Introduction

MyfirstintroductiontoaVHFradiowaswhileenjoyingaweeklongsailingvacationaroundtheGreekIonianIslands.Myhusband,Simon,andIjoinedforceswithanothercoupleandhireda33’sailboat.Thefourofusbecamepartofasailingflotilla.Everymorningwewouldbebriefedwithourdestinationfortheday.Thevacationcoordinatorswouldmakesurethatweleftourmooringandthenhelpedustodockuplateronintheafternoon.

Inordertocommunicatewiththecoordinatorsor‘LeadBoatCrew,’whokeptcloseby,wehadtousetheVHFradio.Thankfully,myhusbandandoneofourfriendshandledallthecommunications,asmygirlfriendandIweretooscaredtousetheradio.I’mnotsurewhatcausedmyfearoftheradio–perhapsIdidn’twanttomakeamistake?

Ourinitialsailingvacationendedupbeingahugesuccess.MyhusbandandIwerehookedforlife.Wewentontoenjoy10moreyearsofsailingexcursionsandeventually,wepurchasedourfirstboat–aMoody35’sailboat.

IntheUK,wherewekepttheboat,thelawrequiresthatatleastonepersonperboatpossessesaVHFlicensesoSimontookthefulldaycourse,passedtheexamandwasgrantedalicense.Fortunatelyforme,IonceagaindodgedresponsibilityfortheVHFradio.

Oncewetradedour35’Moodyinfora56’Oystersailboat,soldallourpossessionsanddecidedtosailaroundtheworld,IthoughtthetimehadcomeformetofinallyfacemyfearoftheVHF.ButdidIreallyneedtotakeawholecourseontheradio?

IsaVHFRadioCoursereallynecessarytotake?

AftersailingaroundtheSolent,amassivelybusywaterwayoffofEngland’ssouthcoast,andlisteningtotheVHFradioforacoupleyears,IinitiallypoohpoohedtheideaofgettingmyVHFLicense.

SimontooktheVHFRadiocourseandobtainedalicensewhenwefirstpurchasedourboat,soaslongasonepersonhadalicenseIfeltfinetolethimholdalltheknowledge.Andfrankly,Ialwaysthought,‘Howhardcanitbe?’IcouldeasilycallupmarinaandaskforaberthifIhadtodoso,soanythingelsewillbesimilar.Yes?Andiftheworst-casescenariohappened,andIhadtomakeaMAYDAYcall,Iwouldjustpushthescaryredbuttonontheradioandthenfollowthetemplatetapedtotheundersideofournavigationtable.

Whatif…

StevesenttheRoyalYachtingAssociation(RYA)VHFRadiocoursebooklettousacoupleweeksbeforethecoursesowedidn’thavetospendcoursetimelearningtheinformationfromthebook.Ifitwasn’tforthehomeworkthatSteverequestedpriortoourclass–apageofquestionstobefilledout–Iwouldhavefailedtoreadthe

book.Again–Ithought,‘howhardcanthisbe?’KnowingIhadhomeworktodo,Ireadthebookanddidthehomework.

TheRYAVHFRadiobookletwasactuallyquiteuseful

Asidefromthefirstcouplepagesfilledwithofacronyms(R&TTE,DSC,SRC,CEPT)thatIknewIwouldneverremember,theRYAbookwasverystraightforwardandeasytoread.Itprobablytook30minutestogetthroughandwhenIfinishedIwasfullofallsortsofinformation.PoorSimonhadtolistentomesay,“DidyouknowtheworldMAYDAYcomesfromtheFrenchword,M’aidezanditmeans‘helpme’?AnddidyouknowthatyouneedtosendoutaDSC(DigitalSelectiveCalling)AlertpriortomakingaPANPANvoicebroadcast?”

TheVHFRadioCourse

Thedayofthecoursefinallyarrived.ArrivingattheSouthamptonDryStackaftereatingabaconrollIwaseagertoputthedaybehindme.I’veneverbeenafanofcourses.IgetboredeasilyandIdon’tlikenumb-bum–thesensationyougetwhensittingtoolong.

Well…Iwaspleasantlysurprisedwiththeflowofthecourse.NeverduringthedaydidIwishthattimewouldpassquickly.Therewasamixoflearning,watching,usingtheradio,coffeebreaksandgeneralsocializing.Everythingtaughtwaspractical–itwasn’ttheoryorsomethingthatwouldgoinoneearandouttheother.

Anditwassopowerfultoseethedifferencebetweenlearninghowtousetheradioandthenusingit.Mostofusseemedlikewehaditmasteredbutwhenwewentto(pretend)callanotherboat,theCoastguard,ormakeaMAYDAY,wefounditharderthanwethought.Ensuringtosaywhoyouare,whomyou’recallingandfinishingthemessagewiththecorrect‘over’or‘out’wasn’taseasyasitlooked!AndtalkingslowenoughforotherstowriteyourMAYDAYwaschallenging.NotonepersonintheclassspokeslowenoughfortheothermemberstocorrectlynotealltheMAYDAYinformation.

Thankfully,bytheendofthedaythewholeclasssoundedmuchbetterthanwhenwestarted.Ifanyofusdidn’tgetitquiteright,Stevewouldhaveusgothroughthecallover.

Tosaythatjustmyconfidenceincreasedwouldbeanunderstatement

Itwasmyconfidence,myknowledgeandtheimportanceofthesubjectmatterthatincreased.LearninghowtousetheVHFRadioisnotaboutmakingsureyoucancallamarinatorequestaberth–it’sadevicethat’stheretopotentiallysaveyourlifeandthelivesofthoseinyourarea.

UntilItookthecourse,Ididn’trealizethatthealarmthatperiodicallywentoffonmyboatwasanurgentmessagealert.Ididn’tknowIwassupposetogogetapenandpapertowritedownthefollow-upvoicedistressmessage.Ididn’trealizethatIcouldpotentiallyrelayamessagetotheCoastguardonbehalfofaboatthatcouldn’ttransmitfarenoughfortheCoastguardtohear.Ididn’tevenknowthatyoucouldcallanotherboatthroughtheDSCsystemifyouhavetheirMMSI(MaritimeMobileServiceIdentity)number.Furthermore,Ididn’tknowthatIcouldlistentomorethanonechannelatonce–there’sdual-watchortriple-watchoption.

Thelargesttake-awaysfrommyVHFRadiocoursewereasfollows:

1. Makesureyoursafetyequipmentisworkingandroutinelyserviced.It’sanobviousonebutit’sveryimportant.

2. CreateMAYDAY,PAN-PAN,MAYDAYRELAYandAccidentalAlertResponsesastemplates.Getthemlaminatedandhavethempositionedneartheradiosothatanyonecanpullthemoutandfollowtheinstructions.

3. Putthenameofyourboat,callsignandMMSInumberneartheradiooronthetemplatessoifavisitorhastouseyourradiotheyknowalltheimportantdetails.

4. TeacheveryguestonyourboathowtheradioworksandwherethetemplatesaretoactivatetheDSCsystemandmaketheappropriatefollow-upcalls.

5. Makesureallthelicensesareuptodateandinyourname(ratherthaninthepreviousownersname).IfaMAYDAYistriggeredtheCoastguardmightcontacttheemergencycontactdetailsregisteredonthelicense.Ifthelicensehasn’tbeenupdatedfromthepreviousowner,youcanimaginetheimplications.

So,isaVHFRadiocoursenecessarytotake?

Myanswerisadefinite‘Yes.’Unfortunatelyit’soneofthosesituationswhereyoudon’tknowwhatyoudon’tknow.Bytakingthecourse,you’llincreaseyourconfidenceonusingaVHFRadio,understandhowtomaneuveryou’rewayaroundthemenusystemandmostimportantly,you’llunderstandwhattodowhenanemergencystrikes.Overall,theVHFRadiocourseisinvaluableandIthinkeveryonewithintheboatingcommunityshouldtakethecourse.

WhetheryoutakeaVHFcourseornot,however,aftertimepassesit’sveryeasytoforgethowtosetoffaDSCdistressorurgencymessageandfollowupwiththecorrectbroadcastmessage.Furthermore,whenyou’reinapotentiallylife-threateningsituationoremergencyitcanbedifficulttoremaincalm.

Byhavingquick,easytounderstandandaccessibleinstructionsandbroadcasttemplatesyounotonlymakeiteasierforyourselftobroadcastinthecorrectmanorbutyouhaveasystemthatallowsforothersthatmightnotknowhowtousetheVHFbutareforcedtodoso.

- Channel16isthechannelthatyoushouldkeepyourradiotunedtoatalltimes.It’susedforinitiallycallinganotherboatorplace,emergencies,messagesfromtheCoastguardandsafetywarnings.

- Alwayslookattheradiochannelbeforeusingit.Someonecouldhavechangedthechanneltohearaweatherforecastorspeakwithsomeoneandfailedtoturnitbacktochannel16.

- Holdthemicrophoneashortdistanceawayfromyourmouthandmakesureyoudepressthesidebuttontospeakbeforeyoustartspeaking.

- Whenyouspeakallowyourvoicetoprojectforwardandacrossthemicrophoneratherthanspeakingdirectlyintothespeakingarea–yourvoicewilltransmitmoreclearlythisway.

- Speakasslowasyoupossiblycanduringadistressorurgencybroadcast.Thesloweryouspeaktheeasieritisforpeopletowritedownyourmessage.

- Beconscioustothefactthatmanyfisherpeopleandmaritimeworkersuseavarietyofchannels.Makeyourmessagesquickandconcisesothatyou’renothoggingtheradiospace.

- Don’teverysay‘overandout’!Thatessentiallymeans‘overtoyouandalso,I’mhangingup.’Youcan’tdobothatthesametime.Anyonelisteningtoyourcommunicationwillthinkyou’reagoofball(orworse)!

- WhenyousendoutanautomaticMAYDAY(pushingaMOBbuttonordepressingthedistressbuttonontheradio),doyourbesttofollowitupwithaverbalmessage.BoatsthatreceivetheMAYDAYmessagearerequired,bylaw,toassistanyonethatsendsoutanalerthoweverifyoucanverballyconveyyoursituation,youmightgetaquickerresponse.

- BylawyouneedtoholdalicensetouseaVHFradioORusetheradiounderthesupervisionofalicenseholder.Manyboatersdonotabidebythislaw.

- IfnooneanswersyourVHFbroadcast,therulesstatethatyoumustwaitatleasttwominutesbeforeyoucallagain.Usually,ifyoudon’thearbackfromthepersonyou’recallingaftertwoattempts,you’rebestbetistotryagainlater.

- Whenreadingoutnumeralstheprotocolistospeakthemdigit-by-digit.Forexample,whenspeakingaboutalatitudeandlongitude,you’dsaysomethinglike:Fivezerodegreesonetwodecimalfourminutesnorth,zero,zeroonedegreestwoeightdecimalsixminuteswest.Andwhenreadingtime,12:30wouldbeonetwothreezero.

- Usethephoneticalphabet(A,forAlfa,ispronounced‘AlFah’)whenlistinganyletters.Forexample,mycallsignisMike(M)Charlie(C)Delta(D)Juliet(J)eight.WhenspeakingoveraVHFradioit’softendifficulttohearsothephoneticalphabetreducesthechanceofmishearingaletter.I’veprovidedaphoneticalphabettableattheendofthisguideasareference.

- Usephoneticnumeralpronunciationwhensayingnumbers.Forexample,oneispronounced,‘Wun’andtwoispronounced,‘Too,’andsoon.Again,I’veprovidedatableattheendofthisguide.

- TimeisnotedinUTCorUniversalTimeCoordinated–it’sthesametimeasGMTorGreenwichMeanTimewithoutadjustmentsforBritishSummerTime.DuringthesummerBSTisonehouraheadofUTC.Talkaboutconfusing!Ifyoudon’thaveaninstrumentthattellsyouUTCjustsaythetimeandexpressit’s‘localtime’.

- MostboatsarenowfittedwithwhatiscalledaDSC(DigitalSelectiveCalling)system.Thatmeansthatyoucansendoutanautomaticdigitalmessagetoeveryvesselinyourareaalertingthemtoanupcomingbroadcast.ThealertwillcauseanalarmtoringoutovertheVHFradiooneveryvessel.ThisalarmthenenablesthecrewtolistenandtakenoteoftheincomingMAYDAY,PAN,orSÉCURITÉmessage.OnmyradioIhaveahandheldunitandtosendaDSCalertIhavetopressthe‘AllShip’buttonandfollowtheinstructions.Onotherradiosyoumighthavetoscrollthroughamenu.

- Ifbychanceyoucan’tfigureouttheDSCsystem,don’tletitbogyoudown.Findthechecklisttemplateyouneed(furtheralonginthisguide),fillitoutandgetontheradiotomakethenecessarybroadcast.

- Englishistherecognizedinternationallanguageinthemaritimeworldbutthatdoesn’tmeanthateverymarinaorboatyoupasswillbeabletospeakEnglish.I’veexperiencedmooringupinseveralmarinasintheMediterraneanandnoonespeakonewordofEnglishsodon’tmakeassumptions.

- Don’tbesurprisedifyou’resailingaroundandhearmusicbroadcastonchannel16forhoursatatime.Forsomereasonsomeveryunprofessionalboatersthinkit’sfunny.ForfourhoursaroundtheBalearicsandalongtheeastcoastofSpainweweregracedwithRussianmusicduringanightsail.

- Ifyouhavethebudget,Irecommendgettingahand-heldVHF.Notonlydoesitallowforuseinthecockpitifyoudon’thaveacockpitradiobutitcanalsocomewithyouifyouhavetounfortunatelyleavetheboat(abandonship).

- MAYDAY=DistressandpushingaredbuttonandPANPANorSÉCURITÉ=Urgencyandrequiressomesortofmenuselectiontosend.TheVHFradiopeoplehavemadethingsquiteconfusingwithalltheirterminology.Ifyoucanjustremembertheequationatthebeginningofthisbulletitwillhelpyoudifferentiatebetween‘Distress’and‘Urgency’.

MostnewbieVHFradiousersstartoffbycallinganotherpersonoramarina.AftermakingafewcallsusingtheVHFbecomessecondnature–justlikeusingthetelephone.Here’sanexplanationonhowtocallsomeoneusingtheVHFradioandinthenextsectionofthebookyou’llfindatemplateyoucanusetowriteamessagebeforebroadcasting.

¨ MakesurethatthatVHFisonandnooneisusingthechannelpriortomakingacall.

¨ Saythenameoftheboatorperson/placethatyou’recallinguptothreetimesandthensaythenameofyourboatuptothreetimes.

¨ Whenthepersonyou’recallingresponds,ifyou’reonChannel16,youthenneedtosuggestmovingtoadifferentworkingchanneltocarryontheconversation.Neverholdaconversationonchannel16asitisforinitialcontactandemergenciesonly.

¨ Oncethepersonyou’recallingrespondsthatthey’removingtoanotherchannel,youthenchangechannelsandsaytheboatnameuptothreetimesandthenyou’reboatnameuptothreetimes.

¨ Aftertheboatyou’recallingresponds,bothpartiescanthentaketurnsspeakingsaying‘over’wheneverthepersonspeakingisdonetalkingandwaitingforareply.

¨ Whenallcommunicationsareoverthelastpersonspeakingneedstosay‘out’toindicatethattheconversationhasended.

Thereasonthataboatnameissaiduptothreetimesistoincreasethechancesthatthepersonbeingcalledcanheartheirboatnameandtheboatnameofthepersoncalling.Aftertheinitialcommunicationofsayingbothboatnamesthreetimes,callersoftendropdowntosayingthenameoftheboatonceornotatall.

WhenlisteningtotheCoastguardtalkyou’llalwayshearthemsaythenameoftheboatthey’redirectingtheirmessagetoandthentheCoastguardnameduringeverytransmission.

Forexample,theCoastguardwillsayeverytime,‘Britican,SolentCoastguard,(message),over.’Cruisers,ontheotherhand,droptheformalitiesaftertheinitialconnectionismadeandoftentalkasifthey’reonatelephone.It’simportanttonote,however,thatifyouwanttofollowtheradioregulationstheboat’snamemustbestatedeverytimeatransmissionismade.

Whenwe’resailingaroundandknowinglyhavefriendsintheareaweoftendiscussachanneltolistenonforcallingratherthanusingchannel16.Wethensetourradiostolistenonchannel16andanon-commercialchannelifwewanttohearfromorcallourfriends.OnaVHFradiothereisoftenadual,orevenatriple,watchbuttonthatallowstheusertomonitormorethanonestationatatime.

Whenitcomestocallingamarina,themarina’soperationalchannelisoftenlistedinthepilotbookoronaposteroutsidethemarinawalls.Alwaysavoidusingchannel16ifpossible.Furthermore,everytimewe’veusedchannel16tocallamarinathey’veneverresponded.

Withinthenextsectionofthebookthere’satemplateyoucanusetowritedownthenecessaryelementstocallinganotherboatorplace.WhenIfirststartedoutontheVHFIwroteeverythingdownsoIensuredasmoothconversation.AfterusingmytemplateseveraltimesIeventuallyhadtheconfidencetomakeacallunassisted.

Aftermuchconfusion,theMAYDAYalertwasdiscoveredtobeafalsealarm.ThealertwassentoutaccidentlyfromasailingschoolteachingVHFradioprotocol!
