About 2000 fisher families ofModera, who lost their livelihood dueto the restrictions on fishing near theharbour and who were on the brinkof leaving their profession, nowbreathe a sigh of relief after DefenceSecretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa tooksteps to lift the restrictions on fish-ing, former UNP Parliamentarianand Colombo District UPFAOrganiser Lilantha Perera, said.
He was speaking at yesterday’s cer-emonial opening of the Colombo WestChief Organiser Attorney-at-LawSenerath Jayasundera’s office for theforthcoming Presidential Elections.
“With me, 5000 UNP activists fromColombo North crossed over to theUnited Peoples Freedom Alliance,” hesaid.

He said that the Congresswould initiate a consultationprocess through the internet witha view to presenting a petition tothe government calling for votingrights for the Diaspora.

living in IDP camps in Vavuniya. On a request made by PrimeMinister, Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, the Country Director ofRoom to Read, Glenfrey De Mel, ceremonially handed over thesebooks to the PM at his office. The books include Tamil storybooks published by the Organization and English story booksfrom a leading publisher ‘Scholastic’. The total value of thedonation is Rs. 15 million. KANDY - An attempt byvandals to enter the Kandyheadquarters of the UnitedNational Party (UNP) onSunday (10) night, had failed,UNP Central ProvincialCouncil member ChanakaIlapperuma said yesterday(11).
It was discovered Monday(11) morning, that one of thetwo padlocks on the frontdoor of the building was dam-
aged and the damaged pad-lock was replaced by another.
Council Member ChanakaIlapperuma said that the van-dals even if they found accessto the building, they wouldnot be able to find any valu-able articles other than someelection propaganda litera-ture of the common presiden-tial candidate SarathFonseka.
However, ChanakaIlapperuma has lodged a com-plaint at the Kandy police sta-tion.

Opposition CommonPresidential CandidateSarath Fonseka, has claimeddamages in Rs. 1 billion each,from the ‘Silumina’ and‘Sunday Observer’ newspa-pers, for publishing articlesdefamatory of him.
Fonseka’s spokesman,Anura Kumara Dissanayake,MP, addressing a news confer-ence in Colombo, said thatfailure to pay the damagesdemanded within seven days,would result in legal actionbeing instituted against bothnewspapers.
Since the allegations ofcorruption against theRajapaksa regime cannot bedenied, they are trying to tar-nish the image of GeneralSarath Fonseka, who had aclean record during his 40years of service in the Army,he said.
“We challenge the govern-ment to prove that theAmerican company owned byGeneral Fonseka’s son-in-law,had supplied any equipmentto the Sri Lankan Army.”
The leader of theSLFP(M) MangalaSamaraweera said that the‘Sunday Observer’ and the‘Silumina’, were being sued,because unlike the other
newspapers, they had carriedthe baseless accusations as anews item.
Responding to govern-ment allegations thatFonseka had entered intowritten agreements with theparties backing him, includ-ing the TNA, he reiteratedthat their alliance was basedon trust. The only bindingfactor was the common con-viction that the corruptRajapaksa dictatorship has tobe ended for the good of thecountry and future genera-tions to come.
“President Rajapaksa hasgot so scared of GeneralFonseka that he is seen carry-ing Soothsayas (religiousstanzas) and wearing manyreligiously blessed armbands,” Dissanayake said.“President Rajapaksa hasbecome so superstitious, thateven on nomination day,when all other candidateshanded in their papers overthe table to ElectionsCommissioner, DayanandaDissanayake, he went aroundthe table. We wonder if it wasan act of superstition that heeven signed his nominationpaper that day. The majorityof the people are with us andthey will deliver a resoundingvictory for General Fonsekaon January 26”.
