Flying by the seat of my pants

“Please accept our apologies for the accidental spillage to your clothing on our service today,” is the wording on the dry cleaning form I was handed byacabincrewmemberonmyflightto London. Moments prior, I attempted to retrieve a pillow from the overhead bin and in the course of standing up, I found myself stuck to the seat. It seems for several hours I had been sitting on a chewed glob of gum. In pondering a most awkward maneuver to become unstuck from my cushion, I pushed my light on the arm-rest for assistance. Once I had explained myplight, theflightattendantkindlytold me when I get to London, put my

pants in the freezer and the gum will be easier to remove once frozen. Great idea that is...once I walk through the third busiest airport in the world self-consciously aware I have an abundance of white gum on the whole backside of my black pants. Classy entrance into England, I would say. Ironically, the whole purpose of my trip was to get unstuck. Regroup. Make a plan. Chart a course. Get organized. For far too long I had been stuck in the complicated art of catching up to yesterday. Working in some form of controlled turmoil. Flying by the seat of my pants. (This expression is aviation based and from what I know, is British. Gofigure.Regardlessofitsorigin, inbusiness it is not a very good plan.) Yet, I am not good at planning. And in my inability to stick to such, I noticed a pattern. I love the idea of planning, but I’ve been forcing myself to be a planner when that isn’t really my nature. I get distracted by the nuances along the way that propel me from one project to another. I don’t like things to be too scheduled, because what if I change my mind? And when it comes to creativity, I like to try different visual elements, and see what inspires me the

most, and go from there. Needless to say, this is not the most effective way to run a business. There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going, and on this nine hour flightIhadampletimetosortthingsout. I clearly saw the need to begin delegating the tasks I am not good at, to others who are. After all, I was fortu-nate to work with a dynamic team of talented people who could bring fresh perspective, newness of thought, posi-tive energy, solution to challenges, (and a plan)...to the plan. I simply needed to ask. They have been there all the time. I had been the one holding back. I suddenly knew when I returned from this trip, I was going to be em-barking on a whole new exciting busi-ness journey, complete with effective teamwork of individuals harmonizing contributions and talent towards a com-mon goal. It was time. I was ready. And grateful. And until then, I decided to sitback, relaxandenjoytheflight.Sounded like a perfect plan. After all, I was stuck to my seat.

From 2006-2010, Distracted Driving contributed to

36.8% of traffic fatalities in Grant County,

38.1% in Adams County and 25% in Lincoln County

(Washington Traffic Safety Commission).

48.4% of traffic fatalities in Grant County

If “disregard for the safety ofothers” can be proven,

then charges can be brought forth.

It is important for drivers to know that“intention” does not matter whenbringing forth vehicular assault or

vehicular homicide charges. For example,if a driver is texting and hits another car and

causes a fatality, the fact that it wasunintentional has no bearing on the driver

being charged with vehicular homicide.

An Open Lett er from Sheriff Tom Jones Addressing his positi on on the second amendmentand protecti ng our citi zens

Citizens and Residents of Grant County: Just as all of you have, I, too, have watched media coverage

wherefellowcitizenshavebeeninjuredorkilledinfirearms-relatedincidents. Regardless of how large or small the incident, or whether if happens in a home, a shopping mall, a movie theater, college or school, the results are always tragic. I am saddened by what I have seen across our great country, as I am sure you are, too. I have received a lot of correspondence and concerns from the citizens of Grant County asking what my position is regarding the proposed gun law changes. Because I consider myself a pro-Second Amendment Sheriff, this is a very emotional and important topic for me. I also feel that it is important to let you, the citizens, know where I stand. Iamafirmbelieverthattherootcauseofournation’sincidentsinvolvingfirearmsisnottheweaponused.Thefocusandtheresponsibility for these shootings should be on the violent and disturbed people who do the shootings. The weapon should not be the focus; the focus should be the mental stability and intent of the person handling the weapon. As your County Sheriff, I am elected by you, the people, to uphold the laws and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Washington. Those constitutions allow law-abiding citizens a fundamental right to keep and bear arms. I do not believe those rights should be infringed upon, nor do I believe that infringing on those rights is an answer to solving the nation’s firearmsconcerns.IwouldliketomakeitclearthatIopposethosewhowouldtryandtakeawaytheserights.I,asyourSheriff,support the citizens of this county against unconstitutional attempts to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. I do believe, and strongly advocate for, legislation that calls for improved background checks for gun buyers at stores, gun shows and private sales. Also, measures and funding to verify who can legally own guns; provide funding, improved access and quality of mental healthcare; and building partnerships across communities and the nation to help reduce gun violence. This will not be a simple task, and will require the support and effort of legislators and citizens throughout our country. It is my honor to serve as your County Sheriff for the past two years. Although we are in trying times and some perceive our rightsascitizenarebeingtested,IcantellyouwithconfidencethatIwillcontinuetoworkhardonreducingcrimeinourcountyas well as protect the rights of the citizens I have been sworn to protect. I ask and encourage all citizens of Grant County to help me protect both the lives of others and protect our legal rights and freedoms which our constitutions provide.

Tom Jones Grant County Sheriff

We are working to make Grant County an even safer place to live, work and raise our families. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have.

Jacket by Romeo Gigli ...love at fi rst sightArticle/ShAwN ERIN

Dressing in the morning is my favorite part of the day. Never having been one tosetoutanoutfitthenightbefore, mayhemensuesforagoodportionofthemorning after the last-snooze to out-the-door. Most mornings a messy drama

between myself and my clothes softly heaps and gathers on every surface of my room until a concord is reached in the material and the mirror. Fashion is romance for me. We can be whoever we want, belong with anyone, depending on the clothes we wear. We are walls of the MOMA, the tastiest hook in the ocean, we are what we wear! This isthefirstcolumnIwriteatmynewoccupation, myveryownclothingretailstore! From conception to manifestation the road to now was short and electric. Recently, after a turn in my story I moved to Moses Lake, WA to be with my family. I hadtofindajobbutIwouldn’tworkforBurgerKingandIdidn’twanttobeacarpetroller-thosepeoplewhositinofficechairsandrollfromonesideoftheircubicletothe other. It was an organic conception from clothes horse to clothes consignor; easy to findaphysicalspaceformystore,anameasanidentity,acommunityforsupportandthefirstitemstosell.RollingStoneBoutiqueismybaby,mymarriageandmyplaceofrefuge. ThefirstdayonthejobIwaspricingitemstosellanditwasloveatfirstsightfor me and a jacket by Romeo Gigli. ‘Romeo, Romeo’ a most famous character in the collective tragedy of love! I giggled and Googled my new Romeo and discovered this story. My Gigli was the son of a book collector and an Italian contessa, orphaned at 18 when his father followed his mother into the afterlife only months apart. He traveled the world for the next decade, selling his father’s books to buy tickets and textiles from Asian, Africa, South America and beyond. His career in fashion began when he landed in Studio 54, New York City in the 70’s. Amongst these iconic and rich characters he learned to adapt the casual styles of hippies in India, buskers in the streets of Amsterdam, and the arguably most beautiful humans of Brazil, into high-fashion. Gigli becomes human again in this fairytale when he realizes his wife, his sister-in-law and a man whose relationship with both these women is only vaguely definedinthenarrative, usurpedhisbusinessandforcedhimtoleavehislongtimebusiness center in Milan. Gigli rejected the big shoulders and structure of the 80’s and created whimsical multi-layered and asymmetrical skirts and dresses, and tunics of metallic silk reminiscent of byzantine royals. He has worked through the years to restore ownership and direction of his brand, his name. The man has returned to the runways with collections of the still romantic not-so-structured type-cast characters that continue to wander the silk wrap-around roads of Asia, Africa and South America. The women’s styles are soft and strong and the men’s suits and ties look like the only one they’ve ever worn or have care to wear. The emerald green velvet jacket that hangs on the mannequin in my store is gorgeous. The collar pops up from the subtly gathered shoulders, and the bottom flaresoutjustenoughtoknowitsfashionandnotamissedstitch.Aclassiclovestorybetween fashion and its Romeo. Heart health Are you at risk of Cardiovascular disease?Article/JONAThAN P. hENKE, MPh, PA-C

F ebruary is “National Heart Health Month”. I feel a very personal connection with this subject. On March 20th of 2009, at age 69, my Dad suddenly collapsed

from a cardiac arrest, and passed away. There was no time to prepare, no goodbyes. It happened as he and Mom were starting their day, and Dad was checking his emails. Here was a guy who had no symptoms, a six-pack of abs, could ride his bike 15 miles at a time, and all of his friends said he was the rolemodelforthemwhenitcametofitnessandhealth. In our Weight Loss Challenge classes, when we discuss Heart Health, Jon and I take this topic very seriously. We knowfromfirst-handexperiencehowimportantitis.How many of you are aware that 1 in 4 people suffer from some form of heart disease, and that it causes 2 out of every 5 deaths. Cardiovascular disease has been the number one cause of death since 1900 and is the number 1 killer of men AND women. In fact, women are more likely to die from heart disease than any other mortality.

Risk factors for heart disease include but aren’t limited to: • Smoking(smokershavetwicetheriskasnon-smokers)• Highcholesterol;yourliverproducesallthecholesterol

you need.• Highbloodpressure:theleadingcauseofstroke,heart

Every risk factor you have now doubles your risk of developing heart disease. Therefore, the more risk factors you

possess, the more likely you are to become a cardiac patient. For example, if you smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and high cholesterol (this is not even taking into account a positive family history), you now have 64 times the risk of developing serious heart conditions.

Topping this off, on average of 60% of men and women who died suddenly of cardiovascular disease had no prior symptoms. So, what preventive measure can be taken? Of course there is the obvious…proper diet and exercise, limiting stress in one’s life…you know, the usual recommendations that you hear. But, for a moment, let’s take a look at additional supplementationthatcandefinitelyhelpinprotectingthebody from cardiovascular demise. Medicine, and he won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 for his research and work with Nitric Oxide. He is the author of the book, “NO More Heart Disease.” Dr. Ignarro discovered that Nitric Oxide (NO) is naturally produced by the cells within blood vessels, and is the driving force behind cellular nutrition. Damage to your cells due to obesity, hypertension, poor diet, and lack of exercise result in deficientNOproductionandincreasedriskofcardiovasculardisease.OtherfindingsaboutNOare:

To help remedy these issues, Dr. Ignarro developed a product called “Niteworks”, which contains the precursors to Nitric Oxide and thus help the body produce it. Incorporating Niteworks into a healthy diet may help to increase Nitric Oxide production. Niteworks is high in vitamin C and E which are beneficialantioxidantsknowntohelpprotectthecellsagainstfree radicals. Results of studies of people who regularly consume Niteworks show:

When I think back to my Dad, I always wonder if he may have lived longer if he had been using the supplements Herbalife has to offer. Although he seemed so healthy on the outside, eating well and always exercising, he did have a positive family history of heart disease. Upon autopsy, it was discovered that he had an enlarged heart with thin walls, which would have led him down the path of congestive heart failure, along with partially blocked coronary arteries. How on earth did he always out-perform his athletic friends and not have the symptoms of such extensive heart disease? We will never know. If you are concerned about your risk of cardiovascular disease and would like to look into preventive supplementation, come visit us at Synergy. Or, if you know people who could benefitfromthisproduct, pleasesendthemourway…whoknows, you might help save a life.

N o. Although it would be necessary to eat your vegetables raw in order to prevent any loss of nutrients whatsoever, here’s my thinking to this

commonly asked question: In the case of some vegetables, cooking can actually enhance the variety of nutrients that get released inside our digestive tract. The cooking of onions and garlic are good examples. Onions and garlic are both members of the Allium family of vegetables. Most vegetables in this family have unusual amounts of sulfur-containing compounds that can help protect our health. Heat can actually increase the variety of sulfur-containing substances found in onions and garlic. Cooking each food properly is essential:Even 30 seconds in steam will alter the nutrient composition of a vegetable and will cause some loss of nutrients. However, when the exposure to steam happens for such a short time, this loss of nutrients is minimal and is not a problem. To avoid unnecessary nutrient loss, cooking each

food properly is absolutely essential. Five extra minutes of cooking can make an enormous difference in the nutritional quality of a meal. Excessive cooking equals nutrient loss: The traditional rules about heat, water, time, and nutrient loss are all true. The longer a food is exposed to heat, the greater its nutrient loss. Boiling foods results in more nutrient loss than steaming. The lower nutrient loss from steaming is the main reason I so often recommended this. A very important factor to consider when evaluating the nutritional quality of the food is; how fresh is the raw vegetable?Significantnutrientlossoccursinrawvegetablesif they have been picked too long before they are eaten and have been exposed too long to light and air. How well will you chew the raw vegetables before swallowing them? When a food is not cooked, the body depends much more heavily upon chewing to help prepare the vegetable for digestion. Cooking a vegetable, just one minute, can enhance its digestibility. I encourage you to enjoy both raw and cooked vegetables in your daily foods. By chewing well and

savoring the tastes and textures of your raw food and by following my cooking suggestions that make

the most of each food’s unique cooking requirements, you will get optimal nutritionalbenefitsfromboth!

Do I have to eat my vegetables raw to att ain the full nutriti onal benefi t of the food?

A Family Business where the Business is FamilyArticle/VENUE MAGAZINE (ADAPTED ARTICLE BY BEN GETZ)

I t might seem, especially in smaller towns, that a multi-business owning family may be trying to establish a commercial ‘empire’. Empires require Emperors and

subjects…yet nothing is further from the truth when looking at the Hamilton’s of Moses Lake. Their businesses include Michael’s on the Lake, Elements, Michael’s Market & Bistro and the adjoining kitchen store, and now introducing Rock Top Burgers and Brew. Savvy business folk, yes…but something more is present that make the Hamilton’s businesses thrive; the people they employ. ‘Employees’ seems to be less than descriptive enough, as the Hamilton’s truly feel that all of their 100+ staff members, (with an anticipated 50+ more at Rock Top) are more like part of their extended family. A biological family can be diverse and have many differences, but at the end of the day a good family is always there for each other. Such is the case in the family of the Hamilton staff. Mike Hamilton stresses that it is the combination of all the ‘employees’ combined years of experience and constantly bringing new ideas to the table that make all the businesses a success. “Things (in this business) are always changing and you

can’t just sit and keep doing the same thing, you need to learn to change quickly and not be afraid”, shares Michael Hamilton. He goes on to point out the staff is more than just a team, more like a ‘functional family’, daily striving for excellence in the many minute details to hopefully make for a pleasant experience to all patrons, local and visitor alike. Casting the spotlight on just a few of their key staff members, it highlights a long and successful history of growth in the Hamilton family’s businesses. Michael Stevens, started with Michael’s on the Lake as a 15 year old dishwasher. Through his hard work and decades of dedication, he is the general manager and partner at Michael’s Market and Bistro.

What’s your take on a gourmet burger?

A gourmet burger to me is a burger using ingredients that are the freshest and local when ever possible of the best possible quality available. This would include each burger having its ownflavorswithdifferentcheeses,saucesandseasoningtogiveeachoneasignatureflavorandfuntwist.-Mike

A “gourmet” burger should be simple, recognizable and be hand made with the highest quality ingredients available. A gourmetburgershouldnothavea“onesizefitsall”approachwhen it comes to sauce, cheese, bun or any other ingredient for that matter. Each burger has been developed to have a veryuniqueflavorprofilethatwillseparateitfromtherestof the menu. We have spent a huge amount of time and have eatenametrictonofsamplestodeterminingwhatsize, flavorand texture we want for our hamburger patties, toasted buns, fresh produce and french fries. - Joe

How many perfect combinations will I have to choose from?

Our burger section of the menu will include 20 different burgers with each one having signature ingredients, form jalapenos, to grilled onions, blue cheese, special buns, fresh turkey patties, veggies patties, fresh chicken and each one with a creative and fun name . - Mike

What’s to drink?

Ourdrinkmenuwillbeextensivewithflavoredicetea, flavoredlemonades, soft drinks and juices, smoothies, Then our draft beerswithlotsoflocalflavors, alongwithafullspiritssectionwith a fun exotic section of libations.

Why the name Rock Top?

The rock top name came from our area of rock cliffs and basalt rock.

How do you describe the environment?

The environment will be family friendly with warm colors and different texture for the decor, The walls on the inside will be a combinations of metals, rocks and wood, with unique lighting.

Can I bring my whole family?

This is a family friendly environment, catering to all ages, we will have a complete menu catering to kids and family. With outsidedecksandfireplaces.RockTopwillbeagreatchoicefor all your family gatherings as well as just hanging out with friends.

There are questi ons being asked all over town about our new place for good eats, so we went to Michael hamilton (and Chef Joe) for some answers. The rest of the story will be

relished when you take your fi rst bite of a ROCK TOP gourmet burger.

Dana Andrade, (who some may still remember from Dana’s Café), has over 36 years of experience in the business both with the Hamilton’s and on her own. As the assistant general manager at Michael’s Market and Bistro, Mike and Jordan both say her experience and dedication are invaluable. And let’s not forget Melissa Sloan, who brings a decade and more of experience working in the kitchen store business (from the ‘Home Stretch’), and who manages the kitchen store located in Michael’s Market and Bistro. She has added much to their success. Brian Studniski has worked on the team at Michael’s on the Lake since early 2005 as a lead server. He has extensive hospitality experience in hotels and restaurant management. Since his promotion to assistant general manager in late 2011, when Michael Stevens went to the Bistro full time, he has done a phenomenal job managing the front of the house operations. Joe LaRosee joined the Hamilton team in July 2011, and has worked his way to the master of creativity in the kitchen as executive chef. He brings with him 21 years of restaurant experience and food knowledge. His passion for good, quality food and his desire to keep learning, has helped keep the Michael’s on the Lake menu fresh. He has been instrumental in ideas and concepts for the menu of Rock Top Burgers and Brew. Matt Nelson is Joe’s right hand in the kitchen. As sous chef Matt has been with Michael’s on the Lake since late 2004. He brings 15+ years in the restaurant industry. His organization andkitchenskillshelpskeepthekitchenflowingandreadyat all times. He is a wealth of knowledge and the go to guy if anything is needed. Matt is truly a team player.

For everything the Hamilton’s may get out of their businesses, they believe that giving back to the community is the primary way to make this town a better place to work and live for all families. The giving attitude that the entire

Hamiltonfamilyhasisreflectedbythestaffatalloftheirbusinesses. Generously participating in serving the community for a number of years through such events as Relay for Life, they know that the individuals and families in the community are what make them a success, so you must ‘give back’. They have and continue to support the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Spring Festival, Moses Lake Christian School, and the City Wide Clean Up to mention a few. With all the details of overseeing a number of businesses and their involvement in many catering activities, you may wonder if the Hamilton’s ever get time for themselves to pursue hobbies or other interests. Both Michael and Jordan answer yes…though there is neverenoughtime.Whattheydofindtimefor each week is to still have a sit down, family dinner together, maintaining that this is much more than just a ‘family business’ partnership. To everyone in the community they serve, a warm invite is extended to relax and enjoy something refreshing or savory, be treated with kindness and excellence, served with care and... welcomed to the family.

A Family Business – continued from page 32

“We have leaned on our staff during the construction of Rock Top and are continuing to do so. They are all very instrumental in

getting it put together and we feel the team we have is what makes it possible to open. Without all of the knowledge, motivation and talent we just couldn’t get it done by ourselves.” – Jordan Hamilton.

Be Bright!LED increases collagen and elasticity, diminishes the appear-ance of lines and wrinkles, improves the appearance of skin texture and color, improves sun damaged skin and reduces pore size, promotes circulation to the skin, helps to reduce redness and irritation. This is a constant, non-invasive light that reduces the appearance of damaged skin tissue without heat, without pain and without risk.

Lift and Firm!Microcurrent is a noninvasive treatment that actually lifts and firms your facial and neck muscles. Positive and negative current alternates back and forth between two probes while your muscles are being held in place and lifted for a certain number of counts. Through this process the muscles are firming and lifting. It is also creating collagen and elasticity. When

muscles sag during the aging process, it creates more promi-nent vertical lines. When muscles contract and are firmer, the vertical lines seem to be less noticeable and softer. Try gently pushing your face up with you fingertips around your mouth or eyes and see what happens to your vertical lines…

Be Soft!Old dead skin cells sit on the skins surface which clog pores and block the entrance for moisture and hydration. Microderm-abrasion takes off the skins old cells and leaves your skin ready for many kinds of skin therapies; mainly microcurrent, LED and hydration. This process is non-painful and your skin is left very smooth. Thank goodness for the forward thinking technology of today that can help us without having to actually have surgery! cccccGypsy Soul A true American storyArticle/VENUE MAGAZINE

Y ou won’t want to miss this superb performance by Cilette Swann, lyricist and singer, born in Canada and of South African and Irish heritage and Roman

Morykit, composer musician and producer, born in England and of Ukrainian and Italian heritage. The combined talents of this very special couple are absolutely amazing. Many say the sound is like a cross between Sheryl Crow and Eva Cassidy meets Coldplay and Fleetwood Mac. Back In 1990, Cilette Swann and Roman Morykit were both searching for something. Imagine being an American in Paris learning to sing in French, phonetically. That’s how Cilette began her career, singing in Paris jazz clubs. Imagine living in London, being signed to major recording contract with A&M Records, and watching it fall out from under you, mid-recording. That’s how Roman found himself needing a change. Both werefeelingcreativelystifledandthroughaseriesoflife’scoincidences, they found each other in Edinburgh, Scotland. Recognizing a musical kinship, they started writing songs together and Gypsy Soul was born. Their musical relationship blossomed into love and the two married in November 1991. Earlierthatyear, onaflightbacktoScotlandaftervisitingCilette’s family in the US, the pair met a Los Angeles movie producer. After chatting about the industry, they ended up buying her a train ticket as she had no local currency. Little did they know that this gesture would result in her setting up numerous meetings with Cannon Pictures and others, which inspired a move to LA. For the next few years they wrote more songs and cultivated their sound playing in LA venues such as The TroubadourandLunaPark.Thenwiththefinancialsupportoffriends and family, they decided to record their debut CD, “Test Of Time” in 1995. While in the studio, Cilette was working for the French camera company, Aaton who were so impressed with the music, that they offered equipment - free of charge - to produce a music video. With 14 volunteers and donations from other LA production companies, Cilette’s assistant, a budding filmmaker, directedtheband’sfirstvideoforthesingle,SilentTears. Inspired by the duo’s passion, a friend, Michael Eames ofPENMusicGroup,Inc.,financedthepressingofthefirst1000 CDs. Armed with their audio and visual wares, the duo started to tour and attracted the attention of a small independent

record company. They released the CD nationally and Silent Tears hit the Top 40 AC radio charts with artists such as Celine Dion and Brian Adams. However, just as the single was taking off, the record company ran out of money and the duo’s career was stalled. Again, friends and family supported the band as they sat out the remainder of their contract for a year and wrote more songs. Roman and Cilette then made the decision to start their own record company, marking the birth of Off The Beaten

Track Recordings. They secured national distribution and released their sophomore effort,“Sanctuary.” Since that time, Gypsy Soul has released ten albums along with a live DVD recorded at the Triple Door in Seattle. They have sold over 1.5 million downloads worldwide as well as over 120,000 CDs in the US alone. Michael Eames, who has now been their publisher for over 15 years, has licensed their music in TV shows and movies which have aired over all over the world. Besides worldwide digital release and physical release in the US, the duo’s recordings have also been physically issued in Korea,SouthAfricaandJapan,(whereSilentTearswaschosenas the theme to a popular TV show). In 2008, Gypsy Soul’s fans donated over $27,000 in funding for the duo’s 9th CD, “Wanderlust.” Roman and Cilette continue to tour the Western States and Europe, playing venues from coffee houses to art and wine festivals and theaters that seat anywhere from 200 to 2000 people. Despite their unique, multicultural sound, the duo has managed to earn a Top 40 hit at AC Radio, a Top 5 hit in the International New Age charts and a Top 10 hit on the Folk DJ charts winning numerous independent music awards (including, Lilith Fair and Just Plain Folks) along the way. They have released 10 CDs and a live DVD and have sold over 1.5 million downloads worldwide and over 118,000 CDs nationally. Their music has aired all over the world on numerous TV shows including Felicity, Providence, Roswell, and movies including, After Sex starring Brooke Shields and

Q. What - or who - got your initial interest going in photography? How long ago did you begin?

A. When I was 11 years old I got to tag along with my big sister for her senior portrait session. Craig Morrison was the photographer and he was so patient

with me while I followed him like a puppy asking questions. I was so intrigued and watched very carefully how he was doing things. That night wegothomeandIaskedmymotherforhercameraandsomefilmandplayed around with it all night. Shortly after my mom gave me the one gift that little did she know would change my life forever, a Canon AE-1.AtthetimemyfamilyhadverylittlemoneysoanyfilmIgot,Iknew I had to use it wisely. I would go out on our farm and put myself in different lighting situations and see what I could do. I would have my little cousins “model” for me whenever they came to visit. In high school I took any art classes that I could, including Graphic Design and Annual Staff. My junior year I shot my brother’s senior pictures and

seeing them come to life in the dark room was my turning point. That is when I decided this is what I needed to do with my life.

Q. What were your first photographic experiences or experiments?

A. When I was in college at Spokane Falls for their Photography program I got

hiredformyveryfirstwedding.Iwas20yearsoldandterrified.IsetoutthelittleequipmentIhadatthetimeoutthenightbeforeandbought10rollsoffilm.Iwasabit intimidated and prayed the whole way there that I could pull it off. At one point IrememberthinkingtomyselfthatIwasnutstotakeonmyveryfirstweddingandto do it alone. Now looking back I know I was nuts thinking that was okay. When it was all said and done the bride and groom were very please with the images and thatgavemyselfalittleboostofconfidencethatIneededtokeepongoing. Q. How would you describe the work you do now? A. I think I would describe my work now as “in the moment” I love working with people. I love being around children and capturing their innocence. I love the way a recently engaged couple looks at each other and being able to look at an image and feel some sort of emotion from it. I love Boudoir sessions because every woman comestothesessionnervousandsomeeventerrifiedandleavefeelingbeautiful. To be able to make a woman feel beautiful in her own skin is a big accomplishment for me.

Q. When you approach subjects to shoot, how do you set about it? Do you chat and explain what you envision, or do you shoot first, ask questions later? A. I always prefer to discuss the session before. Everyone’s needs are different so I want to make sure we are on the same page. If their end goal is to have a coffee table custom album at the end of it I will have that in the back of my brain while I shoot because I want to tell more of a story as if they are wanting a 24’’ by 36’’ Gallery Wrap Canvas of the whole family for the living room. Q. What other photographer - old or new - inspires you the most? A.AsforoldphotographersdefinitelythelegendaryAnselAdams, he had the most amazing black and white landscape photographs.Heusedglassplatesandfiltersandlittlerallypainted with light. Beautiful.

For new/current photographers Annie Leibovitz, Sue Bryce and Jasmine Star. These women are all amazing in what they do and they each have their own way of doing it.

Q. What are you working on now and what are your ambitions for the future of your photography? A. Currently I am working on getting my Boudoir studio set up so that the client can have a place to come to. I also just came back not too long ago from shooting a wedding in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. I love traveling and being able to incorporatethatintomyjobisdefinitelyadream.

S omewhere I read that the English language has more words than any other language. This may or may not be true but we certainly do not hesitate to appropriate

words from other languages (having learned French I can state categorically that other languages also appropriate new words – although perhaps not quite as readily as we Americans). We have taken many French words into our language (dèjá vu, gauche, and sang froid spring readily to mind) and in particular wine making has a fair number of French words. This is because the British Isles never had a large wine making tradition. There are wineries in England today and there have been wineries throughout the centuries but these tend to be small efforts. Just as it easier to grow grapes in Central Washington than in Western Washington, so it is easier to grow grapes in France than it is in England. Thus we learned winemaking from the French - since they were right across the Channel - and thus we use many French terms in winemaking. Terroir is a French word and is an important concept in the wineworld.Ineffect, grapes(likemostcrops)areinfluencedby the environment they grow in. In other words there will beflavordifferences-causedbytheenvironment-betweena Yakima Valley Merlot and an Ancient Lakes Merlot. The French coined a term for this and the term is of course terroir. TerroirisadifficultwordtopronounceandImostoften

hear it mispronounced as ‘terror’ (obviously one should not discuss wine terroir while waiting to board a plane). To pronounceitastheFrenchwouldisratherdifficultastheyrolltheir R’s in the back of their throats. I cannot think of a word that rhymes with the ‘oir’ part but it is like ‘are’ with a ‘w’ in front, so, ‘tear-w-are’ (or ‘war’ with the ‘ar’ part pronounced ‘are’) is about the best I can do. TheEuropeansbelieveratherfirmlythatsoilisthefundamentalflavorcomponentinterroir.Ilearnedhowtomake wine in Europe and it never occurred to me to question this concept since it was always stated as absolute fact. Upon my return to Washington one of the jobs I applied for was at Chateau Ste Michelle. During the job interview with the winemakerIsaidsomethingaboutsoilflavoringthewineandhepromptlysaid,“Oh,youbelieveinsoilflavor.”Whereuponhe called his head viticulturist into the room and this individual had written his PhD thesis on the concept that soil does not impartflavortowine. Said viticulturist was the wonderful Dr. Wade Wolf, and in essence what he was saying is that it is the micro-climate that makesthedifferenceinflavorratherthanthesoil.Atthetimewhetherornotthesoilflavorswineornotdidnotmattertomesince neither of us were disputing the existence of terroir. However since then my ideas of how terroir works have undergonesomeevolution.Thefirstcomponentofterroir

is of course is the micro-climate. This is made up of slope orientation and correspondingly how the vineyard site is struck by the sun, cloud cover, the wind, and so forth. Second, soilisafactorbutperhapsnotasaflavoringagent.Insteaditisthestructureofthesoilthatinfluencesthegrapevine’s ability to grow. In other words roots will react differently to a sandy soil than to heavy clay soil and thus berry composition will be different in the two cases. I cannot imagine Dr. Wolf disagreeing with this concept. Lastly as the individual grape berries begin to ripen they develop a waxy outer covering. I believe this waxy coating absorbs odors. This idea came to me when I read articles aboutwinemadefromvineyardsnearCaliforniawildfires.Various attempts were unsuccessful at removing ‘smoke taint’ from wine made from these grapes. In the southern Rhone region of France they believe that wild thyme growing in the hills around their vineyards flavorstheirwines.HereatWhiteHeronwebelievethatthesagebrushthatsurroundsourvineyardsflavorsourwine.Sagebrush is certainly part of our terroir.
