Powers of Attorney - It’s a no brainer Mental capacity is the ability to make your own decisions. An event such as an accident or a stroke, or an age-related issue such as dementia can result in losing capacity. The question arises, if you become unable to make your own decisions in the future, someone else will need to make decisions for you.

By creating Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) when you are healthy, for financial decisions, or health and care decisions, or both, you can choose people you trust to make decisions for you and empower them to look after your affairs day to day. Without an LPA or a valid Enduring Power of Attorney, no one has legal authority to manage your finances. Those closest to you could be faced with an application to the Court of Protection to give them authority to do so.

The Court of Protection has the power to appoint a deputy or deputies who are authorised to make decisions on behalf of someone who has lost capacity. The majority of deputyship orders issued by the Court relate to finances. Health and welfare deputyship orders are rare.

A financial deputy appointed by the Court has similar responsibilities to a financial attorney and must follow the principles set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005. However, an attorney you have chosen yourself, appointed under a registered LPA, is able to start acting for you straight away whereas a prospective deputy has to submit an application to the court disclosing all finances and must notify relatives. The prospective deputy has no authority to act until a deputyship order is issued. As the volume of cases continues to rise year on year, the Court moves slowly and there can be lengthy

delays. An application for that all-important order can take months, and in that time bills could go unpaid while the bank accounts are inaccessible. This can put the family under increasing financial and emotional pressure at a very difficult time.

In general attorneys appointed by an LPA are able to handle financial matters on a day to day basis as they see fit. By contrast, a deputyship order sets out what the deputy can and cannot do, and actions that are not authorised by the original order may require the deputy to make further applications to the Court, with the accompanying delays that entails.

Deputies are also supervised by the court on an ongoing basis, and required to prepare a report each year detailing any financial decisions that were made, the status of the bank accounts and the financial transactions that were carried out. In addition, deputies are required to enter into a security bond, a type of insurance policy designed to financially protect the incapable person in the event of a deputy mismanaging the finances in their care.

You can see why we strongly recommend that clients have LPAs in place enabling them to choose who they wish to make such decisions in future if the need should arise, and to make sure there is protection in place for their family.

I thought I would share this with you. We have recently had a bad attack from slugs, which seem extremely partial to Lupins. We read that slugs really like beer so we have sunk a few plastic cups in the ground and fi lled them with beer. Well, what a success; the bar is open every night and the slugs are wallowing in it, literally! It does seem to work and the Lupins are surviving. Don’t worry; this is not the start of garden tips from the Jotters! If you are off on your family holidays later this month, have a wonderful time.

From the first moment you walk through the gates and see the sign saying ‘You are now entering the 15th Century. Laws of the year 1455 now apply. You have been warned’, you will be transported back in time in a unique, tree-surrounded seven meadow location, shielding you from the modern world outside. You can then go forward to explore the many areas full of all the wonders of the Middle Ages.

This Mediaeval Festival was started by Legend Presents in 2002 at Berkeley, Gloucestershire and ran there successfully until 2007 when the site flooded. After four years of looking for the perfect site, the magical Loxwood Meadow was found and The Loxwood Joust has now been running here since 2012. Starting as a one weekend event, always the first weekend in August, it expanded in 2015 to accommodate the growing interest and is now a permanent fixture on the first two weekends of August.

The Loxwood Joust is the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the land and explores the full richness of our country’s grand heritage with an unrivalled programme of mediaeval

mayhem. This is your chance to step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family.

As you enter the realm of the Middle Ages, prepare yourself, for you will be greeted by a sight not seen on these lands for hundreds of years, a living medieval encampment. Here in the Living History Village, the inhabitants go about their daily life with the smiths sharpening swords and axes as their good wives cook stew over steaming pots. In the battlefield beyond, harken to the call of booming cannon fire, the clash of steel on steel and experience the authenticity of the mighty battle taking place in front of your eyes.

As with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment were a grim affair. Murderers were given the same trials as apple thieves and both usually met the same grizzly end. Mediaeval life was a terrifying one. But nothing brings that reality to light more than the gruesome and frightening apparition that is the Executioner. Dressed in all black, wielding an axe or scythe, this fearsome arbiter of the law was once all that stood between the good folk of the realm and the gallows.

Over the bridge dwells the den of the witches and their black cauldron, so prepare to be bewildered or enlightened by their strange and arcane delights. These creatures most foul will lure and beguile you with their spells and incantations, but be brave and you may be rewarded instead with a charm or two.

Nestled in the heart of the woodland area you will find the Mead Shack. Loxwood Joust Mead is the ‘Nectar of the Gods’ and this golden liqueur of poets, lovers and kings can be sampled and enjoyed whilst absorbing all this unique experience has to offer. At the main concert stage the internationally acclaimed

Mediaeval Baebes will entice, entrance and soothe their audience with magical voices that will be heard all across the Loxwood fields, and it is here that you will also see the hypnotic belly dancers and will laugh along with the talented performing mummers.

Beyond the woodlands lies the mighty jousting arena. In the heart of the Midsummers Meadow the knights come to earn honour and valour before the watching eyes of the crowd. With the pounding of horses’ hooves as they thunder their way across the field, the magnificent fully armoured jousting knights present a fast-paced, all action jousting tournament that will always amaze and astound.

So as you venture forth, you must take your time to look around at the variety of treats in store. When not in flight, the hawks, owls, falcons and other birds of prey, rest on their perches giving you the chance to see the hunters of the skies up close. And you cannot miss the Mediaeval Market Place where traders and hawkers vie for your attention. Traders skilled in authentic medieval techniques and products bring their wares to sell, just like peddlers of old. Try to see if you cannot hawk a bargain at Traders Row where the merchants have gathered together, bringing with them trinkets and treasures and all manner of goodies for your pleasure.

As companies of actors, wandering minstrels, the Court Jester and dance troupes entertain and delight throughout the day, ‘Sir Lancelot the Bald’ will be found resplendent in tights. This bright character will have you in stitches with his improbable stunts and cheeky comedy. See him roll crystal balls across his head, juggle copious amounts of fire and most amazingly of all, with support from the audience, walk a rope whilst playing with some deadly sharp knives.

Now the question to ask is have you ever wondered what mediaeval underwear looked like? If indeed they even wore underwear back in those days. And just exactly how long did it take to get dressed in all that garb? How does one tie a corset? Why did men wear tights? And exactly what is a Coif? All this and more is answered in person by the Mediaeval Housewife, as she presents to you the dirty laundry of the Middle Ages.

Whilst exploring the abundance of all things is mediaeval, you will locate the Loxwood Tavern and a surrounding collection of foods and drinks stalls. Gorge yourselves on the many varied and wonderful foods on offer and make sure you rest a while on the hay bales scattered about whilst you take in the living history around you.

And then in the far corner of the Midsummers Meadow nestles the Children’s Kingdom. A festival within a festival, where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency, there is all manner of exciting activities from Have a Go Archery, Pelt the Peasant, Face and Wound Painting and of course the, Bouncy Castle.

Encamped within the Children’s Kingdom you will also find sword school, giving both adults and children the chance experience the life of a knight in training and more importantly learn some longsword moves. Here you will have the opportunity to test your bow skills against an exciting range of targets. Would you have been able to feed your family back in medieval times? Can you hit the 3D life-size boar and stag?

So there you have it, The Loxwood Joust is a festival like no other, one of history and discovery and everything else in between. You are welcomed to your heritage and all are invited to an exciting mediaeval day out, as history comes to life each day from 10am to 6pm. Look at our online competitions for a chance to win family tickets - www.vantagepointmag.co.uk.

There is a lot to consider when getting a new dog.

Whether you have had dogs for years, not had a dog since your childhood or a fi rst time dog owner, it is a very exciting time but not a decision to be rushed. The fi rst things to consider are why you want a dog and how it is going to fi t into your life.

Dogs can make excellent companions, be fun and loyal members of the family and get you out into the fresh air, even on the wettest and windiest of days. Everyone knows that dogs are a responsibility and your life will have to change to accommodate their needs, but there is much more to consider than that.

First is the cost. You need to look far beyond the cost of simply buying your new puppy. Most people will know to budget for monthly food and annual vet’s bills, but there are many more costs to think about. Dog insurance is certainly advisable, and you should shop around to fi nd a good policy at a good price. Make sure you know exactly what cover you are getting for your monthly payments and bear in mind that the cost per year is likely to increase as the dog ages. For example, you will pay a premium to have a ‘for life’ cover but it means that if a condition is diagnosed at any age this will be continued to be covered under your policy for the whole of your dog’s life, otherwise it is often excluded after the fi rst year.

You may need to make adaptions to your car like a dog crate or dog bars, and you should certainly make sure your garden is dog proof. That means closing any holes in the fence, and making sure any gates are secure.

You will also need to consider the costs of day-to-day care as well as the occasional kennels or dog sitter when you are away on

holiday. If you are out at work during the day, be realistic about the costs of a dog walker or dog day care. Just like child care these can quickly mount up.

If you have never had the responsibility of owning your own dog before, I would recommend borrowing a friend’s dog for the weekend. This will give you a taste for the day-to-day ups and downs of owning a dog. You will have to forfeit that long Sunday morning lie-in to get up and let the dog out for the loo, but on the plus side you do get to enjoy a nice morning walk before lunch.

Puppies don’t come ready trained and, although toilet training is usually top of people’s minds, the fi rst few months are critical for lots of other things too. Getting your puppy well socialised is key to having a confi dent, well-rounded dog which is good with other dogs and people, especially children - and this takes time.

It is certainly worth buying a dog training book, and making time to go to puppy socialisation classes, but this alone won’t be enough. You have to be out there with your dog, guiding it through all these new experiences. If you start to see unwanted behaviour don’t wait and allow it to become learnt, go and seek advice. There are dog behaviourists that can do one-on-one visits to work through problems like snapping at other dogs, separation anxiety when left alone, or if you are struggling to master recall. There is much more to consider, but for now

Emma Marchington MRCVS, of Brelades Vets in Dorking, offers advice to anyone thinking of getting a dog

let’s look at that initial choice – which dog is best for you and your lifestyle. Firstly you need to decide whether you want a puppy or an adult dog – or even something in-between. Gun dogs, for instance, are often sold part-trained at adolescence.

Your next decision is whether to have a male or female dog. This is largely a matter of personal preference and there is no right or wrong decision. There are lots of clichés and although there seems to be an element of truth in these stereotypes, in my experience it often just comes down to the individual personality of the dog. Females are typically thought to be easier to train as a result of being less distractable while male dogs are meant to be more loving and be focused on people’s attention. Saying that, my labrador bitch is very loving but very easily distracted whilst training, so there are no hard and fast rules.

You need to think about your home and environment as a whole when choosing a suitable dog. For instance, do you have a garden or easy access to nearby outdoor space for toileting? Do you have good safe walks nearby? If you are trying to fit in a decent morning walk with your dog in the week around a school run or work, then having easy access to a local walk will be very important.

It is likely that the whole family will be sharing the day-to-day chores, and having a dog will certainly impact everyone’s life. Everyone should be on board and actually want a dog. It can be a good idea to sit down and figure out a typical week, to make sure everyone is committed and able to do their share. It is important to have a contingency plan if an emergency comes up, as the dog will still need feeding, walking and looking after regardless. It is good to sound out neighbours, friends or other family members for these emergencies.

Deciding on a breed is much like choosing the sex of your dog and is a very individual decision. Some people will say that certain breeds are best suited to certain lifestyles or situations – if only it was that simple, although there is some truth in it. If you live in a flat then a Great Dane will be less suitable than a Shih Tzu.

There is a lot of guidance online. For instance, the Kennel Club have a very informative breed

P-p-p-pick up a puppy!

Which breed is for you?People often try to match breeds with their lifestyle and family situation, but things are never that simple. Your choice will be influenced by personal tastes and perhaps your experience with dogs you grew up with. It is important to do some research, however, to make sure that the dog you’re considering is suitable for your situation. Here is a quick guide to the characteristics and needs of some of the most popular breeds.

Labradors are widely regarded as a good all-round dog equally suited to family life or working as a gun dog trained to retrieve. They do need a substantial amount of exercise but generally will settle well in-between long walks. Labradors can be prone to inherited eye, elbow and hip problems so if you are getting a puppy do make sure that both the parents were throughly checked.

Cocker spaniels are another popular family dog known to be highly sociable and intelligent. They are smaller than labradors but certainly just as lively and will spend much of their time hunting through the undergrowth when out on walks. Like a labrador, they will require a substantial amount of exercise and have a long life-span.

Dachshunds were originally bred for working: going underground or tracking game. Despite their size they still need significant walking and have a long life-span, averaging over 12 years. They can be quiet independent and single-minded as well as being very loyal and playful. Sadly they are prone to back problems which can require specialist surgery.

Greyhounds are often exceptionally good with people and despite being quite large dogs are known to be gentle. However their instinct to chase and kill is very much in their genes, and they find it hard to resist chasing smaller animals such as rabbits, cats and even smaller dogs. It is possible to cat-train greyhounds but this requires patience and plenty of time. Many greyhounds are available to rescue after being raced, and there are specialist rescue charities that you can contact directly.

information centre covering over 200 breeds on their website, giving guidance on size, average exercise requirements, grooming and average life span.

If you have a breed in mind, it is defi nitely worth considering that some breeds have inherited illnesses that they can be more prone to. The more you know going into the decision-making process the easier it will be to identify possible problems, and the more likely you are to end up with a dog that suits you and your lifestyle.

Remember that there are many dogs in rescue centres up and down the country that are desperate for homes. Do bear in mind that with a rescue dog you do not always know their full history or what past experiences they may have gone through. Most rescue centres are very good at highlighting dogs which have issues, for example with other dogs or children. Some issues may take time to show; for example the dog may be good with people out of the house but not good when new people come into their home.

If you have young children then getting a dog brings added responsibilities. No matter how good a dog seems with kids, you are responsible for teaching your children to respect boundaries around the dog, and not leaving them alone with the dog or in vulnerable positions (for example next to the dog when you feed it).

It takes a special sort of owner with the time to dedicate to dogs which have known issues but it can be extremely rewarding to rebuild the trust and confi dence of a vulnerable dog. Realistically, though, not all issues can be fully resolved and coping mechanisms may need to be in place for the rest of the dog’s life – and this goes back to making an informed decision right from the start.

The important thing is not to rush into a decision. Enjoy researching which dog is right for you and open up a whole new exciting chapter to share with your new best friend.

Collies were originally used for herding, often working closely with farm animals. They are typically extremely loyal, very intelligent, and enjoy working closely with their owner whilst being physically and mentally stimulated. There are some excellent agility classes and clubs which will be great fun for both of you.

German Shepherds were originally used for herding and fl ock guarding and nowadays are often used by the military and police. They are loyal, trainable and highly intelligent. They can also be prone to hip problems so make sure you do your research. They are big dogs with males averaging between 30-40kg and require a lot of exercise.

Border Terriers were also originally working dogs, used to kill vermin and go to ground. Terriers typically are tenacious and charismatic and can be feisty. That said borders tend to be one of the more relaxed terriers. They stay at a medium to small size, and are bright, energetic dogs with naturally good temperaments.

Yorkshire Terriers remain very small dogs and have a long life expectancy, often well over twelve years. They do not require exceptionally long walks and stay light enough to carry comfortably. They often love attention but don’t let their size fool you as they are often quite bold and independent as well as being inquisitive. They can be tricky to toilet train – but so can any dog.

Which breed is for you?

Getting HumphreyHumphrey was my fi rst dog and it took me a long time to decide that I could accommodate a dog in my life. Being single, busy editing this magazine and also a councillor, I knew I would need good back-up from friends and family, which happily was forthcoming. I also needed a relaxed dog who could come with me to work

and one I could leave at home at times when I was busy. Being a walker, I was happy with a dog that needed exercise and so Humphrey the black labrador joined me in

Over the summer Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley is offering an out-of-this-world adventure for families. From 23rd July-4th September, RHS Garden Wisley will be staging cosmic events for children of all ages. There will be space-themed garden trails, cosmic welly-wanging, stratospheric storytelling, intergalactic adventures in cardboard boxes and even the chance to construct a giant solar system on display in The Glasshouse throughout the summer.

The space-themed activities have been inspired by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening ‘Rocket Science’ campaign, which saw 2kg of rocket seeds sent to the International Space Station last year. The seeds spent several months in microgravity, orbiting the Earth at a speed of 17,000mph under the care of British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake. In January, the astronaut sent a special video message to schools from the ISS across the country inviting them to help with this unique space food mission.

The seeds have now been returned to Earth and are being grown by hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren across the UK. It is a huge experiment to investigate the impact of space travel on seed growth. This voyage of discovery will help us find out what growing plants in space can teach us about life on Earth and whether we can sustain human life in space in the future. Results will be collected and analysed by biostatisticians and published later in 2016, feeding into the real life work taking place in space science research.

Claire Custance, RHS Skills Development Manager, said: “This is a thrilling time for us as well as children and young people up and down the country taking part in this unique project. We are very excited to be able to work with the UK Space Agency to engage so many young people in horticulture and science.”

Children and young people of all ages (from early years right up to university level) and all abilities are encouraged to take part in the initiative. To register for Rocket Science, organisations will be asked to either log into the RHS Campaign for School Gardening website or become a member of the Campaign. Membership is free and includes many benefits including a free welcome pack.

RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey will be encouraging young space-explorers to take part in their very own space mission to Mars, on a specially-created space-themed trail around the gardens this summer:

“This is the captain. You are on a Space Mission. In order to survive beyond Earth we need some very important essentials for life. Without these, life will be

either impossible or very difficult for any length of time. Explore the Garden to collect the 7 ingredients to help us live and explore Space and visit Mars. Solve the puzzles on your way in order to find the secret launch codes to ensure the rocket ship takes off”.As well as the space trail, during the summer school holidays, ongoing activities at Wisley will focus on a different area of Space:

The second week’s (1st-7th Aug) theme is Rockets and Time. Enjoy storytelling (3rd August), Space Cookery (£10 per child, 1st and 2nd August), and Falconry (6th and 7th August).

The third week’s activities will be themed around Planets (8th-14th August). Sow and grow a Sempervivum ‘red planet’ (8th and 9th August), make your own 3D

planet (11th and 12th Aug), and meet the ‘alien’ creepy crawlies from our own planet (13th and 14th August)!

The fourth week will look at Comets (15th-21st August): Make your own edible comets and shooting stars (£10 per child, 16th August), create a comet wand (18th August) and a comet scratch bookmark (19th August).

Our recent feature on future motoring attracted several queries asking whether electric cars were really as limited in use as the article suggested. In part, these queries were driven by the continuing promotion of zero-emissions electric cars, not least from our Government, often promising climatic doom unless we all immediately forsake our beloved petrol (and diesel) cars and buy clean, green, electric wheels. Indeed, the Government’s stated objective is for every car on the road to be zero-emissions by 2050.

So in this feature we look at the real-world, hands-on use of electric cars in more detail, to consider whether we should indeed all jump aboard the Government’s hoped-for electric revolution.

Few things polarise motoring discussions more than the subject of electric cars. Proponents argue that they save the planet, whilst detractors raise a number of real, and imagined, drawbacks; not least the thorny question of where the electricity to power them is going to come from at a time when the UK’s generating capacity is reducing steadily, due to the EU demand for closure of the most polluting power stations.

Let’s deal with this one fi rst. Both the UK Department of Transport and the Royal Academy of Engineering have estimated that if the UK switched to electric vehicles, electricity demand would rise about 16%. Whilst this would represent a signifi cant increase in electricity demand, the take-up of electric cars will inevitably be gradual, and so the long-term power supply situation should be manageable – provided of course that the Government presses ahead quickly with developing additional generating capacity. In fact, the UK’s electricity supply problem is perhaps not so much one of having enough maximum capacity as managing the peaks and troughs of electricity demand such as occur when we all switch on our kettles after watching a favourite TV programme. Intriguingly,

having a sizeable number of suitably-designed electric cars in the UK could off er the prospect of these being used to manage those peaks in demand by using the electrical energy stored in their battery packs, when parked and plugged-in, to feed into the electricity grid in times of shortage, recharging when the electricity demand - and price - was lower.

Nay-sayers also delight in reminding us that whilst electric cars may be emissions-free on the road, generating the electricity to power them just moves the emissions to the power stations. However, this ironically becomes much less of an issue as the more polluting coal-fi red power stations are closed down. And this objection also conveniently overlooks the fact that production of petrol and diesel in itself demands the use of vast amounts of electricity. In fact, some analysts believe that the electricity saved by not refi ning petrol and diesel would be enough to power every vehicle by electricity. So, surely, it would be far better to ‘cut out the middleman’ and use this electricity to power cars directly.

Another frequent concern is that electric car battery packs may be both short-lived and expensive. Experience, however, has

demonstrated that typically batteries last at least eight years, indeed many electric car manufacturers warrant their batteries for at least that long. Moreover, batteries rarely fail without warning: their performance simply reduces gradually over a long period of time, so an eight-year-old battery may still have 80% or so of the capacity of a new one. Price-wise, new batteries do not seem to be eye-wateringly expensive either, certainly when viewed against the several-thousand-pound repair bills which are entirely possible with a conventional car of similar age.

Indeed, the running costs of an electric car overall should be far less than for a

conventional petrol or diesel motor. Some public recharging points such as the Ecotricity network currently provide free electricity, and even if you need to recharge from your domestic supply this will still only cost around one-quarter of the cost of petrol or diesel fuel. Servicing costs should be less, too, as electric cars are generally simpler and more reliable. So, on running costs, we have a big plus for electric cars, even without taking into account any savings from their exemption from the London Congestion Charge, not to mention highly attractive tax rates for company car users.

Some folk worry that they will be stranded by not being able to fi nd a public charging point when they need one, however there are probably more than you think. As of March 11th this year there were over 10,000 charging connections available in the UK, spread over almost 4,000 locations. In a sign of how quickly the network of charging stations is developing, over 3,000 of these charging connections have been installed in the last 12 months alone. There are also often allegations that these are frequently broken and unusable, however in our testing of a range of electric vehicles, we never encountered an out-of-service charger. Neither did we ever fi nd every charger at any site all in use at the same time, either. More frequently, there are a row of chargers sitting empty and hopeful of customers!

One frustration, though, with fi nding a public charging station is that there are a number of diff erent charging networks and charging connector types, many of which are incompatible with each other. So a good tip for anyone contemplating an electric car is to fi rstly identify what type of charging connector is required, as well as what maximum charge rate the car

will accept, and then review the range of locations for this type of charger by using one of the on-line charger maps such as www.z a p m a p . c o . u k .

On the positive front, an i n c r e a s i n g number of charging stations are now off ering multiple connection types, and some networks are also allowing customers who are signed-up to other networks to use their charging stations.

Most electric cars now off er some form of rapid charging, meaning that you can take on a useful amount of charge in as little as 30 minutes. For example, the Kia Soul EV can charge to almost 80% of capacity in that time. Be wary of cars which can only charge at a low rate, as fully charging the batteries can then take up to 12 hours, which demands considerable skill in forward planning!

The most common electric car worry, however, is the dreaded ‘range anxiety’ - the fear of running out of juice – and this can indeed be a signifi cant issue. Most electric car models claim ranges in excess of 100 miles: the Kia Soul EV for example claims 132 miles, whilst the Nissan Leaf with a 24kW battery claims 124 miles. Beware, though, for these are idealised fi gures which are highly unlikely to be achieved in the real world. Factor in some motorway driving, using lights, wipers and heater or air-con and the range will drop dramatically.

For example, the Nissan Leaf we tested averaged around a 100 mile range in gentle summertime running. Motorway running however dropped this to less than 70 miles. Our Kia Soul came closer to the manufacturers fi gure at 120 miles between charges, although this too dropped to around 80 miles in admittedly terrible winter conditions with lights, wipers and heater all sapping that all-important range. Given better weather conditions, the range of the Kia would doubtless have increased to even closer to the manufacturers fi gure, making the Soul EV an interesting and more eff ective alternative to the market-leading Leaf. Regardless, though, whilst extended motorway journeys are not impossible with an electric car, they are hard work: plan on needing to visit every second motorway service area for a charge top-up during your journey.

Do range limitations of this sort work for you? If they do, then great: welcome to the world of low-cost electric motoring. If, however, this is just too much of a restriction, then fear not – there are a number of alternatives.

If your pockets are deep enough, consider a Tesla. Their novel engineering results in a practical range of some 250 miles for their Model S, whilst their recently-announced mid-range (and mid-priced) Model 3 promises over 200 miles. However, the Model 3 is for the future, deliveries into the UK are unlikely until late 2017 at the very earliest.

More practical for most of us is a ‘Range Extender. Put simply, this is a full electric car fi tted with an auxiliary engine which is used purely to recharge the battery when necessary. The increase in range will obviously depend on the size of fuel tank fi tted. As an example, the stylish BMW i3 as a full electric model has a claimed range of up to 105 miles, whereas the range extender version can achieve up to 185 miles from its 9 litre fuel tank.

Another alternative may be one of the rapidly increasing number of plug-in hybrids. T y p i c a l l y , these have a petrol engine

which can power the car in the normal way, supported

by an electric drive-train to provide periods of electric-only motoring. Crucially, many plug-in hybrids have low enough emissions to be classed alongside full electric cars as Ultra

Low Emission Vehicles by the Government, thus sharing many of the cost benefi ts such as freedom from Congestion Charging.

Whilst the range of a plug-in hybrid in electric mode may be even more limited than that of most fully-electric cars, that limited range is still useful for local journeys, when a conventional petrol or diesel car is at its most ineffi cient. In terms of sales, the leading plug-in hybrid model is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a particularly useful vehicle if you need 4x4 capability. Mitsubishi claim the electric-only r a n g e for the Outlander is

up to 32

26 vantagepointmag.co.uk

miles, however we achieved only around 20 miles on electric power, a range which experience suggests is typical of any plug-in hybrid. In a sign that the motor industry views plug-in hybrids as the way to go, just about every manufacturer now offers at least one plug-in hybrid model in their range. BMW for example offer plug-in models in their 2-Series, 3-Series and X5 ranges, with more to come.

Increasingly, the more sporting plug-in hybrid models are being optimised to combine enhanced performance with good fuel economy, by using their petrol and electric power units either separately, for economy and low emissions, or together for extra performance when necessary. One of our favourites is the Golf GTE, which is virtually indistinguishable from and nearly as quick as its sporty stable-mate, the Golf GTI, when both petrol and electric power units are operating simultaneously, but able to be much more economical at other times. The GTE we sampled also averaged 20 miles of electric-only running, switching seamlessly over to petrol when the battery supply was exhausted, achieving around 45mpg overall.

The performance enhancing attributes of hybrid drives are put to good use in the latest crop of exotic McLaren, Porsche and Ferrrari

supercars, however a rather more affordable alternative to them is the stunning BMW i8 sports car, branded as the world’s first sports car with the consumption and emissions values of a family saloon. The i8 can achieve 35mpg on long-distance trips, coupled with a 4.4 second 0-62 mph time – pretty impressive!

With any range-extender or plug-in hybrid, range anxiety simply ceases to become an issue. And, yet, by taking advantage of the rapid charging stations which are increasingly appearing around the country, you can grab a quick recharge whenever you pause a journey for a coffee- or comfort-break, returning to your car to enjoy a bonus of another 20 or so miles of free - or low-cost - electric motoring.

Is the situation likely to change in the future? Almost certainly electric car range will extend as battery technology improves. Several manufacturers talk confidently of achieving a 300 mile range from mid-priced full electric cars, however this is likely to take up to10 years to achieve. For today, however, plug-in hybrid sales are growing at a significant rate, as they are for most of us the most effective compromise in providing practical green motoring.

This was the end of the GUTS Motor Tour 2015, which had seen these fabulous cars travel more than 50 miles through some exceptional countryside via Cowdray Park, Midhurst and fi nishing at the Weald & Downland Museum near Goodwood.

First started in 2002, the GUTS Motor Tour has raised in excess of £55,000 for GUTS, whose goal is to improve bowel cancer survival rates through more eff ective screening, detection and treatment, and by raising awareness of the disease. GUTS funds a Family Colorectal Cancer Clinic (FCCC) based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital which off ers advice and screening to people at a high risk of developing bowel cancer.

They have also funded equipment and facilities to help improve the care and treatment of bowel cancer patients at the RSCH. The charity also funds research into new ways of detecting bowel cancer and into better ways of treating the disease.

The 2015 tour raised an excellent £3,800 on the day for GUTS. Thanks go to Penningtons Manches Solicitors for sponsoring the rally plates and to the following companies who off ered raffl e prizes: Swain & Jones Farnham; Forest Mere Spa, Liphook; Hunters, Guildford; Forest Foragers; Beau-Port Kitchens, Alton; Cowdray Farm Shop, Midhurst; G-Live, Guildford; Piazza Firenze, Godalming; Stag on the River, Eashing nr Godalming; and Grayshott Pottery. Thanks also to Cowdray Park and the Weald & Downland Museum for hosting the cars and drivers along the way, and to Godalming Butchers for providing the breakfast!

The GUTS Motor Tour really is a fabulous day out for drivers and passengers and a wonderful spectacle for all vintage and classic car enthusiasts. The majority of the cars are either veteran, vintage or classic and they usually end up with a fabulous variety of makes and models joyfully rubbing hubcaps. If you haven’t got a suitable motor to drive, you are always welcome to come along to their fi nal destination and enjoy the cars when they arrive.

The 2016 Tour will take place on Sunday 4th September and will include a mid-morning pit stop at Stansted Park, near Rowlands Castle in Hampshire before it arrives for a late lunch at Hinton Ampner, near Alresford, Hampshire where entrants will be allowed full access to the house and its magnifi cent grounds, courtesy of the National Trust. Beritaz Care already owns and runs three popular nursing and residential homes in Surrey: Robertson Nursing Home in Godalming, Ashton Manor Nursing Home in Farnham and Springkell House in Hindhead, all providing home from home quality care with warmth and understanding in a secure and happy environment. Beritaz has a well-earned reputation for providing excellent quality of care.

The dynamic group was keen to use their extensive experience to provide quality residential and nursing care in other areas.

In February 2016, the purchase of Avonwood Manor Nursing Home in Poole brought the number of homes run by Beritaz to six. Avonwood Manor is set in a leafy residential road close to the picturesque Dorset countryside and the beautiful town of Poole.

Close by in Bournemouth, Beritaz manages Windsor Court Care Home in Bodorgan Road, whilst in New Milton, Chestnut Court Rest Home is set in landscaped grounds, close to both the seaside and the beautiful New Forest. Chestnut Court was inspected under the new Care Quality Commission scheme in August 2015 and was rated by them as Good.

You can visit any of their homes without an appointment – go and see what makes them different for yourself.

Beritaz Care expands, adding to its portfolio of residential and nursing homes

This summer, the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire hosts a new exhibition – the only one in the south east of England – that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter.

Set in the sunny gallery space at the top of this country mansion, Beatrix Potter: Play and Childhood features a delightful collection of 30 original watercolours and drawings by perhaps the world’s most beloved children’s illustrator and author, alongside a small selection of vintage Beatrix Potter dolls and figurines.

The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see these artworks, which, due to light sensitivity, are rarely shown outside of their permanent home in the Lake District.

The collection showcases some of Beatrix Potter’s most famous characters, whilst taking you on a journey into the world of play and childhood, from Peter Rabbit’s naughty antics to the Two Bad Mice as they wreak havoc in a doll’s house.

When Beatrix Potter was born in 1866, children from respectable families were expected to be seen and not heard, whilst children’s books were filled with sentimental moral tales designed to shape them into responsible members of society.

Despite her conventional upbringing, Beatrix’s sense of fun and her fascination with the natural world – developed on family holidays and inspired by the behaviour of her own pets – ensured that when she began writing for children, the tone was very different. She also added humour to her tales, and a touch of darkness to the age old formula where the good triumph over the greedy, wicked, or just plain feckless.

Beatrix’s unique combination of storytelling skill and a naturalist’s eye for detail have provided a lasting appeal, inviting us to revel in the chaos that ensues when rules are broken. Impertinent squirrels sing riddles to wise old owls, curious kittens ruin their clothes cavorting in the garden, and rabbits and piglets range far and wide on gloriously hazardous adventures.

Many of the illustrations on show at Mottisfont are based on landscapes and experiences familiar to Beatrix. For instance, Lucie, the little girl in a white pinafore chatting to hedgehog washerwoman Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, was based on one of the daughters of the local vicar.

The anarchic behaviour of Hunca Munca and Tom Thumb as they vandalise a doll’s house in The Tale of Two Bad Mice was inspired by two mice Beatrix rescued from a trap and kept as pets. This story was written against the backdrop of her blossoming love affair with her publisher, Norman Warne, who made the doll’s house for his niece, Winifred, and sent Beatrix dolls and miniature food to draw. She wrote to Norman: “I received the parcel from Hamleys this morning; the things will all do beautifully. The ham’s appearance is enough to cause indigestion.”

In the illustration ‘Then over the hills and far away she danced with Pigling Bland’, Pigling and peppermint-loving Pig-wig are seen kicking up their trotters as they dance into the sunset. To perfect her porcine characters, Beatrix sketched the pigs she kept at Hill Top Farm in Cumbria. She wrote to a friend: “I have spent a very wet hour inside the pig-sty drawing the pig. It tries to nibble my boots, which is interrupting.”

Accompanying the show is an extensive Beatrix Potter family trail, inspired by her playful characters and colourful stories. The route takes children on an adventure around the grounds, with activities to complete and puzzles to solve.

On set weekends over the summer holidays, families can enjoy a host of additional Beatrix Potter-themed fun, including storytelling and drop-in sessions with artists. These will run on 30th and 31st July, 13th, 14th, 27th and 28th August.

“I have just made stories to please myself, because I never grew up”

From a letter by Beatrix, aged 55, to a friend.

The Gold standard

Garden designer Andy Sturgeon was awarded a Gold Medal and the coveted award of Best in Show, for the fabulous Show Garden he designed for The Telegraph at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I caught up with Andy Sturgeon at Chelsea Flower Show, to fi nd out more about The Telegraph Garden.

Beth: Do you have a favourite area of your garden?

Andy Sturgeon: Well, I’ve got one – the fi re pit bowl area is a favourite place to be, but my favourite view is from the front of the garden, looking right the way down to the far corner.

B: And are you pleased with how The Telegraph Garden has turned out?

AS: Yeah, there’s nothing that I’d want to be better – and I don’t think I can often say that.

B: Did you have any issues with the bronze fi ns in your garden?

AS: No… well we did actually, one of the fi ns, because of the budget some of the fi ns are powder-coated with a much cheaper spray on the back; I mean, it’s really good – and you can hardly tell, but some of them are only patinated on the front. We went to great lengths when we had them fabricated, we did an awful lot of drawings for this garden, and on the leg of each one it was welded on which is the front, and they did it the wrong way around. They were all wrapped up, you see, and we installed them all, they were all protected, and because we’d gone to such great lengths to make sure they didn’t get it wrong we trusted it, and when the time came, we took it all off – it was the fi rst one we uncovered, and everyone went “ah, that looks really good” and I said “no it doesn’t, it’s the wrong colour”. We had to send it to Ipswich and get it re-done.

B: The colours of the fi ns are so good now.

B: Do you have any planting combinations that you particularly enjoy in this garden?

AS: Well, yes, there’s a thing called Catananche caerulea ‘Tizi n Test’, and it’s a sort of pale violety fl oaty thing, quite low.

AS: If you look here, you can see this is the Catananche here hanging over, you can see the open fl owers and the closed fl owers, and with the salvia there, and then you’ve got this low-grown plant, and then beyond the little Centaurea, slightly more pinky, so that combination, I’ve drifted it across there – that’s my favourite bit, because it was unexpected.

B: You’ve used a lot of stone and diff erent materials in your garden.

AS: Okay. People have asked about this, because we covered it up. See the wall over the back over there. Those stones are 100mm thick, and they’re much, much taller than you can see, because there’s a lot underground. They were very diffi cult to put in, and they went in quite late, because of the way we had to do everything; we came in in the morning, and half of it had fallen over, and fl attened the plants. So that was a challenge.

B: Had people asked you if they’d fallen over?

AS: Somehow word got out, but I’ve denied it to everyone, apart from you.

B: It looks so good though. I’m so pleased for you!

AS: Thank you very much.

B: What’s your favourite garden apart from yours?

AS: Cleve West’ garden for M&G is my favourite.

Abbeyfield Open Day Saturday 23rd July 3pm-5pm Are you elderly and feeling lonely or isolated, no longer wanting to cook or shop and worried about the cost of repairing and heating your home. Abbeyfield’s two sheltered houses in Guildford provide an affordable half-way house between coping alone and going into Care, in a mixture of ensuite studio rooms and two-room flatlets. These houses of between eight and ten residents allow for independent living in a caring, ‘family’ environment with freedom from the concerns of living alone. Residents have unfurnished accommodation, which means they can bring their own pictures, furniture and treasured possessions; and having keys to the front door and their rooms, are free to come and go as they please. Lunch and supper are provided daily by the resident housekeeper in the dining room and charges are generally below those in the commercial sector, due to its charitable status. The open day will give you a chance to tour the house at 1 Castle Hill, Guildford and see the accommodation and facilities. RECIPESSensational salads

Heritage beetroot salad with pomegranate molasses

It’s almost summer which means it is time for salads. There are masses of fabulous ingredients out there which will help you to create some terrifi c combinations. Use them as lighter starters or side dishes or go large and make them your main meal. The fi rst three salads come courtesy of Shirlee Posner (eatsurrey.co.uk) and Secretts Farmshop in Milford.

Method:1. Get a couple of bowls or plates ready to assemble the salads.

Chicken, Mango, Avocado and Sweet Chilli Salad

Ingredients

2 handfuls Secretts mixed salad leaves, washed and spun to remove water; Juice of 1 lime; 2tsp of extra virgin olive oil ; salt and freshly ground pepper; 1 large roasted chicken breast, skinned and cut into chunks; 1 mango, peeled and sliced; 1avocado, peeled and sliced; 2 tbsp of Thai sweet chilli sauce.

Makes 2

Method:1. Place the vegetables together in a mixing bowl (apart from the fl owers).

Ingredients

5 medium cooked roasted beetroot, peeled and roughly chopped (use golden and red here if you like); 50g cooked broad beans; 150g cooked tender-stem broccoli, chopped; 2-3 fresh nasturtium or other edible fl owers (optional).

Dressing

1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses; 1 tablespoon fresh chopped chives (or other fresh herbs such as mint); 1 dessertspoon extra virgin olive oil; 1 dessertspoon red wine vinegar; 1 clove of smoked garlic, crushed; grated zest of 1 small un-waxed lemon; salt and freshly ground black pepper

Serves 4

Eliza’s Tea Room kindly shared their delicious salad recipe with us. This mixture started life as a sandwich from British Sandwich Week and was so popular it was re-invented as a salad. So much so it is now going to be a regular on the specials menu during the summer. It’s easy to make, providing you have all the ingredients to hand.

This is the perfect salad to make with young tender summer vegetables. Secretts baby beetroots inspired me to write this recipe and it tastes as good as it looks. The vegetables to complement the beetroot used in this salad can be swapped and substituted depending on availability and I would make this with corn, fi ne green beans or baby runners too. I served this with a dollop of fat free Greek Yogurt sprinkled with sumac and a drizzle of oil. This would also work well with goat’s cheese, a selection of charcuterie or as part of a cold buffet.

2. Spoon the dressing ingredients straight on the salad and mix well. 3. Place on a serving dish and decorate with fl owers if you have them.

Secretts sells one of the best pomegranate molasses on the market from Lebanese food importer Mymoune. Dearer than those in supermarkets for sure, but taste is so superior its totally worth it! Since you only use it in small amounts anyway in my book, a good investment.

Other ideas...Potato SaladsA good potato salad is often a thing of beauty. Here are a couple of suggestions, both of which can be served warm or cold:

1. Steam or boil Maris Piper (or similar) potatoes with their skins. When tender, drain and leave to cool. Meanwhile, fi nely shop shallots or onions and add to a salad dish. Add some good Dijon mustard vinaigrette and mayonnaise. Peel the potatoes and slice them medium thick. Add to the salad dish and mix well with the onions and dressing. Add chopped chives and parsley, season to taste and serve.

2. Steam or boil new potatoes in their skins until tender. Drain and leave to cool. Make a vinaigrette with wholegrain mustard, cider vinegar and olive oil. Slice some large, sweet gherkins and good quality frankfurters. Slice the potatoes in two and mix them with the vinaigrette, gherkins and frankfurters. Season to taste and serve.

Noodle saladThis is a very quick side salad with a diff erence.

Cook some egg noodles and drain. Make a dressing with soy sauce and olive oil. Quickly toast sesame seeds and fi nely slice a few spring onions. Mix everything together, season to taste and serve.

Method:1. Pre-heat the oven to Gas 5 / 190C/ fan 170C2. Place the butternut squash in a mixing bowl with the sunfl ower oil, seasoning and crushed garlic. Mix well so the squash is evenly coated and pour into a roasting tray. Place the tray in the pre-heated oven for 10 minutes. 3. Remove the squash from the oven and place the salmon in the tray and roast together for a further 15-20 minutes. Once cooked remove, set aside and cool. 4. While you are allowing the roasted fi sh and salad to cool mix the dressing ingredients together and set aside. 5. Now wash the salad leaves and spin. Divide the leaves between 2 salad bowls and drizzle with a little salad dressing. 6. Top the leaves with the roasted squash, cooked prawns, asparagus and fl ake the salmon using it to top the salad. 7. Scatter with asparagus, tomatoes and coconut then pour over the remaining dressing. Serve immediately.

Here turn right and walk across the field and down to cross a stile into another field. Stay on its right-hand side until exiting, to the right, over a stile and onto a road. The path exits in the far left-hand bottom corner through trees onto a road.

The walk

This is a very charming walk, with some majestic views and lovely houses guaranteed to give you house envy! The walk takes you through woods and fields with hardly any ups or downs. PROFILE

And thanks to the generosity of The Holistic Centre, in Wiggins Yard off Bridge Street in Godalming, current and recent patients are now able to go to Godalming on Friday mornings for a range of therapies including massage, reiki and refl exology.

Further down the line, we have been off ered the opportunity to run a Mindfulness Course in Café Mila, also in Godalming, for current and recent cancer patients. Mindfulness essentially is awareness; it is about noticing our thoughts, our feelings, our bodily sensations and anything that is around us and happening right now. It is the opposite of habitual, automatic living, and it teaches us to live more consciously, with gratitude and ‘kindfulness’.

Professor Mark Williams, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford, explains: “Most of us have issues that we fi nd hard to let go and mindfulness can help us deal with them more productively. We can ask: ‘Is trying to solve this by brooding about it helpful, or am I just getting caught up in my thoughts?’ Awareness of this kind also helps us notice signs of stress or anxiety earlier and helps us deal with them better”.

The potential value to cancer patients is very exciting.

So that’s what’s new. What doesn’t change is our ethos and independent status. The Fountain Centre is run by a small team of staff and has over 100 volunteers. The majority are qualifi ed therapists and counsellors, and between them they have about 2,000 appointments a month. We have a wig bank, a lending library, and can provide information about local support groups, welfare benefi ts and specialist cancer charities. Some people simply like to come and sit somewhere comfortable, that doesn’t feel like ‘hospital’, between tests and treatments.

The Fountain Centre is not part of the NHS. It has to raise all the money it needs to keep going by its own eff orts. It costs about £220,000 per year to run, which is tiny compared to other well-known local causes. But we keep going, and growing, entirely through the love and generosity of the community we support.

The Fountain Centre

For 20 years now, the Fountain Centre, Surrey’s local, independent, cancer charity, has been providing support, counselling and complementary therapies to cancer patients and their families from all over Surrey and the surrounding areas. It is based next to St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, and the heart and soul of all its work is there.

But times are changing. The latest developments involve taking the essence of the Fountain Centre completely away from the hospital environment. Some people fi nd it very hard to visit us in the Royal Surrey, even for the most relaxing therapeutic sessions. The memories of surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy can sometimes be too off -putting and painful.

So you may fi nd a Fountain Centre service is now available in your local church hall, or a well-being centre or a gym near you. We are looking to develop new opportunities all over Surrey, but at present the Godalming area is giving us the biggest welcome. Of course, you don’t have to be a Godalming resident to book sessions, they are open to anyone who can get there, from surrounding villages and even Guildford itself. Parking may be easier, for one thing!

Classes for the Pink Ribbon Programme, a six week course of Pilates specially designed for patients recovering from breast cancer surgery have been running in Elstead and Godalming for several months.

For more information, and to book appointments, call 01483 406618 or look at our website – www.fountaincentre.org.
