Section A: Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality

enhancement (attach separate sheet if required).

To organize an educational visit to Science Exhibition, Science Centre and Research and Development

Centers/ Departments.

To arrange lectures on AIDS awareness under the banner of Women Development Cell.

To organize a study tour to Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Panvel, Navi Mumbai.

Arrangement of seminars / conferences /workshops, to discuss and deliberate on current issues and

thereby enhance the quality of teaching learning process.

To conduct theme based co-curricular, extra-curricular, outreach activities through NSS/DACEE/WDC

and other such units.

To augment the infrastructural facilities in tune with introduction of new courses and natural growth.

To arrange lectures by experts to guide and encourage the faculty for research activities and to help them

in qualifying NET/SET examinations.

To encourage faculty members to update themselves about technological developments in the teaching

learning process, student centric teaching methods.

To establish staff academy for sharing knowledge and interdisciplinary development.

To commence post graduate course for science students.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution

The college organised an educational visit to Science Expo, 2008 at Nehru Science Centre on 14/01/2008

and a visit to Guru Nanak Institute Of Research and Development, Matunga, on 05/04/2008.

The Departments of Physics and Chemistry organized a study tour to Indian Institute of Geomagnetism at

Panvel on 22/08/2007.

A study tour was jointly organized by the Departments of Botany and Srishti Nature Club to Baptist

Garden (Byculla) for botanical excursion on 24 Dec 2007.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG)

Commenced M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry) course during this academic year.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction

The college organised an educational visit to Science Expo 2008 at Nehru Science Centre on 14/01/2008

and a visit to Guru Nanak Institute Of Research and Development on 05/04/2008.

Physics and Chemistry Departments organized a study tour to Indian Institute of Geomagnetism at

Panvel on 22/08/2007.

A study tour was jointly organised by the Dept. of Botany and Srishti Nature Club to Baptist Garden

(Byculla) for botanical excursion on 24 Dec 2007.

Chemistry Department organized an Intercollegiate activity ANALYSER.

To educate the students about the content of the course, its practical application, career and employment

opportunities, an orientation programme for first year B.Sc.students was organised on 21st July 2007. Dr.

Avinash Patil (H.O.D. of Herbal Sciences, Birla College), Shri S.R. Patil (H.O.D. of Physics,

K.J.Somaiya College), Dr. P.S.Chaudhary (H.O.D. of Chemistry, Birla College) guided the students.

In addition to the regular classroom activities, a picnic trip to Tikujini Wadi was organised on 26th

December, 2007.

Guidance lectures in various subjects for T.Y.B.Sc./B.A./B.Com students were conducted to help them

excel in their University Examination. Please refer ANNEXURE -A

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started

5. Examination reforms implemented

Examinations are conducted on behalf of the University of Mumbai as per the rules and regulations of

University of Mumbai.

In addition to the University exams like Term Exam and ATKT exam, college conducts a preliminary

examination for the final year students, along the lines of the university pattern, about one month before the

University examination. The students are then given feedback and general guidelines to better their performance.

Some departments conduct periodic tests in their respective subjects for each class in the form of open

book test, test series, objective test etc. to improve the general performance.

Question bank for Viva-voce of practical examination was provided to students.

Almost in all the subjects of the Science and for the subjects of Communication Skill in English and

Business Communication, class room seminars are conducted.

Examination time-table for first year and second year Term End Examinations are arranged in such a

manner that students can get one day preparation leave for each paper.

Ms. Smita S. Patil presented paper “Studies on Growth and Characterization of KDP-ADP mixed

crystals” in the national conference on Physics of Semiconductor devices and smart materials organized

by Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College, Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Prof. Mrs. Shubhada Deshpande, a member of the Women Development Cell presented a paper on “

Globalization and Women” in the national seminar organized by the Women Development Cell of the

University of Mumbai.

18. Community services

Following activities are conducted by Srishti Nature Club.

Green Day – celebrated on 19/12/2007. Conducted Poster Painting Competition for students on the topic

of their choice.

Street Play – conducted Street Play on GLOBAL WARMING in and around areas of Vikas

College. The same were performed on 26th Jan 2008 (Republic Day) and at R-Mall (Mulund).

Nature trek to manmade Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi, Mumbai, was arranged by Srishti

(Nature Club), on 24/12/2007.

The N.S.S. Unit of the college offered following community services. Please refer ANNEXURE - E

One hundred twenty five (125) books costing Rs. 137891/- were purchased for M. Sc. students.

LIBRARY READING HALL: Library reading hall is kept open on all Holidays and Sundays to facilitate

studies during the examination period. Reference books, question papers, syllabi are issued against their

identity cards. To cope up with the research need of the PG students, one abstracting journal is added to the

already existing journals.

Research Journal: Indian Science Abstract: Indian Science Abstracts (ISA) is a semi – monthly abstracting

periodical was started by INSDOC (Indian National Science Documentation Centre) in January, 1965. 57

periodicals are covered under this semi-monthly journal.

Arthbodh Patrika : This periodical was added this year for the students from the Dept. of Economics

studying in the regional language.

23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback

For all the courses feedback is collected.

Assessment of teachers performance is made in all courses. The shortcomings if any are reported to

the concern teacher. Principal and Head of Department provides necessary guidelines for

improvement in performance. The implementation of suggested improvement is reviewed by the

Principal in the informal meetings with the class representative and Head of the Department.

24. Unit cost of education

Unit cost of education including salary = Rs. 12601.06 per student.

Unit cost of education excluding salary = Rs. 5612.38 per student.

25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of

certificates

No specific software is installed for performing these functions; however they are performed with the

help of computers.

26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities

Addition to the Furniture and Fixture – An expenditure of Rs.125387/-

Additional provision of Rs.224224/- has been made towards the computer facilities.

Additional equipments worth Rs.102514/- were purchased for laboratories.

28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers, non-teaching staff and students

Almost all the teachers are computer savvy and have their own desktop/laptop computers or if at all they

require any guidance, it is provided by the teachers in the Dept. of Information Technology.

Prof. Mrs. Seema Rahul conducts computer and internet training for our non-teaching staff members.

Average age of the non-teaching administrative staff is around 35years and they are computer literate.

We offer B.Sc and M.Sc.courses in the subject of Information Technology. Similarly, at S.Y.B.Com and

at T.Y.B.Com we offer computer as optional subject.

The students in the Science section are encouraged to present their in-house projects through power point

presentation.

They are encouraged to use internet by prescribing addresses of the websites for paper presentations and

seminars in the classroom.

The teachers provide their e-mail ids to the students so that an online academic interaction becomes

possible.

The library provides guidance for MSCIT examination.

Internet facilities are provided in the computer laboratory, library, administrative office and in the U.G.C.

Resource center. Teaching and non-teaching staff can access the internet facilities at all said places however

access to internet facilities for students is allowed at computer laboratories and in library only.

29. Financial aid to students

a) Facility of paying fees in easy installments is provided to the needy students.

b) Book bank scheme is made available to the underprivileged students.

c) All the students are insured for accident under group insurance by United Insurance.

d) In the Dept. of Information Technology, selected students are provided with free advanced training

during vacation.

30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association

Prof. C. G. Deogaonkar, Sr.lecturer working with the college from the day of inception of the college, is

the office bearer of the Alumni Association. He has reserved last Saturday of every month for the alumni

members.

Prof. Milind Paradkar, a faculty from the Science section, has formed a yahoo group of alumni members.

The faculty from the Dept. of I.T. are in touch with the alumni on Facebook.

Our alumni acts as the coach for sports and extracurricular activities. Some alumni regularly attend the

N.S.S. camp as well as blood donation programme arranged by the N.S.S. unit of our college.

31. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association

We do not have any formal Parent-Teacher Association, however, on the following occasions teachers

meet the parents.

I. Felicitation of meritorious students along with their parents.

II. Unfair means enquiry committee meetings.

III. Meeting with the parents of defaulters.

IV. Blood donation camp and other such social activities.

V. Meeting with the parents of the N.S.S. students.

VI. In certain circumstances, parents are invited for discussion or counseling in order to find solutions

for problems faced by individual students.

In the meeting teachers provide feedback to parents about the performance of the wards. Similarly a

parent also provides very useful information about their wards, their family background…etc. which is

very useful in making teaching more students centric. Parents’ supportive approach helps us to implement

disciplinary measures, attendance policies in positive manner. Their suggestions are useful while

introducing a new course and new subjects in the college.

The college Annual Sports were conducted on 3rd, 4th and 5th January 2008 which was followed by the

Prize Distribution.

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling unit

The Women Development Cell had organized a lecture by Prof. Panikkar on Career Opportunities for

Girl Students on 13/01/2007

The WDC organizes sessions on topics like health and hygiene, career opportunities for women,

social security of the women etc.

The students are offered counseling in their personal, psychological and academics related problems by

the faculty members.

37. Placement services provided to students

A campus interview was conducted by Apex Laboratories Limited. Many students were shortlisted by the

company and training program for them was conducted in their laboratories.

On 17/10/07 and on 17/01/2008 campus interviews were conducted. The companies invited were Trinity,

R-Tech., State International and Eureka Forbes. Deserving students were shortlisted by the companies.

38. Development programmes for non-teaching staff

The faculties from the Dept. of Information Technology organize computer training programmes for non

teaching staff wherein they are guided on how to use computer, internet facilities in their day to day

activities.

Prof.Mrs.Shubhada Deshpande, a faculty from the Dept. of English conducts training programmes for

non teaching staff wherein they are guided about the required skills for writing and speaking correct and

good English.

Mr. Damodar Mangesh Tivarekar, Head Clerk of the college participated in one day workshop for the

Registrar/Superintendent/ Accountant/ Head Clerk / Senior Administrative Staff of Colleges affiliated to

the University of Mumbai conducted by Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce on 5th June 2007.

Mr. Patil Hari Yashwant participated in a workshop on Co-Curricular Activities in Colleges organised by

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini , Mumbai on 31st August 2007.

Mr. Patil Hari Yashwant, library attendant, participated in a one day state level seminar on “Modern

Technology and the Use of Internet in College Libraries organized by N.G.Acharya & D.K.Marathe

College, Mumbai on 12th January 2008.

Mr. Patil Hari Yashwant, library attendant, completed the diploma course in Civil and Architectural

Draughtsman from Academy of Technicians in March 2008.

39. Healthy practices of the institution

To develop patriotism among the students, following activities are conducted.

The Independence Day and the Republic Day are celebrated in the college. The attendance is

made compulsory on these days.

Every day before the first lecture the National Song is played.

The birth and death anniversaries of the national leaders are celebrated in the college.

Eminent personalities are invited to deliver lectures.

A periodic wall paper magazine is published by the students under the guidance of the teachers.

The News Reading and Poetry Reading competition was conducted by the Cultural Association and the

Literary Association on 11th December 2007.

To celebrate the Teachers’ Day, 5th Sept 2007,the college arranged an activity “Samuhagaan Spardha”.

Teachers from different sections of the institute participated in patriotic song singing competition.

The college has a center for the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extention of the

University of Mumbai. Two vocational projects namely, Information technology project and Annapurna

Yojana Project, were offered to the students. At the initial stage twenty students registered for

Information Tecnology project and four students registered for Annapurna yojna project.

ANNEXURE - E

The N.S.S. Unit of the college offered following community services.

1) Tree Plantation: On 11th August 2007, the NSS unit of the college had undertaken the programme of

tree plantation in the college campus. 200 saplings were planted by a group of 174 NSS volunteers.

2) Cleanliness Drive: The programme of Cleanliness Drive in the college was undertaken from 1st

September to 4th September 2007. A group of NSS volunteers presented a street play on “Need and

Importance of Keeping College Campus Clean” to create awareness about the need and importance of

cleanliness among the college students.(178 volunteers)

3) Gandhi Jayanti : On 2nd October 2007, Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated. On this occasion, the NSS Unit

had conducted an essay competition. Almost 175students participated in the competition.

4) Food and Drug Adulteration: In collaboration with FDA, Maharashtra state, a programme was

organized by the unit on 16th December 2007. In this program, a live demonstration of methods adopted

for adulteration of food and drugs were shown by the members of FDA.

5) Hiroshima Peace Rally: Every year, the University of Mumbai organizes a Peace Rally from Azad

Maidan to Hutatma Chowk on 6th August, 2007. This year also our NSS unit was invited by the

University to participate in this rally. Over 185 NSS volunteers actively participated in this rally.

6) Ganesh Immersion Traffic control Duty: Every year, the NSS volunteers help the police in controlling

traffic for 3 days of Ganesh immersion . (175 volunteers)

ANNEXURE- F

Health Services:

Pulse Polio immunization: This is a project carried out for the whole year, as per as the schedule given by

Municipal Corporation. During the year the project was carried on 8th and 9th September 2007, 5th and 6th

January 2008, and 9th and 10th February 2008. 170 volunteers participated in this project.

Hepatitis-B Vaccination Camp: On 21st September 2007, 24th November 2007 and on 9th February 2008, the

NSS unit had organized Hepatitis-B vaccination camps. Total about 1000 members were benefited by this

vaccination. 148 volunteers actively participated in this activity.

Vyasan Mukti: Vyasan Mukti programme was organised on 18th July 2007. It was to create awareness about

the ill effects of consumption of tobacco, gutka chewing, smoking etc.

Sex Education: A lecture on Sex Education by Dr. Madhavi Mohite was organized by the unit on7th

Sep.,2007.

Blood Donation Drive: This year also the unit organized blood donation drive on the death anniversary of late

Dr. Datta Samant ,i.e., on 16th January.This year 308 units of blood were successfully collected by the NSS

unit. Red Cross Blood Bank was invited for the blood collection.
