information about the Retreat on March 17 and First Holy Communion will be presented. Parents of the Sacramental Prep students in grades 3-8

should be in attendance also.

Sunday, February 11th: Regular Schedule of Classes. All students and families should attend the Family Teaching Mass in the Hall at 10:00.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel continues our reading from Mark and describes what some believe was likely to have been a typical day in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus and the disciples that chose to follow him in last week’s Gospel arrive at Capernaum, a small village on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Mark reports that the people respond to Jesus’ teaching with astonishment, noting Jesus’ authority and contrasting it with the scribes’. Early in Mark’s Gospel we already find evidence of the tension that will manifest itself fully in Jerusalem.

After Jesus’ preaching, an even more astonishing thing happens. A man possessed with an unclean spirit calls out to Jesus. As we see in this example and throughout Mark’s Gospel, the spirits and demons seem to know Jesus and are often fearful of him. In fact, they seem to understand Jesus’ identity better than his disciples. As we will read again and again in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus orders the spirit to be quiet and drives the unclean spirit out of the man. Jesus’ ability to heal those possessed by demons is an indication of his power over evil.

In the prescientific age of Jesus’ time, all illnesses were understood to be manifestations of evil and sinfulness. Our modern understanding of illness is very different. Possession by unclean spirits may have been a way to describe what we might call mental illness today. It may have even been a way of describing certain kinds of physical conditions. There is evidence that there were many kinds of exorcists and healers in first-century Palestine. Jesus appears to be like these healers, but he heals with unique authority and connects his healing activities with the words of his preaching.

We are missing the point that Mark is trying to make in this Gospel, however, if we try to explain away the healing work of Jesus. The crowds see in Jesus’ cure of the possessed man further affirmation of his authority. Jesus’ power to heal gives greater credence to his teaching. Jesus impresses the crowds through his words, which are manifested with power in his deeds. Mark’s Gospel tells us that because of the authority with which he healed, Jesus’ fame spread throughout all of Galilee.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God

Throughout the history of Christian spirituality, the interpretation to this beatitude always points out the virtue of chastity. I do not deny it. But it is not good to limit the beatitude with particular virtue called chastity. Rev. Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa says in Christ’s thinking purity of heart does not point out to a particular virtue but it is a quality that should accompany all the virtues. Further he says the clearest opposite of purity of heart is not impurity but hypocrisy.

We all know that both Old Testament and New Testament deeply deal with hypocrisy especially our Lord Jesus Christ condemns hypocrisy of the religious authorities of his time. Hypocrisy is a sin. The reason is:

1. Hypocrisy gives priority to the opinion of the world.

2. Hypocrisy keeps God in the second place.

3. Hypocrisy makes us to hide our true nature.

The intention of an act decides the purity or impurity of the act. So, all the acts are pure when they are done with good intention. When we look into the origin of the word, hypocrisy which is reserved for theatre arts. St. Augustine recalls this in his commentary on the beatitude of the pure in heart: “For hypocrites are pretenders, as it were setters forth of other characters, just as in the plays of theatre.”

This is clearly seen in the lives of Pharisees and scribes. Quoting prophet Isaiah, Jesus says “this people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts” (MT.15:8-9). In the modern world, everything is viewed with profit orientation. It makes even relationships as commodity. As long as a particular relationship (mother, father, husband, wife, sister, brother, uncle, aunty…) is useful, we relate. In other words, there is no genuine or true love in our relationships. We cannot love God unless

Confirmation News“The moral values, ethical codes and laws that guide

our choices in normal times are, if anything, even more important to help us navigate the confusing and disorienting time of a disaster”. - Sheri Fink

Sheri Fink is an American journalist who writes about health, medicine and science. She received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting of a health center. Though she doesn’t speak about her religion, she does speak and insist on moral values of human life for a better world. She says that the moral values protect us from any disorientation. But, even before people like Dr. Sheri Fink, Catholicism, to which we belong, not only speaks and insists on moral values but also tells us that they are God given guidelines for maximizing “the divine” within ourselves and that is the way for the dawn of the kingdom of God. No individual person or married couple with the failures in moral values looked high and the history also continue to prove us that without the moral values there is no joy and peace. Our Confirmation program not only informs the candidates with the moral values but also encourages them to dwell in to be the true disciples of Christ.

January 28, 2018 is the “Fourth Week in Ordinary Time”. On this weekend both the first and second year Confirmation Candidates have their sessions. The first-year candidates will have their session on “Sacrament of Marriage”, right after the 12 Noon Mass from 1.15 PM to 2.15 PM at the faith formation building. And the second-year candidates will have their session on “How the Christian Ethics is meaningful for life” at the faith formation building from 6.30 PM to 8.00 PM.

It is required for all the candidates to attend any one of the weekend Mass and do the sign-up sheets in the vestibule.

If you have any questions or concerns please call me on my cell phone 781-244-9162 or email me at [email protected].

Thank you.Fr.Xavier

The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary TimeBlessed are the pure in heart, for

Prayer: Loving God, I thank you for your blessings. But ignoring them, I run after world’s glory. I feel sorry for it and being hypocrite in my words and deeds. Give me grace to be pure in heart. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
