Congratulations to the Graduates
Graduates,
Congratulations on your transition from South Central College student to graduate.
The 2019 - 20 academic year was filled with tremendous successes, made all the more remarkable by the challenges we have all faced. The year 2020 will go down in the history books as a defining time filled with significant challenges. At the same time, it will also represent a period when we discovered our ability to persevere when faced with obstacles we never imagined would be put in front of us.
Your resilience, drive, and determination have gotten you to this point. And these same traits will drive your success as you start your career, continue on with your education, or both.
Learning is lifelong and we at South Central College are committed to helping you continue to further your education, whether it be on the job or in the classroom.
Supporting your success will remain our primary goal. This effort has been strengthened through our participation in Achieving the Dream, a national network of colleges dedicated to student success. As an Achieving the Dream college, South Central College’s faculty, staff and administrators have and will continue to work on a number of ambitious initiatives with the ultimate goal of making a difference, as we say it, “Just One More” student at a time.
Your graduation is the realization of this dream, and all of us at South Central College could not be prouder of you!
Congratulations again on this achievement and the many successes that await you in the future.
With much admiration,
Dr. Annette Parker
President

Commencement Messages
Tim WalzGovernor of Minnesota
Tim Walz is Minnesota’s 41st Governor. His career has been defined by public service, from serving our country in the military to serving our students as a high-school teacher and football coach to serving our state in Congress.
Born in a small town in rural Nebraska, Tim’s parents instilled in him the values that guide his commitment to common good and selfless service. Soon after his high school graduation, Tim enlisted in the Army National Guard. Tim attended Chadron State College, where he graduated with a social science degree in 1989. Harvard
University offered Tim an opportunity to gain a new perspective on global education by teaching in the People’s Republic of China from 1989-90, where he joined one of the first government-approved groups of American teachers to work in Chinese high schools. Upon his return from China to Nebraska, Tim served full time in the Army National Guard, and accepted a teaching and coaching position. More importantly, he met his wife, Gwen Whipple, who was teaching at the same school.
Tim and Gwen Walz moved to Mankato in 1996, where they began working at Mankato West High School. In addition to teaching social studies, Tim helped coach the Mankato West football team that won the school’s first state championship. After 24 years in the Army National Guard, Command Sergeant Major Walz retired from the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion in 2005.
Tim won his first election to the United States House of Representatives in 2006, and was re-elected for another 5 terms serving Minnesota’s First Congressional District. In addition to his work on the Farm Bill, the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System, Minnesota Highway 14, and the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston (MN), Tim introduced the STOCK Act, a bill that sought to limit congressional insider trading. On March 22, 2012, the STOCK Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate.
After years of living in Mankato, Tim and Gwen moved to St. Paul with their two children, Hope and Gus, and their rescue pets, Scout and Afton.

The gowns, hoods, and caps that are worn in the processional stem from centuries of academic tradition. Not only do they lend color and dignity to this occasion, they also serve to identify the wearers by indicating their field of specialty and by marking their level of achievement.
Gowns are traditionally black with straight, open sleeves for associate or bachelor’s degrees while a closed sleeve with a slit denotes a master’s degree. Those who have a doctorate degree are recognized by the velvet trimmings on the front facings of the gown and by the crossbars on the sleeves.
A hood or cowl is worn by all graduates who have earned master's degree or higher. The length will vary with the level of academic achievement, with longer hoods representing higher degree awards. The colors and style on the outer portion represent the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The color and style of the lining indicates the area of study.
Caps are traditionally black mortarboards with a colorful tassel. South Central College has chosen antique gold tassels for all of our areas of study. Those who have earned a doctoral degree may wear a tam with a gold tassel.

South Central College introduces the commencement exercises with a virtual academic procession. The procession is lead by the President and Administrative team. The Outstanding Faculty Member will carry a mace. The mace is a symbol for two critical matters; it stands for the freedom to seek the truth and to teach it and for the authority of the college. This authority is best described by two Latin terms: magisterium and auctoritas. Under the first term, magisterium, is control of equipment and building and grounds, as well as the behavior of members and visitors – ensuring order and liberty. Under the second term, auctoritas, is a defense of liberty to do research, to study, to publish, and to learn. The mace makes the statement that South Central College must protect and foster these educational values and ideals. Our mace was handcrafted by President Emeritus Keith Stove, who served South Central College from 1999-2013.
The President wears a medallion around the neck. The medallion is an age old tradition representing the chain of office in educational institutions. Each chain of the medallion is as unique as the institution it represents South Central College’s medallion is made from Vetter Stone, with a chain featuring the names of South Central College’s leadership from the institution’s inception.

25 COMMENCEMENT 2020
North Mankato Campus
Mankato Vocational School was founded in 1946 as the first public post-secondary vocational-technical school in Minnesota and was governed by the Mankato School District. The Kline Garage, in downtown Mankato, became the site for the vocational school, which offered programs in electrical careers, machine tool, and auto mechanics. In 1950, classes moved into the new Mankato Vocational School building, sharing a campus with the new Mankato High School. In fall 1968, the institution’s current campus in North Mankato opened its doors with a new name: Mankato Area Vocational Technical Institute. In 1984 the name was abbreviated to Mankato Technical Institute.
To address needs of the college brought on by enrollment growth, the Minnesota State Board of Education approved a $6 million construction project, which was started 1988-1989. The 100,000 sq. ft. addition (added to the original 200,000 sq. ft. building) was completed in 1989. At the same time, the mission changed to a degree granting technical college (Associate of Applied Science), resulting in an institutional name change: Mankato Technical College.
A merger joined Mankato Technical College with Albert Lea Technical College in order to create the new Albert Lea-Mankato Technical College in July of 1992, with the new institution governed by a regional board.
Faribault Campus
Faribault Area Vocational Technical Institute received its official designation in July 1964, based on the Faribault School District’s long history of providing technical education. In the 1940’s, one of Minnesota’s first occupational programs in practical nursing was started in partnership with the hospital. The Minnesota State Board of Education approved a $2 million construction project during the 1987 school year. As Faribault Technical Institute, the college was governed by the school district until 1992. In that year, Faribault Technical Institute merged with technical colleges in Austin and Rochester to form the joint vocational district named Minnesota Riverland Technical College, a degree-granting institution.
Campuses Joined Together
In 1995, the Faribault campus and North Mankato campus became part of the new legislatively created Minnesota State system of colleges and universities. The Mankato campus was realigned with the Faribault campus, and the college became South Central Technical College to depict the larger region of south central Minnesota.
In 2005, the Minnesota State system Board of Trustees approved South Central Technical College’s request to expand its mission and provide an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences in addition to its technical degrees. In so doing, the institution become a comprehensive community and technical college, and the name was changed to South Central College.
