March 4, 2018 Lent 3WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning. Here are some notes about our service:

Holy Communion Today the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be offered in worship. In Holy Communion we receive the body and blood of Jesus along with the bread and wine of communion. Not only do we receive forgiveness from God in this meal, but we also express a oneness in faith. For this reason, we would ask that if you are not a member of Living Savior (or another WELS/ELS congregation) you please speak to pastor or vicar before joining us for communion. We look forward to sharing this meal with you in the future.

Restrooms – The restrooms are located out the back doors and down the second hallway to the right.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem.

COMMON SERVICEOur worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Church and connects us to something much bigger than ourselves.

THEME FOR TODAY’S SERVICE:1

Understanding the Church Year - LentThe word “Lent” comes from an Old English word for spring (“lengthen,” the time of the year when the days grow longer). For the last 1700 years, the Church has set aside the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter as a time for repentance and prayer. During Lent we solemnly remember our Lord’s suffering and death, but it is not without hope. For we know that Jesus suffered and died and then rose victoriously on Easter morning. So while our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet (we omit “alleulias” and the “Gloria”), we live in the hope of Easter

WHY DO I NEED HIS DEATH?

GATHERING RITE Teach Us the Wisdom of GodMarty Haugan, GIA Publications 2016

Choir: Lord, in the desert for forty days, for us you suffered, for us you prayed.

Abide with us till darkness is past, and Easter joy floods our hearts at last.

C: (sings)

INVOCATIONP: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINSP: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

But I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

RESPONSIVE VERSESP: During Lent, we reflect on the meaning of humility.C: The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.P: Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less.C: The Son of Man came not to gain, but to give up all he had.P: Humility is forsaking selfish ambition, and seeking unity with others.C: The Son of Man came not to be loved, but to love.P: Humility is trusting that God will meet our needs if we seek his righteousness.C: The Son of Man became poor so that we could become rich.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.

P: Merciful God, we confess that our constant striving for approval leaves us empty and unfulfilled. We ask that you humble our hearts and replenish us with gifts of the spirit. Help us serve as Jesus served and love as Jesus loved. Deliver us from pride, ambition and jealousy, and fill us with mercy, willing to serve one another in humility and love.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 8:1-10 You have been declared “not guilty” because of Christ’s humble death. Therefore, there is no condemnation for you! Rather, you live in the realm of the Spirit and the Spirit lives in you! Giving you strength to battle against the sinful flesh!

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

4

Page 6: Web viewBut I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, ... Light from Light ... Today take a closer look at Hebrews 10

5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

THE GOSPEL LESSON John 2:13-22We see Jesus’ great zeal for his Father’s house because he took seriously his mission here on earth. His mission was motivated by love as he came to be destroyed and to rise to life three days later so that you too might live! Jesus cleansed the greed from the temple. Is there something that needs to be cleansed in your temple?

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15

So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17

His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

5

Page 7: Web viewBut I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, ... Light from Light ... Today take a closer look at Hebrews 10

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY Speak, O Savior; I Am Listening | 283

THE SERMON TEXT Exodus 20:1-171 And God spoke all these words:2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.3 “You shall have no other gods before me.4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.13 “You shall not murder.14 “You shall not commit adultery.15 “You shall not steal.16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

The season of Lent is a time of reflection and preparation. It is a time to both consider the condition of our hearts and lives and the words and works of Jesus as

he carried out our salvation. To aid in this reflection and preparation we will be holding midweek Lenten services. These services (the next five Wednesdays at 7

pm), distinct from our normal Sunday worship, all serve to focus our hearts and minds on God’s great work of salvation.
