Hit it!
For years my children have complained to me about how slow I drive my car. Also, I recall my friends making very clear comments about not wanting to car pool anywhere if I am the driver, as they would prefer to get there. I have never been one for travel-ing at a high rate of speed, although fl ying is to me not in that category as a person can not actually see how fast one is being catapulted through the air. Goes to show just how oblivious we tru-ly are to things... unseen. (This becomes another thought to ponder later.) All of this changes dramatically, however, when I am pulled behind a boat. Going 70 miles an hour across a wake on a slalom ski sends my adrenals into overdrive with the thrill of speed and the hopes of sheer accuracy. When I secure my left foot in my ski front
pocket, with right foot strategically placed in the back pocket, I can not help but beam with an ecstatic grin. Balanced and ready, I wait for the boat to circle into position and the tension of the rope to be just right. Oh yes, I am ready for summer. Hit it! My dad taught me to ski when I was three, my sister at fi ve. He was an exceptional athlete (New York Yankee) and from day one I wanted to be just like him. Waterskiing was a sport he was most profi cient at and as a family we spent every moment we could on or in the water. I fondly remember my feet placed right in front of his on skis with a rope he rigged up to connect with his, so I would get the feel of the tug from the boat pull. Holding on to me tightly, he would signal the boat driver and we would be submerged under water for a short distance before we were magically standing above it in the sun. Just me and my dad. As a little girl, there was nothing I loved more. It did not take long before I wanted to ski all by myself, grinning at my daddy driving the boat smiling back at me. In summer we would go on family camping adventures for up to two weeks at a time. It always involved
boating to a fascinating campsite miles from the placed we launched, with my sister and I at the end of double ski ropes from launch to destination, of course. And back. I am grateful for the lessons my dad shared with me and my sister in such a unique way. The love of skiing taught us to keep our eyes looking for-ward. Focus on what’s ahead. Leaving what’s behind. It taught us to trust in our strength and stamina and learned abilities...and to hold on. Most impor-tantly, it taught us that falling down is a part of life. Getting back up is living.

From character voices to soulful blues she is comfortable with Looney Tunes and Patsy Cline. She is a delight to meet and converse with on any number of topics, but you’ll soon find her greatest passion is, in her own words, “there is no greater feeling than the one you get seeing the faces of your audience and then be-ing able to visit with them after every show. I love letting each individual know they are unique-ly special…”

Ray G and the Dime Store ProphetsSunday, May 26th 3pm
Ray G and the Dime Store Prophets is a band formed in Moses Lake, Washington. For the last two years they have played the Pacific NW region and have developed into a distinctive and charming group. They bring a nice blend of cover songs as well as originals powered by tasteful melodies, solid rhythms and popping grooves. Each member of the group adds a unique flavor to the recipe… John Wilson drives the drums and percus-sion for this three-piece. Dime Store Prophets is the culmination of his vision to connect versatile performances with varying audiences from all walks of life. Wilson brings many influences and styles to the shop and keeps things alive when the blues try to creep in.How low can the flow go? Eric Groff is where it stops and he’s the bass man tying it all together. Eric’s job is to juice the groove and keep people’s backsides from sittin’ on their slap-sides. Last and certainly not least is Ray G, the frontman for this musical molotov and when he lights it you may feel the need to catch a breath but he’s only get-ting started! Ray engages audiences with a genuine enthusiasm that can only be called infectious. For him, every performance is a night of true emotion, striking melo-dies and good vibrations all around. Shots please! Forget the day and let your mind be at ease, enjoy the music of Ray G and the DSP!

He loves to have clogging students perform to watch the enjoyment in crowds eyes.
Dale RothSpring Festival Entertainment Chair Not many of us are fortunate enough to embark on a career right out of high school that we stick with for more than three decades...and then forget that it is actually work! When you ask Dale Roth how many hours a week he de-voted to his business or to organizing events both charitable and civic, he can’t tell you. “If you do what you love, and still love it after twenty or thirty years, you stop paying attention to the hours.” Dale has been a pivotal committee member for the Moses Lake Spring Festival for over 30 years, and his work and community service as entertainment chair and performing other functions cannot be over appreciated. He really loves to make people smile and to spread some happiness in a crowd.

Patt y FilbeckSpring Festival President
I’m new to Moses Lake, my husband and I moved here two years ago from Vancouver, Washington where are chil-dren and grandchildren live. Five of my twelve grandchil-dren were all involved with Pop Warner and I was a boardmember and in charge of there concessions. This was some-thing I enjoyed a lot. Last year was my fi rst year with Moses Lake Spring Festival. I jumped in and helped out a lot and was excited to step in as President. Dale Roth who has been involved with the festival for 30 years as shared a lot of history with me, which is much appreciated. We are a new board and have been working hard to make things fun andexciting for this year. I have had the pleasure of meeting new people in the community. I am also a food vendor and look forward to having my booth in the festival again this year. My booth is pasta express. Last year was the fi rst year for that as well. Looking forward to a great year. I will see you at the festival!you at the festival!
Sean SallisSpring Festival 3-on-3 Basketball Director I grew up in Moses Lake and didn’t realize how much I appreciated my childhood here until I moved away for col-lege and came back with a family of my own. My wife Cas-sandra and I have three children Josiah-7, Jonah-2, and Joy 10 mo and they keep us very busy. I have been the Youth Pastor for First Baptist Church of Moses Lake for the past fi ve years and I love what I do I was introduced to the Moses Lake Spring Festival in 2008 while working on staff at Youth Dynamics downtown. There was a defi nite need for someone to direct the 3 on 3 basketball tournament and I decided to take it on as a way to connect with our community and give back. My fi rst year I moved the tournament downtown to attract spectators to see our local downtown businesses. Over the past three years it has continued to grow and now runs three city blocks from Division to Pioneer Way. We have been able to acquire WIAA referees that has given our tournament more professionalism and we are seeing more community involvement with our sponsorships from local businesses.

The roots of farming in Grant County grow long and deep. From the very first pioneer settlers who arrived in the late 1800’s to the Quincy Valley and other
loamy pockets across the great plateau of the Columbia Basin, we live on a landscape that yields to the work of the farmer. A drive just about anywhere across Grant County in the spring reveals work done by the farmer. Wide sweeping expanse of tilled fields sprouting a patina of green that over ensuing months reaches knee-high and beyond. Nestled between this patchwork quilt of a mostly-green landscape are the small farmers, gardeners and those who grow food locally for family and friends, and the ever-popular farmers markets. Moses Lake and Ephrata both have abundant and colorful farmers markets where fresh food and vegetables, crafts and the talents of local musicians are enjoyed. Farmers markets are a phenomenon. They continue to grow in number, sales volume and length of season. Across the state of Washington, from east-to-west, farmers markets incubate new businesses. They bring together farmers from both large and small operations with the customers who buy and eat the food they grow. Farmers strive to offer the highest-quality products and customers are known to share the ‘word’ about a particular stand at the market where the tomatoes, corn, or melon is delicious, or unequaled, or just right. There are economic benefits to shopping at farmers markets. Mirroring our past, present and future, Grant County has sustained itself by growing food for others. While most
of the farmers in the county sustain the larger economy with food sold across the planet, there are still family farmers in the county whose passion is to grow food for local consumption. Research has found that 20 percent of our food dollars to local farmers more than doubles the dollars circulating among local businesses. Community linkages are strengthened, creating a healthier, more diverse and resilient economy. If there is one very important benefit that farmers markets brings to our county and our communities, it is the role these markets play in providing opportunities for people to shop locally. Knowing where your food comes from and how it is grown can help you choose healthy, nutritious food for your family. This is the way it was for the early pioneers whose example lives on in the tradition of small family farms that still thrive in Grant County.

What’s on your gourd?Article/stacy annon, Washington state gourd society president
We all have things on our minds that are challenging, invigorating and inspiring. Sometimes a diversion takes hold that ends up being a wonderful
opportunity to work and associate with friends in a rich creative environment. A great diversion: The Northwest Gourd Festival on July 11th to the 14th at the Kittitas Valley Event Center, Ellensburg WA. Classes are published on our website now and registration has been active! We have tools and supplies as well as beautiful art for sale, and in the competition exhibit. On Saturday we have a special day planned. In addition to wonderful classes, we have a couple of great bands lined up for the afternoon and the start of our Saturday Night Dinner. Dinner tickets are on sale now on our website. A lot of talented people have been and are still working to support this year’s festival. We are always looking for friends and new members. Volunteers who donate four hours receive free admission for all of the festival days; it’s a great deal. In addition, there are some truly wonderful opportunities to grow creatively. Join an existing patch or create your own. We prefer you select one in Washington state of course! We will see you in Ellensburg!

W e are returning hydro racing to Soap Lake after a 30 year absence. Soap Lake was a regular stop on the circuit during the lates 70’s and 80’s.
The healing mineral waters are ideal for fast speeds and some records were sent on these waters. The conducting club is Seattle Drag and Ski Sprint Boat Association who has been organizing and putting on races for over 50 years. Soap Lake will have 12-14 classes of race boats competing, ranging from 10 foot outboards hydros driven by kids 9 -14 years old, to the Gran Prix Hydroplanes - 27 foot monsters powered by big block blown engines reaching speeds of 150 MPH. We anticipate a boat count of around 50 boats. Each team has an average of 3-4 crew members, the crew bring their families and friends. Along with the race officials and support people we anticipate 750 - to 900 people in town that weekend not including spectators. The event is free to the public. Viewing areas are along Highway 17 in the open area just north of the City Park and campground. The City Campground will be the “ Hot Pit Area “ containing the boats and cranes that assist in launching. A raffle is being held to win a “ ride in a race boat “ on race weekend. Tickets on sale at the DEL RED. The race is held on a circular 1 1/4 mile coarse. Although the “ hot pit” area is secured during racing there will be a time each day for people to get up close and view the boats, meet the drivers and crew and have pictures taken in some boats. Race teams are expected from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, North Dakota, and California.

A swing band that started a “Zoot Suit Riot,” a country star looking for a “Brand New Girlfriend,” a popular Texas jazz guitarist and a Seattle band that was around
for the second event in 2005 will headline the 10th Basin Summer Sounds music festival, set for July 19-20. Six other bands will round out a music lover’s Top 10 during the two-day event. A decade of free music comes full circle Friday evening, when The Lonely Forest returns to the Grant County Courthouse stage for the first time since 2006.
Anacortes natives John Van Deusen, Tony Ruland, Braydn Krueger and Eric Sturgeon formed the indie-rock band in 2005. Their music has been featured on the CW television series “The Vampire Diaries”; The Lonely Forest made its national TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August of 2011, performing two songs off of their album, “Arrows,” #14 on Amazon’s list of the Best Albums of 2011. Their biggest hit to date is “We Sing in Time.” The Lonely Forest performs at 7 p.m. At 9 p.m., get ready for Dallas native Steve Holy. During his 10-year career, Holy has topped the country music charts with “Good Morning Beautiful” (2002) and “Brand New Girlfriend.” Holy got his big break in 1993, when he beat out 500 hopefuls in the Dallas-Fort Worth Johnnie High Country Review, the same contest that launched the career of LeAnn Rimes. His debut album was released in 2000, and produced successful singles “Blue Moon” and “The Hunger.”
“Good Morning Beautiful” was number one for five weeks in 2002, and was named Billboard’s #10 Top Country Song of the Decade 1999-2009. For his new album, “Love Don’t Run,” Holy teamed up with producer/songwriter Lee Miller, who has penned such hits as “You’re Gonna Miss This” and “The Impossible.” Saturday evening, Ephrata welcomes back its adopted southern son, Hamilton Loomis, for a 7 p.m. performance. Loomis, a Texas native, has performed at the last three Basin Summer Sounds festivals, and calls North Central Washington “one of our favorite places to play.” The audiences there have been great to us,” Loomis said during an interview in January prior to an appearance at the Soap Lake Businessmen’s Club. Born and raised in Galveston, Hamilton became hooked on the music he was exposed to through is parents’ extensive collection of blues, rock and soul records. He honed his musical chops at a young age, learning drums, piano, guitar, bass and harmonica by his early teens. At age 16 he went backstage to meet Bo Diddley, and before the night was over Loomis was playing alongside the legend. Diddley appeared on Hamilton’s debut album, and Bo’s final recorded song, “You Got To Wait,” is from Loomis’ 2007 Blind Pig release “Ain’t Just Temporary.” “I like that our style is not definable,” Loomis explained. “It’s part blues, part soul, part jazz and part whatever you want to call it. The music we perform has broad appeal and spans several generations.” Joining Hamilton on stage are fellow Gulf Coast musicians Kent Beatty (bass), Fabian Hernandez (saxophone) and Armando Aussenac (drums).

Closing out the 2013 Basin Summer Sounds festival is “Cherry Poppin’ Daddies,” a well-known swing band with the unique ability to bring generations together. The band emerged in the late 80’s with a style that wed the energy
of contemporary rock and roll with influences from the golden age of the American songbook — the 1930s and ’40s.Their classic album of 1998, “Zoot Suit Riot — The Swingin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies,” went double platinum. Propelled by the mega hit single that has become one of those staples in the lineup of fun American pop; Zoot Suit Riot still hangs in there right alongside Celebration and YMCA on wedding reception DJ playlists, and sporting events, from sea to shining sea. They have appeared on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman and Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve, and were the sole musical act featured in a tribute to Duke Ellington in an hour-long special on American Movie Classics. After keeping a slightly lower profile over the past several years, the Daddies have re-emerged with a vengeance, with not one but two albums released in 2009 — Susquehanna and Skaboy JFK - The Skankin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. True to their college town, smarty pants roots, the Daddies released Susquehanna as “a post modern attempt at a concept
album, strongly influenced by Jean Luc Godard’s classic new wave film, Pierrot le Fou.” The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2009 with the honor of an induction into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, joining other notables including Robert Cray and Doc Severinsen. Rounding out the Basin Summer Sounds 2013 lineup are perennial favorites Ian McFeron (11:30 a.m. Saturday), Pearl Django (1 p.m. Saturday), DoctorfunK (4 p.m. Saturday) and The Chris Eger Band (5:30 p.m. Saturday), along with newcomers Rough Stock (Saturday at 2:30 p.m.) and Once Upon a Tuesday (Friday at 5 p.m.), a Seattle band with local ties.“With 2013 being the 10th year for Basin Summer Sounds, we are returning to our roots and inviting some repeats back that have been well-received in the past,” Janice Moore, one of the festival organizers, said. “The Lonely Forest has been making a splash in the last year, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel, and Steve Holy will be releasing a new album right before Basin Summer Sounds, so we’re excited about that timing,” she explained. “Obviously Hamilton Loomis is always a big draw, and we think people will love the music of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, too,” Moore added. Festival sponsorships are still needed, Moore said, noting that “things have gotten really tough financially. The tourism dollars just aren’t there to give out anymore, which has really affected us. “But we’re still dedicated to putting on the best show we possibly can,” she added. Along with non-stop music, the weekend features a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, food vendors, a wine tent and the popular ‘Bottoms-Up’ beer tap. For more information, or to become a Basin Summer Sounds sponsor, contact Theresa Scheib at 760-3611, Janice Moore at 754-3231 or the Ephrata Chamber of Commerce at 754-4656 ([email protected].)

Urgency in any real estate marketArticle/Tom perry - reAlTy esTATe TrAiner & CoACh, reAlTy exeCuTives GrAnT CounTy
Buyers and Sellers in today’s real estate market follow the lead of real estate agents. It seems complicated when the rest of the country is posting that we have a
seller’s market yet in Moses Lake the inventory levels show a Buyer’s market with more than 9 months of inventory. So how does a Seller deal with a Buyer’s market? Price and presentation of the Seller’s home is paramount. Last month we talked about finding an agent that will be candid about the price and expectations of getting your house SOLD. This means that we must price your home in comparison with those houses that have sold. Generally speaking, the price that the
last house like yours brought should be your listing price. The presentation of your home concerns that showing condition of the property and the ease of the buyer’s experience in making the decision to purchase your house. Your house must be in great shape if the prices of the homes you are using for comparable are in great shape. Your agent will display the features of the home and the amenities of the neighborhood in a simple and obvious way. What about the Buyer? Buyers must be ready to make the decision to purchase the home. They shouldn’t be thinking that they will sleep on it before making the offer. So often, that home is sold or there are multiple offers on that home because the buyer waited. Don’t run the risk. Find an agent that you can trust to guide you through the home buying process. Find the right home, make an appropriate offer, and then find the answers to your specific questions about the home and neighborhood. The contract gives the Buyer time to investigate and make the final decision to buy without risk. Back the real estate agents. There are plenty of quality agents working right here. These agents know the area and they know the buying process. But, are they sure enough to assist you to make the right decisions? Decisions like pricing the house to sell of making the offer now. Sellers really don’t have the luxury of overpricing their home or putting off making improvements if they want top dollar. Buyers don’t have the time to wait when it comes to putting an offer on the home they like if they really want that home. Agents must do a better job educating both Buyers and Sellers.

I t’s about cleaning up. Toxins enter your body through the air, water, conventionally produced foods, chemicals in cleaners, plastics…and the list goes on.
Over time, these toxins build up in the tissues, organs, and blood faster than your natural cleansing organs (the kidneys and liver) can handle. That’s when your body benefi ts from an intentional boost: a detox. This kind of cleansing program can be anything from a full-on fast to a light eating plan that includes lots of vegetables and whole grains with nutrients that help your body eliminate toxic elements. Hard-to-digest proteins, fats, and refi ned-fl our products are minimized, and sugar is all but eliminated to give your body a break from this nutritional pitfall. Also, know that there are many different types of cleanses and they can target a specifi c organ and/or a system. A particular elimination pathway should be the main focus, and that’s where a knowledgeable health professional can assist in fi nding the best cleanse for you.How long should a cleanse last? People who eat a healthy, mostly plant-based diet usually cleanse for one to three days (personally, I grow a bit weak if I detox longer than that). But if your diet is less than healthy, a cleanse can be maintained with no ill effects for up to two weeks; even at its longest, it’s not harmful. When detoxing, you’ll soon fi nd that you feel lighter and
you’ll probably lose weight in the bargain; afterward, you’ll likely feel more energetic. And who wouldn’t like that?
Why detox? And what does it mean?
