The Apostles Post 26238 North Highway 59 Wauconda, Illinois FROM THE VICAR’S DESK (M. C. Gillette) My mother is in her 80’s. So far this year, she has spent endless hours in her local wound clinic, trying to heal a nasty (as in, 20- some-odd stitches nasty) gash she got on her leg just before Christmas when she – got out of her car? Yeah, none of us, including her, know how that happened either. She has also suffered acute myocardial infarction, which most likely would have killed anyone who was not, as her cardiologist so aptly put it, such a ‘tough old bird.’ And she has had (more) stents put in her heart. As I write this, it is early March. Not the most auspicious way to start the year. I made the mistake of telling my father that my first knee replacement was scheduled for 14 April, before I told my mother. Normally this wouldn’t have been a problem, because normally my father fails to pass on useful information to my mother. He mostly just shares videos of crazy dog tricks and sick jokes. But as fate would have it, this piece of news got passed along. In a matter of hours, my mother was on the phone, verbally wringing her hands. ‘Oh dear, I hear you’re having your knee replaced on the 11 th of April.’ (So my father got it MOSTLY right….) ‘I wish I’d known that a little sooner, because I was going to go see (family friends) the weekend of the 18 th . But you’ll need lots of help, so I’ll see if we can change our plans. I can come out for a few days before your surgery and stay as long as you need me, probably at least two weeks….’ It didn’t even occur to her that someone who can’t climb stairs worth a hoot (a problematic hip replacement several years ago has done as much harm as it did good), has an oozing, open wound running half-way down one leg (the mandatory blood thinners are keeping it from healing properly), was lingering on the threshold of death’s door only a month ago, has barely recovered from angioplasty, has trouble catching a full breath, and hasn’t ever been able to see well, was probably not the single most qualified care-giver for a grumpy middle- aged woman, even if that grumpy middle-aged woman is her daughter. Fortunately, APRIL 2015 We are a welcoming, compassionate community seeking to grow in Christ and express God’ s love for all, through worship, fellowship, service and prayer.

Wauconda, Illinois

FROM THE VICAR’S DESK (M. C. Gillette)My mother is in her 80’s. So far this year, she has spent endless hours in her local wound clinic, trying to heal a nasty (as in, 20-some-odd stitches nasty) gash she got on her leg just before Christmas when she – got out of her car?

‘Oh dear, I hear you’re having your knee replaced on the 11th of April.’ (So my father got it MOSTLY right….) ‘I wish I’d known that a little sooner, because I was going to go see (family friends) the weekend of the 18th. But you’ll need lots of help, so I’ll see if we can change our plans. I can come out for a few days before your surgery and stay as long as you need me, probably at least two weeks….’

It didn’t even occur to her that someone who can’t climb stairs worth a hoot (a problematic hip replacement several years ago has done as much harm as it did good), has an oozing, open wound running half-way down one leg (the mandatory blood thinners are keeping it from healing properly), was lingering on the threshold of death’s door only a month ago, has barely recovered from angioplasty, has trouble catching a full breath, and hasn’t ever been able to see well, was probably not the single most qualified care-giver for a grumpy middle-aged woman, even if that grumpy middle-aged woman is her daughter. Fortunately, as I plan on going to rehab, I didn’t have to tell her that her presence here would probably simply terrify me as I struggled to keep my mind off the thousands of things that could potentially go wrong. I could just thank her for her concern and her offer, and invite her to come out when the weather was a little better so we could ‘regain our strength together.’

Now, the thought of my mother actually being able to physically assist someone who has just undergone a knee transplant is so absurd it is easy to joke about it. But the reality is that she would have come, and would have – probably literally – died trying to help. People do crazy things when they have servant’s hearts. They do crazy things out of concern for others. They do crazy things for love. Sorta’ like Jesus. He came to assist us with his grace, to tend and nurture and teach and preach and heal. And he – literally – died trying to help. He did crazy things because he had a servant’s heart. He did crazy things out of concern for us and for our salvation. He did crazy things for love. Thanks be to God!

SOME CHURCHY STUFF (M. C. Gillette)In this monthly article, we look at terms and definitions of things you might see or hear around church. Nothing fancy here – these entries are out of the Armentrout/Slocum An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church, sometimes supplemented by me, and sometimes simply copied directly. If something in particular piques your interest, let me know, and we’ll deal with it in more depth.CHURCH DEPLOYMENT OFFICE (CDOO) and CDO PERSONAL PROFILE. The Church

Deployment Office (CDO) is the entity, the employees of which, help move us around. (‘’Us’ being folks – ordained or lay – who get paid for being involved in parish ministry.) At a special meeting of the House of Bishops in 1966 at Wheeling, West Virginia, Presiding Bishop John E. Hines appointed a committee to study the matter of clergy deployment, ‘giving special attention to the placement of clergy in parishes and the authority to remove ineffective clergy.’ (!) By action of the General Convention meeting in Seattle in 1967, a Joint Commission on the Deployment of the Clergy was appointed by the Presiding Bishop to study deployment matters.

This Joint Commission was chaired by the Rt. Rev. John H. Burt, Bishop of Ohio, and is sometimes known as the ‘Burt Commission.’ At the Special General Convention of 1969 at South Bend, Indiana, a resolution was adopted which created the Church Deployment Office. The 1970 General Convention at Houston established the Board for the Deployment of the Clergy. The 1979 General Convention changed the name to the Board for Church Deployment in recognition of the expanded role of lay people in professional ministry. The board is established by canon. (The rules governing the church – this is not a ‘shotgun wedding’ sort of thing.) Its primary duties are to oversee the CDO and to study deployment needs and trends in the Episcopal Church and other Christian bodies (as in institutions – schools and such – not, you know, ‘bodies’….) The CDO office opened in space rented at the Episcopal Church Center on 01 April 1970. It is now part of the Ministry Development Office. The Church Deployment Office is responsible for the form, which inspires all sorts of words I shouldn’t be saying, which must be completed and maintained by anyone who does that ‘professional ministry’ stuff. The form is called the CDO PERSONAL PROFILE. It ‘provides professional information for deployment of Episcopal clergy and lay professionals.’ The profile is intended to present a concise summary of the skills and experience of each person registered in the deployment system. It is used (editorial comment – not necessarily brilliantly well) to match individual skills and talents with opportunities for ministry in the Episcopal Church. The profile includes information concerning the registrant’s education, work address, work history, current annual compensation, ministry specialties and skill/experience, and references. A short personal ministry statement by the registrant is also included, along with the registrant’s responses to a leadership description survey that represents the registrant’s style of ministry. This computerized form goes into a data bank of profiles that is maintained by the Church Deployment Office. When a parish needs a member of the clergy or a lay professional, the parish confers with the diocese concerning the qualifications required. The diocese asks the CDO to search its computerized files for the registrants best matching the parish’s needs. The CDO sends lists of possible candidates with their profiles to the diocesan office, and the diocese submits lists of nominees with their profiles to the parish. I guess it actually happens this way – somewhere – I’ve just never seen it happen this way…. Image: http://www.marclefrancois.net/article-ou-la-grandeur-va-t-elle-se-nicher-116300481.html

CHURCH OF THE ADVENT, BOSTON.http://theadventboston.org/parilife/scenes.htm

All you incense loathers – stay away from Church of the Advent next time you are in Boston. Stay far away. You should also stay far away if your knees don’t support genuflecting. If, however, neither incense nor knees bother you, and you want to see monstrances and humeral veils and the backs of fabulous vestments as clergy celebrate the Eucharist facing away from you, you should go. I have preached there – but I couldn’t celebrate there. I mean, it’s not that they’d forbid me – at least the first time – but kneeling on marble just isn’t my thing these days. All kidding aside, however, no matter what you think about the theology behind the way they worship at ‘Advent,’ this formal, ‘high’ liturgy is really something you should experience at least once. Church of the Advent parish was founded by lay people in 1844 and has long been one of the leading Anglo-catholic parishes in the American Church. Its strong adherence to the principles of the Oxford Movement (aka the ‘Catholic Revival’ of the Church of England) and the ritualist movement often has put it at odds with other Episcopalians. Innovative practices concerning liturgy and parish governance led to conflict with the Bishop of Massachusetts, Manton Eastburn (1843-1872). He refused to make a visitation to the parish. This refusal precipitated passage of a canon at the 1856 General Convention requiring bishops to visit each parish in their jurisdictions at least once every three years.
