. She will continue to work closely with her network of

physiotherapists, podiatrist and medical practitioners from her previous base at East Haddon. Tina limits her class sizes to ensure she gives every client the care they need so the new studio is perfect for groups or one to one sessions. She will also continue her classes at Ravensthorpe, Long Buckby and

Daventry and offer appointments at new clinics at Moulton College and Crick Medical Practice . Between all these locations there are times to suit everyone from early morning men only groups to evening appointments or Saturday morning classes.

For new clients, whether in a group or individually, she starts with a medical history and then a posture analysis. “This means that I can identify muscle weaknesses or any imbalance and pinpoint the areas to work on,” explains Tina. “I can also make sure everyone joins a class that is suitable for them.” To get the best out of Pilates it is important to repeat the exercises learnt in class for 10 minutes or so every day and Tina makes sure all her clients understand how to work safely yet effectively on their own.

Who could benefit from Pilates?Tina’s approach is warm and friendly yet highly professional so all ages from teens to eighty year olds feel relaxed and secure under her watchful eye. Local back surgeons and medical practitioners refer patients to Tina for on-going support. Riders, golfers and other sports enthusiasts find that improved posture, balance and suppleness improve their performance and enjoyment.

If you would like to find out whether Pilates is right for you, visit www.tinapilates.co.uk or call Tina on 07810 380 636 – she is always happy to have a chat.

Eat seasonallyNow the summer holidays have been and gone there are lots of jobs to do in the garden to ensure lots of colour in spring next year. Get all your bulbs planted by end of October. The autumn is a good time to feed your shrubs and hardy perennials in order to promote bud growth for next years’ flowers and you can create colour in pots & borders with winter pansies.

Clear potatoes Once the potato crop is cleared, leave for a few days then fork over the top 20cm, which will reward you with potatoes that you will be amazed you missed when you harvested. Break up the soil and level out before sowing a green manure like mustard, this helps keep the weeds down.

CultivationYour hoe should be kept busy during these months continuing to kill the weeds before they start going to seed. You need to be keeping a close eye on the greenhouse crops as pests are still around taking shelter.

Manuring the plotAs ground becomes vacant you can dig it over and spread manure over the surface. Leave the soil roughly dug in large clumps and the worms will break these up as they get the manure.

In the greenhouse If you are going to be using the greenhouse through the winter, you can now insulate it. Bubble wrap is good and will do the job. Don’t forget you will still need some ventilation or mould will run riot in your greenhouse.

You will need

Pumpkins

Night lights

Small sharp knife (a craft knife works well)

Spoon

You can now buy specialist pumpkin-carving sets which contain plastic serrated saws, scrapers and scoops.

Cooking Oil

Felt-tip Pens

Newspaper for working on

Instructions

1. Draw a circle or hexagon on top of the pumpkin (where the stem is). This will be the lid which you remove so you can insert your hand.

2. Cut through the pumpkin-top with the knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin. Remove the cap, scrape off any pulp and seeds and add a couple of slit vents to allow heat to escape.

3. Scoop out the seeds and pulp using the spoon.

4. Draw a pattern for the face on to the pumpkin with a felt-tip pen. Make the eyes, nose and mouth larger than you think you need, because you will have a hard time cutting out tiny features from the tough skin.

5. Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin. Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

6. Place a night-light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

Have you ever wondered why leaves change colour in Autumn? Here’s a simple explanation:

Leaves convert carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into energy in a process called photosynthesis. The special ingredient for this is the chemical pigment chlorophyll, which gives leaves their bright green colour. But leaves also contain other pigments - carotene and xanthophylls, which are yellow and orange based. These help absorb sunlight, which they transfer to chlorophyll for photosynthesis, but, as Summer comes to an end, leaves can’t continue photosynthesising because of the dry air and lack of sunlight. They stop producing chlorophyll, and the yellow and orange pigments get a chance to shine.

Red hues come from pigments called anthocyanins. Not all trees produce anthocyanins, and even those that do, need exactly the right conditions. Anthocyanins protect the leaves from excess sunlight and enable the trees to recover any last remaining nutrients before the leaves fall off. They give leaves bright red, purple and crimson colours.

You’ll see more vibrant reds in years where there’s lots of sunlight and dry weather. You’ll also see more reds in near-freezing weather when low nutrient levels, and other plant stressors also seem to trigger increased levels of anthocyanins.

Arboretums are great places to view the best displays of fiery foliage – go to www.forestry.gov.uk to find one near you.

Benefi t From Additional Income Streams

The business also has close links with, and is an authorised contractor for a leading sealant supplier. Adding sealant treatments to cleaned drives, patios and decking is not only a great added service for the customer – protecting their hard services for longer – but it is also an excellent way to get add on sales and profi t. I receive excellent quality leads from their website, nearly all of which I convert with the benefi t of sealant treatment as well.

I’m also currently developing a system for restoring people’s garden furniture – another great earning potential and one which will have huge appeal to the lucrative commercial market, especially the likes of the big pub and hotel chains. This is just one of several ideas that we are working on to increase the business opportunities with Jumbojet.

● Boost your income from genuine add on services

● Make the most of every job you do by promoting your service at the same time

● Make an instant success of your business by avoiding all our mistakes

● Develop a loyal following in your local area where word of mouth sells your service for you

● Maximise the multiple marketing streams to help you be successful

● Benefi t from the clear, systemised business model

● Access the huge commercial and domestic market opportunities

All in all I am incredibly proud of JumboJet, its product and service offering, the satisfaction for me and customers alike and now a great franchise opportunity for you.

The franchise fee per territory is just £9,995 + VAT (fi nance is available, subject to status). Our comprehensive franchise package includes all equipment needed, detailed operations manual and extensive training. Dogs are meant to be a man’s best friend. Unequivocally loyal, they stick by us through thick and thin. But have you ever wondered how you’d manage without your car? Equally constant and trusty, you can keep it that way with a few simple maintenance checks.

First things first though. If you want to reduce the risk of a breakdown, get your vehicle serviced regularly! Check your handbook for the manufacturer’s recommendations and then follow them. You don’t need to book your service with the manufacturer - there are plenty of local garages around who are more than up to the job.

Engine Oil Check engine oil levels fortnightly, or before a long journey, by removing the dipstick while the engine is cold, wiping it clean with a cloth, re-inserting it and then checking that the oil falls between the recommended levels marked on the stick. If it doesn’t, top up with a good quality engine oil that is the right grade for your car. Oil lubricates the engine parts and low levels could cause it to eventually seize.

Water Check the coolant level when the engine is cool. Locate the coolant reservoir (usually a translucent plastic tank) and eyeball the level of the coolant against the full and low indicators, and top up as necessary. Adding antifreeze will stop the coolant freezing during winter and will also prevent the build-up of corrosion, so is important all year round.

Tyres Know the correct pressures for your car, and check

them at least every two weeks (including the spare). Also check the tread and general condition, looking for cuts on sidewalls.

Lights With your car turned on and parked, have someone walk around to see that all your lights are working – headlights, indicators, brake, tail and fog lights etc. Replace bulbs as necessary, or get a local garage to do it for you. Also give your lights a clean with a damp cloth, especially during bad weather.

Wipers Wiper blades wear down over time and smear the windscreen if they become worn. Replace them at least once a year for best performance.

Screenwash Water alone will not clear oily road grime and freezes more readily in winter. Use a good quality additive all year round to keep your windscreen clean and visibility clear.

Windscreen Check regularly for stone damage as this can impair vision and distract attention. Minor chips can be easily repaired, but if left untreated, can develop into cracks that may require the whole windscreen to be replaced.

Bodywork Deal promptly with any damage to prevent rust setting in.

If carried out regularly, these checks will help you enjoy safe, worry-free motoring with man’s new best friend!

Simple car checks everyone should know

Did you know that email marketing is still much more e ective than Social Media when it comes to lead conversions? Saying that, social media is a fabulous way to warm those leads up and collect those all important email addresses. It was interesting to read a recent MailChimp report that listed the 6 email mistakes you are making with your email campaigns. 1. Too clutteredTake a look at the layout of your email campaign. Is it easy to navigate? Is it easy on the eye? Is there a consistency in font? If your email is too busy and readers eyes are all over the place then the risk of unsubscribers will increase. 2. Too wordyAdd visuals to every campaign, or perhaps mix it up with a video or an audio player. Lists work just as well. Most people skim read an email, so if your email is too wordy and your paragraphs are too long then it will go straight in the bin!3. Calls to actionWe all know that it’s important to include some calls to action throughout your email campaign but please don’t ask too much from the audience. Ask yourself, is your email all about me, me, me?4. Emails are too infrequent.I have made this mistake! Over the last few years I have been collecting emails from those that have downloaded my eBook. I was saving this data for something special, which didn’t happen until 12 months after the book was launched. Instantly I had a number of unsubscribers, which is not good for business. 5. Emails are too assumptive.Don’t assume that folks want to read your emails, give your audience the opportunity to say no. Respect people’s time and respect their inbox. There is nothing worse than receiving an email every day or every week and there are no instructions to unsubscribe or to ask to be removed. 6. Emails are all about you and not your audience. From my personal experience, and from the mailchimp report, the best type of emails (and blogs) are those that have your audience in mind. You need to provide valuable content that your audience will appreciate and nd useful in order to stay top of mind with those all important potential customers and clients. If you are interested in email marketing services then please do not hesitate to call the Green Umbrella team on 01604 726758.

National Get Safe Online Week is 21 – 25 October

Last week I was out for coffee with a friend and our conversation turned to computers.

“I’m actually a bit scared of mine,” she admitted. “I’m wary of online banking and of buying things online, and I’m terrified to let my eleven-year-old use it because of all the media publicity about paedophiles.”

She’s not alone. A good many of us are worried about online security, but there are real steps we can take to improve our safety.

Use the latest OS (Operating System). The most recent OS is generally the safest. Microsoft’s Windows 8 is their most up-to-date OS and anything earlier should really be upgraded. Don’t forget that free software updates are issued all the time. Take advantage of these and update regularly.

Install security software. The main threats to your online security are hackers, viruses and spyware, (this last one is a programme that may be used to log your credit card details). Ideally you should have a firewall, plus antivirus and anti-spyware software as an absolute minimum. You really need all three, because individually they won’t protect you against every attack. Be sure to update them regularly.

Ditch the SPAM! As far as possible don’t open anything you think is SPAM. Use ‘disposable’ email addresses for registrations on sites with which

you’re unfamiliar, and use SPAM filter software.

Wi-Fi Wisdom! Wireless networks can offer an easy way for people to eavesdrop on your PC. Because they use radio waves, anyone within range can pick up the signal, making them a target for hackers who could be after your financial details, as well as freeloading unauthorised users who might piggyback your signal to access your broadband connection. Use an up-to-date router. Make sure you rename your network to make it more difficult to find, create a unique password and always turn on the encryption.

Backup! Backup! Backup! Just in case. Back all your data up regularly, and from time to time check the backups.

Don’t Forget...Never give out User IDs, Pins or Passwords. No legitimate corporation will EVER ask for them.

Never give out financial or personal information unless you initiated the contact, and you are sure about who you’re dealing with.

For children and teens. Use an appropriate browser and buy or download software which monitors their online activity, limits the amount of time they can spend online, and blocks their ability to send out personal information. Most importantly SUPERVISE THEM!

Visit www.getsafeonline.org.uk for more information about National Get Safe Online week.

Feature

“Love, now that were not going to visit Uncle Felix, do you think we should get involved with the village open gardens on the August Bank Holiday?”.

“Have you seen the garden recently, dear?” I reply reluctantly whilst thumbing through this month’s copy of the potato journal. “It resembles the Sahara Desert after all the sun we’ve had! The only people paying to get in our garden will be the French Foreign Legion.” “Well if you’d take the padlock off the water metre, things might not be so bad.” cometh a sharp response from one of the sun loungers on the terrace.

I briefly recall one of the sprinklers being left on whilst we were in the Isle of Wight for a fortnight last summer and returning to an oasis of biblical proportions.

Just who is responsible for this fascination with showing off our biggest horticultural failures for all to see I wonder. Apparently when The 5th Duke of Devonshire stayed at his ancestral home of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, he promised a free dinner to anyone prepared to visit the house and gardens once a month. Or maybe the National Trust are to blame as in 1884 one of the founder members was asked to help save a garden in South East London and people have been paying to visit ever since.

“Anyway, it’s all in aid of a good cause” returns the sun stroked voice from the terrace. “Oh and just how much renovation do the village stocks need, not to mention the new urinals in the village hall.” whatever next I wonder. “No dear it’s the National Garden Scheme and they support a number of valuable charities.”

Indeed they do, advertising over 3,700 gardens nationally and encouraging 750,000 visitors. That equates to over 2.5 million pound a year raised for charities like Marie Curie and Macmillan, not to mention Perennial, the professional gardener’s benevolence fund, naturally a cause very close to my heart.

“I’m sure we could make the day really special for visitors.” “Yes dear, with you as tour guide and host, how could we

possibly go wrong.” I respond thrilled with the prospect of contributing to my favourite charity.

Like all events, there’s a certain amount of organising to take care of before the day.

For big properties and multiple garden openings, clear car parking with attendants is essential. Advertise the event, local papers, flyers and even radio stations are willing to get involved for free. Why not go that little bit extra, organise plants for sale and possibly tea and cake, prepared by a

local organisation such as the W.I.

Open gardens are a fabulous way to focus on getting the garden ready for summer,

all those jobs that never get done and let you down at parties. Get to know your garden plants names, not just

the common names, think about learning the latin names to really impress the visitors.

“Love, it’s a bit late for water now.” says the missus as I leap into action. “We have a huge collection of latin weeds in our garden that need dealing with if

we stand any chance at all.”

Why not get in touch with the National Garden Scheme and show

your garden off for a worthy cause or visit one instead.
