by Rex Clementine Following numerous requests by the Catholic devotees of Negombo, the Archdiocese of Colombo has decided to take the Holy Relic of St. Anthony to Negombo, one of country’s predomi- nantly Roman Catholic areas, popularly known as ‘Little Rome’. The Holy Relic of St. Anthony arrived in Sri Lanka on the 8th of March and was taken to all dioceses of the country including Jaffna. “We got numerous requests from the devotees in Negombo and then it was decided to take the Holy Relic to Negombo for a brief while,” Rev. Fr. Sriyananda Fernando, Director, Social Communications of the Colombo Archdiocese told ‘The Island’ yesterday. The Sacred Relic will be taken to Negombo tomorrow through Grand Street, Sea Street, Muruthana and St. Anthony’s Church in Dalupotha. Meanwhile, the Holy Relic was taken to Liyanagemulla from St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade last evening after Holy Mass presided over by His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis. The Sacred Relic leaves Sri Lanka on the 23rd of March. March 21, 2010: Another asy- lum seeker boat with more than 90 passengers on board has been intercepted in Australian waters, stirring concerns the Christmas Island immigration detention centre could soon be full. The suspected illegal entry vessel was found northwest of Christmas Island shortly after 11pm (AEDT) last night. Initial estimates suggest 92 passengers were on board, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor said in a statement today. The interception takes to 25 the tally of unauthorised asy- lum seeker vessels that have entered Australian waters in 2010. Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the addition of 92 asylum seek- ers - the second largest intake this year - to Christmas Island meant the detention centre would have only 50 beds left. “If we have another boat arrive in the next 24 hours, which is quite possible, then it’s full,” he told AAP today. “We´ll very, very soon be at the stage where they’ll be trans- ferring people to the mainland.” The federal government has previously raised the option of housing asylum seekers at a 550-bed facility in Darwinif Christmas Island’s capacity was exhausted. But Mr. Morrison said the coalition, which supports the reintroduction of temporary protection visas, would be opposed to asylum seekers being brought to the Australian mainland. The government needed to consider other options, like temporarily housing surplus asylum seekers on ships used to accommodate oil rig workers. “I’m not suggesting this is coalition policy. They are options,” he said. Mr. O’Connor said the feder- al government was working closely with Australia’s region- al neighbours to tackle the issue of people smuggling. “People smugglers seek out and exploit vulnerable persons who, having faced uncertainty, conflict and violence, pursue stability and safety,” he said. The asylum seekers will be transferred to Christmas Island for security, identity and health checks, and their reasons for travel will be established. Secretary, Maithripala Sirisena, is confi- dent that the SLFP-led ruling coalition could secure four out of five seats in the Polonnaruwa electoral district. According to the veteran politician, the Opposition is in disarray in the dis- trict. Speaking to The Island at the Mahaweli Centre last Wednesday (March 17), he said the UPFA could win five of the eight seats in the neighbouring Anuradhapura district. Minister Sirisena said that the JVP was unlikely to win even a single seat in the North Central Province at the forthcom- ing parliamentary elec- tion. At the April 2004 par- liamentary election, the JVP contested on the UPFA ticket and won 36 seats. The Marxist party also secured three National List slots, which made it the third largest political party in the sixth parliament. The JVP is contesting the April 8 election on the DNA (Democratic National Alliance) ticket. The NC Province com- prises Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts. At the last parliamentary election, the UPFA won three out of five seats. Maithripala Sirisena, his brother-in-law, Siripala Gamlath, and S. K. Subasinghe, (JVP nomi- nee), were elected, while Earl Gunasekera and C. A Suriyaarachchi secured the remaining slots for the UNP. The lat- ter subsequently switched his allegiance to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, along with almost 20 other UNPers. But JVPer Subasinghe did not join Wimal Weerawansa’s revolt (over two years ago), forcing the National Freedom Front (NFF) to field Raja Ranjith Gunaratne in the Polonnaruwa district to contest the April 8 elec- tion. Had Subasinghe sided with the rebel group, he would have been Weerawansa’s nomi- nee in Polonnaruwa. Subasinghe leads DNA candidates in Polonnaruwa. Like in the Southern Province, where all seven JVPers, elected on the UPFA ticket at the last parliamentary election, remained loyal to Somawansa Amarasinghe, Subasinghe and two oth- ers, K. D. Lal Kantha and Ranaweera Pathirana, elected from Anuradhapura, had rejected Weerawansa’s overtures. Both Lal Kantha and Ranaweera Pathirana are in the fray in Anuradhapura, along with former JVP/UPFA National List MP, Wasantha Samarasinghe. Although the government believed that Lal Kantha would switch his alle- giance to President Rajapaksa in the run-up to the January 26 presi- dential election, the JVP heavyweight remained with the party. Pathirana is credited with revealing waste, corruption and irregularities in parlia- ment. A query raised by him in parliament, over a year ago, revealed about 40 ruling party politi- cians receiving a Rs. 100,000 housing allowance. Wasantha Samarasinghe quit his National List seat to con- test the last election to the North Central Provincial Council. Although he suc- ceeded, the party lost the National List vacancy to former LTTE commander, Vinayagamoorthy Muralidaran alias Karuna, who subsequent- ly received SLFP member- ship. Karuna, now a Vice- President of the SLFP, is on the UPFA National List. At the last election, the UPFA took five out of eight seats in Anuradhapura. While Lal Kantha and Ranaweera Pathirana secured two out of five UPFA seats, Duminda Dissanayake (North Central Province Chief Minister’s son), S. M. Chandrasena and Tissa Karaliyedde secured the remaining seats. The UNP had to be sat- isfied with three seats (P. Harrison, Chandani Jayasinghe and W. B. Ekanayake). Ekanayake subsequently crossed over to the UPFA. JVP nominee Weerakumara Dissanayake, who entered parliament at the last elec- tion on the UPFA ticket from the Puttalam elec- torate, is Weerawansa’s nominee in Anuradhapura. Both the JVP and NFF will not find it easy in the North Central Province, where the ruling party stands to secure a lion’s share of the seats. The assassination of Opposition leader of the NCP, Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera, over a year ago, weakened the UNP to a great extent. Had he sur- vived the LTTE attempt, the UNP would have been in a far stronger position, though he could not have thwarted a government victory. The armed forces’ tri- umph over the LTTE last May will give a mega boost to the government’s campaign in the NCP, whereas the Opposition is struggling to save its face. A split in the Opposition vote, due to the UNP and JVP contesting the poll on their own, will be to the advantage of the govern- ment, particularly in the NCP. Political sources said that the Opposition cam- paign was in a mess due to the lethargic attitude of the leaders. Although Maithripala Sirisena has ensured a peaceful envi- ronment in Polonnaruwa, the situation in Anuradhapura is deterio- rating with political thugs going to the extent of tar- geting the police. JVP faces heavy defeat, NFF unlikely to impress UPFA set to win NCP comfortably NOTICE It is with profound sorrow we announce the demise of MR.
