parents who were present and supported our school on the day. Thanks also to Khristian Mizzi for his yearly planning of our involvement in this significant and esteemed event. Vermont Secondary College also commemorated ANZAC Day on Monday at our official Junior and Senior College assemblies. I thank the student population for their formal participation in this annual event and I again thank the College band, led by Jeremy Shannon, for their excellent musical accompaniment of the official ceremony. Special thanks to Max De Nardis for singing the national anthem and to Lachlan Rae for playing The Last Post and The Rouse. Under the ‘adopt an ex service organisation’ program Vermont Secondary College has formed a partnership with the 10th Australian (AIF) Field Ambulance Association. We now have their Honour Roll in the College and a range of memorabilia. This year at our assemblies, we were privileged to have Ted Young, President and veteran, Michael Englefield, Secretary and Julie Mayberry representing the Tenth Field Ambulance Association all present. Ted was able to speak to both assemblies with a heartfelt and poignant message about the meaning of ANZAC Day. With the relationship that has been formed, the two school captains and myself were honoured to join the 10th Australian (AIF) Field Ambulance Association for lunch on ANZAC Day at their AGM following the ANZAC city parade to the Shrine. As part of this association in 2015, following the ANZAC Day assemblies, we planted a descendant of the ‘Lone Pine’ on the front lawn near the flagpoles with Wendy Ward also representing the 10th Australian (AIF) Field Ambulance Association. With the warm but wet summer we have encountered the pine has well and truly taken off. This relationship is one we look forward to continuing and growing in future years.

Tax Deductible Building and Library Funds As tax time is approaching, parents/guardians are reminded that donations to Vermont Secondary College’s Library Fund and Building Fund are Tax Deductible and the College welcomes donations of any size. While we have received government funding for the new Senior Science/Maths complex this will go towards the building itself. The College will need to provide the funding for furniture and science resources required within the complex. Direct deposits to: BSB 313-140; Account No: 12050892, Account Name: Vermont Secondary College. Please use your child’s student code as the identifier. All money raised is used to enhance facilities for your student/s. Receipts will be forwarded to you for tax purposes.

School Attendance There is a growing concern that students, particularly seniors, take the day off prior to a public holiday. Every day away is a day you potentially fall behind and in Year 12 all days are important. It was made very clear to all students in the previous week that Monday was a normal school day and this was reiterated in the eBulletin last Thursday and in a separate email to families. It is important that the school community read the fortnightly school Newsletter and eBulletin or ring the school rather than relying on the word of your teenager. Excuses like “my teachers said” (they did not) and “none of my friends are going” are just not acceptable. The following is an excerpt from the DET (Department of Education and Training) website:

The importance of full time attendance We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. School participation helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

There is no safe number of days for missing school. Every Day Counts. Each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Limited school participation is associated with a greater chance of dropping out of school, disruptive and delinquent behaviour and may lead to a cycle of rebellion against authority. I thank the school community in anticipation of your support in this matter and thank the many students who did attend on Monday.

YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY REPORT Throughout the last two weeks of term 1, Year 9 Geography classes (9.0, 9.2, 9.4, 9.6, 9.8) went to Vermont South Shopping Centre to investigate food security and biomes. We went to Coles to look at where their food comes from, and then compare it with Aldi food, to see if they source food from Australia. The day was really fun and educational, especially as we could eat and investigate at the same time! Thank you to all the Year 9 Geography teachers who came and helped us, (Ms Allison, Ms Todaro, Mrs Trippet and Mr Message).

Sin Sin Biak, 9.8

On 21 March our classes went to the Vermont South Shops for Year 9 Geography fieldwork. We wanted to look at the ingredients and foods that are sold in Aldi and Coles. Even though we had torrential rain and an unreliable bus, we still had the best time! I enjoyed researching where all my fruit and vegetables come from. The project we did afterwards was also really interesting and fun. Thank you to Ms Allison and Ms Todaro for all their amazing help.

YEAR 8 REPORT Homework vs Home Study Students believe that studying and doing homework is the same thing. However, they should be approached as two very distinct, separate tasks. Homework commonly consists of assignments that teachers assign to be completed at home by students. The general purpose of homework is to reinforce the knowledge and skills that are being taught in the classroom. Studying, on the other hand, refers to time students spend on their own to go over material that they have learned in class. Studying could include making flashcards, taking detailed notes, making outlines and reading. Year 8 students can also avail themselves of the opportunity to go to ‘Homework Club’ every Monday afterschool with Ms Wells and Ms Ramsaran.

Student Progress Conferences If you were unable to attend the Student Progress Conferences and still want to make contact with teachers, we encourage you to phone the General Office on 8872 6300 or email the teachers directly through the Parent Portal.

Year 8 Science - The Periodic Table Although it's not a set part of our curriculum for Year 8 students, 8H1 and 8H2 are very competitive! So at the end of last week to compliment our topic of Chemistry, we had a Periodic Table recital competition. The students in the photos all gave it a go with Elise and Imogen taking home the pride and glory of being able to recall the most elements on the Periodic Table. Elise even presented hers as a song! Well done, Year 8's.

STUDIO ARTS UPDATE Late last term, our principal Mr Jacobs, our Learning Area Leader, Ms Aeschlimann and I, had the pleasure of attending the opening of Top Arts at the NGV. Top Arts presents exceptional work from students who have completed Art or Studio Arts as part of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It was a very exciting evening as we had the opportunity to see diverse artworks and catch up with Rachel Watt who was selected from our Studio Arts 2016 class. You can hear Rachel discuss her artwork and studio practice in this interview available on the NGV website: http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/top-arts-2017/ Later that week I attended another opening – this time at Monash Gallery of Art to celebrate the opening of Top Shots. Gabriel Menzies was a finalist in this exhibition that celebrates the excellence of VCE students undertaking Photomedia as an art form. Gabriel was very proud to show off his photograph and had a lot to say about the photography course he is now studying- he has found his passion in life and is following his dreams! Whilst Top Shots has now concluded Top Arts is still open until 16 July at NGV, Federation Square. Our current Year 12 Studio Arts students recently had the opportunity to put into practice some critical thinking skills when we spent a day in the city at a range of exhibitions. Viewing artworks in the gallery context is fundamental to developing an understanding the relationships between the ways artists work, the role of artists in our society and the art industry. We started our day viewing Top Arts, spent some time viewing the folios that accompanied the work then went upstairs and explored the diverse range of artworks on show. We had a lot of fun using a framework for looking when discussing contemporary artworks. In the afternoon we had a fabulous experience with one of the Education Officers at NGV International who led us through REALTIME by Miyanaga Aikra and the Bill Henson exhibition – both a part of the Festival of Photography.

Book Review Club Students who like to read and review books old and new, are now meeting once a week in L02 to check out new books, discuss and recommend their favourite reads. Here is a review from Sue in 7S1. Book Reviewed : Anne of Green Gables Author : L.M Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables tells the heart warming story of Anne Shirley, an orphan who is reluctantly taken in by the Cuthbert’s to work at the farm, Green Gables. Although they go through tough times, Anne's lively character and outrageous actions keep the story light and humorous. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who's looking for a pleasant afternoon read. Thanks to Sue for the review. Any students interested in joining the club please contact Ms Simpson in the Library.

LIBRARY NEWS Continued VSC Cyber Safety Reasons you need to change your password right now Thanks to Mr Hew for bringing this interesting article to our attention…… We recommend that you test your password at www.haveibeenpwned.com

Nobody likes spending their free time coming up with unique, cryptographically sound passwords using numbers and symbols – or at least, nobody I would like to meet. But that's why it's so important. Passwords are dull. Entering your password into a website is one of the most tedious parts of your day as it is: it's even worse if you have to type a 15-character long mix of upper- and lower-case letters. Just having your browser remember a single password is much, much easier. While people who use the password “123456” and “password” are the lowest-hanging fruit, alarmingly, you're probably not that much tougher a mark to hit. Here's why you should change your password right now.

Your information is likely already out there Okay, here's a wake-up call for everyone who thinks it won't happen to you. It probably already has – and it wasn't your fault. The password process has two points – you entering it, and the website receiving it – and there are plenty of places that have been hacked in the past few years. Off the top of my head: Yahoo, Dropbox, AdultFriendFinder, LinkedIn and Yahoo again. And all of those were in 2016. “But I don't use any of those services,” I hear you cry. Okay, here's a little experiment:

open a new tab and go to www.haveibeenpwned.com

enter your email addresses into the box.

stare in horror at the screen at how many times your email addresses show up in leaked data. Don't feel bad. My passwords have been stolen in no less than seven hacks (Last.fm, Yahoo, Tumblr, Nexus Mods, Paddy Power, LinkedIn and Trellion, since you ask). And these are just the hacks that are known about. There's almost certainly plenty more that haven't come to light and possibly never will…

Just changing a hacked password won't keep you safe “Big deal,” you say. I followed Yahoo/Tumblr/LinkedIn's instructions and changed my password right away. Nothing happened. “Nothing happened yet” would possibly be more fitting. The trouble is that most people reuse their passwords, and hackers know this. There's software available that will almost instantly test the stolen email address and password combos in websites across the net. Once a sufficient bundle of working passwords for a site is found, they'll be sold in bulk on the dark web.

Your login information is pretty cheap Considering the havoc having your login details stolen can cause, it's pretty disappointing to learn how little someone has to pay for the information. Back in 2015, McAfee's Hidden Data Economy report revealed that while logins for bank accounts with a decent amount of money in could go for up to $700, your PayPal password could be had for as little as $20, and your Netflix password could be worth just 55 cents.

The impact can be worse than you think Despite all of this, there's a mindset that thinks “who cares?” If my account is hacked, the thinking goes, I'll just reset the password. Job done. It's not always as simple as that. On a recent episode of the Reply All podcast (an excellent show that delves deep into internet culture), the hosts discover a particularly underhand Uber hack, where one of the presenters was locked out of his account while someone in Russia continued to charge rides to him. Not only is Uber incredibly hard to get on the phone, when he finally managed to get through to somebody, they claimed his account had never existed, despite the money-sapping evidence to the contrary. Uber was eventually able to reclaim the account via a screengrab of the ride notification, pinning the journey to the thief, but that's not really the point: it took journalists asking questions for anything to be done. Most people don't have the resources to harangue Uber all day and night. And yes, this hack wasn't Uber, but down to a suspected reused password.

ANZAC Day March The Concert Band gave a magnificent performance at the ANZAC parade this year. The weather was kind and the band marched mostly without rain. They marched down St

Kilda road twice, the first time being accompanied by the school captains carrying the banner. Thank you to Mr Shannon for organising this event, to Mr Slater and Ms Glanville for performing with the band and to the parents for their support. We commend all the students for their hard work learning the music, for their regular attendance at rehearsals and for their resilience on the day.

Brass Soirée At the end of term 1, the brass students gave a concert to parents and friends in the Music Centre. All students performed very well, especially for so early in the year. A few of the highlights were a combined year 7 medley of songs, a beautiful trombone solo by Jackson Zhang and a final performance of the seniors playing the theme from Rocky. Well done to all students and thank you to Mrs Barkla for organising the event and giving up her time to attend.
