Another story of persistenceBrody Mihocek’s dream four-goal AFL debut for Collingwood last Sunday was the culmination of another story of persistence involving a player developing himself in the Peter Jackson VFL.Mihocek reached the elite level the hard way.
The 25-year-old starred at U18 level for Tasmania in 2011 but missed out at the draft s later that year. Undeterred, he crossed to Victoria for the 2013 season and played at local level for a year before joining Werribee’s VFL list.
Mihocek played a handful of games for the Tigers in 2014-15 and then moved to Port Melbourne, where he starred over the last two seasons in defence and played in the Borough’s 2017 VFL premiership team.
The Magpies selected him in last year’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft and, aft er some good recent form in the VFL playing as a forward, he received the chance he’d been waiting over six years for.
Mihocek’s story is similar to that of star North Melbourne AFL key forward and fellow Tasmanian Ben Brown, who played for Werribee in 2013 aft er having missed out at the 2010 draft s due to a serious knee injury. Brown impressed the club’s AFL aff iliate so much that the Kangaroos selected him in the 2013 AFL Draft – and the rest is history.
No matter the reason for players missing out at the draft s, the important thing to remember is that the dream isn’t over.
Look at the stories of three other draft ees from the VFL in 2017 who have played regularly at AFL level this year: Melbourne’s Bayley Fritsch came to the Casey Demons directly from local level, Hawthorn’s David Mirra skippered the Box Hill Hawks for four seasons and the Western Bulldogs’ Billy Gowers was previously delisted by Carlton before receiving a second chance following a year with Footscray.
They are among 65 VFL players draft ed or rookie-listed in the last seven years, including Kyle Hartigan (Werribee to Adelaide), Kane Lambert (Williamstown to Richmond), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon VFL to AFL) and Tom Stewart (Geelong VFL to AFL).
The VFL can help develop all kinds of players in many diff erent ways.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 10We look at each game in Peter Jackson VFL Round 10, including a crucial match for last year’s minor premier Williamstown as the ninth-placed Seagulls host a top-of-the-table Richmond outfit.
WILLIAMSTOWN vs RICHMOND – Sunday 2.10pm @ Williamstown Football Ground[LIVE on Channel 7]
V
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 6 @ Williamstown Football Ground: Williamstown 19.12 (126) d Richmond 10.11 (71)
FORM COMING INWilliamstown (9th, 4-4) has suff ered back-to-back defeats against top-eight teams, losing to Geelong and then the Casey Demons last week. Richmond (1st, 7-1) is sitting a game clear on top of the ladder on a four-match winning streak – including a big victory over a second-placed Collingwood in Round 9.
KEY QUESTION Can Williamstown captain Adam Marcon lead his team to victory? Marcon took the reins from long-time Seagulls skipper Ben Jolley this year and is in the team’s top three for total disposals, contested possessions and clearances. He’ll need to produce a big midfield performance against the club he played two AFL games for in 2016.
KEY STATRichmond’s ability to generate a heap of scoring opportunities from not a lot of possession has been a constant this season. The Tigers are ranked only ninth in the VFL for average disposals but are clearly the competition’s top team for inside-50s and goals per game on the back of their ability to create crucial turnovers.
COACH’S PERSPECTIVE
Williamstown senior coach Andy Collins on the team’s season so far:“It’s been really challenging. We’ve lost key people around our footy club like Arryn Siposs and Ayce Cordy and then weren’t able to recruit in those areas with mature players, so we’re very inexperienced in a lot of our key positions. The good thing is we’re really working hard as a group of coaches. I’m lucky to have Peter Banfield as my second-in-charge and Clint Proctor, Matty Pearce and Clay Illman as assistants. We’re doing a lot of teaching at the moment and we think we’ll get better as the year goes on.”
On the players that have impressed him this season:“Brayden Monk was our Development League best-and-fairest last year and he’s really stepped up and played every game as a small back this year. We’ve had Jake Greiser, Billy Myers, Brett Bewley, Michael Gibbons, Lachie Schultz and Ben Cavarra going from strength to strength among that young-20s age group, which is a
really good group for us. We just need to get our midfield firing a little bit and that’ll be a huge challenge against Richmond with Anthony Miles, Sam Lloyd and Jacob Townsend in there.”
On Richmond’s form in 2018 and the keys to victory on Sunday:“Their form has been very impressive. They’re just getting stronger as a footy club day by day and it’s a real credit to their coaches and players and their attitude. They’re clearly the best team in the VFL at the moment and they’re really healthy. We think we can get better from last week (a loss to Casey) and if we do, it’s going to be a good game. Winning the midfield battle will be a key, and putting territory pressure on the opposition; it’s about who can get the ball moving into their forward line and then lock it in there.”
Brett Bewley has been a consistent ball-winner
for Williamstown in 2018

* ROUND 10 BYE – Box Hill Hawks, Footscray and Northern Blues
CASEY DEMONS vs COLLINGWOOD – Saturday 2.10pm @ Casey Fields
[LIVE on Channel 7]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 8 @ Casey Fields: Casey Demons 15.12 (102) d Collingwood 13.5 (83)
FORM COMING INCasey (2nd, 6-2) has won four games on the trot, claiming its third top-eight scalp in the last month with a defeat of Williamstown in Round 9. Collingwood (3rd, 6-2) suff ered its first loss since Round 2 against Richmond last week, ending a five-game winning streak.
KEY QUESTIONHow scary does a healthy list make the Demons? Casey’s AFL aff iliate Melbourne is flying in third position with a short injury list and that’s reflected in the amount of AFL-listed Demons competing at VFL level. There were 18 of them in the team that defeated the Seagulls last week, while Collingwood had just eight AFL-listers in its Round 9 loss to the Tigers.
KEY STATIf Collingwood possesses the ball as much as it usually does – the Magpies are the VFL’s top team for disposals per game – it needs to stay calm and composed, as Casey is ranked equal-first for average tackles. The Demons are ranked only eighth for disposals but their tackling pressure ensures they still generate plenty of scoring chances.
WERRIBEE vs PORT MELBOURNE – Saturday 3pm @ Avalon Airport Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 15 @ RAMS Arena: Werribee 17.3 (105) d Port Melbourne 15.11 (101)
FORM COMING INWerribee (12th, 2-6) claimed its first win since Round 3 in defeating a fift h-placed Box Hill Hawks outfit away from
home last week. Aft er suff ering back-to-back losses at home, Port Melbourne (7th, 5-3) got back on the winners’
list against Frankston in Round 9.
KEY QUESTIONCan Werribee be the great disrupter in the second half of the season? The Tigers have lost three of their six
games by less than 16 points – to strong teams in Geelong, the Casey Demons and Footscray – and last week’s
triumph over Box Hill shows they can still shape the top eight even if they seem out of contention at the moment.
KEY STATPort Melbourne needs to find an answer for Werribee’s Sam Collins, who’s enjoying a stellar season in his first year
out of Fremantle’s AFL system. Collins leads the VFL for total marks (11 per game), contested marks (four) and
uncontested marks (seven) floating through defence, and Borough big men like Khan Haretuku and Guy Dickson
will need to keep him occupied.
V
V V
GEELONG vs NORTH MELBOURNE – Saturday 10am @ GMHBA Stadium
LAST ENCOUNTERNever played
FORM COMING INGeelong (6th, 5-3) has kept Williamstown and then the Northern Blues to very low scores in wins over the last two weeks. North Melbourne (8th, 5-3) is one of the VFL’s form teams, winning three straight games against Port Melbourne, the Box Hill Hawks and then Sandringham.
KEY QUESTIONIs this a clash between the two best VFL-listed midfields? Geelong has taken to calling its on-ball division of Tom Atkins, James Tsitas, Luke Kiel and Jordan Keras the ‘Quartet of Carnage’, but the big-bodied Cats will face stiff resistance from North Melbourne hard-nuts Nick Rippon, Chris Jansen and Nash Holmes this week.
KEY STATGeelong has proven particularly miserly in defence in its five wins this season, conceding an average of 56 points per game – including holding Williamstown to 37 points in Round 8 and the Northern Blues to 34 points last week. Something will have to give against North Melbourne, which averages 102 points per game in its five wins to date.
5www.taccup.com.au
SANDRINGHAM vs FRANKSTON – Sunday 2pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval
[LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2016 Rd 13 @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval: Sandringham 16.20 (116) d Frankston 9.2 (56)
FORM COMING INSandringham (11th, 3-5) won its first game since Round 2 two weeks ago but couldn’t back it up in falling to North Melbourne in Round 9. Frankston (13th, 2-6) has lost back-to-back matches against the Casey Demons and then Port Melbourne last week.
KEY QUESTIONWhat are the playing stocks like in Melbourne’s south-east? The answer must certainly be positive, given the VFL-listed talent in both of these teams. Sandringham’s local products such as Hayden McLean, Jonathan Haidon and Nathan Smith are making an impact, while Frankston is seeing great signs from the likes of Lachlan Gill-Renouf and Nathan Scagliarini.
KEY STATBilly Longer was a late out from Sandringham’s team to face North Melbourne last week, but it’ll be interesting to see him take on fellow St Kilda-listed ruckman Lewis Pierce – who has a special arrangement to play for Frankston – if both are available. The big men are ranked in the VFL’s top five for hitouts and hitouts to advantage per game.
V
ESSENDON vs COBURG – Sunday 12pm @ Windy Hill
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 6 @ Piranha Park: Essendon 22.18 (150) d Coburg 9.7 (61)
FORM COMING INEssendon (4th, 5-3) narrowly lost to Footscray last week to end a run of four straight wins. Coburg (15th, 0-8) will continue searching for the four-quarter performance that will deliver its first victory aft er pushing ladder-leader Richmond for long periods in Round 8 two weeks ago.
KEY QUESTIONCan Coburg produce four good quarters of football this time? The Lions may be winless but they’ve proven capable against top-eight opposition in stretches this season, only falling away in the last quarter against Richmond and the Box Hill Hawks while matching Collingwood and Williamstown aft er slow starts in recent games.
KEY STATEssendon will look to establish dominance at stoppages in this game, with the Bombers ranking third in the VFL for contested possessions and clearances per game and Coburg ranking in the bottom two in both categories. Essendon averages a significant 18 more contested possessions and five more clearances than the Lions.

News
Mihocek’s dream debutBrody Mihocek last week became the fifth Peter Jackson VFL player drafted in 2017 to have played an AFL game this year.25-year-old Mihocek kicked four goals from 12 disposals and five marks in Collingwood’s 61-point win against Fremantle at the MCG on Sunday.
