Vemdalen offers activities, events and experiences for the whole family in the mountains – all year round.

We start skiing as soon as the mountains turn white. The season for alpine skiing starts in November and ends in April. You can enjoy three ski areas in Vemdalen:Björnrike, Vemdalsskalet and Klövsjö/Storhogna. Every area has its own unique profile. Our mountains offer substantial vertical drops. If you prefer cross-country skiing you can enjoy skiing both in forest terrain, or high up among the mountain peaks – nordic skiing. In addition to skiing, there are also winter activities, such as snowmobiling, ice climbing, kite and dogsledding.


The hiking season is long and there are several marked trails that lead you to scenic valleys and past mighty waterfalls. You can rent a bike and go pedalling off to the summer´s finest mountain experiences. The whole area is crossed by winding paths and gravel roads for you to discover and explore. Along the rivers, through the great forests to the sparkling lakes and ponds. If you like fishing, you may find your fishing paradise here like so many others. It’s easy access to lakes, ponds and streams waiting. Beautifully embedded in the forest and with the majestic mountains as a backdrop. In addition to these activities, there is fishing, horseback riding, safari, biking, canoeing and golf in the area.

winterALPINE SKIINGFamily-friendly alpine skiing with a range of slopes, enjoyable fun parks, ski cross courses and off-piste skiing. The area has good snow and skiing starts in early November. One skipass can be used for 58 slopes and 35 lifts.

CROSS-COUNTRY & SKI TOURINGWe have 50 km of groomed cross-country trails in pristine surroundings for both classic and skate styles. 180 km of marked trails in the mountains for quiet trips on your touring skis. You can buy ski lessons to polish your technique, get the best waxing tips or a guided tour in the mountains.

ICE CLIMBINGFettjåfallet is a magical waterfall that is 60 metres high and has the best ice from January to March. A short 3 km walk through beautiful forests takes you to the frozen falls. No experience necessary, the guide will show you what to do. Ice climbing is suitable for adventurous types, and you can book a half-day or full-day trip.

SNOWMOBILE SAFARIGuided tours that take you into the vast white expanses, with endless views of the mountains. Choose from half-day or multiday trips. Meals or refreshments are included; food is often cooked over an open fire using locally-produced ingredients.

DOGSLEDDING & ICE FISHINGGlide quietly over snow-covered mountains, with the dogs’ paws on the snow as the only sound. Dogsledding is a fantastic winter activity that suits everyone from 5-year-olds to granny and grandad. Younger children can try short trips. Trips are 1-4 hours and can be combined with ice fishing.

SNOWCATSA wonderfully simple way to get into the terrain. There are daily snowcat trips to rustic cafes in the mountains, or you can book a guided tour for the family that includes lunch cooked over an open fire.

HIKING There are many well-maintained, easy hiking trails to genuine shielings and magnificent views of the mountains – or you can discover our five waterfalls, an adventure for the entire family. If you like picking berries, the marshes gleam with golden-yellow cloudberries in July, and in August the blueberries are ripe. In September you can fill your baskets with lingonberries. Hiking maps with a range of suggestions are available at most receptions and stores. You can also book guided tours.

NATIONAL PARKSonfjället National Park is one of the oldest in Europe and dates back to 1909. It covers 10,400 hectares and is 1278 m above sea level; it also has one of Sweden’s densest bear populations. You can go on bear walks, guided treks or visit a working shieling in the park.

SAFARIThis area has one of Sweden’s densest bear populations, and there are also plenty of elk and beaver. With a little luck you could even see a wolverine. There are bear safaris in Sonfjället National Park, which is where you have the greatest chance of seeing one, or at least its tracks. Bears are very shy.

GOLFWe have two golf courses in beautiful mountain scenery. Klövsjö Vemdalens GK is an undulating golf course that is challenging, with rolling greens and well-placed obstacles. There is also a 9-hole pay and play that is perfect for beginners and youngsters.Hede Vemdalens GK is a stunning experience as it is located on the banks of Ljusnan, with Sonfjället National Park as a majestic and impressive backdrop. It is an open park course with wide fairways and large greens.


RIDETrumvallens fjällridning is out in the wilderness, surrounded by high mountains with a babbling river as its neighbour. The horses are used to Western riding and are very calm. You can book anything from a half-day to a 5-day trek. But those who want a real adventure can book a ranch week with cattle herding in this pristine wilderness. The wonderful thing is that anyone can enjoy this riding experience.

FISHINGThe area has varied fishing with 250 waters to choose from. You can fish for pike or go fly fishing in good grayling and trout waters, trolling for pike, whitefish, grayling, perch and trout. Perhaps the most enjoyable method of all is quietly moving along a gently flowing river with a hook and line. The fishing guide has the best fishing tips for the area. You can also book fly fishing courses.

BIKINGThere is plenty of off-road biking in the area, which is criss-crossed with winding paths and gravel roads just waiting to be discovered and explored. Some of them take you straight out into a wilderness, beside rivers and through forests to glittering lakes and tarns. The road biking is tough and you’ll be battling up and down many climbs. The reward is that you’ll be able to see beautiful mountains from your saddle. Cycle maps are available for purchase at most shops. You can book guided tours and rent bikes in the area.

CANOEING/KAYAKINGTake a guided canoe or kayak safari this summer. Choose between slightly more difficult waters or a mirror-calm lake. A pleasant daytrip is to paddle along Veman down to Lake Håsjön. The river winds through the landscape like a snake, and there are plenty of small sandy beaches that are perfect for picnics and bathing.

CULINARY EXPERIENCESLocal produce – artisan food. The local food producers tempt with beer, cheese, bread, sausages and chocolate – all made here. Local produce is also served in many of the restaurants in the area. For us the local and the nature is in focus. We offer primary high-quality products from forests, lakes and mountain.

ACCOMODATIONChoose between rustic mountain cottages, modern hotel rooms, luxurious apartments, hostels or camping. Many of our accomodation alternatives are right by the slopes or hiking routes and close to restaurants and enjoyments. You can also choose accomodations in a more private setting, imbedded in nature. There are accomodation alternatives from 2 beds to 24 per unit. In Destination Vemdalen there is a total of 17 000 available beds. 9 000 of these beds are privately owned cottages and apartments which can be rented.

BEAUTY & WELLBEINGIn the area you can enjoy a massage at various venues and spend time in the gym.The spa hotel has pools, jacuzzis, and saunas. They also offers massages, facial and body treatments, fitness and wellness classes. You can book a hot outdoor bath tub for an extraordinary fells experience.

Getting hereIt is easy getting to Vemdalen. There are two airports to choose between: Åre/Östersund airport and Svegs airport. From Åre/Östersund airport it takes 1,5 hour by rental car or taxi transfer and from Sveg it takes you 1 hour to get to your adventure in the mountains. You can go directly to Vemdalen by train in winter, in the summer you travel to the railway station in Östersund and go by rental car or taxi for 1,5 hour to Vemdalen.
