What we do, normally

• Judiciously select a handful of combinations of various factors and run those as scenarios. Then, we use these few points of reference to interpolate/extrapolate to cover a large solution space to draw overall conclusions.

Page 3: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

What we can do, easily

• Significantly larger combinations offer two advantages:• They improve the quality of insights as you can identify the tipping points and

not just the different disjoint configurations.

• This large set of solutions can be made available to policy-makers/stakeholders/domain experts as a kind of “expert system”, which they can interrogate meaningfully even without having deep knowledge of the model.

What is VEDAViz?

• A powerful and intuitive web tool for constructing and sharing views of model results.

• Specifically designed for three distinct uses:• Individual analysis

• Collaborative analysis

• Dissemination

Page 14: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

What makes is special?

• VEDAViz makes model results truly accessible to analysts and stakeholders at different technical levels to explore and interpret results, pose questions, and share insights.

• It can convert a model into an expert system that can promote and support logical discussion among policy makers, stakeholders and modelers.

Basic operations

• Filter• allows filtering of multiple elements from each of the

following dimensions: Scenario, Variable, Model, Region and Year. Can define sets of elements often selected together.

• Configure• Any dimension can be: put on x-axis, summed over, used

for small multiples or put on separate tabs

• Render• Several predefined chart types, or even in tabular form

(pivot table), which can be downloaded to Excel

Page 16: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

VEDAViz uses powerful, flexible graphics to facilitate analysis and communication

Page 17: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

All this takes three things

• Create clusters of scenarios

• Run all these scenarios

• Visualize a large number of scenarios in an intuitive way

Page 18: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

Dense scenario experiments

• More points of reference

• Possibility to turn the model into an expert system

Individual dimensions are easy to handle

Page 20: VEDAViz for ETSAP partners

New functionality to combine such dimensions – Scenario clusters• All tables would go into a single file

• One SYNC operation will create the entire cluster

• Case manager will run the cluster as a single case

• Cluster members will be available in browse

• Create DD only will create DD files and scripts in separate wrk folders

VEDAViz offer: modus operandi

• User Provides:• Scenario files that specify each state of each scenario dimension (along with the

model)• SnT file with views for VEDAViz. Each row of each table will be created as a variable.• Scenario Matrix, with a few runs marked to be tested first. Ref case identified.

• Workflow:• KanORS-EMR sends VD files of pilot runs. User may want to tweak the scenario

definition or the matrix.• KanORS-EMR runs the matrix and creates a VEDAViz project with the variables for all

scenarios and scenario differences• Views of SnT file will be created for interactive use.• Set up portals, in discussion with the User.
