Betjeman & Barton began with Arthur Betjeman and Percy Barton, two gentlemen

with a vision, driven by their desire to introduce their conception of the English art of tea to the Parisians. These two tea experts decided to embark on a new adventure by opening the first shop in the French capital entirely dedicated to tea. This was in 1919 and Betjeman & Barton had just been created...

Inevitably influenced by French taste, Arthur Betjeman and Percy Barton proposed a perfectly balanced blend of cultures and created a unique universe,

a meeting place of Parisian chic and British fantasy. Their success was immediate and unprecedented.

Today, Betjeman & Barton has become a veritable institution and the company has boutiques all around the world (over twenty today), well-known by tea lovers. The duo formed by Arthur Betjeman and Percy Barton is now a trio of women. They have succeeded in perpetuating the spirit of the company, at the same time adding subtle touches of modernity, fantasy and femininity. Together they strive to keep the Betjeman & Barton universe alive and to ensure its future.

a beautiful story since 1919

More than a century-old company, Betjeman & Barton is a sign of excellence

coloured with originality managed by a trio of passionate women: Agnès Defontaine, the orchestra conductor, Myriam Kienzler, the administrator and Katherine Gregory, the set designer.

Since they took over the company, they have turned their creativity, determination and sensitivity to the benefit of the brand’s products and have revolutionised this ancient beverage of tea. Their talents and energy have breathed a new lease of life infused with modernity into Betjeman & Barton.

The three are shaking up the brand’s universe to create new energy and give it a strong identity in line with trends and with a feminine touch.

A word from Agnès defontAine

A business school graduate, Agnès Defontaine started out with the biggest names in French gastronomy, with the likes of Hédiard, Lenôtre and the Alain Ducasse Group, before taking the helm of Betjeman & Barton in 2004. With a dynamic, passionate and ambitious personality, she puts her skills and energy to the benefit of Betjeman & Barton to boost the brand’s image. For over 10 years she has been defending a vision of excellence and traditions coloured with creativity and femininity.Strongly attached to the values of Betjeman & Barton, she gives free rein to her sensitivity and inspiration to develop the company’s image and confirm its reputation as an exceptional tea merchant. For her, "Betjeman & Barton represents the perfect balance between an English conception of tea – purist, distinguished, slightly haughty – and the curiosity of the French for unique taste experiences. A unique blend of cultures where tradition and fantasy make the perfect combination." Over time, her aim is to "democratise the universe of the company" so that tea lovers can discover the thousand and one facets of this noble beverage with its infinite possibilities (sparkling tea, iced tea, cocktails, syrups, etc.).

a characteristic trio orchestrates the betjeman & barton universe

In glass and wood, the historical boutique on boulevard Malesherbes is a jewel box where all Betjeman

& Barton teas are revealed. Close to the Parisian boulevards and their department stores, the boutique is like a delicious alcove. the wooden counters smoothly polished by the caddies incessantly taken down from the shelves show off the 250 tea varieties, many of which are exclusive Betjeman & Barton creations. In 1998 the boutique won the award for the best food shop display window in Paris, mainly due to it being designed like a stage setting. Each window display is thought out by Katherine like an ode to tea, with delicious notes, fine crockery and vibrant colours. Once inside, famous tea lovers, anonymous tea fans who are always loyal to their tea and enthusiasts

with a curious nature are guided by Myriam and her team. It is essential that each one finds the tea that suits them. This is why, every day, a different tea is offered for visitors to taste.

In addition to the full menu of origin teas and flavoured teas, the boutique offers a wide range of tea services, silver or eccentric teapots, cakes and treats, caddies and gift boxes.

Betjeman & Barton is particularly careful to propose gift boxes that meet the same standards of quality as its teas. In addition to gift boxes on the themes of «Star», «Pen case» or «Vanity», the company unveils a collection of unique and luxurious Tea Chests, in Macassar, water snake and Karelian Birch, which preciously conserve the teas.

a quest for exception and excellence

At Betjeman & Barton, tea is sacred; this is why it has lasted for over 90 years! Over the

years, the family firm has acquired know-how and expertise which allow it today to propose exceptional teas elevated to the standing of real treasures, which are offered in many 4 and 5-star hotels in the world: Hôtel de Crillon, George V and other Four Seasons Hotels, Shangri-La, Park Hyatt, Sofitel, hotels from the Société des Bains de Mer, etc.

At Betjeman & Barton, buyers travel the tea gardens of the world to select the teas from the best plantations. Each tea undergoes a drastic selection process based exclusively on its ability to meet the expectations of the brand and the demands of its customers. Betjeman & Barton is the only company that proposes, among its loose teas, exceptional and fleeting tea varieties from small producers, which are often shunned by other tea companies. Each batch, regardless of its size, carries a story which the company passes on with the utmost pride.

Betjeman & Barton makes it a point of honour to create and maintain relations of trust with its producers, who are the guarantors of know-how, of a terroir and of the quality of the company’s teas.

Betjeman & Barton aims to propose products that meet the desires of each of its visitors; this is why it has over 250 tea references today, including some of the most precious in the world:

The Great Garden teas are gems of tea from exceptional plantations: Grand Si-chuan black tea from China, Gyokuro green tea from Japan or Assam Mokalbari East black tea. Like great wines, these «grand cru» teas have a strong colour, aroma and taste, and are full-bodied and characteristic at once.

First Flush teas are another of the company’s specialities: taken from the first pickings from March to the end of the cold spell, these green teas are lighter and highly aromatic. They consist of all of the company’s Darjee-ling teas and a few Chinese and Japanese green teas. They always take the name of the garden in which they flourished.

Because there are a thousand origins, a thousand flavours and just as many ways to

taste tea, the world of tea is infinite, rich and complex. Betjeman & Barton understands this, and this is why it has chosen to propose a wide range of teas to suit individual tastes and moods.

At Betjeman & Barton, the tea menu, consisting of blends of flavoured teas or traditional teas, is an invitation to travel and to discover. Full-bodied, light, smoky or flavoured: the tea references at Betjeman & Barton relive the 90 years of the company’s history and invite tea lovers to a tailor-made tasting experience.

At Betjeman & Barton, our motto is:

"No matter how precious a tea is, it has no value if it is not to your taste."

In 2012, the company inaugurated the first Tea Bar in France, a tasting venue that combines Parisian chic and

British fantasy. This Tea Bar, which is a bold alternative to traditional tea rooms, offers lovers of this noble beverage the opportunity to discover the Company’s original creations (sparkling tea, fruit-flavoured water, etc.) and also the essential loose teas, to be tasted on site or to take away. Every day, the Tea Bar spotlights one tea variety, providing the opportunity to discover and appreciate new tea flavours.

Chic and cosy, this boudoir-type venue has a particular kind of charm, where sensual aromas of tea and the company’s refinement and eclecticism intermingle. Everything here, from the collection of vintage tea caddies on the shelves to the samovars lined up behind the counter,

the tea Bar

evokes the perfect blend of genres between audacity and elegance, to which Betjeman & Barton holds the secret. Nestled comfortably in the Baroque armchairs in the entrance, or sitting at rough wooden tables, customers can enjoy the many teas, herbal teas and fruit-flavoured waters with a delicious pastry or other treat (gingerbread, cookies, etc.).

In this warm and welcoming atmosphere, visitors are easily transported into the world of Betjeman & Barton as they take their time over a tea break or as they make a quick purchase in the food boutique. In addition to a wide range of loose teas, the company proposes a range of exclusive specialities like biscuits, cakes and other delights made in Britain, as well as sugars from all over the world and different tea-drinking accessories.

When refinement and elegance meet fantasy

It may look like a wise and traditional company, but Betjeman & Barton is not afraid to shake up the company’s

aristocratic codes by creating modern and exciting designs on its iron tea caddies.

Never detracting from tradition or excellence, Betjeman & Barton offers tea lovers a spot of fantasy and has become a trendsetter in this respect.

At Betjeman & Barton, refinement and elegance mingle happily with the French rebellious spirit and art de vivre. The result is colourful and playful, and above

all very trendy! Plain or patterned, graphic or eccentric, Betjeman & Barton caddies make the teas dance every season. Of course, tea and teapots go hand-in-hand, and at Betjeman & Barton they occupy a central place in the tasting ritual. Since it was founded, the company has hunted high and low for unusual teapots from different eras: groom teapot (1935), dressing table teapot (1900), candy teapot(1973), etc., which are all on display in the Tea Bar.

Like Betjeman & Barton, these teapots recall the company’s philosophy, between tradition, elegance and fantasy.

Since it was founded in 1919, Betjeman & Barton has continuously reinvented itself

to anticipate changes in trends and to propose tea lovers products that are in keeping with the times. Always in search of inspiration and innovation, Betjeman & Barton lives up to its status of a company with an avant-garde attitude with original creations that keep this century-old company young.

At Betjeman & Barton, there is never a shortage of new tea tasting prospects...

fruit-flavoured water

Made with real bits of fruit, spices, hibiscus, rose hip, herbaceous plants and flower petals, the Fruit-flavoured Waters are tasty and original infusions that can be tasted iced or warm after brewing for ten minutes.

All the flavours of tea in a syrup! The idea was simple, but Betjeman & Barton

invented it! A house exclusivity, Tea Syrups are a unique invention based on two main classics from the tea menu: Malesherbes Tea and Pouchkine Tea.

Made from green Sencha tea from China, Malesherbes Tea Syrup is a tasty and fruity blend with flavours of vine peach, passion fruit and wild strawberry.

tea syrups

Pouchkine Tea Syrup is a blend of teas from China and Ceylon, the secret recipe for which has been closely guarded for over 40 years. Its Russian name comes from the highly aromatic association between bergamot and citrus fruits.

Tea Syrups can be tasted in cocktails, Champagne or simply in warm or cold, mineral or sparkling water. Tea Syrup can also be used in cooking, as a topping on tarts, in salads or yoghurts.
