SCOUTING THE COUGARS: Twostarters and seven lettermen returnfrom last year’s team, which ad-vanced to the NCAA Tournamentand finished at 23-10 overall. Seniorguard Mallary Gillespie-Carling ledthe Cougars in scoring a year ago,averaging 13.6 points per gamewhile shooting almost 86 percent

from the free throw line. Gillespie-Carling paced BYU with 10 points inits final exhibition game this year, a53-41 win over Eastern Oregon, thenscored a team-high 17 points inBYU’s season opening 61-50 winover UC Santa Barbara. LaurenRiley-Varley, a 6-3 senior center, ledBrigham Young on the boardsagainst UCSB, pulling down 11 re-bounds to go along with 14 points.Freshman guard Jazmine Foremandished out a team-high five assists.The Cougars shot an even 50 per-cent from the floor (23-46) in theirseason opener, hit 45.5 percent (5-11) of their three pointers, and 71.4percent (10-14) from the free throwline. BYU turned the ball over 28times against UCSB.

HOME SWEET HOME: The LadyIndians have won over 70 percent(75-31) of their games at the ASUConvocation Center under HeadCoach Brian Boyer. Over the lastfour years, the Tribe has lost just eighttimes on its home court, posting awinning percentage of .854 duringthat time (47-8).

JAZZIN’ IT UP: Sophomore pointguard Jazmine Taylor topped hercareer highs in points scored, assists,and field goals made in the Nov. 9season opener at South DakotaState. Taylor scored eight points,sinking three field goals on the nightwhile also handing out six assists.

LAST TIME OUT: BROOKINGS, S.D.(11-9-2007) — The South DakotaState Lady Jackrabbits survived asecond half Arkansas State rally andwent on to defeat the Lady Indians77-67 in the season opener for bothteams Friday night at Frost Arena inBrookings, S.D.

Arkansas State trimmed a 14-point second half lead to two pointswhen junior guard Caroline Starrsank a pair of free throws to make it62-60 with seven minutes remaining,but South Dakota State outscoredASU 15-7 down the stretch to securethe win.

“I think both teams were kind ofin a feeling-out process tonight,”said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer.“The difference was that when it gottight late, they made all the rightplays and we did not. I think therewere a lot of positives, but the thingwe’ve got to resolve are those littleexecution things, especially whenthe game is on the line.”

Arkansas State took an early 6-5lead on a pair of 3-pointers fromStarr, but the Jacks responded witha 10-0 run to go up 15-6. Sopho-more Ebonie Jefferson stopped therun with a bucket in the paint, butSouth Dakota State added seven

straight to make it 22-8 with justunder 12 minutes remaining in thehalf.

The Lady Indians cut the leadback to single digits at 25-16 on aninside bucket from freshman RachelBaker with 8:35 remaining in the half,and pulled as close as three pointswhen freshman Angie Criner hitback-to-back baskets to trim theJackrabbit lead to 32-29 with 3:50left before halftime. South DakotaState outscored the Tribe 9-4 downthe stretch to take a 41-33 lead atthe break.

The Jackrabbits extended theirlead back to 14 at 56-42 in the firstsix minutes of the second half, but a3-pointer from Baker set an 8-0 run inmotion for the Lady Indians thatpulled ASU within six at 56-50 with justover 10 minutes remaining.

A 25-footer with the shot clockrunning down from SDSU’s KristenRotert stopped the Arkansas Staterun, but the Lady Indians answeredagain, this time with six straight tocut the Jackrabbit lead to 59-56with eight minutes to play.

Two free throws from Starr at the7-minute mark cut the South DakotaState lead to a basket at 62-60, butSouth Dakota State drained six con-secutive free throws over the next 90seconds, and outscored ASU 15-7 inthe remainder of the game to sealthe victory.

ASU PICKED FOURTH IN WEST:The Arkansas State Lady Indianshave been picked fourth in the SunBelt Conference West Division pre-season basketball poll, voted on bythe league’s coaches. The Lady In-dians received two first place votesand 58 points overall in the poll,while UALR was the preseason pickto win the division with 76 overallpoints and six first place votes. Den-ver was tabbed second, followedby North Texas in third place.

Louisiana-Lafayette was pickedto finish fifth in the West, followed byLouisiana-Monroe and New Or-leans.

Western Kentucky received ninefirst place votes to finish at the topof the polling in the East, followed byMiddle Tennessee and Florida Inter-national. South Alabama and Troytied for fourth in the poll, and FloridaAtlantic finished sixth.

LOCK TO MISS SEASON: ForwardKelsey Lock, the only senior on theLady Indian roster, will not play thisseason after suffering what provedto be a career-ending knee injurylast year. It was the second major

knee injury in as many years for theRepublic, Mo. native.

Lock averaged 8.7 points for theLady Indians during the 2005-06 sea-son, starting all 23 games in whichshe appeared. Last year, Lock av-eraged 1.7 points in nine appear-ances, including a season-high ninepoints in ASU’s 80-73 victory overOklahoma State.

“As a coaching staff, we totallysupport Kelsey’s decision,” said ASUHead Coach Brian Boyer. “As muchas we would love to have her com-peting this year for us, we’ve alsobeen beside her the last two yearsto see what she has gone through.This decision did not come as a sur-prise to us. Kelsey has done a greatjob of communicating with usthroughout this process, and we feelthat this is the best decision for herfuture.”

“We are going to keep Kelsey in-volved with the program,” addedBoyer. “She is still going to be a valu-able part of this team from a lead-ership and maturity standpoint, butin the end, this is in the best interestfor Kelsey physically.”

denying that head coach BrianBoyer’s 2007-08 Lady Indians willhave a distinctively different lookfrom the past few seasons.

Boyer and assistants Tanya Ray,Rebecca Chilton-Peoples, and Car-rie Redman have assembled a solidrecruiting class to help replace threeof the most prolific players ever towear the scarlet and black of ASU.

Gone are three career 1,000-point point scorers who started all 34games for the Lady Indians a yearago, part of six players lost from lastyear’s team that finished the seasonat 21-13 overall and advanced tothe second round of the Women’sNational Invitation Tournament. TheLady Indians must replace for-ward/center Adrianne Davie, whofinished her career as ASU’s leadingshot blocker and rebounder, notch-ing 132 blocks and 1,147 reboundsin her four years at Arkansas State.Davie also finished as the school’sthird all-time leading scorer with1,978 points, just ahead of guardRudy Sims who finished her career in2007 as the Tribe’s fifth all-timescorer with 1,664 points. Sims alsofinished as ASU’s career assistsleader with 548, and is fourth on theASU career steals list with 229. Simsfinished fifth on the career 3-pointfield goals list with 159, just ahead ofguard Ali Carter, who finished hercareer in 2007 sixth on the 3-pointfield goals list with 149. Carter fin-ished her career with 1,030 points,shot .334 from behind the 3-pointarc, and .793 from the free throwline. Davie, Sims and Carter wereeach named All-Sun Belt Confer-ence, earning the honor a com-bined eight times.

After relying heavily on Davie,Sims, and Carter in recent seasons,this year’s Lady Indian team expectsto be more balanced, more ath-letic, and play with more speed.Seven new players join one return-ing senior, three returning juniors,and four returning sophomores tomake up the 2007-08 Lady Indianroster.

Guard/forward Kelsey Lock (6-0,Republic, Mo.) returns as ASU’s onlysenior, although she will not play

after suffering two major knee in-juries over the past two seasons.After starting 23 games for the LadyIndians in 2005-06, Lock suffered aknee injury and missed the remain-der of the season and the beginningof the 2006-07 while rehabbing theinjury. She played in nine gamesmidway through last season beforere-aggravating the injury and beingsidelined once again.

Forward Ashley Anderson (6-2,Cabot, Ark.), guard Brittney Hiles (5-7, Baton Rouge, La.), and guardCaroline Starr (5-10, Benton, Ark.)make up the Lady Indians’ returningjunior class. Anderson started 26 ofASU’s 34 games last season, aver-aging 2.7 rebounds and 4.2 points.She scored a career high 16 pointsin ASU’s 67-54 victory at MissouriState last year.

Hiles has been a tough de-fender for the Tribe, and played inall 34 of ASU’s games last season,drawing three starts. She averaged2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 2006-07, to go along with 25 steals.

Starr is ASU’s leading returning 3-point shooter, connecting on 41shots from behind the arc in 2006-07.She scored a career-high 23 pointsto help the Lady Indians overcomea 21-point deficit and rally to defeatNCAA Tournament participantLouisiana-Lafayette 77-61 last sea-son. She recorded a 4-for-4 3-pointshooting night in an 80-64 victoryover Louisiana-Monroe, the bestperformance from behind the arc inASU history, and averaged 7.4 pointsand 3.5 rebounds on the year.

with a year of experience undertheir belts. Jefferson, a guard whoplayed in 19 games for the Tribe lastseason, looks to play an expandedrole after averaging 1.1 points and0.6 rebounds per game last season.She scored a personal best six pointsin the season opener at Charlottelast year.

Taylor played in all 34 games atguard as a true freshman a yearago, starting in three. She aver-aged 1.3 points and 1.2 reboundsduring her freshman season, scoringa career-high six points in an 87-55victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Schlup saw significant playingtime at forward last season, loggingtime in all 34 games, while startingseven. She averaged 3.7 points and3.4 rebounds, scoring in double fig-ures in four games.

Smith played in 28 games for theLady Indians last year, and came onstrong as ASU entered post-seasonplay. She scored in double-figures inall three of the Lady Indians’ Sun BeltConference Tournament games,and averaged 3.0 points and 2.1 re-bounds per game on the season.

Junior college transfers CrystalKirk and forward Kayla Pospisil join

five freshmen for their first year withthe Lady Indians. Kirk (6-2, Lonoke,Ark.) transferred to ASU from Carl Al-bert State College in Poteau, Okla.,after averaging 13.7 points and 7.3rebounds.

Pospisil (6-1, Marion, Iowa) trans-ferred to Arkansas State after lead-ing Kirkwood Community College inCedar Rapids, Iowa to the 2007NJCAA Division II National Champi-onship. Pospisil started all 36 gamesfor Kirkwood, averaging sevenpoints and seven rebounds for anEagle team that defeated its oppo-nents by an average of 42.8 pointsper game.

Through eight seasons as head coach atArkansas State University, Brian Boyer’s name has be-come synonymous with success and the women’sbasketball program. Entering his ninth season ashead coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer hasclimbed to second place on the ASU career winchart with a record of 132-109.

Under Boyer’s guidance, the Lady Indianshave reached the Women’s National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past four seasons.He led the Lady Indians to the 2003-04 Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 16 All-SunBelt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Yearfollowing the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.

His 66 career Sun Belt Conference victories heading into the 2007-08 season rank him sixth all-time in careerconference wins. Last season, the Lady Indians finished 21-13, advanced to the second round of the WNIT beforefalling to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin and continued to build on their already-impressive homerecord with a 14-2 mark at the ASU Convocation Center. The Lady Indians posted home victories over NCAATournament participants Oklahoma State and Louisiana- Lafayette, Southeastern Conference member Alabamaand WNIT participants South Dakota State and Murray State. In all, 14 of the Lady Indians’ 34 games during the2006-07 season were against teams that played in the NCAA or WNIT tournaments. The 2006-07 Lady Indians alsoreached the 10-victory milestone quicker than any other team in ASU history, picking up their 10th win of the sea-son Jan. 3, 2007, and their 21-win total equaled the highest in Boyer’s eight seasons.

Under Boyer’s guidance, several individual records fell during the 2006-07 season as well. Seniors AdrianneDavie and Rudy Sims rewrote the Lady Indian record books, with Davie shattering the career blocked shots recordwith 132 and the career rebounding record with 1,147. Sims set a new mark in career assists with 548, and becamethe first ASU player in over a decade to record a triple-double when she scored 14 points, grabbed 11 reboundsand handed out 10 assists in a 65-58 overtime victory at Louisiana-Lafayette.

Davie was named All-Sun Belt Conference for the fourth straight season, while Sims earned the honor for thethird straight year. Senior Ali Carter became the 16thmember of the career 1,000-point club.

During the 2005- 06 season, the Lady Indians posteda 15- 15 overall record against a schedule that includednine NCAA Tournament teams and three that partici-pated in the WNIT. The Tribe advanced to the semifinalsof the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and Davieearned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for thethird straight season. Davie also joined the ASU 1,000-point club, along with Sims and senior Amber Abraham.

In the 2004-05 season, ASU put together a program-best 10-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak, part ofan 11-game win streak that was the fourth longest in LadyIndian history. The Lady Indians finished the season 21-11overall and in second place in the Sun Belt East Division at11-3, giving Boyer his first 20-win season as head coach.The Tribe advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, de-feating SEC powers Mississippi State and Arkansas alongthe way. The second round victory over Arkansas wasplayed in front of a Convocation Center record crowdof 10, 892. The team’s success earned Boyer his secondstraight Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Award.

Boyer joined former Lady Indian coach Jerry Ann Winters as the only two ASU women’s basketball coaches to winback to- back coach of the year honors. Davie, Sims and Carter all earned All-Sun Belt honors following the 2004-05 season, marking the first time in Lady Indian history that three players earned all-conference honors in a singleseason.

The 2003-04 season culminated with the program’s first-ever regular season conference championship and areturn to the WNIT. The Lady Indians finished 19-10 overall and 10-4 in league play, earning a share of the Sun BeltEast division title as they posted one of the top turnarounds in Division I, picking up seven more wins than the pre-vious season.

ASU’s 19 victories that season were the most since the 1997-98 season, sparked in part by the best start in ASUwomen’s basketball history – a seven-game win streak to open the season. The strong start carried over into SunBelt play as the Lady Indians held the top spot in the East division from start to finish. Davie earned honorablemention all-conference honors as a true freshman, and Boyer was rewarded with his first conference Coach ofthe Year Award.

The 2002-03 season capped a pair of rebuilding years and resulted in a strong finish and a trip to the semifi-nals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

In his first season as head coach of the Lady Indians, Boyer led ASU to its first-ever Top 25 national ranking, 18victories and a trip to the WNIT. The Tribe’s 18 victories gave Boyer the most wins by a first-year coach at ASU sinceSara Wooley won 19 games in her first season in 1979. The Lady Indians opened the season by winning 10 of theirfirst 11 games, including road wins over Southern Miss and nationally-ranked Kansas, giving ASU a No. 25 rankingin the Associated Press poll the following week. The Tribe finished the season at 18-12 overall, ending the year withthe program’s second straight invitation to the WNIT.

Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is nowthe head coach at TCU.

A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyerwas an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assis-

tant with the women's program as well.As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was an NCAA Division II Tour-

nament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) andwon two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16in 1990. As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made

two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the FinalFour in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season. The team went 31-3

in 1995 and made it to the Final Eight of the national tournament. It alsowent undefeated through its MIAA schedule at 16-0. In 1994, the team finishedthird in the nation, losing in a national semifinal contest and finishing with a 29-3overall mark.

In his four seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach, Boyer and theLady Indians earned a 75-42 mark. The 1998-99 team went 18-14 with a trip tothe Women's NIT. In the process, ASU earned wins over nationally- ranked Vir-ginia and Kansas. The Lady Indians won 20 games in back-to-back seasonsin the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. The 1997 team opened the season witha victory over nationally-ranked Illinois and had a 12-game winning streakduring the season, the second longest in school history.

The 1998 squad knocked off nationally-ranked Western Kentucky at the Con-vocation Center and came within four points of scoring an upset over nationalpower Louisiana Tech at home as well. In his first season at ASU, the Lady Indianswon 17 games, despite having just seven scholarship players.

Boyer prepped at Scotland County High School in Memphis, Mo. and graduatedfrom there in 1988. He is married to the former Rhonda Lane of Marked Tree. She is agraduate of ASU.
