2021 COMMENCEMENT MESSAGE

Welcome graduates, family members and friends to this very important and pivotal ceremony. Today, we recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our students, as well as the contributions and support of their loved ones.

At Shoreline, we are committed to being recognized for inclusive excellence in teaching and learning, student success, and community engagement. Only through the persistent dedication displayed by our students, along with the care and support of their loved ones, can this vision be fulfilled. PHI THETA KAPPA Graduates wearing gold stoles over their gowns are members of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for community

colleges, giving recognition to students with excellent scholarship and character. A grade point average of 3.5 and a minimum of 12 transferable credit hours at Shoreline Community College are requirements for membership. The four hallmarks of the society are scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. There are more than 1,100 chapters in all 50 states and abroad, with a cumulative

membership exceeding 1,200,000.

DECA Graduates wearing the blue Collegiate DECA commencement stoles are recognized as emerging leaders for their community service,

leadership achievement, and earning finalist honors in regional and international Collegiate DECA competition.

VETERAN STUDENTS Graduates wearing entwined cords of red, white and blue over their gowns are Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves or veterans of the United States Armed Services, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The cords are meant to recognize and

honor Shoreline’s community of student veterans and thank them for their service to our country.

ACA DEMIC R EGA LI A

The colorful costumes worn by the platform guests and faculty are called academic regalia. The use of caps, gowns and hoods in academia dates from medieval times. The overall appearance of the regalia changes as the wearer attains advanced degrees. The standard “mortar- board” style cap is uniform through all degrees with the tassel being black or the color of the wearer’s discipline. Faculty holding the doctorate degree may wear a velvet tam-o-shanter style cap instead of the “mortar-board” but in each case the tassel is shorter and gold. Bachelor’s degree holders wear a simple gown, closed at the front, with pointed sleeves. The master’s gown, worn open or closed, has sleeves that end in a curved pouch with an opening to free the wearer’s hands. The doctorate gown, which also may be worn open or closed, has large, puffy sleeves each with three horizontal velvet bars. The gown is faced with velvet around the neck and down the front. The velvet is either black or the color of the wearer’s discipline. The hood, worn hanging down the back, increases from 36 inches long in the bachelor’s to 48 inches long in the doctorate. The inside satin lining, often worn turned out, is in the colors of the wearer’s university. The velvet outside border of the hood is in the color of the wearer’s discipline. The disciplines represented at Shoreline Community College and their colors are listed below:
