Special Pentecost Worship: June 8 Come and celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit on Sunday June 8!
Worship will be at the normal times of 9:00 & 10:30 and worship music
will be provided by both the Praise band and the Chancel Choir. The
liturgical color for the season of Pentecost is red, so we are encouraging
everyone to wear red for our worship celebration.
Great Plains Annual Conference
June 11-14 in Lincoln, NE The calling of the Great Plains Conference is to equip and connect
congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ. The Great Plains
United Methodist Conference envisions a preferred future that will be
interpreted at each local church and is captured in the statement:
Great churches. Great leaders. Great disciples. Transformed world.
Please keep the Gatelys and Valley View’s lay members to Annual
Conference (Martie Uden and Robin Richerson) in prayer as they travel
to Lincoln for the 2014 Session of the Great Plains Annual Conference.
Vision Team Update The Valley View Vision Team is studying the book, “Five Practices of a
Fruitful Congregations” by Robert Schnase, and discussing how it
applies to the practices of our church. This group consists of members
from a variety of backgrounds, ages and genders in order to have many
perspectives on how our church could move forward.
The team members are Bob Moneymaker, Tricia Nelson, Sarah Wille,
Mike Ayres, Lanny Bachtle, Lauren Buster, Jeremy Smith, Kathy
Halstead, Keith Haas, Doris Kreuzberger, Rindy Richerson, Kirk Reid
and Rev. Bridget Gately. Future plans include other small groups
studying this book in the fall.

A Message From The Pastors
There are many titles used for pastors. Sometimes we are called reverend, but we don’t really like this
title because we can be quite irreverent. Sometimes we are called ministers, but we don’t use this one
because we believe that everyone is a minister. Our preferred title is pastor which comes from the Latin
for shepherd. Another title that is used most frequently in rural settings is preacher. Although this is not
our first choice as a title, it is difficult for us to deny that we do indeed preach and thus are preachers.
Preaching and worship leadership take a tremendous portion of our time. Sure there are the jokes saying
that we only work for two hours on Sunday morning, but a meaningful worship service requires exten-
sive preparation. Often the most difficult part of writing a sermon is finding the “illustration.” We can
read what scholars have to say about the text. We can outline the points that we want to communicate.
We can set an overarching theme for the service. The question is what story we will tell to reinforce the
message; because we know that sometimes the story is the only thing that anyone remembers.
Jesus knew the power of stories, and it is why he taught with parables. “A father had two sons…”
“A farmer went to sow seeds…” “A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was beaten,
robbed, stripped, and left for dead…” These stories demonstrate key elements of religious teaching.
The characters help us to remember the truth behind the story.
This summer our sermon illustrations are going to come from Disney films. We are in no way equating
Walt Disney with Jesus Christ or screenplays with the Gospel. What we do recognize is that any good
story speaks to the human condition and that is why it sticks with us. There are many moments in The
Lion King, Toy Story, and Frozen that demonstrate love and compassion in a way that is memorable.
We will not be preaching from the movie. We will instead preach from the Scriptures and use the Disney
stories as exactly that, stories. We pray that this will be a fun way to engage families throughout the
summer and by attaching a faith message to these popular films, people will be inspired to consider
deeper meanings as they view these movies in the future.
Although this is a sermon series, it is not like other series that we have preached. There will not be a
theme that builds from week to week. Instead each sermon is self contained. This will make it easier for
people as they drop in and out this summer due to travels. In essence the only thing that the sermons
have in common is the fact that the illustrations are from Disney’s “modern classics.” We hope to see you
in worship this summer, but keep in mind that the audio from Sunday worship is placed on the Web site
every Monday.
Pastors Neil and Bridget
“The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive,
and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’” -Matthew 13:13

come to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas to
attend United Methodist Youth Institute. Institute is a

ment for high school students (incoming freshman
through graduating seniors). At Institute, youth experi-
ence Christian community and are taught to receive and
give care and support as modeled by Jesus Christ.
Institute is intentional about making disciples for the
transformation of the world.
We have a scholarship fund set up if you would like to
make a donation to help make this week possible for one
of our youth in 2015.

Youth Mission Trip to New Orleans Saturday, July 12—Saturday, July 19
Please pray for Valley View’s twenty youth and four
adult leaders as we load up and head to New Orleans,
Louisiana (NOLA)!
We are really excited about our week of mission outreach
and all the great things that God has in store for us and
the people we will be serving. While in NOLA, we will
stay with and work alongside the TEAMeffort staff and
other youth groups from Ohio and Texas. I hear we have
a lot of great work ahead of us, from minor repairs to a
total remodel needing our attention.
God has blessed TEAMeffort with tons of work and
people to serve and we thank everyone that has helped
make it possible for us to join them in being the hands
and feet of Christ.

Hope Chest
Food Pantry:
Did You Know? The history of Hope Chest
continues. By 2000 the need and
offerings outgrew the armoire
chest and moved into the boiler
room where the food was stored. In 2002, the Hope Chest
moved to the Sunday School Resource room and
finally into the two rooms that were originally Sunday
school classrooms. Hope Chest was so busy that the
Children’s Ministry Director and the 5th and 6th graders
could no longer handle the load. The young mothers from
the Children’s Ministry Council took on the project and
kept it going for a year.
Recently, a lady was at the Hope Chest who was living in
Safe Home housing, because she was in an abusive
situation. She was having to move every two weeks so her
soon-to-be ex-husband could not find her. Her case was
going to court in a few weeks. As she was shopping for
food she started to feel weak. A volunteer asked if she
would like some water and a snack. She said yes and
started to eat the snack bar and ate about half of it and said
that she would save the rest for later. The volunteer got her
some more snack bars. As she was leaving, she told several
of the volunteers that after being at the Hope Chest, she
knew that everything was going to be OK for her.
If you contribute time, food and/or money to support the
Hope Chest, thank you. If you haven’t yet, why not start
now?
