The Augustana Vikings men’s hockey team took to the ice this weekend for the first two games of the semi final match up with the Sait Trojans. A rematch of last years semi showed the bad blood still existing between the two strong teams. Friday night in Calgary the Vikes skated to a 2-0 loss as the team couldn’t solve the Sait goaltender. Craig Cornelson was the game star for the Vikings.

Saturday was much the same for the Vikings and they dropped the second contest by a 4-2 score. Dan hope and Craig Cornelson scored for the Vikings but again the Sait goaltender stole the show and the victory for the Trojans. The Vikes have outplayed the Trojans and maybe deserve a better fate this far, but this weekend can change a lot for the men. Be sure to join the fan bus coming down to Calgary on Friday evening and cheer on the men for a comeback to remember.

The guy’s basketball team took to the road for the Elite Eight championship in Fort McMurray and had a good showing. They started off really strong against top seed Briercrest (who was ranked 1st in the nation going into the championship), leading by 5 going into the second half, but couldn’t hold off the Clippers in the end. They would bounce back the next day against the Concordia Thunder with a 65-58 win, outscoring the Thunder 24-13 in the 4th. Finally, they ended their season with another close loss to rival N.A.I.T. in the 5th place game. Graduating All-Conference players Dave Shantz and Shayne Bruney combined for 80 points over the weekend and big performances throughout their line-up. Congratulations boys on the 6th place finish, nice work this season.

2013 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championships

By April Strandlund

After months of endless preparation by staff, and months of a grueling season in which the Vikings women’s basketball team dominated the ACAC early with a string of 15 W’s in a season where they won 20/21 regular season games, the Championship weekend was finally upon us over the last 4 days here at Augustana.

The Vikings held the 1st place of the ACAC throughout the entire season only losing to Grande Prairie on February 1st, and proved they were worthy of a 2nd place national ranking among other highly prestigious schools in the CCAA (Canadian Colleges Athletic Association) and the 1st seed of the championship. Augustana showed their strength and depth of bench throughout the season, as well as the championship tournament this weekend, surpassing Concordia handily in their quarterfinal match-up, and knocking off Grant MacEwan by 13 points in a tight semi-final.

Olds College, has accomplished something truly incredible with this being only their 1st season in the ACAC. The Olds Broncos women’s basketball team came into the ACAC Championship’s as the 7th seeded program winning 14/20 games in their own regular season. Not to be looked down upon by anyone, this squad stormed the tournament by immediately making a bold statement, in knocking off the 2nd seeded Kings Eagles women’s basketball team in their quarter-final. They then went on to make another upset as they beat the 3rd seeded Nait in their match-up in the semi-final by a whopping 29 points.

The ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship game got off to a rather quick pace with both teams matching each other’s strides quite evenly for the first 2 quarters; Olds holding the lead for most of the duration. The game remained neck and neck for 3 – 10 minute quarters of play, but as the 4th began the Olds Bronco’s began to steam-roll and earn an 11-point lead within the first 3 minutes of the 4th. With a lead of 15 points over the Augustana Vikings with 2 minutes left to play, the Broncos played solid defensively and controlled the ball much more than the Vikings. The Broncos proved too much to handle offensively for the Vikings as the 1st Seed Vikings fell to the 7th Seed “Cinderella Story” Olds Broncos. The final score was 83-65 Olds.

Players of the Game:

Gold Medalist, #7 Te’Anna Edman-Row off of the Old’s Bronco’s won POG for her squad as she put up 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 steals and 18 points.

Silver Medalist, #11 Taryn Story from the Augustana Viking’s claimed POG for her team with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and a total of 22 points.

2013 ACAC All-Conference Teams

The Vikings teams cleaned out this weekend as the ACAC All-Conference teams were announced. From the women’s basketball team, Taryn Story and Kelsey Lund were named to the ACAC 1st team (north) and Kari Kubinec was named to the ACAC 2nd team (south). Their head coach Leanne Shenton was also honored as she was named ACAC North Division women’s basketball coach of the year. The women won silver at the 2013 ACAC Women’s basketball Championships.

The Women’s Basketball team wasn’t the only Vikings team to have players chosen to play for the ACAC All-Conference teams. On the Men’s Basketball team, Shayn Bruney and David Shantz were picked to play for the ACAC Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team. The men’s team came out 6th in the Men’s 2013 ACAC Basketball Championships. Curling saw Brad Schroeder, Alison Owens & Ben Bates named to the All-Conference Team. The Men’s Hockey All-Conference teams were also announced and three of our Augustana athletes have been selected. Joining the 1st Team is our own Dan Hope and joining the 2nd team is David Tribble, and Scott Aucoin.

Congratulations to all of our outstanding student athletes and good luck to them in the future!

The Final Word Playoff Summary + Sights and Sounds

Hi folks, what a week it has been for Vikings athletics. Before getting to Sights and Sounds, let’s run through the playoff summaries and previews for this weekend and the next.

Curling: Our curling teams had a fantastic showing the weekend before. Our men’s team played well enough to make the gold medal match. While they would go down in defeat, they will get another crack at victory at the end of the month as they qualified for the national championship, which takes place March 20-23 at N.A.I.T. The mixed team had an even better showing, defending their title from

last year in fine style. Congratulations curlers!

Men’s Basketball: The guy’s basketball team took to the road for the Elite Eight championship in Fort McMurray and had a good showing. Graduating All-Conference players Dave Shantz and Shayne Bruney combined for 80 points over the weekend and

big performances throughout their lineup. Congratulations boys on the 6th place finish, nice work this season.

Women’s Basketball: This weekend was a wild one for the women’s basketball team as they hosted the conference championship. They started off in grand style, taking down a scrappy Concordia squad and knocking off defending champion Grant MacEwan on the way to the Gold medal game, which also secured a trip to the national championship in Nova Scotia. In the final, which saw the Augustana Gym as full as I have ever seen it, the girls had an exciting 1st half against the upstart Olds Broncos, before falling behind in the 2nd and ultimately having to settle for Silver. While it wasn’t color the girls wanted, it is still a significant accomplishment, as it is the first ACAC medal in women’s basketball for Augustana. On top of that, there is an even greater prize to be one in two weeks, where the girls may get another shot at the Broncos. Congratulations girls on a fantastic weekend!

Hockey: The boys started off their Semi-final series on the road against arch-rival S.A.I.T. The first game was tightly fought, but the Trojan defense held strong against the Viking attack for the shutout. The second game, played at EnCana Arena in Camrose, The boys battled hard, but were unable to comeback from an early two goal deficit. They now head back to S.A.I.T. this Friday with their backs against the wall, but with most of the championship team back and Blaine Gusdal at the helm, stay strong Vikings faithful, the series is far from over.

Sights and Sounds

•What a great atmosphere it was in the gym during the basketball championship. Vikings fans are still #1.

•What made things more spectacular than usual was having the licensed cheering section on the stands. Not only was it a great way to fit more people into the building, but it also allowed for students to enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two without things getting out of hand.

•For all Vikings fans out there that got to enjoy the above mentioned section, how cool would it be to have that set up during league games next year, for volleyball and basketball? As long as we continue to behave, that could be a possibility.

•Another memorable part of the championship was how interesting the non-contention games turned out to be. King’s vs. Lakeland had some great back and forth moments, S.A.I.T. vs. Concordia had a wild finish with Concordia going on a 19-1 run in the 4th and still losing and finally S.A.I.T. vs. King’s was a 1 point decision in overtime.

•A few other championships that took place this weekend were the CIS Volleyball Finals. In the men’s Semi-final between Laval and Brandon, one Laval player has perhaps the single most ridiculous celebration I have ever seen in a volleyball match. The video can be found at this link near the very end of the match, http://www.cis-sic.tv/
