Restaurant Review 1 (Rewritten from original)

Now that you are planning to open a restaurant it is important that you read how other restaurants are reviewed. This is a real restaurant review about the vegetarian restaurant The Coup in downtown Calgary.

Fill in the select the correct word.

The Coup’s Soup

It amazes me how unaware I can be sometimes .  I didn’t even know that The Coup served only vegetarian dishes until after I finished an good lunch there one day.  I realized after I ate, while I was trying to focus through the last couple of hours at my job, that, hey… I just ate at a vegetarian place!  No meat in sight!  And you know what?  I couldn’t even tell.  Maybe it’s because as much as I love meat, I also like vegetarian items like tofu.  Maybe I was just hungry and enjoying the company of my dining companion so much that it really didn’t matter what we were eating, so long as it tasted good.  Whatever it was, all I know is that I enjoyed eating at The Coup.

I’d been wanting to try this place for a while, but find that it’s very busy during the lunch hour.  I planned a visit on a less-busy Friday (close to a long-weekend so less people are at work) for 11:30am, hoping that this time would help get us a table.  Lucky for us, the method worked.  Only a few of the tables were occupied and we took a seat near the windows, where it opened onto the patio.  The space itself isn’t very large but has a nice, relaxed atmosphere, and it’s connected to what they call the Meet Lounge next door.  I didn’t get a chance to peek into the lounge side.

A lot of items looked really good, but when our server told us the Soup of the Day was broccoli, it sounded so delicious that I had to somehow work it into my meal.  They offer a half-size soup, so I opted for this to be able to get an accompanying dish and not feel so full.  My dining companion had the same train of thought.  We both loved the rustic quality of the broccoli soup – you can definitely tell that it’s homemade.  It was warm, chunky, and seasoned just right.  Served with a side of toasted focaccia, it was a great start to the meal.

For my main, I chose the Lotus Root salad (warm Asian greens, lotus root and organic cherry tomatoes in a citrus ponzu sauce, topped with toasted pine nuts and crispy tofu). After I heard “crispy tofu,” I wanted it very much.  As a lover of all things crispy and all things tofu, this was a great combination.  Everything was fresh and crisp, with the greens were seasoned nicely in the ponzu sauce.  I actually felt very healthy eating this. It was just the right amount of food.

The person I was dining with chose the Beachfront Hot Pot (spicy coconut tomato lime broth loaded with seasonal vegetables, lotus root, edamame, lemongrass and rice vermicelli noodles), a recommendation from our server as she couldn’t decide between two dishes.  It was very well received and she said it was an excellent choice.

By the time we’d finished, the place was filled up with the lunch crowd and the patio was starting to fill up, even though it was chilly outside.  We were glad we chose The Coup for our lunch date. We both vowed to make another date to try some of their other dishes very soon.  They always have new items and specials that sound interesting.  I also like that The Coup supports local farmers and uses organic fruits and vegetables as much as possible.  It always feels good to support a place that cares about fresh, local ingredients.

Even if you’re a meat lover, give The Coup a try.  You probably won’t miss the meat – I know I didn’t!

It amazes me how oblivious I can be sometimes.  I didn’t even know that The Coup served exclusively vegetarian dishes until after I finished an epic lunch there one day.  I realized afterwards, while I was trying to focus through the last couple of hours of work, that, hey… I just ate at a vegetarian place!  No meat in sight!  And you know what?  I couldn’t even tell.  Maybe it’s because as much as I love meat, I also love the more popular vegetarian items like tofu.  Maybe I was just hungry and enjoying the company of my dining companion so much that it really didn’t matter what we were eating, so long as it tasted good.  Whatever it was, all I know is that I enjoyed eating at The Coup.

I’d been wanting to try this place for a while, but find that it’s way too busy during the lunch hour if it’s not timed right.  I set a lunch date on a quieter Friday (adjacent to a long weekend so less people at work) for 11:30am, hoping that our earlier arrival would work to get us a table.  Lucky for us, the tactic worked.  Only a few of the tables were occupied and we took a seat near the windows, where it opened up to the patio.  The space itself isn’t very large but has a nice, relaxed vibe, and it’s connected to what they call the Meet Lounge next door.  I didn’t get a chance to peek into the lounge side, however.

Peter’s is the Calgary Burger tradition. Since1963, lineups have always had 30-40 people in them, and there are four lines. The drive-through is always lined up with cars, and parking is hard to find. The service is always quick, considering how busy they are, most likely due to the cash only policy. The secret to Peter’s success is the high quality burgers, the special sauce, and the custom of giving more than other restaurants (1.5 hamburger patties on a single burger), but something has changed. The lineups are not as long as they used to be, the buzz isn’t the same, and no one really knows why.

Last time I was there, we did not have to wait at all. Given it was a nice day on a Saturday right at lunchtime things should have been different. I love Peter’s and will continue to love them, but I think they have lost the title of Calgary’s burger king. I think the new champion of Calgary’s burger scene is Rocky’s Burger Bus, where they serve not only the biggest burger in Calgary, but likely the biggest burger most of us have ever eaten. Calgary’s best burger joint

There is a pretty good chance that Calgary has the best fast food burgers in the world, as we should, given that most are made with the best beef in the world. The question is, who has the best burgers in Calgary. There are many contenders, Peter’s, CB’s, Rocky’s Burger Bus, and so on. While I haven’t been to CB’s in a long time, there are two contenders I remember going to as a kid with my father, Rocky’s and Peter’s.

Peter’s is the Calgary Burger Institution. Around since 1963, lineups used to stretch 30-40 people deep, four lines at a time. The drive through was always lined up with cars, and parking was scarce. The service was always quick considering the volumes, most likely due to the cash only policy. The secret to Peter’s success was the high quality burgers, the special sauce, and the practice of giving just a little bit more than the guy down the street

(1.5 patties on a single burger), but something has changed. The lineups are not as long as they used to be, the buzz isn’t the same, and no one really knows why.

Last time I was up there we did not have to wait at all, and given it was a nice day on a Saturday, right at lunch time, things should have been different. I don’t know for sure, but I felt like my burger had a little more bun, a little less meat, and a little less something special. It almost seems as though the new owners thought they could save a little money, and make a little more money, by making little changes that no one would notice. Its obvious however that those changes have been noticed, even though no one can put their finger on it.

I personally love Peter’s and will continue to love them, but I think they have lost the title of Calgary’s burger king. I think the new champion of Calgary’s burger scene is Rocky’s Burger Bus, where they serve not only the biggest burger in Calgary, but likely the biggest burger most of us have ever eaten. In fact Gourmet Magazine dubbed Rocky’s burger the “meat orgy” it is so big. At almost two inches thick, the thing is a beast, and one of the most delicious no frills burgers I have ever eaten. With just relish, mustard, and onions topping this amazing burger, the beef speaks for itself instead of letting fancy sauces or ingredient do the talking. Furthermore, this is one place a lineup still exists, and they take more than just cash. Not to worry about waiting though, with upwards of 50 burgers at a time on the grill, the output is quick, even though these burgers take substantially longer to cook than your typical fast food patty.

There is no doubt in my mind, Rocky’s is the hands down winner in this burger war.

What do you think? Is there another burger joint that can take the title?

Happy eating,

Many people dream of opening their own restaurant. Here is a step-by-step guide to get you started

Adapted from about.com guide January 22, 2013 (http://restaurants.about.com/od/openingarestaurant/ht/How_to_open.htm)

Here is how:

Decide on a Restaurant Concept

The first step in opening a new restaurant is to decide what type of restaurant it is going to be. Are you looking at opening an expensive restaurant? A more informal restaurant? Do you have a specific type of food or cuisine you plan to serve, like food from Italy, France, or India? Perhaps you want to specialize in one specific area of the food industry, like a seafood restaurant, or a wine bar. Before you move to step two you first need to describe what kind of restaurant you want to open.

Choose a Restaurant Place

Location, location, location. Before you run and sign a contract for your restaurant location, do your research. Is the restaurant location in a busy area, with a lot of people walking around? If not, is there enough parking for cars? Have ten other restaurants come and gone in the same spot? If so, should you be opening a restaurant in that place?

Choose a Restaurant Name

This is perhaps the most fun step in opening a new restaurant. Choose a restaurant name that means something. It can be related to your restaurant concept or location. For example, an Italian restaurant can be called Giovanni’s. Or it can be named after the owner, for example, Paula Deen’s , The Lady & Son’s.

Write a Restaurant Business Plan

There are two important reasons you need a restaurant business plan. First, it helps you see big problems before they happen. For example, not enough people in the area or it is a bad location. And second, no bank will give you money without one.

Find Financing

This is the step that stops most people from actually opening their own restaurant. Although it is hard to find money for a restaurant, it is not impossible. Between

banks, small business agencies and private investors, financing is possible. Just remember to be professional.

Apply for Licenses and Permits

These are documents that are connected to what you are allowed to sell or display in your restaurant. Many licenses and permits take several weeks, even months to be approved. So as soon as you know you are approved with financing, you should start filling out the forms. Common licenses and permits for restaurants, regardless of state, include alcohol licenses, sign permits and workers compensation for benefits.

Page 20: esllearningbydesign.comesllearningbydesign.com/.../resources-for-esl-7-pullout-food-unit.docx · Web viewThere is a pretty good chance that Calgary has the best fast food burgers

Food Unit: Phil Bird, Anna Jensdorttir and Byron Sieben 20

Design the Restaurant

An empty room fills up fast when you start adding big kitchens, walk-in refrigerators, a bar, rest rooms and waiting area. The design of a restaurant should be a balance between looking good and having enough space so that people are comfortable.

Write a Restaurant Menu

A well-written restaurant menu should describe the different foods that you have to offer for customers, and it should be easy to read and follow. A few things to avoid on a restaurant menu include photos that are not of the food, and too many side comments about the different options that have to do with the food. Try to keep it neat and organized.

What to put in your restaurant

Once you have your restaurant design finished, you can start buying commercial kitchen equipment like stoves, and furniture like tables. To save money, consider buying or renting used equipment. Commercial equipment that advertise as being friendly towards the environment cost more at first, but usually end up being better in the long term.

Hire Restaurant Staff

You need to begin hiring for the kitchen and for the front of the restaurant. Kitchen staff, wait staff to take orders, and bartenders to make drinks, are all important to help create a successful restaurant.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Many people dream of opening their own restaurant. Here is a step by step guide to get you

started.

By Lorri Mealey, About.com Guide

Here's How:

Decide on a Restaurant Concept

The first step in opening a new restaurant is deciding what type of restaurant it is going to be. Are you looking at opening a high-end fine dining restaurant? A casual diner? Do you have a specific type of cuisine you plan to serve, such as Italian, French or Indian? Perhaps you want to specialize in one area, like a microbrewery and pub. Before you move onto step two you first need to define what kind of restaurant you want to open.

Select a Restaurant Location

Location, location, location. It can make or break a restaurant. Before you run and sign a lease for your restaurant location, do your homework. Is the restaurant location in a busy area, with plenty of foot traffic? If not, is there enough parking? Have ten other restaurants come and gone in the same spot? (warning bells should be loud and clear, if that is the case.)

Choose a Restaurant Name

Probably the most fun step in opening a new restaurant. Select a restaurant name that means something. It can be a reflection of your theme or location. i.e. An Italian restaurant called Giovanni’s or it can be called after the owner, such as Paula Deen’s Savannah Restaurant, The Lady & Son’s.

Write a Restaurant Business Plan

There are two important reasons you need a restaurant business plan. 1. It helps you see big fat problems in your restaurant plan, like not a big enough population base or a bad location. And 2. No bank in their right mind will finance you without one.

Find Financing

This is the step that stops most people from actually opening their own restaurant. Financing. Although it is increasingly harder to get financing for a restaurant, it is not impossible. Between banks, small business agencies and private investors, financing is

possible. But you need to show up to your interview prepared and professional, showing potential investors that you know what you are doing.

Apply for Licenses and Permits

Many licenses and permits take several weeks, even months to be approved. So as soon as you know you are good to go with your financing, you should start filling the paperwork. Common licenses and permits for restaurants, regardless of state include liquor licenses, sign permits and workers compensation.

Design the Restaurant

A large empty space quickly fills up when you start adding commercial kitchens, walk-in refrigerators, a bar, rest rooms and waiting area. The design of a restaurant should be a balance between aesthetics and seating capacity, always keeping practicality in mind.

Write a Restaurant Menu

A well-written restaurant menu should be both descriptive easy to read and have a clear, uncluttered layout. A few things to avoid on a restaurant menu include clip art and too many disclaimers.

Stock you Restaurant

Once you have your restaurant design down, you can start purchasing commercial kitchen equipment and furniture for your dining room and other areas in the front of the house. To save money, consider buying used equipment, as well as leasing certain items. Commercial equipment with the Energy Star logo can cost more at first, but usually pay for themselves in as little as one year.

Hire Restaurant Staff

As you get closer to opening day you need to begin hiring for both the kitchen and floor. Kitchen staff, wait staff and bartenders are all integral parts of any restaurant, and you want to hire the perfect person for each position.

Advertising is a must for most new restaurants. Supplement traditional advertising, such as newspapers and radio ads, with new media. Don’t overlook the power of a good website for your restaurant. Use social media sites, like Twitter, MySpace and FaceBook, to spread the word about your new place.

Match the Measurements!

Often in recipe books, measurement words are shortened because there is not enough space to write the whole thing out. They take too much space, and then the page looks too busy! So abbreviations are used instead of the whole word. An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. Instructions: Take the long name and match it to the shortened words (abbreviations)

Food Expressions

Your task is to use the internet to find out what these English expressions mean.

1. Before you start using the Internet, fill in the “What I think this means” column with your best guess as to what these English expressions may mean.

2. Use the internet to find out what these English expressions mean and use the expression in a sentence you create by yourself.

How to write a recipe like an expert

Writing your recipes down is important. It ensures that the recipe tastes the same each time you make it. It also makes it easier for other people to make your recipe. When you are planning your menu, it is important that you create a clear and easy to follow recipe.

Parts of a recipe:

Name of the recipe Information about the recipe Ingredient lists How to prepare

Name of recipe:

When you name your recipe, try to make it sound delicious. Instead of just “Fried Chicken,” you could call it “Mom’s Favorite Tasty Fried Chicken.”

What are 5 adjectives you could use to describe food?1. ___________________________________2. ___________________________________3. ___________________________________4. ___________________________________5. ___________________________________

Ingredient List

List all the ingredients in the order you will use them. Write all the measurements beside each ingredient. Do not use short versions (use

tablespoon instead of TBSP, etc…) If the recipe has different parts, list each part’s ingredients as their own list.

o Example: If you are baking a cake with icing/frosting, list all of the cake ingredients together and list of the icing/frosting ingredients in their own lists.

If an ingredient is used in two parts of the recipe, write “divided” beside the ingredient and only list it under the part where it is first used.

Capitalize the first letter of each ingredient. How would you list: chocolate chips, 1 Cup, divided?

o ___________________________________________________________________

How to Prepare

Try to say the size of cookware (bowls, spoons, pans, pots, etc…) Try to be a concise (short) as possible when writing instructions. Make sure to give the temperature

o If using the burners on the top of the stove tell the temperature as: “Low”, “Medium” or “High”

o If using the oven write the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit (example: 160 degrees Celsius / 350 degrees Fahrenheit)

Make sure to give how long the food should cook If different parts of the recipe have different instructions, make sure you separate

them into their own sections (just like the ingredient list). If you can, tell the cooker how they should serve the food.

o Example: This chicken is really good with rice.
