BOG Report HighlightsVictor Mucino

The BOG Report for Undergraduate Programs

• Goal 1. Engage undergraduate and graduate students in a challenging academic environment. The BSME provides undergraduate students an environment that aims at the highest standards of achievement in the profession through research and scholarly activities.

• Goal 2. Excel in research, creative activity and innovation in all disciplines. The BSME curriculum places emphasis on the fundamental knowledge, the critical skills and the professional attitudes and expectations that are associated with engineering problem solving.

• Goal 3. Foster diversity and inclusive culture. Mechanical engineering is a diverse and inclusive discipline that provides ample opportunities to all people. The BSME Program strives for openness and inclusiveness when it comes to recruiting, advising and mentoring students to reach their full potential.

• Goal 4. Advance International activities and global engagement. The MAE Department is one of the most prolific and active at WVU in initiating and establishing international exchange and outreach programs, which include collaborative exchanges with universities from various countries in Europe, Asia and South America.

• Goal 5. Enhance the well-being and the quality of life of the people of West Virginia. One of the cornerstones of the accreditation process (the BSME program has consistently received the maximum of 6-year accreditation cycles) is to demonstrate that our graduates have the awareness of the important role that mechanical engineers play in a societal context.

The BOG Report for Undergraduate Programs

• Evidence of a Continuing Demand

• No other institution in the state of West Virginia offers a comprehensive BS, MS and Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering.

• MAE with over 600 students, MAE produces an economic spill of over $25 million; Tuition, living expenses, research expenditures.

• According to the “5XME” Workshop, an NSF sponsored workshop held in Arlington VA in 2007, Mechanical Engineering remains one of the largest engineering disciplines in terms of undergraduate degrees and enrollment

MAE Performance vs. peers

• Emphasis on completing degrees within reasonable time periods• Extreme cases Masters of 3 years+, Ph.D. cases of 7+ years • After 8 years courses loose currency and need revalidation (needs better policy)• Limit 4-5 semesters for MS 6-8 semesters Ph.D.• Contract with GRA… (expectations)• EAC Rules 2 TT Members minimum for MS, 3 for Ph.D.• 3 idle research credits every semester (need to do something with that)…. Require

a Poster… • Need a process for self assessment (not quite like ABET, but a system to measure,

assess and drive improvements) • Enforcement of GRE requirements for graduate admissions• GRE: 75% (720 old, or 156 new scale) Quantitative• Need minimum for Verbal (3.5) and Analytical (60%)• Provisional Students MUST comply within a year or face probation/suspension
