1 - God Is Our Dependence in This Fallen World 1 – We Live in a Fallen World

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. (Genesis 6:11-12)

You are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall upon you because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD and provoke Him to anger by what your hands have made. (Deuteronomy 31:29)

The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men. (Psalm 12:8)

Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. (Psalm 35:19-20)

When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong. (Ecclesiastes 8:11)

Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke. (Isaiah 9:18)

The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their quilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. (Isaiah 24:4-6)

See, the LORD is coming out of His Dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her; she will conceal her slain no longer. (Isaiah 26:21)

So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey. The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice. (Isaiah 59:14-15)

I called but you did not answer, I spoke but you did not listen. You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me. (Isaiah 65:12)

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)

There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Because of this the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying. (Hosea 4:1-3)

You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts, therefor the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. (Amos 5:12-13)

I am planning disaster against this people, from which you cannot save yourselves. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of calamity. (Micah 2:3)

Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with her who lies in your embrace be careful of your words. For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law – a man’s enemies are the members of his own household. (Micah 7:5-6)

Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. (Habakkuk 1:4)

Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. (Matthew 10:21)

When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, “I will return to the house I left.” When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept

clear and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation. (Matthew 12:43:45)

Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! (Matthew 18:7)

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38) But this is your hour – when darkness reigns. (Luke 22:53)

The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. (John 1:5)

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. (John 3:19-20)

The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil. (John 7:7)

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. (John 15:18-19)

The Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin. (Galatians 3:22)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (Ephesians 2:1-2)

They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. (Ephesians 4:18-19)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1Peter 5:8)

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting

of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (1John 2:15-17)

We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. (1John 5:19)

2 – “In This World You Will Have Trouble”

Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. (Genesis 3:17-19)

I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil. (Job 3:26)

For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. (Job 5:6-7)

Does not man have hard service on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired man? Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired man waiting eagerly for his wages, so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have been assigned to me. When I lie down I think, “how long before I get up?” The night drags on, and I toss till dawn…my days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and they come to an end without hope. Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again. (Job 7:1-7)

I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. (Job 7:11)

Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. He springs up like a flower and withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. (Job 14:1-2)

Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness. The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me. (Job 30:26-27)

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish. Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. (Psalm 25:16-18)

Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. (Psalm 31:9-10)

A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all. (Psalm 34:19)

Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. (Psalm 39:6)

Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. (Psalm 69:20)

The length of our days is seventy years – or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. (Psalm 90:10)

But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. (Psalm 109:21-23)

If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. (Psalm 119:92)

Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. (Psalm 119:143)

Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. (Proverbs 14:13)

A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14)

If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength! (Proverbs 24:10)

What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 2:22-23)

Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand. This too is a grievous evil: As a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gain, since he toils for the wind? All his days he eats in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger. (Ecclesiastes 5:15-17)

As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them. (Ecclesiastes 9:12)

However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 11:8)

Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. (Isaiah 38:17)

The righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. (Isaiah 57:1)Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my day in shame? (Jeremiah 20:18)

It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. Let him bury his face in the dust – there may yet be hope. Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. (Lamentations 3:27-30)

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:10-12)

All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:22)

Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. (Matthew 24:9)

Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. (Luke 6:22-23)

You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life. (Luke 21:16-19)

We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:22)

We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. (Romans 5:3-4)

If indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:17-18)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are

considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:35-37)

To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world. (1Corinthians 4:11-13)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3-7)

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that His life may be revealed in our mortal body.(2 Corinthians 4:8-11)

Therefor we do not loose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger…through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. (2 Corinthians 6:4-10)

Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. (2 Corinthians 8:2)

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for Him. (Philippians 1:29)

Verses Good for the Soul

Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of His body, which is the church. (Colossians 1:24)

To strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. (1Thessalonians 3:2-4)

Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled. (2 Thessalonians 1:4-7)

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. (2 Timothy 3:12)

Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. (Hebrews 10:32-34)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4)

It is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps. (1Peter 2:19-21)

It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. (1Peter 3:17)

Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. (1Peter 4:1)

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the suffering of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. (1Peter 4:12-14)

However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. (1Peter 4:16)

So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. (1Peter 4:19)

3 – God Tests and Disciplines Us

Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning. (Exodus 20:20)

Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. (Deuteronomy 8:5)

To humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you. (Deuteronomy 8:16)

When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. But my love will never be taken away from him. (2 Samuel 7:14-15)

Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For He wounds, but He also binds up; He injures, but His hands also heal. From six calamities He will rescue you; in seven no harm will befall you. (Job 5:17-19)

If I sinned, you would be watching me and would not let my offense go unpunished. (Job 10:14)

But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. (Job 23:10)

But if men are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction, He tells them what they have done – that they have sinned arrogantly. (Job 36:8-9)

But those who suffer He delivers in their suffering; He speaks to them in their affliction. (Job 36:15)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. (Psalm 32:8-9)

For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver. You brought us into prison and laid burden on our backs. You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance. (Psalm 66:10-12)

I will punish their sins with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. (Psalm 89:32-33)

Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law; you grant him relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. (Psalm 94:12-13)

The LORD has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death. (Psalm 118:18)

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word… It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. (Psalm 119:67-71)

I know, O LORD, that your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me. (Psalm 119:75)

My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent His rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Those commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life. (Proverbs 6:23)

He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. (Proverbs 10:17)

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. (Proverbs 12:1)

He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. (Proverbs 13:18)

He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. He who ignores discipline despises himself. (Proverbs 15:31-32)

The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart. (Proverbs 17:3)

Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. (Proverbs 19:20)

Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:20-21)

Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. (Isaiah 38:17)

See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. (Isaiah 48:10)

For the LORD our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against Him. We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there was only terror. (Jeremiah 8:14-15)

I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve. (Jeremiah 17:10)

Verses Good for the Soul

Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. The LORD did not hesitate to bring the disaster upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything He does; yet we have not obeyed Him. (Daniel 9:13-14)

Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but He will heal us; He has injured us but He will bind up our wounds. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will restore us, that we may live in His presence. (Hosea 6:1-2)

Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light. Because I have sinned against Him, I will bear the LORD’s wrath, until He pleads my case and establishes my right. He will bring me out into the light; I will see His righteousness. Then my enemy will see it and will be covered with shame, she who said to me, “Where is the LORD your God?” My eyes will see her downfall; even now she will be trampled underfoot like mire in the streets. (Micah 7:8-10)

That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. (Luke 12:47)

When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. (1Corinthians 11:32)

To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:7-11)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4)

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. (James 1:12)

Verses Good for the Soul

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1Peter 1:6-7) Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. (Revelation 3:19)

4 – Our Hope Is in God

A – God’s Love

The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. (Exodus 34:6-7)

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. (1Chronicles 16:34)

O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love with those who love Him and obey His commands. (Nehemiah 1:5)

O our God, the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of love. (Nehemiah 9:32)

But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me. (Psalm 13:5-6)

The king trusts in the LORD; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken. (Psalm 21:7)

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:6)

Good and upright is the LORD; therefore He instructs sinners in His ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way. All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of His covenant. (Psalm 25:8-10)

I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. (Psalm 31:7-8)

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Psalm 36:5-9)

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him. (Psalm 103:11)

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him. (Psalm 103:17)

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. (Psalm 106:1)

Let them give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. (Psalm 107:8-9)

But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. (Psalm 109:21-22)

The earth is filled with your love, O LORD. (Psalm 119:64)

You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. (Psalm 119:68)

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1)

They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. (Psalm 145:7-9)

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10)

I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which He is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for us. (Isaiah 63:7)

I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight. (Jeremiah 9:24)

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. (Jeremiah 31:3)

Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity. (Joel 2:13)

Verses Good for the Soul

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. (John 15:9)

God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? …in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39)

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:17-19)

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1John 3:1)

Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1John 4:7-8)

This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1John 4:9-10)

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like Him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us. (1John 4:16-19)

B – God’s Mercy

I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (Exodus 33:19)

Verses Good for the Soul

The LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which He confirmed to them by oath. (Deuteronomy 4:31)

I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for His mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men. (2 Samuel 24:14)

The LORD your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn His face from you if you return to Him. (2 Chronicles 30:9)

But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God. (Nehemiah 9:31)

Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. (Psalm 25:6)

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will He harbor His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. (Psalm 103:8-14)

He has caused His wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. (Psalm 111:4)

The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The LORD protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, He saved me. (Psalm 116:5-6)

I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven. As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till He shows us His mercy. Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. We have endured much ridicule from the proud, much contempt from the arrogant. (Psalm 123:1-4)

Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him! (Isaiah 30:18)

A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. (Isaiah 42:3)

“For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD your Redeemer. (Isaiah 54:7-8)

“Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,” declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 31:20)

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassion never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. Though He brings grief, He will show compassion, so great is His unfailing love. For He does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. (Lamentations 3:31-33)

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against Him. (Daniel 9:9)

We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name. (Daniel 9:18-19)

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:18-19)

His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. (Luke 1:50)

Because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. (Luke 1:78-79)

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36)

I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. (Romans 9:15-16)

God has bound all men over to disobedience so that He may have mercy on them all. (Romans 11:32)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)

When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. (Titus 3:4-5)

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. (James 5:11)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you. (1Peter 1:3-4)

C – God’s Righteousness

I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He. (Deuteronomy 32:3-4)

Now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Judge carefully, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery. (2 Chronicles 19:7) In all that has happened to us, you have been just; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong. (Nehemiah 9:33)

Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right?...If you are pure and upright, even now He will rouse Himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place. (Job 8:3-6)

Surely God does not reject a blameless man or strengthen the hands of evildoers. (Job 8:20)

It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice. (Job 34:12)

God is mighty, but does not despise men; He is mighty, and firm in His purpose. He does not keep the wicked alive but give the afflicted their rights. (Job 36:5-6)

The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in His justice and great righteousness, He does not oppress. Therefore, men revere Him. (Job 37:23-24)

My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart. God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses His wrath every day. (Psalm 7:10-11)

The LORD is righteous, He loves justice; upright men will see His face. (Psalm 11:7)

For the word of the LORD is right and true; He is faithful in all He does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of His unfailing love. (Psalm 33:4-5)

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:15-18)

Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. (Psalm 48:10)

The heavens proclaim His righteousness, for God Himself is judge. (Psalm 50:6)

You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. (Psalm 65:5)

But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure. I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD; I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone. (Psalm 71:14-16)

Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you? (Psalm 71:19)

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. (Psalm 89:14)

The LORD is upright; He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in Him. (Psalm 92:15)

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. (Psalm 97:2)The heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory. (Psalm 97:6)

The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. (Psalm 103:6)

The works of His hands are faithful and just; all His precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness. (Psalm 111:7-8)

Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right. The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. (Psalm 119:137-138)

All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. (Psalm 119:160)

The LORD is righteous in all His ways and loving toward all He has made. (Psalm 145:17)

I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line. (Isaiah 28:17)

It pleased the LORD for the sake of His righteousness to make His law great and glorious. (Isaiah 42:21)

I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right. (Isaiah 45:19)

And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. (Isaiah 45:21)

I am bringing my righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. (Isaiah 46:13)

The law will go out from me; my justice will become a light to the nations. My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations. (Isaiah 51:4-5)

For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. (Isaiah 61:11)

But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing His wrath on us?...Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? (Romans 3:5-6)

God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled. (2 Thessalonians 1:6-7)

D – God’s Faithfulness

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19)

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

For the word of the LORD is right and true; He is faithful in all He does. (Psalm 33:4)

I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. (Psalm 89:1-2)

The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones…O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. (Psalm 89:5-8)

I will punish their sins with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. (Psalm 89:32-34)

For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100:5)

I know, O LORD, that your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me. (Psalm 119:75)

Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. (Psalm 119:89-90)

The Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them – the LORD, who remains faithful forever. (Psalm 146:6)

And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1Corinthians 10:13)

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

The One who calls you is faithful and He will do it. (1Thessalonians 5:24)

The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day. (2 Timothy 1:12)

Verses Good for the Soul

If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself. (2 Timothy 2:13)

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. (Hebrews 6:17-18)

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23)

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:9)

E – Gods’ Sovereignty

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. (Genesis 50:20)

To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. (Deuteronomy 10:14)

See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. (Deuteronomy 32:39)The LORD brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s; upon them He has set the world. He will guard the feet of His saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. It is not by strength that one prevails; those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to His king and exalt the horn of His anointed. (1Samuel 2:6-10)

All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s. (1Samuel 17:47)

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. (1Chronicles 29:11-12)

God has the power to help or to overthrow. (2 Chronicles 25:8)

If He snatches away, who can stop Him? Who can say to Him, “What are you doing?” (Job 9:12)

In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. (Job 12:10)

Dominion and awe belong to God; He establishes order in the heights of heaven. Can His forces be numbered? Upon whom does His light not rise? (Job 25:2-3)

Who appointed Him over the earth? Who put Him in charge of the whole world? If it were His intention and He withdrew His spirit and breath, all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust. (Job 34:13-15)

Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me. (Job 41:11)

I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. (Job 42:2)

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. (Psalm 2:8)

Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. (Psalm 22:9-10)

All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the LORD and He rules over the nations. (Psalm 22:27-28)

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. (Psalm 24:1)

But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands. (Psalm 31:14-15)

Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere Him. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm. The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. (Psalm 33:8-11)

Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. (Psalm 45:6)

For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. (Psalm 50:10-12)

Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. (Psalm 59:13)

He rules forever by His power, His eyes watch the nations – let not the rebellious rise up against Him. (Psalm 66:7)

May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations of the earth. (Psalm 67:3-4)

The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. (Psalm 74:16-17)

No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. But it is God who judges: He brings one down, He exalts another. (Psalm 75:6-7)

Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD – that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. (Psalm 83:18)

The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. (Psalm 89:11)

For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. (Psalm 95:3-6)

So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no man knows whether love or hate awaits him. (Ecclesiastes 9:1)

Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous. The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land. (Isaiah 10:22-23)

Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand. (Isaiah 14:24)

For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back? (Isaiah 14:27)

O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. (Isaiah 37:16)

I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, who carries out the words of His servants and fulfills the predictions of His messengers. (Isaiah 44:24-26)

So that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things. (Isaiah 45:6-7)

Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. (Isaiah 45:21)

Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son – both alike belong to me. (Ezekiel 18:4)

Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes times and seasons; He set up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness and light dwells with Him. (Daniel 2:21-22)

The Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes. (Daniel 4:32)

His dominion is an eternal dominion; His kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: “What have you done?” (Daniel 4:34-35)

The Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone He wishes. (Daniel 5:21)

But you did not honor the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways. (Daniel 5:23)

For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. He rescues and He saves; He performs sings and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. (Daniel 6:26-27)

Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey Him. (Daniel 7:27)

The LORD will be awesome to them when He destroys all the gods of the land. The nations on every shore will worship Him, every one in its own land. (Zephaniah 2:11)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be don on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9-10)

Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. (Matthew 15:13)

He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. (Luke 1:51-53)

I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him. (Luke 12:4-5)

It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. (Acts 1:7)

The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, “We are His offspring.” (Acts 17:24-28)

For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. (Romans 8:20-21)

In order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by Him who calls. (Romans 9:11-12)

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raise you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” (Romans 9:15-17)

But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? What if God, choosing to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the objects of His wrath – prepared for destruction? What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the objects of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory? (Romans 9:20-23)

Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! (Romans 11:34-36)

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (Romans 13:1-2)

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. (1Corinthins 10:26)

In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will. (Ephesians 1:11)

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. (James 4:12)

5 – Our Help Comes from God

I broke the bars of your yoke and enable you to walk with heads held high. (Leviticus 26:13)

The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

He will guard the feet of His saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. (1Samuel 2:9)

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights. (2 Samuel 22:33-34)

For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. (2 Chronicles 16:9)

The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to Him. (Ezra 8:22)

He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands. (Job 22:30)

He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food. (Job 36:16)

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. (Psalms 4:8)

For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield. (Psalm 5:12)

“Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will protect them from those who malign them.” (Psalm 12:5)

Show the wonder of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me. (Psalm 17:7-9)

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. (Psalm 18:16)

They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. (Psalm 18:18-19)

This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; He saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them. (Psalm 34:6-7)

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. (Psalm 34:8-10)

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:17-18)

A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. (Psalm 34:19-20)

Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. (Psalm 35:1-2)

The power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. (Psalm 37:17-19)

If the LORD delights in a man’s way, He makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD uphold him with His hand. (Psalm 37:23-24)

The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; He is their stronghold in time of trouble. The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in Him. (Psalm 37:39-40)

But now, LORD, what do I look for? My hope is in you. Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. (Psalm 39:7-9)

I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. (Psalm 40:1-2)

If you make the Most High your dwelling – even the LORD, who is my refuge – then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (Psalm 91:9-12)

“Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16)

Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law; you grant him relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. (Psalm 94:12-13)

Verses Good for the Soul

Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for He guards the lives of His faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 97:10)

Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love. Let them know that it is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it. (Psalm 109:26-27)

You who fear Him, trust in the LORD – He is their help and shield. (Psalm 115:11)

In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and He answered by setting me free. The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:5-6)

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. (Psalm 118:8-9)

I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. (Psalm 118:13-14)

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – He who watches over you will not slumber. (Psalm 121:2-3)

The LORD watches over you – the LORD is your shade at your right hand. (Psalm 121:5)

The LORD will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. (Psalm 121:7-8)

We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:7-8)

Though the LORD is on high, He looks upon the lowly, but the proud He knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. (Psalm 138:6-7)

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble. (Psalm 143:10-11)

The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them. (Psalm 145:18-19)

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God. (Psalm 146:3-5)

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. (Proverbs 3:23-26)

Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the LORD, and He will deliver you. (Proverbs 20:22)

You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall and like the heat of the desert. (Isaiah 25:4-5)

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3)

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (Isaiah 40:29)

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (Isaiah 41:13)

Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. (Isaiah 50:7)

Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. (Isaiah 64:4-5)

O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress. (Jeremiah 16:19)

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him. (Nahum 1:7)

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:29-31)

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this would you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. (John 17:15)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles. (2 Corinthians 1:3)

He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us. (2 Corinthians 1:10)

The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. (1Peter 5:7)

The God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. (1Peter 5:10)

The Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of Judgment, while continuing their punishment. (2 Peter 2:9)

6 – Perseverance

Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone. (Proverbs 25:15)

The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better that pride. (Ecclesiastes 7:8)

Verses Good for the Soul

All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matthew 10:22)

But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. (Luke 8:15)

By standing firm you will gain life. (Luke 21:19)

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. (Romans 5:3-4)

If we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. (Romans 8:25)

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. (Romans 12:12)

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus. (Romans 15:4-5)

Love is patience, love is kind…It always protects, always trusts, always hope, always perseveres. (1Corinthians 13:4-7)

Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. (Colossians 1:11-12)

Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. (2 Thessalonians 1:4)

May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. (2 Thessalonians 3:5)

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. (2 Timothy 2:10)

If we endure, we will also reign with Him. (2 Timothy 2:12)

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised. (Hebrews 10:35-36)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

Consider it purer joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4)

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. (James 1:12)

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. (James 5:7-8)

Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. (James 5:10-11)

For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for dong good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps. (1Peter 2:19-21)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. (2 Peter 1:5-7)

Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation. (2 Peter 3:15)

Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hourof trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. (Revelation 3:10)

This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus. (Revelation 14:12)
