  • The input modules process the input signals(e.g. from sensors) and transmit these signalsvia the field bus to the controller. The outputmodules are universal electrical outputs andcontrol small current-consuming devices withpositive logic, e.g. further valves, lights etc..Additional I/O modules for more specific appli-cations are also available.

The pneumatic modules are used for thefollowing:

    • common channels for supply and exhaust air• electrical signals from all solenoid valve coils.

Work connections 2 and 4 are supplied foreach valve location on the individual pneumaticmodules.

By means of the common channels on thepneumatic end plate, the valves are suppliedwith compressed air and both the exhaust airand the pilot air from the valves are vented.Further modules for air supply are also avail-able, in order that different work pressures canbe used or in order that either MIDI/MAXIvalves or ISO valves can be fitted on aterminal.

Further information on their use is to be foundin the Pneumatics Manual for the valve termi-nal. Only the electronic modules and the nodeare described here.

  • 2.1 FITTING THE COMPONENTS

WARNINGBefore fitting the components switch off thefollowing:• the compressed air supply• the power supply for the outputs

(pin 2)• the power supply for the electronic

    components (pin 1)

    You thereby avoid:

    • uncontrolled movement of loose tubing

    • undesired movements of the connectedactuators

    • undefined switching states of the electroniccomponents.

CAUTIONThe valve terminal components contain partswhich can be damaged by electrostaticcharges. • Do not therefore touch the contact surfaces

of the plug connectors at the side of themodules.

    • Observe the instructions for dealing withcomponents liable to damage by electro-static charges.

You thereby avoid destroying the valve termi-nal components.

    VIFB5 - 03/05 2. Fitting

    9809c 2-3

  • PLEASE NOTETreat all the modules and the components ofthe valve terminal with the utmost care. Payspecial attention to the following: • Screw connectors must not be twisted or subjected to mechanical stress.• The screws must fit accurately (otherwise

the threads will be damaged).• The specified torques must be observed.• The modules must be aligned correctly

(IP 65).• The contact surfaces must be clean (avoid

leakage and faulty contacts).• The contacts of the type 03 MIDI valve solenoid coils must not be bent (they

are not resistant to alternate bending and will break off if bent backwards).

In the case of modules and componentsordered at a later stage, observe also the fit-ting instructions included with the product.

    Input/output modules

Before the valve terminal can be extended orconverted, it must first be dismantled.

    Dismantling (see also following diagram)

    • Remove completely the screws of therelevant modules. The modules are nowheld together only by the electrical plugconnectors.

    • Pull the modules carefully and withouttipping away from the electrical plug con-nectors.

    • Replace broken or damaged seals.

  • Fitting (see also following diagram)

PLEASE NOTE• Always place the subsequently ordered modules after the last module before the end plate.• Do not fit more than 12 electronic modules.

Please note also the addressing limits of your field bus protocol.

    Fit the modules as follows:

    • Fit a (new) seal on the right-hand contactsurface facing the node.

    • Fit the module as shown below.

  • End plates

A left-hand and a right-hand plate are requiredas mechanical termination of the modularterminal. These end plates fulfil the followingfunctions:

    • They comply with protection class IP 65.

    • They contain connections/contacts for theearth cable.

    • They contain holes for fitting onto walls andonto the hat rail clamping unit.

By means of screw connectors and the readyfitted spring contacts, the right-hand end plateof the ISO terminal is connected conductivelyto the manifold sub-bases. It is thereforesufficiently earthed.

There are various designs of right-hand endplates for the terminals of type 03 (MIDI/MAXI).Each design is already fitted with a earthcable.

CAUTIONEarth the right-hand end plate with the earthcable before fitting the terminal type 03. Youthereby avoid interference due to electromag-netic influences.

WARNINGUse only power units which guarantee reliableisolation of the operating voltages as per IEC742/EN 60742/VDE 0551 with at least 4 kVisolation resistance (protected extra low volt-age, PELV). Switch power packs are permittedif they guarantee reliable isolation in accord-ance with EN 60950/VDE 0805.

Remark:By using PELV power units, protection againstelectric shock (protection against direct andindirect contact) in accordance with EN 60204-1/IEC 204 is guaranteed on Festo valveterminals.Safety transformers with the adjacent designa-tion must be used for supplying PELV net-works. The valve terminals must be earthed inorder to ensure their function (e.g. EMC)

CAUTION The power supply to the outputs/valves (pin 2)must be fused externally with maximum 10 A.The external fuse prevents the valve terminalfrom being destroyed in the event of a shortcircuit.

  • 3.2.2 Type 05: Connecting the operating voltages

EMC)

CAUTIONThe power supply to the outputs/valves (pin 2)must be fused externally with maximum 10 A.The external fuse prevents the valve terminalfrom being destroyed in the event of a shortcircuit.

  • The 24 V operating voltages are connected onthe adapter plate between the node and thevalves. The node and the I/O-modules aresupplied with operating voltage via the adaptercable.

The following components of valve terminaltype 05 are supplied separately with + 24 V DCvia this connection:

    • The operating voltage for the internal electro-nic components and the inputs of the inputmodules (pin 1: DC + 24 V, tolerance ± 25%, external fuse max. 3.15 A recommended).

    • The operating voltage for the valve outputsand the ouputs of the output modules (pin 2:DC + 24 V, tolerance ± 10 %, external fusemax. 10 A slow-blowing required).

PLEASE NOTECheck your EMERGENCY STOP circuitry, tosee which measures are required in order toplace your machine/system in a safe state inthe event of an EMERGENCY STOP (e.g.switching off the power supply to the valvesand output modules, switching off the com-pressed air supply).

    Potential equalization

The valve terminal has two earthing connec-tions for potential equalization:

    • on the operating voltage connection(pin 4 leading socket)

    • on the left-hand end plate (M4 thread)

PLEASE NOTE• Always connect the earth potential to pin 4

of the operating voltage connection.• Connect the earth cable of the left-hand end

plate to the earth potential with low im-pedance (short cable with large diameter).

    • By means of low impedance connections, make sure that the housing of the valve terminal and the earth connection at pin 4have the same potential and that there are no equalizing currents.

You can thereby avoid interference due toelectromagnetic influences.

  • 3.2.3 Connecting the field bus

There are two field bus plugs on the node forconnecting the valve terminal to the field bus.One of these connections is for the incomingcable and the other is for the continuing fieldbus cable. The signal cables of both plugs areconnected with each other internally.

Two methods of connection are thereforepossible.

    • Looping the field bus cable from terminal toterminal. Both field bus plugs are requiredhere.

    • Connecting the field bus cable by means of aT-adapter. Only one field bus plug is requiredhere.

CAUTION Branches (e.g. T-adapters) cause signal re-flections under certain circumstances if highbaud rates are used. This can lead to "tele-gram faults" with brief "failure" of valves.

Recommendation– Observe the maximum permitted distance of

15 cm between the T-adapter and the fieldbus plug in order to avoid signal reflections.

    – Use the ready-made Festo T-adapter FB-TAfor this purpose.

  • Terminating resistor

If the terminal to be connected is at the end ofa field bus line, a terminating resistor must befitted into the socket of the incoming field buscable (120 Ohm, 0.25 Watt). The socket mustbe adapted for this purpose. The free field busplug must be fitted with a protective cap(protection class IP 65).

Proceed as follows (see diagram below):

    1. Crimp the wires of the resistor together withthose of the incoming field bus cable betweenthe cores S+ (pin 1) and S- (pin 3) of the buscable socket.

In order to guarantee reliable contact, we re-commend that the wires of the resistor andthose of the incoming field bus cable becrimped together in common end sleeves.

    2. Fit the bus cable socket onto one of the fieldbus plugs.

    3. Cover the unused field bus plug with a pro-tective cap.

  • 4.1 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CONFIGURATION AND ADDRESSING

    General

Before commissioning or programming, firstcompile a configuration list of all connectedfield bus slaves. On the basis of this list youcan:

    • carry out a comparison between NOMINALand ACTUAL configurations in order toeliminate connection faults.

    • access these specifications during the syn-tax check of a program in order to avoidaddressing errors.

Configuration of the valve terminal requires avery accurate procedure, since different con-figuration specifications are required for eachterminal on account of the modular structure. Please note here the specifications in thesections which follow.

  • Switching on the operating voltages

PLEASE NOTEObserve also the switching-on instructions inthe PLC manual for your controller.

When the controller is switched on, it automat-ically carries out a comparison between theNOMINAL and ACTUAL configurations. It isimportant here that:

    • the specifications on the configuration arecomplete and correct

    • the power supplies to the PLC and to thefield bus slaves are switched on eithersimultaneously or in the following sequence:

Please observe the following when switchingon the voltage supply:

    • Common supply: If there is a commonpower supply for the control system and allthe field bus slaves, the power should beswitched on via a central switch or powerunit.

    • Separate supply: If the control system andthe field bus slaves have separate powersupplies, the power should be switched onin the following sequence:

    1. power supply to all the field bus slaves2. power supply to the control system

  • Calculating the configuration data

Before configuring, calculate the exact numberof available inputs/outputs. A modular valveterminal consists of a different number of I/Os,depending on the type ordered.

PLEASE NOTE• The terminal makes available four status bits

for diagnosis via the field bus. These are automatically assigned within the terminalwhen there are input modules.

    • The status bits occupy four extra input addresses.

The following table shows the I/Os required permodule for the configuration.

  • Address assignment of the valve terminal

General for type 03 and 05

The address assignment of the outputs of amodular valve terminal depends on the equip-ment fitted on the terminal. A distinction mustbe made between the following equipmentfitted:

    • valves and digital I/O modules• valves only• digital I/O modules only

The basic rules described overleaf apply to theaddress assignment of these fitting variants, irrespective of the field bus protocol used.

Following these basic rules there is a detailedexample both for terminal types 03 and 05.

PLEASE NOTEIf two addresses are assigned for one valvelocation, the following applies:• lower-value address ⇒

    pilot solenoid 14• higher-value address ⇒

    pilot solenoid 12

  • Basic rule 1

The address assignment of the valves, of thedigital I/O modules and of the status bits istaken into account with mixed fittings.

    1. Outputs The address assignment of the outputs does not depend on the inputs.

1.1 Address assignment of the valves• Addresses should be assigned

in ascending order without gaps. • Counting must be from left to right .• Single sub-bases always

    occupy 2 addresses.• Double sub-bases always

occupy 4 addresses. • ISO valve locations always

occupy 2 addresses. • Maximum 26 valve solenoid

coils can be addressed.1.2 Rounding up to 4 bits: different cases

    a) If the number of addresses can bedivided evenly by 4, continue withsection 1.3.

    b) If the number of addresses cannot bedivided evenly by 4, the number mustbe rounded up to 4. The rounded 2 bitsin the address range cannot be used.

1.3 Address assignment of output modulesAfter the valves (rounded to 4-bits), the digital outputs are addressed• Addresses should be assigned

in ascending order without gaps.• Counting must be from right to left .• Counting on the individual modules

is from top to bottom.• Digital output modules always

    occupy 4 addresses.

  • PLEASE NOTEThe terminal permits maximum 64 outputs (in-cluding valve coils).Observe the maximum number of outputs thatyour field bus system can address.

    2. InputsThe address assignment of the inputs doesnot depend on the outputs.

2.1 Addressing the input modules• Addresses should be assigned

in ascending order without gaps.• Counting on the node is

from right to left .• Counting on the individual modules

is from top to bottom.• 4-input modules occupy 4 addresses.• 8-input modules occupy 8 addresses.

2.2 Status bitsThe address assignment of the status bits depends on the fitting variants of the inputs and the configuration.

    The following always applies:

    • The status bits are only available when inputmodules are connected to the terminal andwhen at least eight inputs are configured.

    • Addressing: The status bits are transferred tothe four highest-value positions of the confi-gured address area.

PLEASE NOTE The terminal permits up to 64 inputs (60 digitalinputs and 4 status bits). Observe the maxi-mum number of inputs that your field bussystem can address.

    VIFB5 - 03/05 4. Commissioning

  • When the power supply is switched on, the valveterminal recognizes all available pneumatic mo-dules (type 03: 13 modules, type 05: 4, 8 or 12valve locations)) and digital input/output modulesautomatically and assigns the appropriate ad-dresses. If a valve location is not used (blankingplate) or if a digital input/output is not connected, the appropriate address is nevertheless as-signed. The diagram below shows the addressassignment with mixed fitting.

    Remarks on Fig. 4/3

    • If single solenoid valves are fitted ontodouble sub-bases, four addresses will be as-signed for valve solenoid coils. The higheraddress remains unused (see address 3).

    • If unused locations are sealed with blankingplates, the addresses will still be assigned(see addresses 12, 13).

    • Due to the 4-bit orientated addressing of themodular valve terminal, the address of thelast location is always rounded up to the full4 bits (unless all 4 bits are already used). Two addresses cannot therefore be used(see addresses 14, 15).

  • Basic rule 2

If only valves are used, the address assign-ment will be as described in basic rule 1.

PLEASE NOTE• Maximum 26 valve solenoid coils can be

addressed. This number can be configuredand addressed by all usual protocols.

    • Rounding of the last two positions on the valve side is not necessary.

    • Valve terminals without input modules do not require a configuration for the inputs. The status bits are not therefore available.

    Basic rule 3

If only electrical I/Os are used, the addressassignment will be as described in basic rule 1.

PLEASE NOTE• Counting begins immediately to

the left of the node.• Rounding of the last two positions

on the valve side is not necessary.• With all locations fitted, the terminal

has 64 inputs (60 digital inputs and 4 statusbits) or 48 digital outputs. Observe the maximum number of I/Os that your field bussystem can address.

  • Address assignment after extension/conversion

A special feature of the modular valve terminalis its flexibility. If the demands placed on themachine change, the equipment fitted on theterminal can be modified accordingly.

CAUTIONIf the terminal is extended or converted at alater stage, there may be a shifting of theinput/output addresses. This applies in thefollowing cases:

    • If one or more pneumatic modulesare added or removed at a later stage(type 03).

    • If a pneumatic module with single valves is replaced by a new module with double valves or vice versa (type03).

    • If additional input/output modules are inserted between the node and existing input/output modules.

    • If existing 4-input modules are replaced by 8-input modules or vice versa.

If the configuration of the inputs is modified, the addresses of the status bits will always beshifted.

  • 4.2 FESTO

    Configuration

The field bus configurator in the FST softwaresupports the user in creating the NOMINALconfiguration. The menu control and operationof the FST software is described in theappropriate FST manual for your controller.

    Configure your system as follows:

    • Enter the field bus address of the field busslave (valve terminal).

    • Enter the line number (only FPC 405).

    • Select the type of valve terminal from thefield bus type file and enter "terminaltype 03" (for terminal type 03 and type 05).

    • Enter the calculated inputs/outputs byte-by-byte under IW and OW. The number ofIW/OW need not be identical.

PLEASE NOTEThe input mask of the field bus configuratorshows IW and OW on the screen. These areinput and output words, i.e. 16 bits each. Ifyou select an 03 terminal from the type file, the software will interpret all I/O entries asbytes, i.e. 8 bits each. In this way optimumbyte-by-byte configuration of the modular ter-minal is possible.Example: 48 inputs → 6 IW (48 bits) 20 outputs → 3 OW (24 bits)

  • 4.3 ABB

    General

A valve terminal can be fitted with a differentnumber of inputs/outputs. This determines thenumber of bits. See also the chapter "Basicprinciples of configuration and addressing".

The addressing of the valve terminal is basedin each case on that determined on the CS31system bus. 16 bits on the valve terminaltherefore require a CS31 bus address. Anon-completed group of 16 bits also requires afull CS31bus address.

The following applies when the CS31 systembus is connected to an ABB Procontic T200:

    • The address designations of the inputs andoutputs are different from those on a CS31CPU.

    • The appropriate module identifications mustbe entered in the configuration table of theT200.

PLEASE NOTEIf possible, select the range n = 0...58 for theaddress to be set in the field bus node. Thenn+3 ≤ 61 can also be addressed.

    VIFB5 - 03/05 4. Commissioning

    9809c 4-21

  • If there are inputs on the valve terminal, anadditional 4 status bits will be assigned fordiagnostic messages.

    The status bits always lie at the top of thehighest group of 16.Example: Valve terminal with 60 + 4 inputs on the CS31system bus, address set 20, CS31 CPU:status bits E 23,12; E 23,13; E 23,14 and E 23,15.

    The valve terminal limits are:

    • max. 60 inputs and max. 64 outputs;• max. 26 valve locations

(these occupy, when rounded up to groupsof 4, 28 output signals)

    • only valve terminal type 05 (ISO):max. 12 valve coils may be switched onsimultaneously.
