VIATOR is published quarterly by the Clerics of St. Viator, the Viatorians, for friends, families, parishioners and alumni of Viatorian apostolates.
The Clerics of St. Viator are religious priests and brothers sent by the Catholic Church to teach the Faith and proclaim Jesus Christ as Gospel. In parishes, schools, and a variety of other ministries Viatorians work with Christian communities to live, deepen and celebrate their faith.
Our legal title is: Clerics of St. Viator.
From The Provincial's Perspective ____ _ Dear Partners in Faith,
Greetings from the Viatorians. This is the seventh edition of our Quarterly Newsletter of the Viatorians. Perhaps the extensive pictures from our 1996 Provincial Assembly have already caught your attention. Our assembly takes place every August when we invite all of the Viatorians back to the Province Center here in Arlington Heights for a few days of meetings, reunion and jubilee celebrations - there is a picture of the Jubilarians on page 4. This year we invited some of the lay leaders from our parishes and schools to join us. Our theme was "Collaboration in Ministry" and we spent two days listening and discussing
how we might better serve the People of God by sharing our ministry. Many of the Viatorians and lay leaders who attended the Assembly commented that it was a profitable and enjoyable two days and provided the opportunity for us to dialogue together on the future of our shared ministry.
I know that many of you have received our Case Statement. Some of you have sent contributions for our work and several of you have asked, "Father, did you forget the envelope?" No, we did not forget the envelope. Twice a year we plan to have an appeal which will begin in the fall of this year. For now, we simply ask that you read and reflect on our Case Statement - it tells our story and suggests ways in which you can participate in our ministry. To those of you who have sent contributions, many thanks from all of us in the Viatorians! For everyone, res t assured the envelope is on the way!
As I write this letter, I can hear the noise from football and soccer practice from our neighbor to the north, St. Viator High School. With the start of a new school year, it is a sign that summer has come to an end. I hope that the summer months have been good to you and your family. Please know that you remain in the prayers of all the members of our Viatorian community.
Sincerely,
~ ;11. t,QM., csv

Keeping in touch ____ _
Father Gene Bertrand, C.S.V., Commander, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, has retired after 25 years. Commander Bertrand's service in the navy took him all over the world. Postings ranged from Korea, Okinawa, Japan, Guam and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to Italy, Washington D.C., San Diego, California and most recently Gulfport, Mississippi. As a navy chaplain, Father Bertrand's responsibilities included much of what you might expect in any parish - celebrating Mass, providing programs for youth and young adults, sacramental preparation classes, visiting families and visiting the sick. But as a navy chaplain, sometimes his ministry took place on an aircraft carrier or dock-side.
An impressive retirement ceremony
was conducted in early September this year, with Viatorian Provincial Fr. Robert Egan, C.S.V. participating, along with several navy and other U.S. armed forces colleagues. The final "piping ashore" ceremony signified Father Bertrand's completion of his naval duties.
Before joining the navy, Gene spent some time in parish ministry and Catholic secondary education. He served in his native Springfield as associate pastor of St. Joseph Church in 1962. He next went to Las Vegas to serve on the faculty of Bishop Gorman High School for eight years. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Griffin High School (now Sacred Heart Griffin) and returned to Springfield. Although Father Bertrand is retiring from the navy, he is not retiring from active ministry. Gene will now serve as a hospital chaplain at the VA Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Father Bertrand can be reached at 1003 N. Tyler Street, Little Rock, AK, 72205; phone 501 I 663-8632. •
