VIU

La Venice International University (VIU) è un centro internazionale di formazioneavanzata e di ricerca nell’isola di San Servolo, a pochi minuti da piazza San Marco, il cuore della città di Venezia.La VIU nasce nel 1995 su iniziativa dei due atenei veneziani (Ca’ Foscari e Iuav), dellaProvincia di Venezia, della LMU di Monaco di Baviera (Germania), della UAB di Barcellona (Spagna), della Duke University (Durham, USA) e della Fondazione di Venezia.Nel corso degli anni la VIU è cresciuta fino a riunire oggi nel proprio network, oltre ai soci fondatori, undici prestigiose Università internazionali e importantiistituzioni nazionali.Missione della VIU è fornire percorsi di formazione avanzata e di ricerca in un contestointernazionale, favorendo lo scambio di idee e conoscenze con un approccio di studiomulticulturale e multidisciplinare, nel rispetto delle diverse tradizioni accademiche dei paesi di cui le Università associate sono espressione.Ogni anno la VIU accoglie nel proprio campus docenti, ricercatori e studenti di diverse nazionalità che vivono e studiano insieme, e si confrontano sui temi dellaglobalizzazione, innovazione, sostenibilità ambientale e la valorizzazione dei Beni culturali.Inoltre, la VIU offre alla città di Venezia e al suo entroterra un ampio spettro di attività accademiche, scientifiche e culturali innovative e d’eccellenza.

Venice International University (VIU) is an international higher education and research center on the island of San Servolo, just a few minutes away from St. Mark’s square, the heart of the city of Venice.VIU was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between the two Venetian Universities(Ca’ Foscari and Iuav), the Province of Venice, LMU from Munich (Germany), UABfrom Barcelona (Spain), Duke university (Durham, USA) and the Fondazione diVenezia.Since its foundation VIU has grown to include in its network, along with thefounding members, a total of eleven renowned international Universities and important Italian Institutions.The mission of VIU is to offer advanced training and research in an internationalcontext, by promoting the exchange of ideas and knowledge with a multiculturaland interdisciplinary approach and in agreement with the different academictraditions of the Universities which are part of VIU.Each year VIU welcomes professors, researchers and students of differentnationalities who live together, study and carry out research on its campus on keytopics such as globalization, innovation, environmental sustainability and thepromotion of Cultural Heritage.Moreover, VIU brings to the city of Venice and its mainland a prolific range of high profile academic, scientific and innovative activities.

Il 2010 alla Venice International UniversityIl 2010 è stato un anno molto importante per la Venice InternationalUniversity.La rete delle Università che fanno parte della VIU è divenuta piùglobale, permettendo così di rafforzare l’internazionalità della VIU.Nel 2010 la VIU ha dato il suo benvenuto ad un nuovo socio, la TongjiUniversity di Shanghai, un’università prestigiosa e la secondauniversità cinese nel network della VIU, dopo la Tsinghua Universitydi Pechino.Molti importanti obiettivi sono stati raggiunti dal punto di vistaaccademico nel 2010. Le attività della School of Humanities and SocialSciences hanno riscosso molto successo e la VIU auspica di poterospitare un numero ancora maggiore di studenti delle Universitàassociate nei corsi della VIU l'anno prossimo.

Durante il 2010 più di trenta studenti del Globalization Program sulloSviluppo sostenibile hanno trascorso un periodo di studio all’esteropresso centri di ricerca delle Università associate e in altre istituzioni,grazie alle borse di studio messe a disposizione dal Ministero italianodell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare.

Durante il Semestre autunnale (Fall) la VIU ha inaugurato il nuovotema del Globalization Program sui Beni Culturali, centrato suquestioni legate alla gestione dei beni culturali, all’innovazione e alle politiche culturali a livello urbano.

A giugno 2010 la VIU ha presentato il proprio nuovo sito, conl’obiettivo di migliorare la comunicazione rivolta alle Universitàassociate e agli studenti che ora possono partecipare più attivamentee contribuire alla vita della comunità VIU, con le loro opinioni e ideecirca la loro esperienza alla VIU grazie ai social networks.

Inoltre quest’anno la VIU ha partecipato per la prima volta alla Biennale Architettura, promuovendo la mostra “MappingContemporary Venice, from the city of today to the Venice of thefuture” in collaborazione con Moleskine, coinvolgendo gli studentidella VIU in un processo di analisi stimolante sulla Veneziacontemporanea, sia dal punto di vista intellettuale che dal punto divista creativo. La Mostra ha ricevuto un enorme successo e haricevuto una notevole copertura stampa sia a livello nazionale che internazionale.

Nel 2011 la VIU continuerà a perseguire la propria missione per offrire a coloro che vengono alla VIU un’esperienza stimolante, unica e positivasia dal punto di vista accademico che dal punto di vista umano.Ci auguriamo di poter sviluppare molteplici nuove attività congiunte e di darvi presto il benvenuto alla VIU.

2010 at Venice International University2010 has been a very important year for Venice InternationalUniversity.The network of the partner Universities has become more global, thus strengthening the international framework of VIU. In 2010 VIUwelcomed a new partner, Tongji University of Shanghai, a veryprestigious University and the second Chinese University in VIUnetwork, after Tsinghua University of Beijing.Many important goals were achieved this year from an academicpoint of view. The activities of the VIU School of Humanities andSocial Sciences are proving to be very successful and VIU looksforward to having more students from the Member Universities take part in VIU programs next year.

During 2010 more than thirty VIU students of the GlobalizationProgram on Sustainable Development spent a study period abroad in research centers of the Member Universities and in otherInstitutions thanks to the scholarships offered by the Italian Ministryof Environment, Land and Sea.

During the Fall Semester VIU launched the new theme of theGlobalization Program on Cultural Heritage, focussing on issuesrelated to Cultural Heritage Management, Innovation and UrbanCultural Policy.

In June 2010 VIU launched its new web site, aiming at fosteringbetter communication with the Member Universities and studentswho can now participate more actively and contribute to the VIUcommunity through the new social networks, sharing their viewsand ideas about their experience at VIU.

This year VIU also participated for the first time in the InternationalArchitecture Exhibition, promoting the exhibition on “MappingContemporary Venice, from the city of today to the Venice of thefuture” in cooperation with Moleskine, involving VIU students in an intellectually and creatively stimulating analysis of contemporaryVenice. The exhibition was a great success and received a lot ofcoverage on the national and international press.

In 2011 VIU will continue pursuing its mission, offering those whocome to VIU a challenging, unique and valuable academic as well as personal experience.We look forward to many new joint activities, and to welcome you at VIU soon.

Durante i due semestri (primaverile e autunnale) che si tengonoregolarmente ogni anno, la Scuolaorganizza e promuove un programmainterdisciplinare e multiculturaleincentrato sul tema dellaglobalizzazione e le sue declinazioni e conseguenze sociali, ambientali e culturali.Inoltre, fanno parte integrantedell’offerta formativa della Scuola corsisull’Arte e l’Architettura veneziana, laStoria di Venezia antica e moderna, laStoria contemporanea italiana e Culturae lingua italiana per stranieri, miratisoprattutto agli studenti che provengonodalle Università associate non italiane,oltre alle attività formative extra-curricolari e complementari ai corsi,seminari intensivi e programmi estivi. I corsi sono offerti in lingua inglese daidocenti delle Università associate e sonoaperti a tutti gli studenti degli ateneiche fanno parte della VIU.

The School of Humanities and SocialSciences (SHSS) of VIU is an innovativeand challenging opportunity forstudents of the Member Universities. During the two academic semesters(Spring and Fall) that are held regularlyevery year, the School offers andpromotes an interdisciplinary andmulticultural program focussing on Globalization and its social,environmental and cultural declinationsand consequences. Moreover, the School offers courses onVenetian Art and Architecture, Historyof Ancient and Modern Venice, ItalianContemporary History and Italianlanguage and culture for those studentswho come from the non Italian MemberUniversities, as well as stimulatingextra-curricular and cocurricularactivities, intensive seminars, and summer schools.The Faculty of the School comes fromthe Member Universities. All courses aretaught in English and they are open toall students in the Member Universities.

Il GlobalizationProgram

Il Globalization Program della School of Humanitiesand Social Sciences mira ad offrire agli studentidella VIU la possibilità di partecipare aun’esperienza di studio e ricerca in un contestointernazionale. Obiettivo del Programma è di creare un CollegioSuperiore per i migliori studenti delle universitàassociate alla VIU e di rendere San Servolo la sede di una riflessione originale sulle tematiche dellaglobalizzazione, nonché sulle sfide e le opportunitàper i paesi di cui la VIU è espressione.

Il programma si articola in:corsi – sui temi della globalizzazione e della sostenibilitàambientale (durante il semestre primaverile) e sul temadei Beni culturali (durante il Semestre autunnale)stage di ricerca internazionali – presso centri diricerca, università, istituzioni e imprese nazionali edinternazionali per lo sviluppo della tesi magistralelaboratori di tesi – per completare la tesi sulla basedel periodo di studio all’estero e delle attività diricerca condotte durante la frequenza del Programma.

Durante il Semestre primaverile il GlobalizationProgram mira a formare nuove figure professionalicapaci di dialogare con il mercato cinese, perconsentire alle imprese e alle istituzioni di proporsiin termini competitivi nel nuovo scenarioeconomico internazionale.

Alla conclusione del Semestre primaverile 2010 allaVIU più di trenta studenti sono stati selezionati pertrascorrere un periodo di tirocinio all’estero per ilcompletamento della tesi di laurea presso centri diricerca di Università associate alla VIU o pressoistituzioni con cui la VIU ha accordi di collaborazione,quali: Tsinghua University, Tongji University, ilCommissariato generale del Governo per ShanghaiExpo 2010, il MoCA Shanghai, la Duke University, la Tilburg University, l’Universitat Autònoma deBarcelona, l’Instituto de Pesquisa Economica Aplicada(IPEA) a Brazilia, l’Institute for Human Developmentdi New Delhi, l’UNEP Bangkok, la Waseda University,la Camera di Commercio Italiana per il Sud EstAsiatico (C.C.I.S.E.A.) e l’IIED di Edinburgo.

Gi studenti selezionati hanno ricevuto borse distudio offerte dal Ministero dell’Ambiente e dellaTutela del territorio e del Mare, per la copertura deicosti di partecipazione al programma e di viaggio.

Nell’ambito del progetto “Invest your talent in Italy”,che rientra nell’Intesa Operativa ICE/Unioncamere,col supporto del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economicoe in collaborazione col Ministero degli Affari Esteri,la Venice International University ha offerto la

frequenza ai corsi del Globalization Program a giovani laureati indiani e turchi. A partire dal Semestre autunnale 2010, la School of Humanities and Social Sciences ha dato avvio alnuovo tema del Globalization Program sul PatrimonioCulturale offrendo corsi avanzati su temi legati allagestione del patrimonio culturale, all’innovazione e alle politiche culturali a livello urbano. Lo scopo del programma è quello di sviluppare unariflessione approfondita ed interdisciplinare sui temidella gestione del patrimonio culturale,dell’innovazione e delle politiche culturali urbane.

The GlobalizationProgram

The Globalization Program of the School ofHumanities and Social Sciences aims to give VIUstudents the chance to take part in a study andresearch experience in an international context. The aim of the Program is to establish a School ofExcellence for the best students coming from theVIU Member Universities and to create a think tankon San Servolo focusing on the latest research onthe theme of globalization as well as the challengesfor the countries represented by Venice InternationalUniversity in today’s economic scenario.

The program is composed of:Courses: on the themes of globalization andenvironmental sustainability (during the SpringSemester) and on the theme of Cultural Heritage(during the Fall Semester)international mobility – at national and internationalresearch centers, universities, institutions and firms,in order to develop a final research dissertationdissertation workshops – to develop the finaldissertation based on the internships and researchactivities carried out during the program.

During the Spring Semester the GlobalizationProgram aims at training new professionals, incharge of liaising with the Chinese market, in orderto facilitate companies and institutions that wish to have a competitive role in the new internationaleconomic scenario.

After attending the Spring 2010 semester at VIU,more than thirty students were selected forinternational internships to carry out research fortheir final dissertations. The students spent a period

of time at research centers of the VIU MemberUniversities or institutions with which VIU has signedMemoranda of Understanding, such as: TsinghuaUniversity, Tongji University, the General Commissionof the Italian Government for the Shanghai Expo2010, the MoCA Shanghai, Duke University, TilburgUniversity, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona,the Instituto de Pesquisa Economica Aplicada (IPEA) inBrazilia, the Institute for Human Development in NewDelhi, UNEP Bangkok, Waseda University, the ItalianChamber of Commerce for East Asian Countries(C.C.I.S.E.A.) and the IIED in Edinburgh.The selected students were awarded scholarshipsgranted by the Italian Ministry for Environment,Land and Sea in order to cover their participationand mobility costs.In the framework of the project “Invest your talentin Italy” that is part of the operational agreementbetween ICE (the Italian Trade Commission) andUnioncamere, and with the support of the Ministryof Economic Development, in cooperation with theItalian Minister for Foreign Affairs, VeniceInternational University offered young graduatesfrom India and Turkey the opportunity to take partin the courses of the Globalization Program. As of the 2010 Fall Semester, the School ofHumanities and Social Sciences launched the newtheme of the Globalization Program focusing onCultural Heritage, offering a set of advanced courseson the issues related to Cultural HeritageManagement, Innovation and Urban Cultural Policy. The aim of the program is to develop aninterdisciplinary in depth examination on thethemes of Cultural Heritage Management,Innovation and Urban Policy.

Last summer Boston College, in cooperation with Venice InternationalUniversity, offered its students a three-week three-course summer schoolinstead of the two-course summerschool held in the previous editions.

Il workshop si è focalizzato sul ritratto fotografico. ll tema scelto, come dimostra il titolo, è un chiaroriferimento al fenomeno dei social network che ha recentemente subito una crescita esponenziale.L’intenzione del seminario è stata quella di rifletteresulla rappresentazione di noi stessi, unarappresentazione che, non necessariamente,corrisponde alla realtà. Quindi, come ci vedono gli altri?La loro visione ha un riscontro nella realtà?Con l’aiuto della fotografia i partecipanti delworkshop sono stati invitati a rappresentare “l’altro”(i loro compagni) nella vita di ogni giorno, in unaricerca che ha avuto come risultato una serie diritratti che descrivono l’altro e ne approfondisconola conoscenza.Ogni partecipante ha creato una breve e coerenteserie di ritratti di un suo compagno/a.

Il Gran Bazaar. L’arte della negoziazione in un mondo disordinatoQuesto il workshop creativo a cui hanno partecipatogli studenti del semestre autunnale 2010.Le negoziazioni internazionali: il tema del workshopè di cruciale importanza nel mondo contemporaneoglobalizzato. Considerando che nel futuro si dovrà affrontaredifficoltà crescenti nella fornitura dei beni essenziali(acqua, energia, cibo), l’alternativa è di risolvere il conflitto o con la forza o con la negoziazione.Obiettivo del workshop è stato dimostrare in cosaconsista la negoziazione e come il suo successodipenda dal trovare una soluzione che sia la piùvantaggiosa per tutte le parti coinvolte.Il workshop ha avuto due sessioni di tre oreciascuna. Durante la prima sessione gli studentihanno ricevuto una introduzione alla negoziazioneinternazionale e le istruzioni per un gioco disimulazione che si è tenuto durante la secondasessione del seminario.Il workshop è stato coordinato dall’AmbasciatoreAlessandro Merola, entrato nel corpo diplomaticoitaliano nel 1972 iniziando la sua carriera nelDirettorato Generale per il Personale el’Amministrazione. L’Ambasciatore Merola nel 2005è stato nominato “Ministro plenipotenziario” e attualmente è al servizio della Presidenza del Consiglio Italiano dei Ministri come ConsigliereDiplomatico.

The workshop focused on photographic portraiture.The chosen subject, as shown by the title, is a clearreference to the social networking phenomenon,which has recently experienced an exponentialproliferation. The intention of the workshop was to reflect uponthe representation of ourselves: a representationwhich does not necessarily correspond to reality.So, how do others see us?Does their representation of us match reality?With the aid of photography, the workshopparticipants were invited to represent "the other"(fellow students) in everyday life, in an investigationthat has resulted in a series of portraits that describethe other and deepen each other's knowledge.Each participant created a short and consistentseries of portraits of his/her fellow students.

The Great Bazaar. The Art of Negotiating in a Disordered WorldThis creativity workshop was attended by the students of the Fall 2010 Semester.The theme of the workshop was absolutely crucialin contemporary globalized world: InternationalNegotiations. Assuming that in the future we shall face growingdifficulties in the provision of essential goods(water, energy, food), the alternative is to resolveconflict through force or negotiation. The aim of the workshop was to show what negotiation isabout and how its success depends on finding a solution that turns out to be the mostadvantageous to all the parties involved.The workshop had two sessions of three hours each.During the first session the participating studentswere given an introduction to internationalnegotiation and instructions for the simulationgame. During the second session the students tookpart in a simulation game.The workshop was coordinated by AmbassadorAlessandro Merola, who joined the Italiandiplomatic service in 1972 and began his career by serving in the Directorate General for Personnel and Administration. Ambassador Merola waspromoted to the diplomatic rank of "MinisterPlenipotentiary" in 2005 and presently serves at the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministersas Diplomatic Advisor.

Mapping contemporary Venice: from the city of today to the Venice of the futureLa VIU, in collaborazione con Moleskine, ha invitato ipropri studenti a elaborare su taccuini Moleskine un racconto visionario della città di Venezia e ariflettere sul passaggio concettuale verso i possibilifuturi di questa città.L’obiettivo è stato quello di cercare e interpretare i segnali di contemporaneità presenti sul territorio e di immaginarne di nuovi da sovrapporre a ciò chevediamo ogni giorno. Il Parco Scientifico Tecnologicodel VEGA, il nuovo Ponte di Calatrava, le isole di SanServolo e della Certosa, il complesso dell’Arsenale,Palazzo Grassi e il centro d’arte di Punta della Dogana(recentemente restaurato da Tadao Ando), laFondazione Vedova disegnata dall’architetto RenzoPiano, le vetrerie dislocate tra Murano e la terraferma,il distretto della calzatura lungo il fiume Brenta, gliincubatori creativi e tecnologici di H-Farm e Fabrica a Treviso sono solo alcuni elementi di una Veneziametropolitana che necessitano di essere visualizzati e narrati in un modo totalmente nuovo.Il progetto creativo “Mapping Contempory Venice”ha coinvolto due sezioni parallele:Detour, progetto itinerante di Moleskine giunto allasua settima tappa, che ha affrontato Venezia per laprima volta e che ha visto la partecipazione di notiprofessionisti e intellettuali (architetti, urbanisti,designers, artisti visuali, scrittori e sociologi) emyDetour, che ha coinvolto studenti Italiani edinternazionali provenienti dalla VIU, l’Università Iuav di Venezia, l’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia,l’Accademia di Belle Arti e altre istituzioni.

Mapping contemporary Venice: from the city of today to the Venice of the futureVIU, in cooperation with Moleskine, invited itsstudents to create a new visual representation ofcontemporary Venice and its possible projectionsinto the future on Moleskine notebooks. The goal was to portray the signs of thecontemporary world present in the local Venetianterritory, and to imagine new ones that could besuperimposed on what we see everyday. The VegaScience Park, the new Calatrava bridge, the islandsof San Servolo and of the Certosa, the Arsenalecomplex, the new contemporary art museum at Palazzo Grassi and at the Punta della Dogana(recently restored by Tadao Ando), the VedovaFoundation (designed by Renzo Piano), the glassfactories located on the island of Murano and themainland, the shoe district along the Brenta river,the creative and technological incubators H-farmand Benetton's Fabrica in Treviso are just some ofthe elements of a metropolitan Venice which needsto be viewed and reviewed in a totally new way.The creative project “Mapping ContemporaryVenice” featured two parallel sections:Detour, a Moleskine itinerant project addressingVenice for the first time after previous stops,featuring well known creative professionals andintellectuals (architects, urban planners, designers,visual artists, writers and sociologists) andmyDetour, involving Italian and internationalstudents from VIU, Università Iuav di Venezia,Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, Accademia di BelleArti and other institutions.

Distretti industriali, tecnologie e networkUna delle aree di ricerca principali del TeDIS è lostudio dei distretti industriali e delle piccole e medieimprese nei sistemi produttivi locali in particolaresui temi dell'innovazione tecnologica,dell'internazionalizzazione e del design. Dal 1998 il Centro TeDIS ha costituito un osservatoriopermanente sui temi della competitività edell'innovazione delle aziende distrettualimonitorando su tutto il territorio nazionale oltre 43 distretti industriali.L'Osservatorio TeDIS 2010 sarà ampliato percomprendere anche un campione di imprese dipiccole dimensioni. Tradizionalmente l'Osservatoriosi è focalizzato sulle imprese con fatturati superioriai 2,5 milioni di euro e ha dato enfasi al ruolo dellamedia impresa nel processo di sostegno e sviluppodell'economia nazionale. The TeDIS ResearchCenter

Innovation and Competitiveness in theGlobal Economy TeDIS (Center for Studies onTechnologies in Distributed IntelligenceSystems) is a research centerestablished within VIU in 1999. TeDIScarries out research on innovation andcompetitiveness of companies andSMEs in the industrial districts, underthe supervision of an internationalscientific committee. TeDIS promotesresearch in cooperation with private andpublic institutions and companies. TeDIShas also developed a joint researchprogram on industrial districts,globalization, and global value chains in cooperation with Duke UniversityCenter on Globalization, Governanceand Competitiveness directed by Professor Gary Gereffi.

TeDIS research focuses on several main areas: • industrial districts, technologies and networks • SMEs, Local Clusters and Internationalization • Creativity, Design and Innovation • Transport, Logistics and Supply ChainManagement • Innovation in Public Administration and e-democracy

Industrial districts, technologies and networksA core TeDIS research area is the study of IndustrialDistricts and SMEs in the local manufacturingcontexts and in particular the evolution of theirapproach towards Network Technologies,internationalization processes and Design. TheTeDIS Survey was launched in 1998 to focus on thethemes of competitiveness and innovation in theItalian Industrial Districts, monitoring more than 43 clusters all around the country.In 2010 the Survey has been enlarged tocomprehend a set of enterprises of smalldimension. Traditionally the survey was focused oncompanies with a revenue grater than 2,5 millioneuro per year giving emphasis to the mediumenterprises role on the development processes of the national economy. In 2010 the survey wasextended to cover those companies with more than1 million euro revenue in order to analyze smallercompanies’ dynamics of competitiveness and theirstrategies in the globalization processes, with a particular attention towards the competitiveadvantages of these companies in the global value chain.

Innovation in Public Administration, e-government and e-democracyStarting from 2007 a further research unit carriedout at TeDIS focuses on the theme of Innovation in public institutions, in particular concerning e-government and e-democracy. TeDIS collaborateswith the Veneto Region in order to set andimplement the “Guidelines for the promotion of theInformation Society within the Veneto Region”, byfocusing in particular on the themes of intangibleinfrastructures (broad band), the promotion of cultural heritage through new technologies and of local e-government. The project results are highlighted in the publication "L'evoluzione dei modelli e delle tecnologie per la partecipazione dei cittadini: l'esperienza del Consiglio Regionale del Veneto"; Marsilio, 2010, and in the broad banddiffusion report 2010 edited by the Veneto Region

SMEs, Local Clusters and InternationalizationThe internationalization process of small andmedium enterprises is the second relevant TeDISresearch area. The goal of this research program is todescribe and analyze the internationalization trendsof Italian small and medium enterprises within the scenario of the global economy.The research focus is the small and mediumenterprises’ internationalization production andmarket strategies, especially targeted on the Madein Italy small and medium enterprises. Namely,starting from the Survey, the analysis was based onthe comparison between the small and mediumenterprises internationalization strategies (whetherclusters or not) and on the global value chaingovernance of Italian small and medium-sizedcompanies.The following publications are the research results: Chiarvesio, M., Di Maria E., Micelli S. The 2010 research was focused on small enterprisesand stemmed from two questions:– Can small enterprises survive in the globalizationera?– Where does the competitive advantage for smallenterprises in the global value chain come from?

The research will deliver a quantification of the enterprise scenario (companies with 10 to 50employees and over 1 million euro revenue per yearin the field of manufacturing) and will offerindications for redesigning the TeDIS surveyquestionnaire previously targeted at medium-sizedcompanies.

Creativity, Design and InnovationThis new research area has been promoted since2003. Creativity is a key element in order to sustaincompanies’ competitiveness in the global economy.New trends are reshaping competition on the basisof a stronger need for innovative products.Creativity and design are the new drivers forinnovative products and services. Creativity, designand innovation are analyzed in order to point outthe key factors that can sustain and foster thecompetitiveness of companies and how companiesuse and invest in design and creativity in order to produce innovative products.

In 2010 CNA of Vicenza appointed TeDIS to carry outa project in the handicraft sector focused on thetopics of creativity and innovation in the frameworkof the 2010 handicraft festival: “AAA Cercasi NuovoArtigiano”. The aim of the project was to reflect onthe value of the artisan work, finding new ways toconvey its role in today’s society and to support andfoster the artisan creativity through an enduringnetwork that has brought together Italian artisansand young national and international designers. A further initiative has been planned to developcommunication events with a high effect on thepublic, such as the 2010 Festival, as a means of illustrating the artisan world.

Innovazione nella Pubblica Amministrazione e e-democracy Dal 2007 un’ulteriore area di ricerca del CentroTeDIS riguarda il tema dell'Innovazione nellaPubblica Amministrazione in particolare sul frontedel E-government e del E-democracy. TeDIS collaboracon la Regione del Veneto per la redazione edattuazione delle "Linee Guida per lo sviluppo dellaSocietà dell'Informazione nella Regione del Veneto"con una particolare focalizzazione sui temi delleinfrastrutture immateriali (banda larga), dellaValorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale attraverso le nuove tecnologie e lo sviluppo del e-governmentlocale. I risultati del lavoro sono evidenziati nel libro"L'evoluzione dei modelli e delle tecnologie per la partecipazione dei cittadini: l'esperienza delConsiglio Regionale del Veneto"; Marsilio editore,2010 e nel rapporto di diffusione della Banda Larga2010 pubblicato dalla Regione Veneto.

Piccole e medie imprese, “cluster” locali e InternazionalizzazioneIl processo d’internazionalizzazione delle piccole emedie imprese è la seconda area di ricerca rilevantedel centro TeDIS. Obiettivo della ricerca è descrivere e analizzare le tendenze all’internazionalizzazionedelle piccole e medie imprese italiane nell’ambitodell’economia globale. La ricerca si è focalizzata sullo studio delle strategie di internazionalizzazioneproduttiva e commerciale delle PMI specializzate nel Made in Italy. Il lavoro di ricerca nel 2010 si è concentrato sullapiccola impresa ed è partito da due domandefondamentali a cui si cerca di dare risposta: - Le piccole imprese possono sopravvivere nellaglobalizzazione?- Quali sono le fonti del vantaggio competitivo dellepiccole imprese che si sono inserite entro le cateneglobali del valore?

La ricerca consegnerà una quantificazionedell'universo aziendale di riferimento (imprese tra i 10-50 dipendenti o sopra il milione di ¤ di fatturato nelmanifatturiero) e delle indicazioni inerenti il recupero o la rimodulazione del questionario TeDIS utilizzatoper le precedenti indagini sulla media impresa.

Creatività, Design e InnovazioneQuesta nuova area di ricerca è stata promossa a partire dal 2003. La creatività è un elementofondamentale per sostenere la competitività delleimprese nell’economia globale. Nuove tendenzestanno rimodellando la competizione, sulla base di una crescente necessità di prodotti innovativi. La creatività e il design sono le nuove molle peravere prodotti e servizi innovativi. Creatività, designe innovazione vengono analizzati al fine dievidenziare i fattori principali per il sostegno e l’incremento della competitività delle aziende e per capire come le aziende usino ed investano in design e creatività per avere prodotti innovativi.

Nel 2010 CNA Vicenza ha incaricato TeDIS direalizzare un progetto nel settore dell’artigianatoincentrato sui temi della creatività e dell’innovazione nel contesto del Festivaldell’artigianato intitolato “AAA Cercasi Nuovoartigiano”. I risultati di progetto sono stati lariflessione sul valore del lavoro artigianale percercare un nuovo modo di comunicare questa figuranella società e supportare e sviluppare la creativitàartigianale attraverso la costruzione di un networkpermanente che ha messo in contatto gli artigianiitaliani con giovani designer nazionali einternazionali. Un’ulteriore iniziativa è stata quelladi progettare eventi di comunicazione con un altoimpatto di pubblico come il Festival, comestrumento di racconto del mondo artigiano.

Trasporti, Logistica e Gestione delle catene del valoreLa logistica costituisce un’altra area di ricerca increscita, focalizzata sulla gestione delle catene delvalore in contesti locali (i distretti industriali) enell’economia globale. Il centro TeDIS ha istituitouna unità dedicata al tema dei “Trasporti, Logistica e gestione delle catene del valore” con l’obiettivo di identificare strumenti e soluzioni innovative permigliorare la competitività delle catene del valore e i risultati dei sistemi logistici.Dal 2008 sono in tuttora corso due progettitriennali:

–“Euridice”, con il cofinanziamento dell’UnioneEuropea, nell’ambito del VII programma quadro.Il progetto mira alla creazione dei concetti e dellesoluzioni tecnologiche, oltre ai modelli commercialinecessari per avviare servizi informativi quanto piùavanzati per il trasporto delle merci in Europa. Il capo progetto è “Insiel - Informatica per il Sistemadegli Enti Locali Spa. La VIU è uno dei ventiduepartner di progetto coinvolti.

– TRIM, “Trasporto Infrastrutture e Monitoraggio”,finanziato dal Programma “Interreg IV A, Italia-Austria”, che mira al miglioramentodell’infrastruttura informativa relativa al traffico per la programmazione e la gestione stradale a lungo termine nell’area di riferimento e alperfezionamento dei grafici stradali esistenti perquanto riguarda profondità, struttura e qualitàinformativa.

Nel 2010 è stato vinto e finanziato un progettoquadriennale nell’ambito del programma InterregItalia Slovenia: Adria A – Accessibility andDevelopment for the Re-launch of the Inner Adriatic Area.Il progetto ha come obiettivo al creazione di unaarea metropolitana al confine tra Italia e Sloveniapossibile anche grazie all’integrazione della Slovenianell’area Shengen. L’integrazione tra queste duearee permetterà ai cittadini di aumentare il livello di fruizione del territorio. Il capo progetto è CentralEurope Initiative

International Summer Research WorkshopIl terzo International Summer Research Workshoporganizzato in collaborazione con il Centro sullaGlobalizzazione, la Governance e la Competitività(CGGC) della Duke University si è tenuto a Veneziadal 13 al 15 luglio 2010. Questo seminario è il terzo di una serie di quattro incontri che si terrannoannualmente, rispettivamente ed alternativamentea Venezia (edizioni 2008 e 2010) e a Durham(edizioni 2009, 2011), nello stato della Carolina del Nord, negli Stai Uniti. I seminari valorizzano la pluriennale esperienza maturata sui temi dellecatene del valore globali e della competitività delCentro CGGC e sulla ricerca dei distretti industrialiitaliani sviluppata dal centro TeDIS. Hannopartecipato al seminario docenti internazionali,relatori e giovani ricercatori di diversi paesi.

I seminari illustrano le principali teorie sulle catenedel valore globale, i distretti industriali, i clusterslocali e prenderanno in considerazione le attività di ricerca in corso dei partecipanti così come i nuovi progetti.Il tema principale del seminario che si è tenuto nel 2010 è stato “Miglioramento delle performanceambientali della catena globale del valore”.

Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain ManagementLogistics is another growing area of research,focusing on supply chain management in localcontexts (industrial districts) and in the globaleconomy. TeDIS center has established a dedicatedunit on “Transport, Logistics and Supply ChainManagement” in order to identify innovative toolsand solutions to improve supply chaincompetitiveness and logistics systemsperformances.

Since 2008 two research projects are on going:– the Euridice Project, co-financed by the EU withinthe VII Framework Program. This project aims tocreate the necessary concepts, technologicalsolutions and business models to set up the mostadvanced information services for freighttransportation in Europe. The project leader is Insiel- Informatica per il Sistema degli Enti Locali Spa. VIUis one of the twenty-two project partners involved.

– TRIM, “Transport, Infrastructures and Monitoring”,financed by the “Interreg – IV A, Italy – AustriaProgram”; the project aims at improving theinformation infrastructures related to traffic for thelong – term street programming and managementin this area and at improving the existing streetmaps with regards to the quality, the structure andthe quantity of the information provided.

In 2010 a four year project has been financed by theInterreg Italy Slovenia Program: Adria A –Accessibility and  Development for the Re-launch of the Inner Adriatic Area.The project aims at creating a metropolitan areabetween the Italian and Slovenian border, thanks tothe integration of Slovenia in the Shengen area. International Summer Research WorkshopThe third International Summer Research Workshoporganized in collaboration with Duke University’sCenter on Globalization, Governance &Competitiveness (CGGC) took place in Venice fromJuly 13 to July 15, 2010. This workshop was the thirdone of a series of four workshops that will be heldannually over the next four years, alternately inVenice (in 2008 and 2010) and in Durham, NC (in 2009 and 2011). The workshops enhance theexpertise on the themes of global value chains andcompetitiveness achieved in the last years by theCGGC and on the empirical research of Italianindustrial districts carried out by TeDIS Center.International faculty, guest speakers and youngresearchers coming from different countriesattended the workshop.

The workshops highlight the key theories on globalvalue chains, industrial districts, and local clusters,and will take into consideration the participants’ongoing research as well as new research projects. The theme of the 2010 year workshop was“Environmental Upgrading in Global Value Chains”.

Il centro TEN

Il Centro TEN (Thematic EnvironmentalNetworks) è un centro di formazione e ricerca sui temi della gestioneambientale e dello sviluppo sostenibile.Il TEN offre specifiche sessioni ditraining dedicate ad una varietà di temisupportati da un networkinternazionale di esperti ed inparticolare sulla Green Economy, laglobalizzazione e l’ambiente, le politicheambientali e la sicurezza alimentare. Nel 2003 il Ministero italianodell’Ambiente, del Territorio e del Mare ha scelto il Centro TEN come partnerscientifico per le proprie attività di formazione avanzata rivolte apartecipanti della Repubblica PopolareCinese e per i Corsi sulla Sostenibilità per i paesi dell’Europa dell’Est, dell’Asiacentrale e del Mar Nero.

Programma di Formazione Avanzata con la Repubblica Popolare Cinese su Sviluppo Sostenibile e Gestione Ambientale Scopo del Programma di Formazione è lapromozione dello sviluppo sostenibile tra irappresentanti del Governo e di istituzioni cinesicoinvolti nei processi decisionali. Il trasferimento di conoscenze, la promozione delle tecnologie e la presentazione di casi studio sono alla base delProgramma. Sette sono ad oggi le istituzioni cinesicoinvolte nel Programma: l’Accademia Cinese delleScienze Sociali (CASS), il Ministero Cinese dellaScienza e della Tecnologia (MOST), il MinisteroCinese per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (MEP),l’Agenzia per la Protezione Ambientale dellaMunicipalità di Pechino (BMEPB), l’Agenzia per la Protezione Ambientale della Municipalità diShanghai (SEPB), la Commissione per la Scienza e la Tecnologia della Municipalità di Tianjin (TSTC), la National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC).Il Programma è organizzato in moduli di duesettimane e prevede lezioni e visite di studio a Roma, Siena e Torino, presso il Ministerodell’Ambiente, l’Università di Siena e Agroinnova,Centro di Competenza dell’Università di Torino, tuttipartner del Programma di Formazione. I principali temi affrontati nelle diverse sessioni delProgramma sono: Gestione dei rifiuti, Cambiamenticlimatici, Principi, strategie e politiche di SviluppoSostenibile, Monitoraggio ambientale, Gestione dellefonti di inquinamento, Inquinamento delle risorseidriche, Accordi ambientali multilaterali, Low CarbonEconomy, Energie rinnovabili ed efficienzaenergetica, Innovazione delle tecnologie e dellagestione ambientale, Valutazione ambientalestrategica, Sviluppo urbano sostenibile.Nel 2010 sono state organizzate 30 sessioni, di cui 6 in Cina, e ha coinvolto 1474 partecipanticinesi, portando così a 6912 il numero totale di partecipanti cinesi coinvolti dall’inizio del Programma.

The TEN Center

The Center for Thematic EnvironmentalNetworks (TEN) is a training andresearch center carrying out activities in the field of environment andsustainable development. The TENcenter offers specific training sessionson a variety of topics through itsinternational network of experts and in particular on Green Economy,Globalization and Environment,Environmental Policy and Food Security. In 2003, the Italian Ministry for theEnvironment, Land and Sea selected TENCenter as the scientific partner for itsCapacity Building activities within theSino-Italian Cooperation Program forEnvironmental Protection as well as forthe Courses on Sustainability for EastEuropean countries, Central Asia and theBlack Sea Region.

The Sino-Italian Advanced Training Program on Sustainable Development and Environmental Management The aim of the Sino-Italian Advanced TrainingProgram is to promote sustainable developmentamong Chinese decision-makers. Knowledgetransfer and promotion of the best technologiesand practices are at the basis of the Program. SevenChinese institutions participate in the Program:Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), ChineseMinistry of Science and Technology (MOST), ChineseMinistry of Environmental Protection (MEP), BeijingMunicipal Environmental Protection Bureau(BMEPB), Shanghai Municipal EnvironmentalProtection Bureau (SEPB), Tianjin Municipal Scienceand Technology Commission (TSTC), NationalDevelopment and Reform Commission (NDRC).The Program is organized as a set of two-weeksmodules with lecturing sessions and site visits in Rome, Siena and Turin, at the sites of the ItalianMinistry for the Environment, the University ofSiena, Agroinnova Center of Competence of theUniversity of Turin, all partners in the Program.The main topics addressed in the different sessionsof the Program are: Waste Management, ClimateChange, Eco-management Strategies and Policies,Environmental Monitoring, Pollution SourceManagement, Water Pollution, MultilateralEnvironmental Agreements, Low Carbon Economy,New and Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency,Innovation of Environmental Technology andManagement, Strategic Environmental Assessment. The Sino-Italian Distance Learning Program The Distance Learning Program is a one-weekintroductory course on Environmental Managementand Sustainable Development launched in 2007 to increase the number of beneficiaries in theAdvanced Training Program. Lecturers broadcastfrom Italy and Beijing to simultaneously reachclassrooms in different regions of China. In 2010, the Program addressed 485participants in 10 cities:Beijing, Changsha, Hohhot, Lingzhi, Sanya, Taiyuan,Urumqi, Xining, Ha’erbin, Nanchong.

The Sino-Italian Environmental Training CommunityNewsletter & WebA quarterly Chinese-English newsletter is publishedon paper and on-line to consolidate the network of different participants, lecturers, policy-makers,experts and entrepreneurs of the Advanced TrainingProgram with China. The first two newsletter issuesin 2010 focus on aspects related to two importantinternational recent events, i.e. climate change afterthe UN Climate Change Conference held inCopenhagen in December 2009 and the Sino-Italiancontribution to Greening the Shanghai Expo 2010.The last issue of the year focuses on StrategicEnvironmental Assessment and Risk Management.A web-portal is on-line and open to the TrainingProgram Alumni network and is constantly updatedon the courses and on their contents. The web-portal has been reviewed in 2010 to make it evenmore user-friendly.

The Course on Sustainability for East Europeancountries, Black Sea Area and Russian FederationThe Course on Sustainability for East Europeancountries, the Black Sea area and Russian Federationis an advanced course addressed to decision makersfrom the governments of the countries involved in the different Course editions. In 2010 three editions of the Course were arranged: 1) the Sustainable Development for St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region involved participants from thepartner institutions (the Leningrad Region, the CityGovernment of St. Petersburg, the Russian StateHydrometerological University and Vodokanal –Water and Waste Management Company) and wasfocused on the most urgent issues for them such as Water and Costal Management, Urban Planning and Waste Management; 2) the Partnerships forSustainable Development – Sustainable PublicPolicies and Business Practices for Black Sea Countrieswith representatives from Bulgaria, Georgia,Romania, Russian Federation, Turkey and Ukraine;focused on Climate Change and WaterManagement with an introductory session onSustainable Development at the Bilgi University in Istanbul and an implementing session at the VIUin Venice; 3)The Course on Local Sustainability andAction with representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia,Montenegro, Serbia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Polandand Slovakia focused on the principles of SustainableDevelopment at local level with an implementingsession at the Regional Environmental Center new zero emission conference center in Budapest.

Lelezioni vengono trasmesse dall’Italia e da Pechino e raggiungono simultaneamente classi in regionidiverse della Cina. Corso sulla Sostenibilità per i paesi dell’Europa dell’Est, della regione del Mar Nero e la Federazione RussaIl Corso sulla Sostenibilità per i paesi dell’Europadell’Est, la regione del Mar Nero e la FederazioneRussa è un corso di formazione avanzata rivolto ai rappresentanti dei rispettivi governi dei paesicoinvolti. Nel 2010 sono state organizzate tre edizioni del Corso: 1) il Sustainable Development for St. Petersburg andLeningrad Region con partecipanti provenienti dalleistituzioni partner (la Regione di Leningrado, la Municipalità di San Pietroburgo, l’Università di Idrometereologia e Vodokanal – compagnia digestione delle acque e dei rifiuti) ha affrontato itemi dello Sviluppo Sostenibile per loro più urgenticome la gestione delle acque delle zone costiere, la pianificazione urbana e la gestione dei rifiuti; 2) Partnerships for Sustainable Development –Sustainable Public Policies and Business Practices forBlack Sea Countries con rappresentanti di Bulgaria,Georgia, Romania, Federazione Russa, Turchia eUcraina analizza il tema dei cambiamenti climatici e della gestione delle acque e comprende unasessione introduttiva sui principi dello svilupposostenibile all’Università Bilgi di Istanbul e unasessione dedicata all’analisi di casi di studio a VIU a Venezia; 3) il Course on Local Sustainability andAction con rappresentanti di Albania, Bosnia ed Erzegovina, Croazia, Kosovo, Macedonia,Montenegro, Serbia, Repubblica Ceca, Ungheria,Polonia e Slovacchia, dedicato alla sostenibilità a livello locale, analizza i principi dello svilupposostenibile su scala urbana e comprende una visitadi studio al nuovo centro conferenze a emissionizero del REC a Budapest.

Attività di ricercaL’attività di ricerca del TEN si concentra su tre areeprincipali: 1) Green economy 2) Politica ambientale 3) Protezione ambientale.

In particolare, nell’ambito dell’area sulla Greeneconomy, dal 2009 il Centro TEN è coinvolto in una ricerca del Corila, il Consorzio per la Gestionedel Centro di Coordinamento delle Attività di Ricercainerenti il Sistema Lagunare di Venezia, che mira a studiare le opportunità di risviluppo dell’areaindustriale di Porto Marghera, prendendo inconsiderazione anche le questioni ambientali.All’interno di questa ricerca, il Centro TEN si occupadi identificare e analizzare le opportunità e gliostacoli per lo sviluppo dell’area come parco eco-industriale e di altri percorsi sostenibili alternativi. Il progetto si concluderà a marzo 2011.Dal 2010 il Centro TEN, in collaborazione con ilgruppo giovani imprenditori di Unindustria Treviso e il patrocinio del Ministero dell’Ambiente, portaavanti il progetto Innovazione e Sostenibilità. Il progetto mira a sviluppare un percorso, attraversoseminari, visite aziendali e workshop, per creareconsapevolezza a sviluppare nuove capacità nelcampo della green economy tra i giovaniimprenditori. Un libro contenente i risultati del progetto verrà pubblicato nel 2011.Dal 2010 il Centro TEN è anche impegnato nellarealizzazione di un database che raccoglie leinformazioni relative alle aziende italiane green,quelle cioè che sviluppano prodotti ecologici o sonoimpegnate nel miglioramento in chiave sostenibiledei propri processi e filiere di produzione. Il databaseraccoglie già quasi 800 aziende. Le aziende verrannostudiate nel dettaglio per identificarne le strategiedi sostenibilità, a partire da una selezione di 15 aziende, già sotto analisi.

Nell’ambito dell’area 2) Politica ambientale, dal2009 il Centro TEN sta sviluppando una serie diworking paper sulle politiche ambientali in Europa,Italia, Cina, Paesi del centro-sud Europa e dell’Asiacentrale, focalizzati sulle principali questioniambientali trattate nell’Advanced Training Program.Nel 2009, sono stati sviluppati quattro workingpaper, rispettivamente sull’energia e i cambiamenticlimatici in Cina, sulle questioni ambientali nell’AsiaCentrale e sul sistema dei permessi nella gestionedell’acqua. Attualmente sono in fase di realizzazionecinque working paper sui cambiamenti energetici e l’energia in Europa e in Italia, sul monitoraggioambientale in Europa, Italia e Cina, sulle questioniambientali in Russia.Inoltre, nel dicembre 2009 il Centro TEN hacoordinato e ospitato un NATO advanced researchworkshop sul tema dell’implementazione dellaregolazione internazionale per la sicurezzaambientale nel sud-est dell’Europa. Un librocontenente i principali risultati del workshop èattualmente in via di pubblicazione con la casaeditrice Springer.

Nell’ambito dell’area 3) Protezione ambientale, nel2009 il Centro TEN è stato coinvolto in una ricercasui Green ports, portato avanti in collaborazione con

lo IUAV di Venezia per il Centro di ricerca della UE diIspra. Il Centro TEN si è occupato dell’identificazionedei principali impatti ambientali dei porti e deimetodi per valutarli.

Dal 2009 il Centro TEN, in collaborazione con ilCentro TeDIS, sta inoltre lavorando con l’Agenzia diprotezione ambientale della Regione Veneto (ARPAV)sulla modellizzazione del SIMAGE, il sistema dimonitoraggio e di gestione delle emergenze,realizzato da ARPAV in collaborazione con Ente ZonaIndustriale di Porto Marghera (EZI). La ricerca mira a promuovere l’estensione e la replicazione delsistema ad altre questioni ambientali e realtà. La ricerca ha portato ad una serie di pubblicazioni,riportate qui di seguito:

La collaborazione dei centri TEN e TeDIS con ARPAVriguarda anche una ricerca sulla promozione di un’efficace comunicazione dell’informazioneambientale da parte dell’Agenzia verso le autoritàlocali e i cittadini, attraverso l’uso del sito web. Il progetto prevede la realizzazione di un benchmarkdi iniziative rilevanti a livello nazionale, europeo e internazionale, sulla base del quale sviluppare una proposta per ARPAV.

Research ActivitiesThe TEN research activities focuses on three main areas of environmental management and sustainable development: 1) Green Economy 2) Environmental Policy 3) Environmental Protection.

In particular, within the area on Green Economy,since 2009 the TEN Center is involved in a researchof the Corila – Consortium for Coordination ofResearch Activities concerning the Venice Lagoon,aimed at studying redevelopment opportunities for the industrial Area of Venice, Porto Marghera,taking into account also the environmental issues.Within this research the TEN Center studiesopportunities and constraints of the developmentof this area, as an eco-industrial park and othersustainability patterns. The project will end inMarch 2011.Since 2010 the TEN Center, in collaboration with the Young Entrepreneaurs Group UnindustriaTreviso and under the patronage of the ItalianMinistry for the Environment, Land and Sea, carries out theproject on Innovation and Sustainability. The projectaims at developing a pattern for youngentrepreneurs for building capacity and awarenessin the field of green economy, through seminars,site visits and workshops on the topic. A bookcollecting the outcomes of the project will bepublished in 2011.Since 2010 TEN center is also developing a databasecollecting information about Italian green firms, i.e.those firms that are developing green products orare engaged in making their processes and supplychains more sustainable. Almost 800 firms arealready listed in the database. The firms will be then analysed in depth in order to identify theirsustainability strategies. A short list of fifteen firms already under analysis.

Within the area 2) on Environmental Policy, since2009 the TEN Center is developing a series ofworking papers on environmental policies in the EU,Italy, China, South-Eastern Europe and Central Asia

concerning the main environmental issuesdeveloped in the Advanced Training Program. In 2009, four working papers were issued on Energyand Climate Change in China, Environmental Issuesin Central Asia and the Tradable Permits System in Water Management. The five working paperscurrently under development focus on ClimateChange and Energy in the EU and in Italy,Environmental Monitoring in the EU, Italy andChina, Environmental issues in Russia. Moreover, in December 2009 the TEN Centercoordinated and hosted a NATO advanced researchworkshop on International RegulationImplementation for Environmental Security inSouth-Eastern Europe. A book collecting the mainoutcomes of the workshop is under publication by Springer.

Within the area 3) on Environmental Protection, in2009 the TEN Center was involved in a research onGreen ports, carried out in collaboration with theVenice University Institute of Architecture for theEU Joint Research Centre in Ispra. The TEN Centerwas in charge of identifying the mainenvironmental impacts of ports and methods to evaluate them.

As of 2009 the TEN Center, together with the TeDISCenter, is also working in cooperation with theVeneto Region Environmental Protection Agency(ARPAV) on the SIMAGE modelling, an integratedsystem for environmental monitoring andemergency management, developed by ARPAVin collaboration with the Industrial Association

of Porto Marghera (EZI). The research aims atpromoting the extension and replication of thesystem to other environmental issues andterritories. The research has brought to severalpublications, listed below:

The collaboration between the TEN and TeDISCenters and ARPAV also includes a research on the promotion of a successful communication ofenvironmental information between the Agencyand the local authorities and citizens, through awebsite. Cooperazione accademica con le Università di Tongji e TsinghuaDal Programma di Formazione Avanzata con la Cinaè nata anche una collaborazione della VIU con leuniversità di Tsinghua (dal 2005) e Tongji (dal 2007),che ha avviato un programma di scambio distudenti e docenti tra le due università di Pechino e Shanghai e la Venice International University.Nell’ambito del programma di scambio e ricerca laVenice International University ha ospitato nel 20105 studenti iscritti al Master Program on SustainableDevelopment dell’università di Tongji e 9 studenti di dottorato del Dipartimento di Scienze e Ingegneria Ambientale dell’ Università di Tsinghua. Gli studenti, ospiti per 3 mesi nel campusuniversitario sull’isola di San Servolo, hannofrequentato il Globalization Program della VIU,sviluppando lavori di ricerca sui diversi ambiti delloSviluppo Sostenibile (tra cui Gestione delle risorseidriche e dei rifiuti, Inquinamento dell’aria,Bonifiche, Ecologia industriale, Politiche per icambiamenti climatici); altrettanti professori ed esperti delle università e istituzioni locali sonostati coinvolti come tutors nelle attività di ricercadegli studenti cinesi a Venezia, stabilendo cosìnuove relazioni scientifiche, tecniche, istituzionali ed accademiche con le rispettive università di provenienza e i supervisors cinesi.Oltre agli studenti, quest’anno il professor Shi Lei delDipartimento di Scienze e Ingegneria Ambientale ha visitato la VIU nel mese di maggio. Durante taleperiodo il professor Shi Lei ha avviato unacollaborazione con il TEN Center nell’ambito delprogetto sulle opportunità di sviluppo dell’areaindustriale di Porto Marghera, per l’applicazione di metodologie di analisi quantitativa per valutare la sostenibilità e gli impatti ambientali del poloindustriale. Il lavoro avviato insieme prevede larealizzazione di articoli scientifici e presentazione a conferenze internazionali.Il professor Shi Lei ha inoltre tenuto un seminarionell’ambito del corso su Globalizzazione, ambiente e sviluppo sostenibile del Globalization Programdella VIU sull'ecologia industriale in Cina.

Il Centro TEN al World EXPO 2010 di ShanghaiIl 18 settembre il TEN Center della VIU è statopresente all’EXPO di Shanghai presso il PadiglioneItalia in uno degli eventi promossi dal Ministerodell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mareper celebrare i sette anni di cooperazione Sino-italiana nell’ambito della formazione per lo SviluppoSostenibile. L’incontro è stato aperto da UmbertoVattani, Presidente della VIU, e Wang Weizhong Vice-Ministro della Scienza e della Tecnologia cinese ed è proseguito con la testimonianza della VIUsull’esperienza legata al Programma di FormazioneAvanzata e allo scambio di studenti e ricercatori; con l’occasione è stato presentato un Report delleattività intraprese a partire dal 2003. Nella stessa cornice dell’EXPO si è inoltre tenuta la sessione conclusiva del training dedicato al temaValutazione Ambientale Strategica, incollaborazione con la Municipalità di Shanghai, che ha coinvolto esperti italiani e cinesi.

Academic Cooperation– Tongji University and Tsinghua UniversityThe Sino-Italian Advanced Training Program broughtVIU to develop also an academic cooperation withTsinghua University (since 2005) and TongjiUniversity (since 2007), promoting an exchangeprogram of visiting students and professors fromthe two Chinese universities and VeniceInternational University.In 2010, within the framework of the exchange andresearch program, Venice International Universityhosted 5 visiting students from the Tongji UniversityMaster Program on Sustainable Development and 9 Ph.D. students from the Tsinghua Departmentof Environmental Science and Engineering.The students spent 3 months on the VIU campus on San Servolo and attended the VIU GlobalizationProgram, developing research projects on differenttopics related to Sustainable Development (i.e. Water and Waste Management, Air Pollution,Land reclamation, Industrial Ecology and ClimateChange policies); to each student wasallocated/appointed a local tutor who establishednew scientific, technical, institutional and academicrelationships with the Universities and the Chinesesupervisors.

Besides the students, this year Professor Shi Lei fromthe Tsinghua Department of Environmental Scienceand Engineering visited VIU in May. During his stay he carried out a collaboration with the TEN Center onredevelopment opportunities for the industrial area of Porto Marghera, implementing methodologies ofquantitative analysis to assess the sustainability andenvironmental impacts of the industrial area.Moreover, Professor Shi Lei gave a seminar onIndustrial Ecology in China, within the course on Globalization, Environment and SustainableDevelopment of the VIU Globalization Program.

The TEN Center at the Shanghai World Expo 2010On September 18 the TEN Center participated in oneof the events promoted by the Italian Ministry of theEnvironment Land and Sea at the Italian Pavilion ofthe Shanghai World Expo 2010 to celebrate the seven-year activities of the Sino-Italian cooperation programfor Sustainable Development. The celebration eventwas opened by VIU President Umberto Vattani and byWang Weizhong, Vice-Minister of the ChineseMinistry of Science and Technology. On this occasionVIU professors and representatives reported on theAdvanced Training Program and on the student andresearchers’ exchange program; the 2003-2010Cooperation Activity Report was presented during the given speech.The closing session of the training course onStrategic Environmental Assessment also took placeat the EXPO, in collaboration with the ShanghaiMunicipality, involving Italian and Chinese experts.

Centro CeNSIl centro per le Nano-scienze (CeNS) è stato fondatonel 1998 presso la Ludwig Maximilians University di Monaco, uno dei soci fondatori della VIU. La missione del CeNS è la promozione e ilcoordinamento della ricerca interdisciplinare nelcampo della nanoscienza nell’area di Monaco. Ognianno il CeNS organizza un seminario incollaborazione con la VIU. Il titolo del seminario di quest’anno era "Nanoscienze – accomunare le discipline".Scienziati internazionali di alto profilo si sono riunitialla VIU a settembre 2010 per una settimanaintensiva di confronto sul tema delle nanoscienze.Nel corso di interessanti discussioni 24 ricercatorieccellenti di diverse parti del mondo hannopresentato i temi di ricerca più attuali nel campodelle nanoscienze e hanno presentato i punti piùrilevanti delle loro ultime ricerche agli studentilaureati, ricercatori post-doc e professori del CeNS.Nel corso del seminario si sono avute vivacidiscussioni tra giovani ricercatori e scienziati espertinel campo della fisica, chimica e biologia sia in aulache durante le pause nel parco di San Servolo chelungo le passeggiate a ridosso dei canali di Venezia.Oltre alle discussioni i dottorandi e i giovaniricercatori hanno presentato i loro risultatiscientifici ai colleghi e ai relatori invitati alle dueinteressanti sessioni poster. CESifo Venice Summer InstituteIl CESifo Venice Summer Institute, che si tiene ormairegolarmente da oltre dieci anni alla VIU,rappresenta uno degli appuntamenti più importantidel CESifo.L’undicesima edizione del CESifo Venice SummerInstitute, evento ormai molto conosciuto, si è tenuto alla VIU dal 19 al 24 luglio 2010 e hariunito poco più di un centinaio di partecipanti ai seiseminari offerti su temi che spaziano dal ruolo dellaCina nello scenario economico globale al legame traetica ed economia, ai cambiamenti climatici e allecomunicazioni della Banca centrale. Sono intervenutialcuni economisti di fama mondiale come adesempio Michael Keen del Fondo MonetarioInternazionale. Center for NanoScience (CeNS)The Center for NanoScience (CeNS) was founded in1998 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University inMunich, one of the founding members of VeniceInternational University. The mission of CeNS is topromote, coordinate, and bundle interdisciplinaryresearch in the field of nanoscience in the Municharea. Every year CeNS organizes a workshop incooperation with VIU. In 2010 the CeNS workshopfocussed on "Nanosciences – Merging Disciplines".Internationally renowned scientists convened at VIUfor one week of intensive exchange onnanosciences in September 2010. In theirstimulating talks, 24 top-notch researchers from allover the world gave an overview of current researchtopics on nanometer-scale science and presentedtheir latest research highlights to the graduatestudents, post-doctoral researchers and professorsof CeNS. During this workshop, lively discussionsbetween young researchers and experiencedscientists from the fields of physics, chemistry andbiology took place inside of the lecture hall, but alsoduring the breaks on the green yards of San Servoloand while walking along the canals of Venice. CESifo Venice Summer InstituteThe CESifo Venice Summer Institute, held now formore than ten years at VIU, has become one of CESifo’s most coveted conference series.The 11th edition of the highly popular CESifo VeniceSummer Institute, held from 19 to 24 July 2010,attracted slightly over one hundred participants to six workshops dealing with topics ranging fromthe changing role of China in the global economy to the link between ethics and economics, and fromclimate change to central bank communication. Someworld-class economists, such as Michael Keen fromthe International Monetary Fund, delivered thekeynote lectures. Ufficio Europeo dei BrevettiNegli scorsi anni l’Ufficio Europeo dei brevetti e laVIU hanno avviato un progetto di cooperazione con l’obiettivo di promuovere l’istruzione e laformazione in Europa, e specificatamente in Italia,nel campo della proprietà intellettuale dei brevetti. Nel 2010 VIU ha ospitato la quarta edizione delloEuropean Judges Forum in collaborazione con laEuropean Patent Academy e EPLAW (AssociazioneEuropea dei Giudici dei Brevetti). Si tratta di unmomento di incontro interattivo ad altissimo livellotra giudici e professionisti con maggior esperienza in Europa. Il forum annuale è divenuto un think tanka cui partecipano giudici con lunga esperienza nelcampo della proprietà intellettuale per confrontarele proprie esperienze e avanzare proposte checontribuiscano a costruire il futuro assetto legale perle controversie sulla proprietà intellettuale in Europa.

European Summer School in Resource and Environmental EconomicsLa European Association of Environmental andResource Economists (EAERE), la Fondazione EniEnrico Mattei e la Venice International Universitycollaborano con successo, a partire dall’anno 2000,all’organizzazione della European Summer School inResource and Environmental Economics. Il Centro di Formazione in Europrogettazione Il Centro di Formazione in Europrogettazionepromuove attività formative in materia diprogettazione comunitaria e di gestione finanziariae operativa dei progetti europei.Il Centro nasce nel 1999 in collaborazione conl’AICCRE (Associazione italiana del Consiglio deiComuni e delle Regioni d'Europa) con l’obiettivo dicontribuire ad aumentare la competitività dell’Italianell’accesso e nella gestione dei fondi europei e dicolmare il gap di informazioni e capacità rispettoagli altri Paesi europei. Il Centro e la VIU collaborano dal 1999 nellapromozione di programmi di formazione avanzataorganizzando il Master in Europrogettazionededicato alla formazione di professionisti dellaprogettazione e presentazione dei progetti europei.Oltre al Master in Europrogettazione, il Centro a partire dal 2004 organizza anche la “Scuola di gestione dei progetti europei” che affronta le problematiche connesse alla gestione erendicontazione di un progetto europeo finanziato.

A partire dal 2010 la VIU ha messo a disposizione del Centro le proprie competenze tecnico – gestionali e coordina ora insieme al Centro le iniziative diformazione avanzata in materia di progettazionecomunitaria e di gestione finanziaria e operativa dellesovvenzioni europee.Nel 2010, è stata inoltre avviata un’attività disupporto alla didattica tramite un helpdesk cheoffre ai corsisti un tutoring continuo che permetteloro di poter sviluppare idee di progetto originali. European Patent Office (EPO)In the last recent years EPO and VIU launched acooperation project with the aim to contribute to the promotion in the field of patent-relatedIntellectual Property education and training inEurope and specifically in Italy.In 2010 VIU hosted the fourth edition of theEuropean Judges’ Forum, in cooperation with theEuropean Patent Academy and EPLAW.The European Judges' Forum is an interactiveexchange at the highest level between the mostexperienced patent judges and practitioners inEurope. This annual conference has evolved into a thinktank at which Europe's most experienced IP judgesmeet to exchange experiences and make proposalswhich help to mould the future legal frameworkfor IP litigation in Europe.

European Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics Since 2000 the European Association ofEnvironmental and Resource Economists (EAERE),the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and VeniceInternational University have been successfullyrunning their European Summer School in Resourceand Environmental Economics. The broaderobjective of this series of events is to provideadvanced training for young researchers from allover Europe and beyond, on European issues of environmental and resource economics. The Summer School series is addressed to smallgroups of doctoral and post-doctoral students inenvironmental and resource economics from allover Europe and beyond. They follow a traditionalstructure: lectures by professors, Ph.D. students'presentation, reading time, consultation sessionsand social events. The specialised topic varies fromyear to year and reflects issues that are currentlylively areas of new research and policy interest. Thefaculty is comprised of leaders in the field, andoffers an overall coverage of the specialist area. The 2010 edition of the Summer School wasorganised in partnership with the InternationalCenter for Climate Governance (ICCG), a jointinitiative of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei(FEEM)and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini (FGC).The theme of this year’s Summer School was“Climate Change Negotiations”The purpose of the Summer School is to investigatesome of the key issues emerging from the economicanalysis of transboundary pollution, global publicgood problems, and environmental conflict. The focus was on climate change as an importantexample of a worldwide environmental problemrequiring global solutions. The School was divided in two parts. The first partwas devoted to the theoretical models oninternational environmental agreements based on game theory. The review of the basic models wasextended to include dynamic models and theanalysis of uncertainty on the scope of cooperation.The second part focused on some of the climate-economy integrated assessment models elaboratedto evaluate the effects of different climate policies.

Euro-Project training Center The Euro-Project training Center promotes trainingactivities in the field of EU projects and financial andoperational management of EU funded projects. The Center was established in 1999 in cooperationwith AICCRE (the Italian section of CEMR – Councilof European Municipalities and Regions) with the aim of contributing to increasing Italiancompetitiveness in accessing and managingEuropean grants, so to catch up with otherEuropean countries in terms of informationaccessibility and competence.The Euro-Project training Center and VIU have beencollaborating since 1999 in promoting advancedtraining programs for experts in EU-projectplanning and presentation.In 2004, beside the advanced training program, theEuro-Project training Center started promoting theEU-project Management School on topics related to the issues linked to the management andstatements of expenses of EU financed projects.

As of 2010 VIU is contributing to the Euro-Projecttraining Center its technical and managementcompetences and is jointly managing, together withthe Euro-Project training Center, the advancedtraining activities in EU-project and EU-grantfinancial and operational management. In additionto the training program, a further tutoring activityhas been offered to the attendees in order tosupport them in the development of innovativeproject ideas. ICE (Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero)La sesta edizione del corso post laurea Esperto diinternazionalizzazione d’impresa con conoscenza di Lingue Orientali si è tenuta da aprile ad ottobre2010. Ventidue laureati hanno frequentato il programma che è stato organizzato incollaborazione con l’ICE – Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero e con il concorso dell’Istitutoorientale di Napoli. Dopo la fase d’aula, gli studentihanno svolto, un periodo di stage in diverse aziendeprima in Italia e poi all’estero. Obiettivo del corso èsviluppare le competenze necessarie per sostenerelo sviluppo internazionale delle imprese italiane neimercati dell'Europa Orientale, del Medio Oriente e dell'Estremo Oriente.Si tratta del proseguimento di una proficuacollaborazione ed esperienza che ha visto l’85% deidiplomati delle passate edizioni del corso trovarerapidamente lavoro in importanti aziende in Italia e all’estero.La VIU e l’ICE sono impegnati in attività di ricercacongiunte nel campo della logistica, dell’arte e deldesign quale leva su cui puntare per i prodotti del Made in Italy.

International School of Neurological Sciences (ISNV)L’International School of Neurological Sciences (ISNV)nasce nel 1990 e collabora con la VeniceInternational University dal 1998. L’ISNV è divenutaun importante punto di riferimento per la ricerca e la didattica delle neuroscienze, organizzandoregolarmente incontri, seminari e corsi intensivi.Studiosi di tutto il mondo si incontranoregolarmente a San Servolo per contribuire a uninnovativo modello di centro di ricerca e di didatticacollegato ad un circuito internazionale delle piùimportanti istituzioni nel campo delle neuroscienze. A luglio 2010 l’ISNV ha promosso il corsointernazionale avanzato dal titolo: “From BasicKnowledge and Clinical Trials to Rational Prescribingin Epilepsy”.Il corso è stato diretto da Michel Baulac (Francia) e da Steven Schachter (USA). Gli obiettivi del corso,rivolto in particolare a neurologi, farmacologi e ricercatori di base interessati all’utilizzo e allosviluppo di medicinali antiepilettici, erano diformare i partecipanti sull’apprendimento di basedei meccanismi d’azione e dellafarmacocinetica/dinamica degli antiepilettici; sullascelta e sull’utilizzo degli antiepilettici in specifichesindromi epilettiche; sulla programmazione e sullaconduzione di terapie farmacologiche per l’epilessianella pratica clinica; sulla programmazione di studiclinici; sulle strategie correnti per lo sviluppo di nuove molecole antiepilettiche. Il corso, della durata di undici giorni, ha preso avviocon alcuni giorni introduttivi di lezioni frontaliinformative e aggiornate centrate sulla ricerca dibase e su argomenti clinici nel campo dell’epilessia,parallelamente ai “journal clubs”.

Durante la seconda parte del corso, gli studentidivisi in gruppi hanno sviluppato progetti di ricercasu temi legati all’epilessia, sotto la supervisione di 2-3 tutors selezionati tra i docenti del corso.L’avanzamento di ciascun progetto è stata valutata giornalmente e ciascun progetto di ricerca è statopoi discusso collettivamente e valutato durante lagiornalta conclusiva del corso. Hanno partecipato al corso quaranta ricercatori e clinici di trenta paesidiversi; il corpo docente era composto da ventisei tra i migliori scienziati del campo. Il corso è statopromosso sotto l’egida dell’ILAE, la LegaInternazionale Contro l’Epilessia.

ICE (Italian Institute for Foreign Trade)The sixth edition of the graduate course in BusinessInternationalization Processes with knowledge ofOriental Languages took place from April to October2010. Twentytwo graduate students attended theprogram which was organized in cooperation withICE – Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and incollaboration with the Oriental Institute of Naples.After the training period the students were involveduntil December 2009 in a on-the-job experience indifferent companies first in Italy and then abroad.The aim of the program is to develop the necessarycompetencies to sustain the internationaldevelopment of Italian companies on EasternEuropean, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern markets.The course represents the continuation of a fruitfulcollaboration and experience: 85% of the graduates of the past editions of this course have rapidly foundemployment in important companies in Italy andabroad.VIU and ICE are jointly developing researchactivities focusing on Logistics, Art & Design as a leverage for Made in Italy products.

ISNV has become an importantreference point for research and training in the fieldof neurosciences. ISNV regularly promotesmeetings, workshops and intensive training courses.Scholars from all over the world meet every yearand contribute towards an innovative model of research and training center which hasinternational links with the most importantinstitutions in the field of Neurological Sciences.In July 2010 ISNV promoted the AdvancedInternational Course: From Basic Knowledge andClinical Trials to Rational Prescribing in Epilepsy.The course was directed by Michel Baulac (France)and Steven Schachter (USA). The aims of the course,primarily targeted at neurologists, pharmacologistsand basic researchers interested in antiepileptic-drug (AED) use and development, were to teachattendees basic knowledge of mechanisms ofaction and pharmacokinetic/dynamic of AED; howto choose and use different AEDs in differentepileptic syndromes; how to plan and conductpharmacological therapy of epilepsy in clinicalpractice; how to plan a clinical trial; and the presentstrategies for the development of new antiepilepticmolecules. The 11-day course started with some introductorydays of highly informative and up-to-date frontallectures addressing the basic research and clinicaltopics in the epilepsy field in parallel to journal clubs. During the second part of the course, groups ofstudents developed a research project on topicsrelated to epilepsy under the supervision of 2-3 tutors selected among the course faculty. The progress of the project was evaluated daily andeach research project was collectively discussed and evaluated during the last day.The course was attended by fourty researchers andclinicians from thirty countries; the faculty includedtwenty-six of the top scientists in the field. Thecourse was held under the aegis of the ILAE,International League Against Epilepsy.

12ª Mostra Internazionale d’Architettura –Eventi collaterali “Mapping Contemporary Venice – dalla città di oggia quella dei future possibili”Nel 2009 Venice International University hacontribuito alla realizzazione del rapporto OCSEsull’area metropolitana veneziana. L’elaborazionescientifica, durata due anni, ha consentito dimettere a fuoco un territorio sempre più integratodal punto di vista dei processi economici e dellamobilità, cui però non corrisponde un immaginarioaggiornato di riferimenti visivi e simbolici. La VIU, in collaborazione con Moleskine, ha cosìvoluto invitare noti studi di architetti internazionali,un antropologo, designers e studenti a elaborare un racconto visionario della città e a riflettere su Venezia da un punto di vista diverso,reinterpretandola sui taccuini Moleskine,incoraggiando un confronto tra sviluppo economicoe innovazione sostenibile.

12th International Architecture Exhibition –Collateral Events“Mapping Contemporary Venice – from the city oftoday to the Venice of the Future”In 2009 Venice International University contributedto the drafting of the OECD report on the Venicemetropolitan area. This two-year scientific surveyshowed that the territory’s increasinglyconsolidated economic processes and circulationpatterns were hindered, however, by the lack of an updated imaginary of visual and symbolicreferences. Therefore VIU, in cooperation with Moleskine,invited distinguished international architecturestudios, an anthropologist, designers and studentsto present a visionary concept of the city, to outlinethe city of Venice seen in a new perspective, andreinterpreted in Moleskine notebooks, bringingtogether economic development and sustainableinnovation.

This was the key topic of the exhibition entitled“Mapping Contemporary Venice – from the city of today to the Venice of the Future”, presented as a collateral event of the 12th InternationalArchitecture Exhibition. The exhibition offered twosections: Detour, an itinerant project presentingMoleskine notebooks donated by their creators tothe no-profit lettera27 Foundation, here addressingVenice for the first time with a special edition afterprevious stops in New York, London, Paris, Berlin,Istanbul and Tokyo; the second section presentedmyDetour, featuring the projects by twenty VIUstudents who tried to imagine a shared vision of contemporary Venice.In the Venice lagoon, students put down inMoleskine notebooks their ideas and fragments ofexperiences just like the pioneers at the vanguard ofthe 20th Century art movement who used the sameblack notebooks for their spur of the momentwriting and sketching in the streets and cafés ofcities all over Europe. VIU has a new web siteNot only new contents and looks, but buzz and interaction too.In June 2010 Venice International Universitylaunched a brand new interactive Website.The Website, available at www.univiu.org, has beenredesigned in order to provide easy access to clearinformation on courses, programs, conferences,research and training. The user interface has beenimproved and is now more effective and intuitive.The core of the new website is the concept of Webas participation and collaboration – in other words,Web 2.0.The mission of VIU new website is to focus on whatstudents truly need and to create and stimulateinteraction and discussion. VIU wants to be closer to its students and in orderto do so special features have been added to thenew Website.VIU students will have the chance to share photos,ideas, experiences and general suggestions. VIU campusVIU is located on the island of San Servolo, inbuildings that were once a monastery and that wasthen turned into a military hospital, and apsychiatric hospital which was disbanded in 1978.VIU was established on December 15, 1995 on theinitiative of the Province of Venice (which owns the island) in cooperation with the two Venetianuniversities and other international universities.The buildings underwent a meticulous restorationwork and the island now offers a beautiful settingwith views of Venice and its lagoon, a luxuriant parkwith sports grounds, a cafeteria, a bar and severalworks of art by distinguished contemporaryinternational artists.VIU facilities include lecture rooms of various sizes,conference and seminar rooms, offices, a library, pc rooms and broadband wi–fi connection.
