I think my love of travelling and experiencing other cultures is definitely the reason why I’m so passionate about history. For me, culture and history are so well connected, you can’t have one without the other.

Last semester I enrolled in a Chinese history class and I can’t say I knew much about the culture, languages or history beforehand. I was so inspired by my professor and the immersive history that I decided to book a flight to China and spend a month backpacking around the country, visiting all of the historical sites we learned about in class. The trip marked the 20th country I’ve been to.

I really feel like the College gave me a deeper level of learning and a lot of that is thanks to the professors. Education is so important and such a big investment, so to see professors who are so vibrant about what they teach and passionate about helping students be successful is simply amazing.

I’ve been caring for animals since before I can remember. I grew up on a hobby farm just on the outskirts of Penticton with hundreds of animals and I knew from a young age I wanted to spend my life working with them – and like many kids, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

When it came time to apply for post-secondary, I wasn’t confident about pursuing a science degree because sciences didn’t come naturally to me. But before I could apply anywhere, I had to take a pre-requisite course, so I decided to go to Okanagan College simply because it was conveniently close to my house.

I expected to go to the College and leave with my course credit – I didn’t expect to find this really amazing learning atmosphere. The professors work so closely with students and give so much one-on-one attention because of the small class sizes.

Learning at OC gave me all the confidence I needed to take the plunge and enrol in my first year of sciences. I’m now finishing my second year of the Associate of Science program and am preparing to transfer to a university to complete my degree with a major in Zoology. I’m in an amazing position to work toward my dream of becoming a veterinarian.

Q: Why did you choose to study at Okanagan College?A: I chose to study here because the program is flexible with my schedule while playing junior hockey and gives me a healthy balance to continue to work on mental health awareness. Also, I heard great things about the College and that the transition from high school to post-secondary learning was smoother – and it was.

Q: What are your biggest passions in life?A: I’m passionate about hockey and mental health advocacy. I’ve been playing hockey since I was five and my dream is to play in the NHL. I’ve also been a mental health advocate since age 14 and it’s the most amazing and fulfilling work I’ve ever done. I also think education is power and know that if hockey doesn’t work out for me, or say I got an injury and couldn’t play anymore, I need a solid education to fall back on. I want to set myself up for success.

Q: What has been your favourite achievement in your life so far?A: I was in Grade 9 when I did my first presentation on mental health and for the first while, nobody really took me seriously. I’ve come a long way since then and have really developed my voice. I’ve proudly presented at Rogers Arena in Vancouver in front of 1,500 students, been a Jack Talks speaker and I recently received recognition for my work on mental health advocacy from the Prime Minister. It’s so rewarding to see the work I’m doing is making a difference for mental health.

Q: How has your experience been at OC?A: It’s truly been great and I want to encourage any athlete who is pursuing their sport to attend OC to get an education while following their passion at the same time. The learning is flexible and you can definitely find a healthy balance without having to compromise on education or training. This is a quality institution and every single professor is willing to go the extra mile to support you.

I’m originally from Jamaica and because of my mom’s job we moved around a lot. Before coming to Kelowna eight years ago, I lived in the United States for many years – in South Carolina, Connecticut and most recently New York.

She bought me a laptop around age nine which I used to keep connected with friends whenever we moved to a new place. I got into online games and, around age 11, I transitioned to creating and programming my own games with a few of my friends. From that moment on, I knew I loved coding and everything in my life always came back to computers.

Kelowna is such a beautiful place to live and the education I received at Okanagan College has been of the highest quality. My degree is so versatile and I can work anywhere I want. For myself, I see a future in the project management sector of programming where I can work in a team, engage with clients and problem solve both on screen and off. I’m pretty excited to see what’s next.

Q: Why did you choose to become an RV Service Technician?A: I always liked the idea of going into a trade because once you’ve got the training you can work anywhere you want, nationwide. I was interested in the RV Tech program because it has a unique mixture of trades all wrapped into four wheels. I get to do plumbing, electrical, welding, body working, carpentry and more – it’s a bit of a jack of all trades.

Q: How has your experience been at Okanagan College?A: The College is my home. I actually live in Saskatchewan and could train in Alberta, but I keep coming back here year after year. The training and instructors are great and they really take you under their wing. My experience has been nothing short of top notch.

Q: What has been your favourite part of studying here? A: As an apprentice, you come back to school every other year and I’m always happy to see the same classmates and instructors. Seeing those friendly faces, sharing stories of everyone’s work experiences and hearing how they did things is everything to me. You become a bit of a family, for sure.

Q: What’s next for you?A: I’d like to run my own business one day, take care of customers and offer services that nobody else can supply. For now, I’m working as an RV Technician in Saskatchewan – a job which I got straight out of school – and I’m going to keep honing my trade, provide quality work and give quality service.

Q: Why Animation?Anna: Animation is my life. It’s the thing I’m certain I was born to do. For me, it’s always come back to drawing and one day I realized I could do it for a living. I’ve been pursuing my goal of becoming an animator ever since.

Q: How was your first year of study? Anna: I’ve changed a lot since I started studying here and have come into my own. My skill has improved astronomically, my designs have become more sophisticated and I know what I’m looking for when I draw something.

Q: Best part about this program?Anna: The equipment is amazing. I’ve only ever had small art tablets and really rudimentary drawing programs. It’s a special experience to work and learn on cutting-edge equipment.

Q: How has this program prepared you for a successful career? Ken: We get a lot of hands-on experience. After learning the proper foundations, we move on to projects that reflect what we may get in the industry, even using assets from real shows. We also get to know people working in the industry, which is helpful for starting a career.

Q: How have you benefitted from the mentorship?Ken: The mentorship program has been amazing. It’s been great to be able to have someone in the industry to answer my questions and they’re also really cool people to learn from. My mentors are super nice and encouraging and I always learn something new whenever we meet.

Q: Why Pastry Arts? A: I’ve always loved baking. My grandma has a ton of fruit trees and once a big vegetable garden on her property and I used to spend a few weeks each summer visiting her. My favourite part was – and still is – to be in the kitchen with her, learning how to make amazing food. She taught me her own recipes and even traditional Russian recipes passed down to her from her grandma. It really fostered my love of baking and going into Pastry Arts has allowed me to express my artistic side.

Q: What do you like about chocolate work?A: It’s different. Specialty chocolates are a craft industry in Europe that hasn’t been fully adopted in North America yet. When I was in Belgium and France, I fell in love with these chocolate shops that specialize in one thing and do it so well. Chocolate is one ingredient but the flavour combinations are endless. Yes, I’m a trained Pastry Chef but I actually specialize as a Chocolatier.

Q: Best part about studying at OC?A: The creative freedom and individuality. If you successfully completed your assignment ahead of time, the chefs allowed you to make or learn something outside the curriculum, something that interested you. There were a lot of opportunities to get involved in the industry as well. In fact, the first time I fell in love with chocolate work was when I volunteered to help one of the chefs with an event that required bonbons.

Q: Favourite experience at OC?A: The chefs are amazing instructors and they look after their students. It was definitely a family-style program and I know they cared about my success and well-being beyond the classroom. They did everything to make sure I got the experience I needed to go out, network and build my brand as a chef.

Q: Best experience in this program?A: Getting to participate in the various culinary competitions. The Canadian Culinary Championships Gold Medal

Plates competition is held at OC every year and students get to work with the competing chefs. I worked on a team with three other students helping Chef Alex Chen (of Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar in Vancouver, B.C.) and we helped him prepare his dishes. Chef Chen won the championship and was named the best chef in Canada. After the competition, he offered me a job at his restaurant. I also competed and won bronze at Skills Canada.

Q: What was your biggest accomplishment?A: Being the youngest person at OC to complete Professional Cook Level 3, the Red Seal level. I came into this program at age 16 as a dual-credit student in high school. The program is so immersive, the chefs push you to be more creative than before and they challenge you to work with new product you aren’t familiar with. It has really brought more light to my career and I’ve got a great head start on my future.

Q: What did you love about your program?A: I loved creating lasting friendships with my classmates and really making a difference in the quality of life for seniors. The practical experience in the clinical world and seeing people that you’ve helped gives you such a rewarding feeling of accomplishment.

Q: What’s next for you?A: Working as a care aid in the Vernon community trying to improve people’s health and well-being. Eventually I’d like to work for Interior Health and, once my children are in school, I’d like to explore the idea of bridging to a Registered or Licensed Practical Nursing program and continuing my career in the health industry.

Q: What was your favourite moment while studying here?A: My entire class turned into this giant family. Training for any health care job can be demanding and being surrounded by support is crucial. So, I’d say some of my favourite moments were the small ones – going to the beach or Kalamalka Lake pier with my classmates on our breaks, enjoying the student events on campus and just the overall sense of community we created.

Q: How was your practicum experience? A: The practical experience was a little nerve-wracking at first. However, the teachers were very supportive, understanding and caring about our anxieties, fears and doubts going into the practicum. They helped us through any struggles we had and it was amazing to get hands-on experience in the real world while having their support.

I got my start in the wine industry about seven years ago when I volunteered to pick grapes at Tantalus Vineyards. I loved it so much that I wanted to try all the different roles at Tantalus and now I think I’ve worn just about every hat you can think of – and I’ve gained a really great understanding of what it takes to be a part of a successful winery.

I knew I wanted to grow my career in this industry so I enrolled in the three wine certificate programs Continuing Studies offered, while I was still working full-time. I got equipped for my career and in the process I also uncovered a ton of really cool family history that I never knew about – my grandma used to make her own wine in the 1940s and my paternal grandpa distilled moonshine, and that’s just the start of it. It turns out wine and craft alcohols run in my blood.

When I made all of these connections, I couldn’t help but feel like I was meant to be here. I’ve been working very hard for many years; now that I own a vineyard, I’m literally planting vines for my future dream of running a small boutique winery.

Q: What inspires you in life?A: The idea of expanding my knowledge and constantly achieving new levels of personal growth. I grew up in the small town of Blue River, B.C. and after I graduated high school I just felt stuck. I was so excited when I learned the College had programs for people with disabilities, so I decided to leave town to expand my mind and my abilities.

When I first started going to school at the College I thought all of it was going to be a fight and I was pleasantly surprised to find it was anything but. There was a lot of emotional support and financial help that I wasn’t in any way expecting and everyone was non-judgmental and very accepting of me and my needs.

I’ve been working on healing, breaking negative cycles in my life and being a positive role model to my kids. So, I took time to focus on myself and figure out my dream. To take care of my spirit and heart and to mark that change in my life, I decided to move to Vernon about four years ago with my kids and pursue a career in massage therapy.

The College helped me reach my educational goals. I got excellent grades, worked hard and was respected by my instructors when I needed to take a break for my mental health. I graduated this year as a proud ambassador of Okanagan College and a positive influence not only for my kids but to my friends who I encourage all the time to go back to school – to go to the College.

I’m preparing to apply to massage therapy school and want to run my own massage therapy business where I can go to places like addiction centres and transitional houses for women to volunteer my services and help spread healing.

I chose to study at Okanagan College because of the familiarity. I knew a lot of people who had great experiences with their professors and my personal experience at OC so far has been amazing.

I’m a real people-person and one of my favourite things is to meet new students and hear about their experiences and what they’re working on in their studies. It’s probably the reason why I wanted to become an Aboriginal Peer Mentor at my campus. Education is power and I want to be able to help encourage and support students while they’re at the College.

What I love more about the College is all of the extracurricular activities and events. The business program specifically has many services, activities and clubs that offer a more enriching learning experience.

Right now I’m partnered with a local business and my career goals are to help grow that business and to also pursue my CPA designation after graduation.

Q: What has been your favourite part of studying here?A: The support. When I came here I didn’t expect there to be so much help and not just from the International Department, from every person I met. International helped me one-on-one with a lot of the logistics and paperwork and connected me with tons of resources. One of the best surprises for me was the Library team who bent over backwards to help me in my education.

Q: Have your professors supported you?A: My professors are very supportive and encouraging. I’m formally trained as an Animator and one of my professors went out of her way to write me an amazing letter of recommendation to use for job-hunting. The letter gave me the extra edge and, after weighing a few job offers, I decided to accept a summer position at a high-profile moving picture company in Montréal.

Q: What has been the most fun experience so far in your program?A: I took a Communications class last semester on Professional Sports. Being from Brazil soccer is in my blood and I was able to share some of my cultural background with my classmates. We also went to see a live hockey game, which was a fantastic opportunity to experience one of Canada’s most beloved sports.

Q: How has your experience at OC been?A: It has been great. Okanagan College is the best for international students. There are librarians who helped me a lot and course instructors also. I like their way of teaching.

Q: What are you doing on campus to get involved?A: At OC, there are lot of activities that I have enjoyed. Every week they hold some recreational activities like dog therapy and stress buster activities with games and prizes.

Q: Have you experienced practical learning in your program?A: Some of my courses have practical experience in which we do exercises and learn about human anatomy and physiology, upper and lower body exercises, how to strengthen muscles and maintain your posture. The Human Kinetics program encourages me to do physical activity as part of a daily routine for healthy well-being, which is a good thing.

admission requirementsPROGRAM OFFERINGS AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:Okanagan College offers a wide range of credentials in a variety of disciplines. Many programs and courses transfer to universities in B.C. and beyond. Fall, winter and summer sessions, combined with opportunities for full-time, part-time and distance learning, offer students flexible learning options. B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent (see: Mature Applicants) is required for entry into all degree, diploma, associate degree and most certificate programs. See the Calendar at okanagan.bc.ca/calendar for complete admission and minimum grade requirements for all programs.

ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS:Most programs that require English 12 will also accept English 12 First Peoples, or equivalent Provincial Level Adult Basic Education English. Communications 12 is not acceptable. Applicants without English 12 can complete the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) exam to satisfy the English requirements of most programs at Okanagan College.

MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Most programs that require Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or another science will also accept the equivalent Adult Basic Education (ABE) course. Challenge tests or competency exams may be available for courses. Details can be found in the Calendar. As the B.C. secondary school Mathematics curriculum changes frequently, other courses may be acceptable.

REGULAR APPLICANTS:Regular applicants are considered students who graduated from secondary school (or equivalent) or are currently enrolled in Grade 12.

MATURE APPLICANTS:Mature applicants are at least 19 years of age and have been out of full-time secondary school for at least one year prior to commencement of their program. Grade 12 graduation is not required (unless specified), but the applicant must satisfy all general and program-specific admission requirements.

NOTES:If no percentage grade is indicated for a course that is required for admission to a program, the grade required is 50%. The admission requirements listed on the following pages were current as of the publication date. Please be advised that admission requirements may have changed. All prospective students are advised to see Okanagan College’s online Calendar for detailed admission requirements for every program.

B.C. SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM CHANGES:B.C.’s secondary school curriculum is changing and you may graduate with courses from the new curriculum.
