Mimic PoemWrite a mimic poem of "Mother to Son" (can be found at http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/mother-to-son/).  Create your own version of the poem with your own speakers and themes/topics.  Examples in the past have been teacher to student, movie characters to other characters, etc. . . The structure of the poem essentially remains the same; however, the words are changed to fit the new speaker/topic. Create a visual(s) to go with the oral presentation of your poem that demonstrates ideas /themes from your poem-include citation of resources used if applicable. Everything should be school appropriate.

Mother to SonBy: Langston Hughes

Well, son, I'll tell you:Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. (metaphor)It's had tacks in it, (symbols begin that represent parts of her life not being a crystal stair)And splinters,And boards torn up,And places with no carpet on the floor -- (beginning of summed up in one line/ word)Bare.

But all the time (begin what they’re still doing to keep going)I'se been a-climbin' on,And reachin' landin's,And turnin' corners,And sometimes goin' in the darkWhere there ain't been no light. So boy, don't you turn back. (beginning of advice)Don't you set down on the steps'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.Don't you fall now --For I'se still goin', honey,I'se still climbin',And life for me ain't been no crystal stair. (metaphor comes full circle)

(words that tie to metaphor-tacks, splinters, boards torn up, bare spots in carpet, dark stair case, setting down on steps)

Coach to New Runner (EXAMPLE MIMIC POEM)Well, Runner, I’ll tell you; Life for me ain’t been an easy race,It’s had potholes,And merciless temperatures,And steep, endless hills,And no water in sight- Thirsty. But through it all,I keep shufflin’ along,And counting mile markers,And Carb loading,

And sometimes holding back the tears,As the blisters keep on growing. So Runner, don’t you quit,Don’t you hide those running shoes in the closet,Just because you are tired. Don’t you stop trekkin,For I’m still pushing hard,I’m still running that race, And life for me ain’t been no easy race.
