Pat Carmichael wishes to thank all those who remembered Fred in notes, cards, e-mails, personal visits and telephone messages. It was far more than she expected and certainly more than her hus-band could have hoped for on the event of his death.

Fred will be remembered at the Dorset Playhouse on his birthday February 1, at 2:00 in the afternoon. Everyone is wel-come.

...knitters volunteered...Knitters from throughout the

community volunteered their time, talent, and yarn to help keep our neighbors warm this winter. Avid knitter and Community Food Cupboard volunteer Ruth Rosenfeld had the great idea to ask fellow crafters to use yarn left over from other projects to create scarves to donate to CFC, and the call was put out to local reli-gious congregations. Our friends at Black Sheep Yarns and Yarn for Your Soul helped to spread the word, offered to collect contri-butions and even gave out free yarn to help inspire participants. Donations began to arrive in late

November. By mid-December, hundreds of beautiful, hand made scarves, hats, mittens and even some children’s sweaters had been contributed!

Just before Christmas, Food Cupboard looked like a fash-ion boutique as the rainbow of winter-wear was displayed. Our CFC patrons were delighted and appreciative as they chose just the right item to help them brave the winter weather. Our thanks and gratitude go out to everyone involved with this project which brought joy and warmth to so many.

...budget vote...At a meeting beginning at 7

p.m. on Monday, January 11, at the Currier Memorial School in Danby, the board that is respon-sible for the school plans to vote on the budget that will be on the ballot for voters in Danby and Mount Tabor in the March town meeting vote. If you live in Mt. Tabor or Danby and would like the Union District 23 School Board to keep or cut certain items, or to spend or tax

at a particular level, please come and speak your mind, or give the Board your thoughts before the meeting. Any comments sent to me, Daniel French, at the address below or [email protected] will be shared with all seven Board members and the Superintendent. A copy of the Superintendent’s proposed budget is available from [email protected].

While the basic budget will be presented and can be discussed at the Annual School District Meeting in February, by then it will be too late to change what is on the ballot about the basic budget. The only budget vote in February probably will be on $25,000 to begin a fund to reno-vate the chronically leaky roof.

The January 11 meeting prob-ably is the last chance to decide what will be on the March bal-lot. Public input is especially important this year because we face unusually hard choices. The sluggish economy probably will lead to a decrease in funding from the State. To avoid having to raise more tax money locally, we probably will have to cut the staff or those benefits not set by union contract, or both. The Board would appreciate voters’ help with the difficult decisions.

...grant helps library...Thanks to a grant from the Thrifty Attic in Londonderry, the Wilder

Memorial Library will be able to purchase a canopy tent to use in the courtyard adjacent to the downstairs Children’s Room. In the summer, it will be able to accommodate larger groups of children, provide shade and be perfect for some of the messier projects. It will also be used for special library events and mini-book sales.

In addition to the funding of grants to non-profit organizations, the Thrifty Attic provides many services to our surrounding communities. We are appreciative of their good works!

Service NotesArmy National Guard Pvt. Jordan A. Jackson has graduated

from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma.During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army

mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weap-ons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

He is the son of Bret Jackson of Payreville Road, Brandenburg, Kentucky, and Penny Jackson of Wood Lane, Brandon, Vermont.

The private is a 2009 graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, Brandon.

Air Force Airman Dennis

A Hadrick graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in mili-tary discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fit-ness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the grandson of Emma Breault of Cedar Ridge Way, Fort Ann, New York.

Army Pvt. Firat Gordon has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.

During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map read-ing, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infan-try soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field fir-ing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area.

His wife, Jeanny, is the daughter of Randy S. Gordon of Nichols Road, Landgrove, Vermont.

New Book Club Welcomes ReadersTransition Town Meeting Book Club opens to the public on Thursday,

January 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Northshire Bookstore’s conference room. Participants will meet to choose books for each of the next 10 months from a list filled with titles that will compel the reader to pause, think, and grab a glimpse of how what we do today will impact our tomor-row.

The book club’s organizers welcome additional fiction and non-fic-tion title suggestions to engage the readers’ interest in climate change, sustainable living, “green” revolution/renewable energy, community building, and works of poetry that will inspire illuminating discussion leading to solutions.

The group will also decide host rotation and accompanying respon-sibilities for future book club discussions scheduled for every third Thursday of the month.

Winter ConcertThe Northshire Interfaith Chorus will present its winter concert,

“A Holiday Memory,” on Tuesday, January 12, at 7 p.m., at the United Church of Dorset in Dorset, Vermont, and again on January 13 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Manchester, Vermont. Featured solo-ists include Lindsay Dyett, Ruth Woodard, Judy Seltmann, Deb Lyon, Reverend Robert Carpenter and Jim Comar. Jeff Linebeck directs the chorus and Lynda Hobson is the pianist.

A suggested donation of $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors will be collected at the door.

The United Church of Dorset is located on Church Street in Dorset, Vermont. First Baptist Church is located at the corner of Main and Bonnet Streets at the junction in Manchester Center, Vermont.

NYS Regents and Mid-Term Examination Days

Please note that during the 4-day Regents and mid-term examina-tion period, January 26 through January 29, 7th - 12th grade students are to report to Salem Central School only when they are scheduled to take an examination. Morning exams begin at 8:15 a.m. and afternoon exams begin at 12:15 p.m. In addition to the normal morning bus pick-up, students will also be provided with an additional bus run at 11:00 a.m. each day. Students who are only taking a morning exam will be transported home at 11:00; while students who take an afternoon exam will be transported home by either the 2:25 p.m. bus or the 3:12 p.m. bus. If your child only needs to come to school for a 12:15 exam

and needs bus transportation to school, it is necessary that he/she sign up for the bus in the high school office prior to the day of the exam.

Equinox Terrace wel-comes its new Executive Director, Mary Ellen Dunham. From an early career in nurs-ing, both in Emergency Room and as Director of Nursing, Mary Ellen moved into the field of elder care and has spent the past 16 years as Executive Director of an assisted living facility in New Hampshire. When she first visited Equinox

Terrace, she was immediately impressed by the happy demeanor of residents and staff members. Besides getting to know everyone at the Terrace, Mary Ellen looks forward to becoming part of the Manchester community and has already visited, with pleasure, the Mark Skinner Library and the Northshire Bookstore.

Join the Sheffield Historical Society, Bushnell-Sage Library, and author Amy Bass who will present a book talk and signing at Sheffield’s annual Martin Luther King Day program. In “Those About Him Remained Silent,” Amy Bass provides the first detailed account of the battle over W.E.B. Du Bois and his legacy, as well as a history of his early life in Berkshire County.

Showing the potency of prevailing, often hidden biases, the book is an unexpected history of how racism, patriotism, and global politics played out in a New England community divided on how — or even if — to honor the memory of one of its greatest citizens. Lasting Mammories Are Now in Artists Hands

Combining sculpture, philanthropy, symbolic artistry and 54 local individuals and businesses, Lasting Mammories has created one-of-a-kind plaster forms of 18 female and male torsos that have been turned over to 18 local artists, being designed and customized over the next three months. The sculptures will then be auctioned off this spring at the 2010 For the Love of Tea event to raise consciousness and funding for The Pink Ribbon Diva Foundation (501-C3 pending).

The casts are physical representations of a simple truth – because breast cancer attacks all women (and men) without prejudice. It is the powerful individual presence in all those afflicted that will fight it and conquer it. The Lasting Mammories fundraiser and The Pink Ribbon Diva Foundation’s (501-C3 pending) goal is to bring a fresh perspective to this important cause in a way that is relevant and inspiring to all those affected by breast cancer.

Maple Street School, heads to Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership

Fran Bisselle, Head of Maple Street School, has been awarded a fully-funded fel-lowship to the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership’s 2010 Heads of Schools program at Teachers College, Columbia University. This distinguished award,

granted to just twenty heads of school annually, provides independent school leaders with an opportunity for focused professional enrich-ment, renewal, and reflection.

For two weeks beginning January 23, 2010, visiting heads from around the world gather together at the Columbia University Campus for intensive study to examine educational issues and policies fac-ing independent school educators. The Center attracts and selects educators who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment or potential for excellence and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for informed and effective practice. The 2010 cohort includes Heads from all areas of the United States in addition to par-ticipants from Namibia, Panama, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Swaziland, Thailand and Turkey.

The Klingenstein Center is dedicated to improving the quality of independent school education by developing and strengthening lead-ership among teachers and administrators who work in independent schools in the United States and throughout the world. Learn Belly Dancing at Grace Cottage Hospital

Full of fun, laughter, mystery and joy, belly dancing is a great form of exercise for people of all shapes, sizes, and ages. Grace Cottage Hospital will host another session of its popular beginner belly dancing class on six Wednesdays, January 20 to February 24, 6:15-7:15 p.m., in the Grace Cottage Community Wellness Center, 133 Grafton Road, Townshend.

Belly dancing is fun, and it can also help with posture, flexibility and coordination. Participants will learn about the physical and mental health benefits and practice basic belly dance movements in a fun, sup-portive environment. Each class begins with a warm-up. Wear comfort-able clothing and bring yoga pads and hip scarves if you have them.

The class instructor is Robin Rieske (visit www.shimmies.net for more information). Rieske has been dancing for over six years and is currently a member of Troupe Sahibat. She performs all over New England and enjoys sharing her passion for belly dancing with others. Burr and Burton junior Sydney Gayda attended the 2009 Teen Vogue Fashion University in October. Only 500 high school students were selected from around the world. During the weekend-long event she chose the classes she wanted to attend, met many fashion icons like Kimora Lee Simmons and Thankoon Panichgul, and learned the inside story of what goes on the fashion world…as well as had a lot of fun.

“My designs are mainly retail, ready-to-wear for my line company called SYDAE,” she explained. “It really has become a huge part of my

life and there is nothing I would rather be doing than designing. TVFU is an international as well as a national event. There were also students from all over Europe who attended.”

Learning directly from some of the top leaders in the fashion indus-try was truly a life-changing experience for Sydney. “I learned that being a designer is not an easy task - it requires constant hard work and dedi-cation. But with the encouragement and insider advice provided to me at TVFU, I feel, more than ever, ready to take on the world of fashion and get my designs out there.”

Junior Brooke McGowan was one of 40 semi-finalists chosen from over 1,000 K-12 students who entered an art competition sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League’s A World of Difference Institute. The idea of the contest was to create a piece about diversity and there was a size requirement. Brooke chose to do an acrylic painting of an eye with the iris as the world and the pupil a hand and around it a quote by Jimmy Carter: “We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” Her work was exhibited at the Boston Children’s Museum and the Peabody Museum this fall.

Senior Chelsea Charbonneau got best in show at the Bakuretsu Convention in Colchester, Vermont, sponsored by the Anime Society of Vermont this fall. Anime is a form of Japanese animation that has gained worldwide popularity. Chelsea has been drawing in the anime style for six years. “I started playing around with my own style once I started getting more serious and focused on getting into drawing as a potential career. I was never huge on animes on TV or the Web, but series like “Miyazaki” films, the “Ghost in the Shell” movies, and “Serial Experiments: Lain” are ones that I still enjoy watching when I get a chance.”

RAVNAH Holds H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinic

The Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice (RAVNAH) and Dorset Nursing, with support from the Coalition for Adult Immunization in the Rutland Region is hosting a public clinic for H1N1, seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccinations on Wednesday, January 20 at Green Mountain College in Poultney from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The H1N1 vaccine is now available to the general public for all indi-viduals age 6 months and older. Seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccina-tions are available for all adults age 18 and older.

There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine. For the flu and pneumonia vaccine, individuals who have Medicare Part B need only bring their card. For all others, the cost for the flu immunization is $33 and the cost for the pneumonia vaccine is $53. Mastercard and Visa are accepted.

RAVNAH recommends that everyone dress appropriately for the weather and wear clothing that allows quick and easy access to your arm for the injection.

Ski for Heat FundraiserThe Ski for Heat fundraiser will kick off with a special Benefit

Concert given by “Downtown” Bob Stannard & Friends on January 16 at Burr and Burton Academy’s Riley Center for the Arts. The Ski for Heat event itself takes place on January 31 at Wild Wings Ski Touring Center in Peru.

Ski for Heat is a community fundraiser to help local families with heating fuel assistance. Proceeds go to the Shareheat Fund at BROC. It is a fun and easy way for everyone to participate in contributing to the Shareheat Fund at BROC. All donations, up to $5000, will be matched dollar for dollar by CVPS shareholders.

The Benefit Concert is also a CD release party to introduce Stannard’s new CD: “Bob Stannard & Friends – Live at the Black Door.” Burr and Burton Academy is donating the use of its facility for this special perfor-mance given by arguably Vermont’s hottest Blues Band working today.

Harmonica player and Blues singer “Downtown” Bob Stannard has performed live with BB King, Charlie Musselwhite, and John Hammond to name just a few. He will be joined by an assembly of accomplished and well-known musicians to make this a night of extraordinary entertainment. The searing guitars of Dennis Willmott and Billy “Silvertone” Carruth and classic keyboards of Nick Sherman and the driving rhythm section of bassist Tom Buckley (formerly with Eddie Taylor) and drummer Jason Corbiere (formerly with Roomful of Blues) will be filling the house.

Expect some special guests and surprises that will all come together to make this the best Blues show of 2010. A suggested donation of $20 is being asked. Wild Wings Ski Touring Center is the venue for Ski for Heat, the cross-country skiing or snowshoeing day of fun and fundraising. There is no registration fee to participate and Wild Wings owners Chuck and Tracy Black have again generously donated the use of their trails to skiers and snowshoers who are taking part. Participants may arrive and leave as their schedules allow.

Battenkill Chorale Fifteenth Anniversary Season

The Battenkill Chorale, Janet McGhee Artistic Director, opens its fifteenth anniversary season with Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem January 30 and 31, both at 3 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 35 Hill Street, Greenwich, New York. The 120-voice Chorale and profes-sional orchestra will be joined by soprano Gene Marie Callahan and bass-baritone Keith Kibler. Soprano Gene Marie Callahan made her operatic debut at Chicago Lyric Opera and an international debut in Graz, Austria. She has sung leading roles with some of the world’s finest conductors including James Levine and sung in performance with artists including Renata Scotto and Sherrill Milnes. Born in Glens Falls, Ms. Callahan trained in New York City, Chicago, and France. She teaches voice at Skidmore College and the Emma Willard School and maintains a private voice and piano studio.

Keith Kibler made his national debuts at the age of twenty-four with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Boston Symphony under Seiji Ozawa. He has sung leading opera roles and appeared in concert inter-nationally with artists including Jon Humphrey and Elly Ameling.

Twice a Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center, Keith Kibler’s doc-torate was earned at Yale University and the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Kibler teaches in the music department of Williams College and also lectures frequently at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

In conjunction with this concert, acclaimed artist and Battenkill Chorale soprano Virginia McNeice will have her work for sale begin-ning one half hour before each concert, continuing during intermission and after each concert.

This spring, the Battenkill Chorale will collaborate with the Skidmore College Community Chorus, also directed by Janet McGhee, to pres-ent Carl Orff ’s Carmina Burana at the new Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College on May 1 at 8 p.m.

Alexandra Langstaff is the owner and director of Hullabaloo Danceshop. This interactive program will include warming up the body and mind in order to start moving and creating movement in many ways. Dorset Theatre Festival Announces New Artistic Director in time for

35th Anniversary Season!The Dorset Theatre Festival is pleased to announce that Dina Janis,

a Dorset, Vermont resident, has been appointed the Artistic Director for the 2010 season. A director and actress, Dina has been a member of the Drama Faculty at Bennington College in Vermont for the past 10 years. Dina has worked in collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Labyrinth Theatre Company in NYC as an actor and director for the past five years and also hosted their well-known Lab Intensive at Bennington College during the summers of 2005 - 2008. This intensive brought over 150 top theatre artists together for two weeks each summer for the purpose of developing new plays. Some of the artists that have participated in the past include Eric Bogosian, Sam Rockwell, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ellen Burstyn, Daphne Rubin Vega, John Patrick Shanley, Bob Glaudini, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Cusi Cram, Jose Rivera, Adam Rapp, among others. Dina is a lifetime mem-ber of the famed Actors Studio in New York, currently led by Ellen Burstyn, Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel. As a director she has worked extensively with new plays includ-ing working with such well-known writers as Theresa Rebeck, Sherry Kramer, Stephen Adly Guirgis and George Plimpton.

Building on the legacy of profes-sional theatre at the highest level, Dina plans on producing works drawn from the canon of modern and classic plays, as well as increas-ing programming for New Play Development by the festival in collaboration with The Lark Play Development Center of New York. These plans will include hosting the upcoming Theresa Rebeck Writer’s Retreat in spring 2010, fol-lowed by monthly Staged Readings at the Festival during the summer and concluding with third Annual Rebeck/Lark Writers Retreat Readings in August. Dina plans on expanding the festival’s children’s programming, and will also design and create a new Apprentice/Intern

training program which will wel-come selected youth from the area. With these exciting ideas and plans for increased commu-nity involvement by the acting company, 2010 promises to be a full and fun filled season. Join us as Chef Stanti; owner of the Victorian Inn in Wallingford, Vermont cooks up a menu showcasing his European roots. A native to Switzerland, Chef Stanti Schönbächler started his international career in London. He continued on to Canada and eventually settled in the United States. In 1982, as sous chef at the Brasseries Restaurant in New York City, he gained invaluable experience. This allowed him to grow his career as executive chef at renowned establishments such as the Rockefeller Center Restaurants in New York City, The Hollywood Diner in California and the Panevino Restaurant in Washington D.C. From 1989 to 1991 he took reign at the newly renovated Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In 1991, while searching New England for a place to call his own, Chef Stanti and his family were drawn to the rolling Green Mountains which reminded Stanti of his native Switzerland.

Cooking with European Flair

In January of 1992 Chef Stanti and his wife Soo opened the beautiful Victorian Inn at Wallingford, which has earned a reputation for its amazing food and customer service. The menu style is European/New American food with a hint of the Far East. Through the years, they have provided their guests with many memorable dining experi-ences. MEMS Awarded

Technology Grant

Manchester Elementary-Middle School (MEMS) has been selected as a recipient of a competitive technology grant, collaboratively sponsored by the Vermont Principals’ Association, VITA Learn, the University of Vermont (UVM), and the Richard E. and Deborah L. Tarrant Foundation. Those schools with the greatest potential to become regional models in stu-dent-centered, technology-rich learning were chosen to receive the grant. Only six schools were selected in Vermont, and MEMS will serve as the Southwest model school after training is completed. An E-Learning team of four MEMS teachers plus principal Jackie Wilson will engage in graduate coursework, online and at UVM; visit a model site in Maine; and put a plan in place to bring training back to the MEMS staff. An on-site coach will be available to MEMS three days per month, to help integrate this new technology learning into the curriculum; as well as to develop and provide three workshops available to schools in the region. Mrs. Wilson said, “Needless to say, it is an honor to be chosen for this work and we know it will have a significant impact on learning here at MEMS.”

The fourth graders at MEMS recently spent a fascinating half-day at the Berkshire Museum, in Pittsford, Massachusetts, where they met a live snake, turtle, gecko, and rabbit; and learned many interesting facts about a variety of reptiles and mammals, also including raccoons, foxes, and beavers. Students impressed the staff at the museum with their attentive, thoughtful observations while carefully examining pelts, paws, scales, and shells. Enhanced learning experiences like this field trip, linked to curriculum studies, are essential parts of a quality education and provide students with unique, first-hand, and interactive activities that are not available within the four walls of a classroom.

‘Banner Day’ at the Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce

The Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce will kick off its tenth annual “Banner Program” sign-up beginning at 9 a.m., at the Chamber offices at 5046 Main Street in Manchester Center on January 26. The “Banner Program” has historically offered our non-profit sector a meaningful and successful venue for showcasing their events in our community and attracting attendance at events that ben-efit the community as a whole.

The program is open to non-profits hosting events in the Manchester region that benefit the local community. This year the banner program has a new location on Routes 11/30 south of Aubuchon Hardware. Guidelines and applications are available at the Chamber offices. A por-tion of the fees for participating in the banner program go to support non-profits in the community. Applicants must provide a drawing or digital image of the banner they propose displaying along with a cer-tificate of insurance at the time they submit their application. Not for Profits and For Profits hosting an activity to benefit a local non-profit may apply but will not receive first priority.

BKVR’s annual race directors’ meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 13, at 7 p.m., Arlington Community Center, Route 7A, Arlington, Vermont. At this meeting, we close out the calendar of club races for 2010 and submit our races and dates to Road Runners Club of America and its liability insurance company. No races can be added to BKVR’s schedule after this time.

Since BKVR is required to oversee all races on the schedule to insure safety, etc., a representative from each race is required to be present. Topics up for discussion include sponsors, publicity, race management, safety, insurance, and finding volunteers.

Ron Marcellus Named Head Coach of New NHA Midget Team

The Northshire Hockey Association (NHA) has named Ron Marcellus head coach for the newly formed Catamount Midget A/B hockey team. Marcellus played professional hockey in France, and for four years at Bowdoin College in Maine. He has coached several youth teams including the Can-Am teams and the Bowdoin College summer clinics. Assistant coaches will be Gary Grabarz, Rick Jenkins and Nick Petry.

“We feel lucky to have this high level of coaching available for this new team,” said Pete Keelan, president of the NHA. “This is a great opportunity for hockey players in the southern Vermont area who do not have access to high school hockey to continue competitive play.”

The new team is open to players between the ages of 15 and 18. The season will run January 17 through March 21, 2010, with an evaluation session and practice on January 17 from 10:45 a.m. to noon. Home practices will be on Saturdays and Sundays at the Riley Rink in Manchester, Vermont. Cost per player is $70.

Smoke Free Zone at Magic MountainMagic Mountain creates a smoke free entry zone around the ski

resort’s base lodge. In an effort to create a safe and healthy environ-ment for all guests, patrons and employees of Magic Mountain, the management established a fifty foot smoke free parameter surrounding the entries to the base lodge. This zone includes the skier drop off area and the large deck area overlooking the mountain’s slopes. In mak-ing this announcement, Jim Sullivan, President, said, “We are happy to be working with The Collaborative in trying to cre-ate a healthier work environment and assisting our employees in quitting smoking.”

Hildene Book ClubThe second Monday of every month, the Hildene Book Club meets

to discuss books on a wide range of relevant topics. Their choice for January is “The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin” by Gordon S. Wood, a respected scholar of the Colonial and Revolutionary periods.

In his review of the book for The Washington Post entitled “How a ‘true-blue Englishman’ became the icon we know so well,” Jonathan Yardley notes that, “Wood’s biography follows two broad lines of inqui-ry. The first, as its title makes clear, is Franklin’s slow, difficult progress from ardent supporter of England and its empire to a complete reversal that left ‘no one … more committed to American independence than Franklin.’ The other is the powerful sensitivity to social stratification, traceable to his impoverished childhood and adolescence, that implant-ed in him ‘an anger with those who claimed an undeserved social supe-riority that would become an important spur to his ambition’.”

Winter Vegetables Available at Dorset Farmers’ Market

Leeks: able to winter in the ground and have a delicate onion flavor. The white and pale green shank is the edible part on this veggie and the dark green leaves should be discarded. Slice leeks and rub under run-ning water, or submerge in water, to remove dirt from inner leaves and store in an open plastic bag in crisper.

Celeriac or Celery Root: choose from firm roots, still being picked fresh from outside. They have a mellow celery flavor with a crisp apple-like texture. Make a mash with potatoes, puree and layer with potatoes for a gratin, or puree with potatoes and cream for a soup. Wrap in a damp paper towel to store in crisper.

Cabbage: look for moisture rich specimens at market. Green is good for homemade sauerkraut and coleslaw; red for slow braising with pork and red wine; savoy for stirfrys. Store in plastic bag in crisper

Parsnips: choose at market those that feel rigid. Their texture resem-bles a dry sweet potato and are great glazed like carrots or whipped with potatoes, butter and cream. Store in an open bag in crisper.

Kids’ Classes & Camps at SVAC The Southern Vermont

Arts Center will be offering new kids’ activities, art camps and after school art classes — and bringing back some annual favorites — starting in February.

First up, on Saturday, February 13, it’s the return of SVAC’s very popular Teddy Bear Tea Party, from 2-4 p.m. In addition to enjoying tea, juice, sandwiches and sweets, partygoers and their favorite bears will participate in a variety of activities, includ-ing crafts and stories.

The February School Break Art Camp, co-hosted by Bogate Designs, returns on Monday, February 15 and runs through Friday, February 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This camp features visiting artists teaching two classes per day (morning and afternoon), each covering a different media or activity, and students may enroll in as few or as many sessions as they’d like.

New this spring, the Arts Center will be introducing After School Art Classes starting on February 24 and 25 and continuing each Wednesday and Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., through the end of the school year.

spring musical production, “Guys and Dolls,” will take place on Monday, January 25 and Tuesday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dorset Playhouse on Cheney Road in Dorset, Vermont. Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, “Guys and Dolls” is a classic from the golden age of musical comedy, set on the colorful and tawdry Broadway neigh-borhood of the 1940s made famous in many of Runyon’s short stories.

Director Steve Sinding and music director Linda Hueckel are looking to fill around 15 male and 9 female roles, plus singers and dancers to fill out the onstage chorus. All the characters are adults. Those auditioning will be given a short singing and/or dancing routine to perform. It is not necessary to attend both nights of auditions. Performance dates are set for May 20-23 and May 27-30.
