This building was torn down shortly after opening. Settling of the landfill it was built on caused structural problems. Jaycees Park now occupies the site of the original location of St. Viator.

St. Viator Catholic Community Parish Building History Page 3

The following article is on file in the Viatorian archives and is reprinted from the Tuesday, December 27, 1955 edition of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper.

When construction of St. Viator’s Catholic Church was begun at St. Louis and Eastern in late October, Christmas Eve and the traditional midnight mass were ambitiously set as completion goal.

But on Christmas Eve that 70-day building miracle came about, and the church’s first dedicated use was as a crib for the infant Jesus.

The first high mass celebrated by the Rev. Fr. R. A. Crowley and featuring a Gregorian choir of priests and brothers of Gorman high school faculty was broadcast; a capacity number of parishioners participated in the memorable service.

The new church follows the contemporary trend of simplification in interior design and architecture; its main characteristic is the wide gothic arch beam.

The structure went up on six acres purchased by the church from the city with an additional parish school and convent house in mind.

The church building includes a parish activities center, while the rectory is a separate building.

East Charleston parishioners who will pay for the church in approaching years, have attended services in several temporary building during the past year while waiting for the new building.

Their first pastor with the Rev. Fr. William Fitzpatrick, who planned the new church* and made a study of Catholic families in the area under the direction of Bishop Robert J. Dwyer of Reno.

* Fr. William Fitzpatrick, C.S.V. refused to build the church on the chosen site when he discovered it had been an unofficial dumpsite and he returned to Chicago. Fr. Richard Crowley was then assigned as pastor and oversaw the building’s construction; well underway by the time he arrived.

Simple, Sacred Summer

Restoration of our church interior will take place this summer. While this work is underway, all weekend Masses will be held in our Parish School gymnasium. Additional seating will be available in the cafeteria with closed circuit television viewing.

Daily Mass will continue to be held in the chapel. Sacrament of Reconciliation will continue to be held in the chapel on Saturdays from 2:30 - 3:30 PM.

Have no fear - both the gymnasium and cafeteria are air conditioned! Also, ushers and greeters will be available to welcome and assist you to feel comfortable in our summer location.

If you are a long-time parishioner, you may remember when Masses were held in our Parish School gymnasium; for you this will be a trip down memory lane. For the majority of us, it will be a new adventure!

Because we will be in the gymnasium, with limited facilities, summer Masses will be simple; a Mass experience similar to what you find during the week in our chapel.

Kneelers will not be available in the gymnasium or cafeteria. You will be seated throughout a large portion of the Mass for your comfort.

If you have mobility issues and normally have Communion brought to you, we ask you to sit in the specially reserved section to facilitate reception of the Eucharist. The reserved seating can be found along the sides of the gymnasium and in the front of the cafeteria for easy accessibility.

Please refrain from wearing spiked heels to Mass this summer. The gymnasium floor could be damaged by this type of shoe.

To celebrate Simple Sacred Summer, our Youth Group will provide free snow cones our first weekend in the gym, which is June 11 & 12. This yummy treat will be available for a small donation throughout the rest of the summer!

PARKING The majority of us will continue to park in the main church parking lot and walk to the school.

The school parking lot will be reserved for our parishioners who have mobility issues. The staff lot, with an entrance off Eastern Avenue, located directly in front of the school office, is designated specifically for individuals with disabled parking placards.

An accessible drop-off area is available in the school horseshoe lot, located directly in front of the school cafeteria, with easy pull through for the driver.

Maps are available in the church foyer, and on the following bulletin pages, to further explain the school parking lots. Lot entrances are clearly marked and the drop-off area is highlighted. We encourage you to take a map and drive over to the school if you normally park in an accessible spot in our church’s lot. Volunteers will be on hand in the school parking lots when Mass begins in the gymnasium to answer questions.

One day a woman got on a bus and sat with her 4 year old daughter. The whole ride she said, "hold on Marge, hold on, you will make it through Marge, just a little further Marge, just a little further, hold on...." When she got off another woman told her, "that is so nice of you to comfort little Marge." The woman looked puzzled, "No, my daughter's name is Ann, I'm Marge." While taking a report at an elementary school, I was approached by a little girl about six years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, "Are you a policeman?"

"Yes," I answered and continued writing the report. "My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?" "Yes, that's right," I told her. "Well, then," she said as she extended her foot toward me, "would you please tie my shoe?"
