MISSIONVICTORY GARDEN INITIATIVE EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES TO GROW FOOD, REAWAKENING OUR INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP TO HUMAN AND FOOD ECOLOGY; ADVANCING A RESILIENT FOOD CULTURE: FROM SOIL, TO SEED, TO PLATE, TO SOIL. WHEN EVERYONE IS A FARMER, WE WILL HAVE A SOCIALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY JUST FOOD SYSTEM.

VISIONENVISION OUR POST-INDUSTRIAL WORLD TRANSFORMED TO AN ABUNDANT AND SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM THROUGH THE REINTRODUCTION OF FOOD GROWING INTO OUR URBAN ECOLOGY. WHEN FRUIT TREES FILL OUR PARKS, AND NUT TREES ARE HARVESTED BY OUR NEIGHBORS, WHEN FOOD PANTRIES HOUSE VEGETABLE GARDENS AND SCHOOL CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN GROWING THEIR LUNCHES, WE WILL HAVE A SECURE, SOVEREIGN, SOCIALLY JUST AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM.

FOUNDING TRUTHVICTORY GARDEN INITIATIVE BELIEVES THAT EVERY PERSON, IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD, CAN CONNECT TO THEIR FOOD SOURCE THROUGH THE ACT OF GROWING IT. THIS ACT REMINDS US THAT WE ARE OF THE EARTH, THAT WE CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THE EARTH; THAT OUR NEEDS ARE MET, NOT BY THE ECONOMY, BUT BY THE EARTH. GROWING FOOD WILL RE-INTEGRATE US WITH DEEP ECOLOGY, GUIDING OUR CULTURE TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE, ABUNDANT FUTURE, FREED FROM FINANCIAL INEQUALITIES.

INTRO LETTERS

Dear supporters, The other day, I gave a tour of Concordia Gardens, our 1.5-acre community farm and garden in the Harambee neighborhood. As we walked through, we picked peas and pulled carrots and ate them on the spot. So crunchy and sweet. So accessible. So chock-full of nutrients. As food grew all around us, ripe to perfection as it drank the sun and waited to be enjoyed, it was hard to deny the value of it all. Never, in all my years of transforming this piece of wasted land into space that grows food with and for the community, has anyone said to me, “I don’t get it” or “Why do we care?”

There is a reason for this. The reason is simple: Being surrounded by food growing in the earth is one of the most timeless and ubiquitous human experiences. Intuitively people know that there is something deeply whole about the carrot that comes from the rich soil and directly into our bodies. The experience of eating something from the earth reminds us of what we are made of and gives a moment of wholeness in a world that otherwise compartmentalizes food and land and people into commodity crops. This land, which grows food for the immediate community, reminds us that there is indeed a different way to look at the world. For this reason, and so many more, Victory Garden Initiative dreams big. Our mission is targeted toward creating change from the ground up. And our successes of the past year are a manifestation of the simple power of our work. In 2013 we accomplished more than we set out to do, with fewer resources than we expected to use, as you will read in Becky’s letter and in the following pages. Please enjoy this annual report. Consider the stories and measures of accomplishment a Big, Fat THANK YOU for believing in and supporting our mission. With Regard,Gretchen

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Dear friends,

My name is Becky Grandone, and I am proud to be president of VGI's Board of Directors. Having watched as Gretchen founded Victory Garden Initiative, brought together our growing crop of volunteers to make a network of backyard gardens, and helped people grow food all over the city since 2009, I was honored to become the Board President this year. When I first met Gretchen, I had already begun to learn about the failures of our commercial food system. I was concerned about the waste, chemicals and environmental impact of the

food we ate. My journey had begun: I was growing some food, making more of my own and localizing what I ate, but Gretchen brought it to a whole new, important level. In 2009 I couldn't even begin to imagine the things that would be accomplished through VGI! This year, we put in 500 Blitz gardens, planted 5 Fruity Nutty orchards, trained 20 urban permaculturist and cultivated 14 food leaders. We also hired our first staff members, Jazz and Alysse, and excitedly began to imagine what would happen if Milwaukee took all its foreclosed property and empty lots and encouraged people—budding urban farmers—to grow more food in the city. We hit major milestones, promoted our mission further across Wisconsin and continued to dream up amazing possibilities for our future.

Although Victory Garden Initiative completed its 5th Annual Blitz in 2013, I have been volunteering for four, and Gretchen has been dreaming about this for even more, 2013 became a new first for VGI. We officially gained status as an independent nonprofit organization! After spending many years ensuring that VGI was something that people in Milwaukee wanted to grow with, we had confidence that 2013 was the time. We had the strong community and strong message we needed—and we'd certainly keep growing in the years to come. We are so happy to be where we are now, growing food and community with you.

All my best,Becky

SERVICES

Lettuce Help You Grow Food! Doubling as a source of revenue and program implementation, VGI offers a varied range of garden consultations and educational services, ranging from garden construction to permaculture consultation to customized classes. For a reasonable fee, our experts install gardens at homes, teach classes at local businesses, consult on composting techniques, and more. Not only do these services provide VGI with a sustainable source of funding, they provide clients with individualized advice and tools to grow nutritious, free food in their own yards.

VGI BY THE NUMBERS

Since the creation of Victory Garden Initiative in 2009, we have installed 1500 gardens, planted 1000 trees and five orchards, trained 40 community Food Leaders, launched a dozen community gardens and a 1.5-acre farm, and taught hundreds of children and adults to grow food. In four years, we have certified 20 urban permaculturists and had hundreds of regular attendees at our Edible Gardening classes. Our three staff, half dozen interns, over 300 volunteers, and limited budget accomplish the quantity and quality of work that an organization twice our size might accomplish.

EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP CULTIVATION

Concordia Gardens. Concordia Gardens is our tangible manifestation of Victory Garden Initiative’s mission. Located in Milwaukee's Harambee neighborhood, it sits on a 1.5-acre property dedicated to a range of urban agriculture projects: a community garden, home to annual crops, an emerging food forest, an edible classroom, event space, and a community compost site. In 2013, through a generous grant from Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, we spent much of our summer installing a 2500-gallon rainwater cistern that we will use to water our community gardens and future crops. We planted the beginnings of an urban orchard, held classes, hosted potlucks, and continued to turn the space from a wasteland of trash, compacted earth, and storm water runoff to a vibrant food-producing gem in the heart of a neighborhood in need of fresh, wholesome food.

ACTIVITY REPORT

Edible Gardening for Sustainability. Our class series, attended by community members, Food Leaders, and gardeners seasoned and new, emphasizes ecologically based gardening. Our education staff in 2013 ranged from founding executive director Gretchen Mead to a life-long rural and urban farmer, Master Gardener, permaculture instructor, construction business owner, tree expert and more. Our “EGS” series educated over 100 students using methods to produce lots of produce in your yard without the use of industrial fertilizers and pesticides. We met on Saturday mornings approximately once a month from March through November to discuss seasonally appropriate topics such as starting seeds, building healthy soil, and garden design.  Practices covered in this course were based on HYPERLINK "http://victorygardeninitiative.org/urbanpermaculturepage" permacultural principles and design. Broader topics addressed included biodiversity and food security. VGI classes are very accessible and novice gardeners are most welcome.

Food Leader Certificate Program. Our Food Leader Certificate program is a yearlong leadership institute that teaches emerging food leaders to grow their own food, learn about the food system, and lead food projects in their communities. The program includes three retreats focused on leadership and community organizing, food systems, and community-based food projects; all of the Edible Garden for Sustainability series; support on an independent or group project; learning and reading materials; and a built-in community for making lasting change in our city and beyond. Food Leaders who complete the full program graduate with a formal certificate.

Kid and Family Club. Victory Garden Initiative believes that when a child grows a tomato, that child will eat a tomato—and love it. Our Kid and Family Club

was created to plant the seed of food knowledge in our community’s youth, educating them about food systems, gardening, teamwork, and care for the earth. In 2013, we worked directly with schools and community centers to supplement classroom curriculum with our experiential food-based activity sessions, both inside and at Concordia Gardens. In 2014, we will strengthen existing partnerships and gain new ones, working with Holton Youth and Family Center, Escuela Fratney, and Neighborhood House of Milwaukee.

Permaculture Certification Program. This year marked our inaugural Permaculture Certification Program, during which we educated 20 budding permaculturists in the art and science of mimicking Earth’s ecosystems in their own homes, yards, and communities. We hosted classes at Concordia Gardens and other community locations to provide a real, replicable experience with creating systems that exemplify permaculture’s principles: Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share. Graduates left with a certificate and the resources needed to begin cultivating their own urban homesteads.

EVENTS

Fruity Nutty Campaign: Fruity Nutty 5 Contest & Fruity Nutty Affair. The Fruity Nutty Campaign promotes the creation of edible food forests throughout Milwaukee by planting fruit and nut trees on public and private lands throughout the city. In 2013, we hosted our first annual Fruity Nutty 5 Contest, awarding five orchards of 30 fruit- and nut-producing plants each to Riverwest, Walker's Point, DMZ Community Garden, 45th Street, and Friends of Tippecanoe Park. Through the contest, we directly plant a future we wish to exist within: one with perennials filling our parks (just like Tippecanoe!), neighbors united around fruit trees for generations to come, and children growing up growing food. By planting trees, we protect our environment, improve public health, and strengthen our communities, while feeding people.

We raise the funds and excitement for these orchards at the Fruity Nutty Affair, held every February.

The Great Milwaukee Victory Garden Blitz. Each spring, our original initiative returns: The Great Milwaukee Victory Garden Blitz. The Blitz provides affordable raised garden beds for residents in Greater Milwaukee while uniting hundreds of volunteers for an inspiring day of community building.

The Victory Garden Blitz serves as a major fundraising event for the organization. For a reasonable fee, VGI constructs a garden bed filled with high-quality organic soil in each participant’s yard, church, school, or wherever an individual or group wants to garden. And for those who cannot meet the expense, VGI offers raised beds on a sliding scale, offset by individual donations, grants and community partnerships specifically directed at providing gardens to help people grow more food. In 2013, approximately half of the gardens were provided at reduced rates. Over 250 volunteers installed 503 gardens in two weeks.

By constructing garden beds in the yards of participants, VGI breaks down the many barriers that separate consumers from their food source, changing food deserts into urban farms. Further, through our Garden Mentor Program, we link volunteers who are experienced in gardening with Blitz garden recipients to provide advice and support through their first growing season.
