YMCA takes center stage in LockportBY JAMES FINK [email protected]

The last time the YMCA opened a facility in Lockport, Calvin Coolidge was president and the Central Terminal in Buffalo was four years away from opening. That was 1925.

In early October, the YMCA Buffalo Niagara welcomed the first member to the $16 million, 52,000-square-foot Lockport facility.

“We are a different Y than those days,” said Buddy Campbell, YMCA Buffalo Niagara president and CEO.

Features include two swimming pools, co-ed saunas and steam rooms, 25-foot tall climbing wall, three-lane indoor running/jogging track and a 6,800-square-foot wellness/fitness center.

The 7,400-square-foot gym can be divided into three basketball, three pickleball or two volleyball courts.

“This allows us to serve everybody in the community,” Campbell said. “Part of the problem with the old building is that it wasn’t accessible.”

The old Lockport Y had about 2,000 members. The new facility will make it easier to reach a targeted goal of 11,000 individual members, Campbell said.

By comparison, the YMCA Amherst has more than 20,000 members.

During peak days, the Lockport YMCA may have up to 1,000 people using the facility.

“When you are talking about a place like this, the socialization piece is not something that should be taken for granted,” Campbell said.

The Snyder Drive facility is on 32 acres. There are long-range plans for much of the remaining acreage including a day camp or family activities.

“When the money is available, we will begin to implement the plan. But we will do it in phases,” he said.

When Lockport leaders gathered at the Oath data center (formerly Yahoo) in August, they expected the company to announce annual allocations to local charities.

But in a move that caught town o icials by surprise, Oath announced a plan to invest $32 million in the Niagara County data center.

“This is another example of how they have become good stewards to the community,” said Marc Smith, Town of Lockport economic development coordinator.

Work is expected to begin soon and be complete by next year.

Oath was created last year when Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo and related acompanies including the Hu ington Post and AOL.

Oath will spend $28 million to build a data center in the Town of Lockport Industrial Park and $4 million on equipment upgrades.

Smith said a handful of jobs will be created and 250 employees will be retained in the data center, which opened in 2014.

“Oath has filled up all its existing space and they need more,” he said.

The expansion includes shifting AOL work for other states including California into Lockport, he said.

“They are a great company that has done very well here and helped to create some very well-paying jobs,” Smith said. “It’s a big win for us.”
