Page 1 Principal’s Report Vermont College News Excellence Integrity Responsibility Respect Tolerance BUILDING UPDATE Last week saw a major step in the construction of our new permanent modular $4.873 million building. I thank the school community for their tolerance during last week’s disruptions, particularly during pick up time at the end of the day, some forty plus trucks delivered 37 modules and other building materials for the new ‘C wing’. It was amazing to see a large building grow before our eyes over four days. Now with the roof on, work begins on the installation of exterior cladding, decking and the fit out of the interior. Possession date is scheduled for very early Term 3. The new construction will house 10 classrooms including 2 purpose built science rooms, 2 purpose built ICT rooms, 6 generalist classrooms, replacement student toilets, a Language faculty staffroom, an office for the Year 9 Student Managers, 2 new locker bays and a science storeroom. AWARD WINNER – WELL DONE In the previous newsletter, congratulations went to Indigo-Rose Danes and Zara Nazikian who had both been selected in the TOPshots showcase at Monash Gallery of Art. TOPshots recognises excellence in photo media artwork produced across VCE - Studio Art, Art and Media, as well the International Baccalaureate - Visual Arts. Both Indigo-Rose and Zara studied VCE Studio Arts 3 & 4 last year working in various art forms including photography to explore their year-long artistic explorations. At the official TopSHOTS opening at the Monash Gallery of Art on Saturday Indigo-Rose Danes was awarded with an Honourable Mention for her photography (see photo). Well done Indigo-Rose this is a great achievement and thanks to her teacher, Ms Kelly Stals, for attending the opening and supporting the students involved. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT - Continued

SCHOOL BUSES There has been a major concern with the amount of students getting on the school buses in the main driveway each afternoon who do not tap on. Also on occasion when a staff member has stood beside the MYKI machine many students either have no MYKI card with them or they possess an invalid card i.e. no money on the card. Can parents/guardians please ensure that their child is using the card correctly by tapping on and that the card is topped up and valid. TAX DEDUCTIBLE BUILDING AND LIBRARY FUNDS As tax time is approaching, parents/guardians are reminded that donations to Vermont Secondary College’s Library Fund and Building Fund are Tax Deductible and the College welcomes donations of any size. Whilst we have received government funding for the new C wing complex the majority of this funding will go towards the building itself. The college will need to provide the extra funding for furniture, heating/cooling units, overhead projectors and computers for the new science and ICT rooms and the other 6 generalist classrooms within the complex. Direct deposits to: BSB 313-140; Account No: 12050892, Account Name: Vermont Secondary College. Please use your child’s student code as the identifier. All money raised is used to enhance facilities for your student/s. Receipts will be forwarded to you for tax purposes. VSC MID-YEAR REPORT WRITING DAY – FRIDAY 14 JUNE 2019—STUDENT FREE DAY Parents/guardians are also reminded that Friday 14th June is a pupil free day. Vermont Secondary College will be using the day as an Assessment and Report Writing Day and students in Years 7 – 12 are not required at school. VCE SENIOR SOCIAL - FRIDAY 14 JUNE 2019 The college will again hold its annual VCE Senior Social commencing at 7:00pm and concluding at 11:30pm at L'Unica on Parkville, 476 Brunswick Road Parkville. Parents who are collecting students from the event are requested to arrive well in time for a prompt departure at the conclusion of the evening, mindful of the distance of the venue. Your consideration and punctuality would be greatly appreciated. Parents must arrange for the collection of students between 11:30 and 11:45pm. Students who are not picked up by 12 midnight will be sent home in a taxi at their own expense. Further students and guests are strongly advised to have a warm coat to wear to and from the social. It is to be remembered that many senior students are under the age of 18 and therefore activities such as ‘after parties’ are not endorsed by the college. The wellbeing and safety of your child is of paramount importance and my recommendation would be that all students return to the family home following the social to a fully supervised adult environment. SEMESTER TWO STARTS MONDAY 17 JUNE, 2019 Reminder to parents/guardians and students that the whole school (Years 7 – 12) moves into the second semester in the last two weeks of this term starting on Monday the 17th June. 2:30PM FINISH - FRIDAY 28 JUNE, 2019 A reminder to the school community that on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28th June, we have a 2:30pm finish. Term 3 begins on Monday the 15th July, ending Friday 20th September. CAREERS FAST TRACK PROGRAM All year 10 students will be participating in the Careers Fast Track program (CFT) which forms part of their personal learning and career pathway planning. It provides information on each student’s preference for further study, career and work plus offers advice on how to learn and study more effectively to get the best out of their education. All students have been sent the link to complete the following online quizzes:

CFT is a three stage process which must be followed sequentially: Stage 1 - Completion of online quizzes > creates an individual CFT Portfolio Stage 2 - Read and refine Careers Fast Track Portfolio in preparation for interview Stage 3 - Individual counselling session with a CFT counsellor – Parents welcome to attend Commencing: 13th June Concluding: 27th June Please check with your young person if they have completed Stage 1 and recorded their interview date and period.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT ELECTION DAY BBQ & BOOK SALE Our thanks go to the big team that made our election day BBQ, cake and book sale possible – the range of cakes was spectacular and most were snapped up very quickly. Special thanks go to our Coordinator Di Eaves and her trusty companions Liam and Isabella, the rest of the 6am crew (Rohan Holliday, Shaun Gillespie and Josh Chia), Sam Holland for managing the book sale and our many volunteers on the BBQs: Jo Danes, Jenny Smith, Matthew Phillips, Mandy Jarvis, Lyn Ellis, Veronica Reid and the whole Abbott family (Deb, Mark and the kids). SPECIAL MENTION MUST GO TO OUR COLLEGE HEAD CLEANER, JOSH CHIA Josh continues to support the college in a range of ways well beyond his role; as he likes to remind us, VSC is his school too! Sadly, under current DET policy, we will have to cease employing him at the end of his current contract in June 2020, and move to a contract with a larger cleaning company that will unlikely (based on feedback from other schools) give us the level of service and commitment that Josh and his team provide. We, and especially Mike Stevens, are exploring all avenues to avoid this happening.

WOOLWORTHS ‘EARN & LEARN’ IS ON NOW The VSCCA is collecting for this college fundraiser. Last year it was a very successful campaign for VSC, so please get on-board again. Collection boxes are located outside Reception and in the Year 7 Centre foyer. VSC Earn & Learn collection boxes are located at the following Woolworths stores:

WINTER IS HERE – WARM, DRY SPACES AND UNIFORM A reminder to students and parents about college expectations and student rights and responsibilities:

Students may wear scarves, but they should be plain styles in either black, navy or white

Beanies are NOT to be worn

Students retain a choice in which uniform items they wear, but must wear them correctly – black t-shirts or skivvies, hoodies etc. are not to be worn.

Students may wear a plain white long-sleeved t-shirt under their uniform shirt, but they must then either wear the long-sleeved shirt, or leave their jumper or jacket on!

Students may eat indoors in designated areas, but should respect the spaces by keeping them clean and tidy. One frustration for us when asking students why they are wearing a hoody is their explanation that ‘they are cold’, but they don’t have the college jumper. ASSESSMENT TIME IS HERE With classes preparing for or undertaking exams, tests, Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) or School Assessed Coursework (SACs), it is a good time to remind all families of the importance of ongoing study and careful time management. Students should be developing and following study schedules, revising notes, completing drafts or practice papers, and, above all, seeing their teachers to discuss concerns and to clarify work and expectations.

Students can help to reduce their own ‘assessment stress’ by ensuring they have done their utmost to be prepared for assessments, are well rested, and have balanced outside responsibilities (like the number an duration of shifts if they have part-time work). VSC COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION – next meeting 7pm on Wednesday 5th June QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY LONG WEEKEND – MONDAY 10TH JUNE A reminder to families that the school will be closed Monday 10th June.

YEAR 7 REPORT Term 2 has involved students in many activities both in and outside of class. Inter-House Lunchtime Netball & Soccer competitions were great fun. Below are students from Hotham after a resounding victory led by Mr Cullen. Student participation adds points for the Annual House Cup. Here are some reflections from participants: “It was fun to play sports that I enjoy against other Houses”. Jenna-Netball. “I think it was fun because I blocked a goal and we won!!” Xavier- Soccer. “ I tried a sport that I have never played before and I really enjoyed it. I am now thinking of joining a club.” Bianca- Netball.

“At times, both girls and boys were in the same team, everyone played in a competitive and fun way. I would also like to thank

Mr.Quinn for being our soccer referee”. Mr.Duiveman.

Student Managers have been visiting Form Groups and involving students in SEL sessions: Social and Emotional Learning

sessions, whereby students reflect as a group and discuss if group dynamics are working well and maybe not so well. Inclusion

and respect were key behaviours discussed. From the sessions, goals are set and a sense of unity is formed to put them into

practice.

Also, during lunchtimes students are able to borrow sport equipment, we would like to see more students involved in

Lunchtime Activities. Watch this space: we are in the process of purchasing more board and card games for students to play

with during recess and lunchtimes in N6 & N7. We are encouraging students to get off their iPads and socialise and interact with

each other more.

On the 16th of May 2019, students from the Year 10 Geography Elective ‘Big Picture” were fortunate enough to travel to the Yarra Ranges. As part of the course the students study the positives and negatives surrounding conservation of animals. At Healesville Sanctuary, students got to observe animal species including those which are critically endangered. They monitored how they were cared for and the environment in and around their enclosures. The weather on the day was outstanding and many of the students managed to see most of the species on display – even though there are more than 200! Following this experience, the students will write a report using the data they collected.

AUTUMN CONCERT The Autumn Concert was yet again a tremendous success. This concert showcased all the schools larger ensembles, involving over 200 students, the instrumental music staff, other teachers and the Music Support Group. There were many highlights and it was exciting to hear our new students perform for the first time. A huge thank you to all parents and staff who attended the concert and showed their support for our Music Program.

VCE RECITAL The VCE Unit 1 & 3 students had their assessment recital last week. Students were required to perform two works, demonstrating stylistic differences. Ms Clark was accompanied by Mr Dane Sorensen from Ringwood Secondary College to assess the students and provide feedback on their performances. All students performed very well, providing the audience with a highly enjoyable evening. .

NORTH EAST VICTORIAN REGION CONCERT The annual NEVR Concert titles ‘Destinations’ was held on Tuesday at Hamer Hall. Vermont Secondary College was well represented with 20 students involved across five different ensembles. The students had to attend two long rehearsals with their ensemble and go into a sound check on Tuesday. Vermont music staff were also well represented with Sally Barkla, Anthony Foon, Josh Licht, Kim Green & Khristian Mizzi accompanying students, tutoring, ushering and conducting. This concert provided a valuable musical experience for all students involved and a wonderful listening experience for the audience.

OPEN MIC For the second time this year, students in year 9-10 have hosted and organised the Vermont Open Mic night. A lovely, intimate night of solo/duo and trio performances from some of our very talented students showcasing pieces they have worked on for this term. We’d like to thank Mr. Dion Beaugalhall, Ms. Emma Avery and Ms. Kim Green for helping with the evening. Congratulations Felicity Seigenthaler, Charli Culliver, Chantelle Cottren and Ruby Frostick for a wonderful night. We look forward to the next one

We had rainbow decorations, ribbons and lollies as we listened to our guest speaker Sam talk about why we must look out for all on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. All students are welcome to join the SAFER group every week 1 Thursday lunch. We have recently changed venues to the Library, so please come and join us :)

LONE PINE UPDATE

LONE PINE UPDATE We are pleased to report to the school community that the Lone Pine (Aleppo) tree that was planted in 2015 to commemorate the centenary of Anzac Day has indeed grown and continues to thrive in its place in front of the school, near the flag poles. It is now 330 centimetres tall having grown an incredible 80 centimetres in 12 months. The trunk's girth is now 45 centimetres, last year it was 32 centimetres. Our Lone Pine tree is a descendent of the Australian War Memorial tree that was planted from seeds from pine cone that was sent to Australia from Gallipoli. Library Staff
