“VAARANA MAAYIRAM”

In the SriVaishnava sampradayam, we have twelve azhwars of whom Andal is prominent. Though Andal is one of these twelve azhwars, she is considered to be the consort of Sriman Narayanan.Though perumal( krishnan) had incarnated Himself in many forms, the Dharma was still getting depleted. So, He sent the Azhwars to sing His praises, and propogate Dharma once again. Thus, twelve azhwars, who are considered to be the nithya-suri(s) of Sriman Narayanan in one form or the other , incarnated in this world.

The lineage of azhwars started with the Mudhal-azhwars-(poigayar-bhutthathar-peiazhwar).The other azhwars were, Namazhwar,Madhurakavigal, Andal, Periyaazhwar, Thondar-adi-podi azhwar, Thirumalisai azhwar,Kulasekhara azhwar , Thiruppan azhwar and Thirumanghai azhwar. These azhwars sang the praises of the Lord in Dravida Tamil, which is presently called The Nalayira Divya Prabhandham or the 4000 divine songs. The SriVaishnavites consider this to be the Veda sArAmsham for them.

Sri Mahalakshmi, incarnated herself as a little baby near the Thiru-thuzhazh( tulasi tree) vruksham of Periyaazhwar on Adi mAsam, poora nakhshatram on the auspicious Friday. When Periyaazhwar came to pluck flowers to make garland for the Lord, he found a baby near the tulasi tree. He immediately took her and named her “KODHAI”. He thought, that Lord Himself has sent this baby to him. She was ‘azhonijai’ (not born to mortal beings). He brought her up by feeding her with bhakthi for Krishna. She was always engrossed in the leelas of krishna described by the latter.

Over a period of time, her love for Krishna was boundless. She was desperate in getting married to Him. Hearing this, the people living in SriVilliputhur started mocking at her. But, Periazhwar always induced in her, the love for the Almighty. Yes!!Indeed, the leelas of Khannan is so allergic, that no one can escape from it. Periazhwar adviced her to do Khathyayini nombh. As how, the Gopikas of Dwapara yuga performed this vrata, to attain he union with Srikrishna, Andal also performed this vrata during the Marghazhi mAsam with her friends.

She performed this vrata for thirty days, and rendered one song everyday to the Almighty. These thirty songs that she sang are known as Thiruppavai. But, since Krishna did not appear, she was vexed. And out of her devotional outpourings, she sang the Nachiyar thirumozhi (143 songs) . The Varana-mayiram is one of these out-pourings. In this, she describes her dream to her friends. Guess what the dream was..Yeah! It was getting married to SriRanganatha…. :-D
