IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Administrative/Biographical History: Verna Josephine Dozier was born in
Washington, D.C. on October 9, 1917. She was the older of two daughters of Lonna and
Lucie Dozier. Verna’s sister, Lois Gertrude, was born on May 1, 1919. Verna attended
and graduated early from Dunbar High School, and then enrolled in Howard University.
She graduated from Howard in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in English and then
received her master’s from Howard in English Literature the following year.
After receiving her master’s degree, Verna began working for the DC Public Schools
system. She taught English at Brown Junior High and Cardoza and Ballou High Schools
totaling a combined 34 years. In 1959, at Ballou, Verna was named Chairman of the
English Department and was advisor for the school newspaper. She would progress
professionally and, in 1968, became Curriculum Specialist in English and a team leader
for the Urban Teachers Corps. In 1972, as Assistant Director for the Department of
English, Verna helped create and lead a Title III grant to develop new curricula in
collaboration with both teachers and students. At the age of 57, Verna retired from the
DC Public Schools system and started to focus on what would become her second career.
Verna’s religious life began at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church where she attended
services with her mother and sister. In college she would attend services at the Howard
University chapel, often accompanied by her agnostic father. In the 1950s, Verna began
to grow a reputation as a skilled teacher of scripture and would increasingly participate in
activities of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, even teaching at the Diocesan School
of Christian Living.
In 1955, encouraged by her friend Bill Baxter, Verna joined St. Mark’s Episcopal
Church, Capitol Hill. It was here that Verna found a home in the Episcopal Church and
remained a parishioner for most of her life. Lois Dozier would remain at the Nineteenth
Street Baptist Church for the rest of hers.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, with her reputation spreading, Verna began to work
with women’s groups and, in particular, the Episcopal Church Women. It was at this
time that a close friendship with Dee Hahn-Rollins (nee Hahn) would develop. This
friendship continued until the end of Verna’s life; Ms. Hahn-Rollins would act as
executrix of Verna’s estate.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Verna dedicated her time to her second career as lay theologian.
She travelled the country and world teaching scripture, attending national and local
church conferences, consulting to church groups, participating in and leading adult
religious education events, and attending ecumenical conferences. It is at this time that
Verna started to publish her teachings and writings. She published Equipping the Saints,
a guide to studying scripture, in 1981. The following year Verna published an influential
book encouraging laity to be more active and proactive in the ministry of the Church
titled The Authority of the Laity.
The Dream of God: A Call to Return, Verna’s most influential and resonating book, was
published in 1991. This is during a prolific era for Verna when her time and teachings
were in high demand. She would do many interviews, contribute chapters to several
books, and publish many articles about her work and mission; most of which can be
found in this collection. Verna was even an adjunct professor here at Virginia
Theological Seminary teaching a class on the New Testament with Barbara Hall.
In 1992, Verna moved into Collington Episcopal Life Care Community in Mitchellville,
Maryland, with her sister Lois. This would be their last residence. Lois, lifelong friend,
companion, and roommate, died in 1998. Verna continued to travel, speak and write after
moving into Collington, but the pace slowed greatly as the new millennium approached
and the affects of Parkinson’s disease increased. Although fairly incapacitated for the
last several years, Verna still welcomed guests and enjoyed it when friends would read to
her from the Bible or the writings of Shakespeare. Verna Josephine Dozier died
September 1, 2006.
Verna’s was an accomplished life. She published 7 books, contributed chapters to four
more, wrote over ten articles and gave countless speeches and sermons. She delivered
the sermon at her friend’s, Bishop Jane H. Dixon, consecration as bishop, gave at least
four commencement addresses, and received 2 honorary doctorate degrees. A book about
ambiguity, a subject important to Verna, was in the works, but never published. Those
manuscripts are found in this collection.
Scope and Content: This collection consists of the materials belonging to Verna J.
Dozier at the time of her passing. It is known that both Verna and her sister Lois
destroyed many personal and family documents; this includes almost the entirety of their
correspondence. The items they did keep can be found here. This includes some
correspondence and many familial photographs, but the bulk of the collection is centered
on Verna’s ministry. Included herein are sermons, published works, interviews,
transcripts, photographs and videos all providing evidence of this part of her important
and influential life. She also preserved materials from the places she visited and many
people with whom she connected.
In addition to Verna’s items, there are two other possible creators of this material. First,
this collection contains the few items of Lois’ that Verna kept. These items have been
placed together and can be found in the first series.
The second ancillary collection is the Hahn-Rollins Series. Dee Hahn-Rollins and
subsequently her daughter, Stacey, were the executrices of Verna’s estate. It is apparent
that they too collected materials pertaining to Verna’s ministry, as well as soliciting and
collecting information about Verna posthumously. Here are a large number of sermons
(mostly duplicates), interview transcripts and audio/visual materials. This series also
contains some outgoing correspondence from Verna; these items are unique to this series.
System of Arrangement: This collection is arranged into 22 series. Seven of these
series are further broken down into subseries. When possible, folders are arranged
alphabetically and then chronologically. Images and then audio and visual materials can
be found near the end of the collection. The Hahn-Rollins’ materials are listed and
housed last.
Series 01, Personal/Biographical Information
This series contains the few personal materials of Verna’s in this collection. It consists of
five subseries: Verna J. Dozier; Correspondence; Ephemera; Lois G. Dozier; and Lonna
Dozier. The first three subseries all pertain to Verna, while the last two subseries are
about close family members, sister Lois and father Lonna.
Subseries 01.01, Verna J. Dozier
Although there are many photographs, documents pertaining to Verna’s personal
life are scarce. This subseries contains the few items that do exist. The bulk of
this series is the two scrapbooks which hold mementos of Verna’s ministry and
letters from many well-wishers. Also found is this series is “Verna’s Collington
Guest Book.” This contains inscriptions from many of the people that visited
Verna in her nursing home room and is evidential of the many lives she touched.

Subseries 01.02, Correspondence
This subseries contains the bulk of the correspondence found in the collection. As
previously mentioned, Verna and Lois destroyed many personal and familial
items, correspondence believed to be among them. Items here were mostly sent
to Verna and relate to all the places she had preached/taught and the people she
met along the way. Some of these letters contain photographs which remain with
the original correspondence. Very little outgoing correspondence is represented
here. This subseries is arranged chronologically by year.
[The collection does contain some outgoing correspondence of Verna’s to Dee
Hahn-Rollins. These items can be found in Series 22, The Hahn-Rollins Series
at the end of the collection.]

Series 02, Published Writings, Interviews, and Speeches (by VJD)
Arranged in five subseries, this series contains the published materials of Verna that she
kept. As a prolific writer and speaker, she was published in many forms. The subseries
reflect those forms: books, articles, interviews, speeches and sermons. This series does
not encompass the entirety of her publications, but these were the items Verna kept in her
personal papers. Other publications of Verna’s can be found in Series 22, the Hahn-
Rollins Series.
Subseries 02.01, Books
This subseries contains three of the seven books that Verna published. These
items remain with this collection; most of her other published books can be found
in the Bishop Payne Library collection or in Series 22, the Hahn-Rollins Series.

This series contains the unpublished manuscripts found in the collection. Portions of this
material may have been used to publish Confronted by God. The rest of the series
remains unpublished and gives insight to the projects Verna was working on.
Subseries 04.01 Ambiguity
Verna had intended to publish a book about her thoughts on ambiguity and, for
years, gathered many examples thereof. This series contains the evidence of these
activities: drafts, revisions, articles, jottings, clippings and notes. The items in
this subseries were scattered throughout the collection, but clearly belong together
because of the underlying theme of ambiguity. This series is arranged in the order
these materials were gathered from the collection.

Subseries 04.02 Unidentified manuscripts
This subseries contains the unidentified manuscripts in the collection. These
consist of small pages with notes, large groups of hand-written pages, as well as
typed. Some of these are articles; others may be chapters of a book. These
materials were scattered throughout the collection and gathered here. Which, if
any, of these manuscripts has been published, is currently unknown. The
materials are arranged as gathered; groupings are those of Verna.

Subseries 04.03 Novel manuscript
This subseries contains what is believed to be the unpublished manuscript of a
novel. This manuscript was found in two bags and separated into 17 smaller
groups. The fragile, hand-written in pencil documents have been re-housed in
four boxes; each page moved to individual enclosures. This manuscript even
includes a brief outline and character sketches. There is no mention of this
manuscript anywhere else in the collection. The original groupings have been
maintained and this series is maintained in the order it was found.

Series 05, Dream of God
This series contains the materials related to Verna’s book The Dream of God: A Call to
Return. Published in 1991, this book is an adaptation/compilation of the Advent Lecture
Series that Verna used to present to the congregation of St. Mark’s, Washington, DC,
annually. This series is broken into three subseries, the first containing drafts and
revisions, the second is items “For the Book”, and the third “Responses to the book”
[Verna’s designation]. For an actual copy of Dream of God, please see the Bishop Payne
Library catalog or Series 22, the Hahn-Rollins Series; for transcripts of actual Advent
Lectures, please see Series 06.04 Advent Lectures.
Subseries 05.01, Dream of God
This subseries contains drafts, edits and revisions of Dream of God, typically
arranged by chapter. Some of the edits are Verna’s, some are those of her editors
from Cowley Publications, but many are also from acquaintances from which she
sought feedback. The subseries is arranged in original order; groupings are those
of Verna.

handwriting “Responses to the book.” These materials are mostly correspondence
to the author in response to Dream of God. The bulk of the subseries consists of
letters and cards from friends and colleagues, and no doubt strangers, almost
exclusively supportive of Verna’s work. Many book reviews were also clipped
and kept in this envelope. The current order is that of the original housing.

Series 06, Transcripts
This series contains the transcripts of many of the public speaking engagements of
Verna’s. She was invited often to speak, preach and/or teach to congregations and
conferences all around the world. The total number is indeterminable, but the existing
transcripts of those endeavors are contained herein. Some of these may have been
published or adapted for publication; some were definitely copied for distribution. This
series is divided into four subseries: Sermons; Speeches, Addresses, and Teachings;
Parables – Gospel of Luke; and Advent Lectures. Some of these transcripts possibly
belong to multiple subseries, but mode of delivery and intent, when known, was
considered during arrangement; transcripts have been cross-referenced when possible.
Subseries 06.01 Sermons
This subseries contains the transcripts of sermons delivered by Verna. These
sermons are physically in many different forms: handwritten pages, typed pages
and photocopies; many contain notations. In keeping with Episcopal tradition, the
sermons are arranged in order of the Bible verse for which they were written; Old
Testament first, followed by New. Although never to be limited to one verse,
Verna would often use several; in such cases the transcript is filed under the
Gospel verse [Matthew, Mark, Luke or John] then cross-referenced with the
remaining verses listed. When no Bible verse was provided, the sermons are
arranged alphabetically by event and then alphabetically by title (if supplied).
When no verse, event, or title is supplied, the sermons are arranged alphabetically
by the first line of the text. Sermons with more than one of these headings are
cross-referenced accordingly.
This is NOT an exhaustive list of all the sermons found in the collection. Verna
also kept some sermons she preached with the materials from the church in which
she preached it. For more sermons, please see Series 13, Churches – Episcopal
and Series 15, Organizations. [Some of the sermons in these series may be
duplicates.]

Subseries 06.02 Speeches, Addresses, and Teachings
This subseries contains all the non-sermon public addresses, lectures, speeches
and teachings delivered by Verna. The majority of these are framed around the
Bible and Christian ethics, but their tone and audience suggest they were
delivered outside of the church service. The transcripts are often typed, but some
original manuscripts exist; there are also many photocopies. This subseries is
arranged alphabetically by the name of the event or organization for which it was
delivered, then alphabetically by title (if supplied). When neither of exist, the
addresses are arranged alphabetically by first line.

Series 13, Churches – Episcopal
This series contains the materials in the collection about Episcopal churches. It is known
that Verna travelled extensively presenting sermons and speeches, as well as teaching
Bible study. Verna kept files for these parishes and it is presumed that these materials
were collected by her while visiting there. The types of material in these folders vary
from bulletins and newsletters to sermons by Verna and correspondence to her by clergy,
vestry, and parishioners. The arrangement is that of Verna’s, alphabetical by church
name.
This series also contains the materials from St. Mark’s, Washington, DC. This was
Verna’s home parish and she kept separate files and folders for her St. Mark’s materials.
It is included here because it contains the same types of information, including sermons.
It also includes papers from her time as vestrywoman, the parish’s first Senior Warden
and subsequent appointment as Warden Emerita. The St. Mark’s materials in contained in
four folders; original order was maintained.

Series 18, Images
This series contains the majority of the photographic and other visual materials in the
collection. Verna had many photo albums and other groups of images. These photos are
of family and friends, places she visited and preached at, as well as of the many events
she attended. All of the images have been re-housed into separate boxes and archival
safe enclosures, but the original order of the albums, boxes of photographs, and rolls of
film has been maintained. This series consists of six subseries: Verna J. Dozier; Family;
Events; Framed Items; Grouped Images; and Loose Photographs.
Subseries 18.01, Verna J. Dozier
This subseries contains the images of Verna herself. These images are mostly
solely of her from various stages in her life, including a Howard University
graduation photo and one at the pulpit at National Cathedral. Most of these
images were found loose throughout the collection. This subseries is by no means
exhaustive, images of and with Verna exist throughout the entire Series.

20 1 Subseries 18.01, Verna
Subseries 18.02, Family
This subseries contains the images that Verna preserved of her family members.
Many of these images are of her parents and sister, Lois. Some are of earlier
family members and in older formats. Extreme care is required when handling
these fragile images.

Subseries 18.03, Events
This subseries contains the photographic evidence of just a handful of the many
events that Verna attended or lead. Each event’s images were grouped together
and labeled as such in the collection. Many of these event images were given to
Verna from event organizers or attendees. These images are mostly 3X5 and 4X6
color photographs and have been placed in hanging photograph boxes.

Subseries 18.04, Framed items
This subseries contains the images that were previously in frames. Presumably on
display at some point in Verna life, these images consist of family members, photos of
and with friends, and at events. Many of the framed images were recently labeled with
names. Although removed from the image, the labels have been preserved and remain
with the item. All of the images have been removed from the frames and re-housed.
There are also two small framed images that could not be removed, these items were
placed in Subseries 01.03, Ephemera.

intentionally grouped together. The images in the first 11 folders of this subseries
were found in a blue photograph box. The divisions presented are those of Verna
and the original order of the divisions and photographs within has been
maintained.
The remainder of the subseries is from the many photo albums found in the
collection. Some of these were constructed by Verna and others were given as
gifts. There also exists 2 Ziploc bags of photographs, 2 rolls of film and one
blank envelope. These items were re-housed to hanging photograph boxes.

Series 20, Audio
Verna’s collection contained a large number of standard audio cassettes; this series
contains those items. As with the video material, these are largely recordings of Verna.
Some are professionally produced as part of series or recordings of Verna’s presentations.
Some are more informal recordings of addresses, sermons, and oral history interviews.
The remainder of the series is a self-help course and 2 tapes of Lois Dozier. This series is
arranged chronologically; unknown or undated items are found at the end of the series.
Arrangements must be made in advance to hear the tapes.
After the completion of the arrangement and description of this collection in 2010, other
tapes belonging to Verna Dozier were found in the collection. They were then added to
this finding aid. They were given to the archive in an envelope labeled “Tapes of
Interviews with VJD *About her thoughts on Ambiguity.” That envelope contained the
following tapes: Box 28, Tapes 17-25, 27, 29-30, 35-36; Box 29 Tapes 1 and 10.

Series 22, The Hahn-Rollins Series
Dee Hahn-Rollins was an extremely close friend, confidant, and travel companion of
Verna; she even acted as executrix of Verna’s estate. Mrs. Hahn-Rollins and her
husband, the Rev. Al Rollins, received and held Verna’s belongings until their donation.
Mrs. Hahn-Rollins passed before the collection was subsequently donated to the African
American Episcopal Historical Collection. The material in this series consists of the
items about Verna that Dee Hahn-Rollins and her family (husband Al and daughter
Stacey) kept.
This series consists of items from Verna’s memorial service, obituaries, and “Personal
Remembrances of Verna.” After Verna passed away, the Hahn-Rollins’ solicited people
to mail them their personal thoughts on Verna, those responses can be found here. There
are also two CDs, one from Verna’s memorial service and another recorded a month later
titled “Rememberances of Verna Dozier.”
This series also contains clippings about Verna, as well as some of her published work.
There is also a large number of correspondence from Verna to Mrs. Hahn-Rollins and her
family. This series also contains many sermons [most of which are duplicates from
Series 06.01 Sermons] and some photographs. This series can easily serve as a quick-
reference guide to Verna’s life, but for in-depth analysis, the whole collection should be
consulted.
