When you buy from an independent, locallyowned business, significantly more of
your money is used to make purchases fromother local businesses, service providersand farms -- continuing to strengthen the
economic base of the community.
Create more good jobsSmall local businesses are the largest
employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.
Get better serviceLocal businesses often hire people witha better understanding of the products
they are selling and take more time to getto know customers.
Invest in communityLocal businesses are owned by people
who live in this community, are less likelyto leave, and are more invested in the
community’s future.
Put your taxes to good useLocal businesses in town centers require
comparatively little infrastructure investmentand make more efficient use of public services.

January 12, 2013Hello Again,
With the New Year already a few days old, I couldn’t help but wonder what will the future bring? Our
president seems to be winning the war about collecting more taxes, especially from you and me, while
hitting the super rich with a big hike. He stated he will not cut back on spending, in fact, wants to
spend more. Now I know he is a pretty clever politician, but how can we get back on our feet by
borrowing money so that we can give away more than we have? Do we have a president or a magician?
I often wonder what it will be like in Heaven — while I believe that it will be wonderful, I have to admit
I’m in no hurry to find out. Besides, my wife promised she is going to bake more apple pies.
I believe J.F. Kennedy was the last president to wear a tall beaver stovepipe hat when he was sworn
in. Is it possible that he was the last, hoping to pull a rabbit out of the tall hat?
This is a tale about a lovely, yet famous, White House bathtub. In a 1917 column, the famous
humorist and writer H.L. Mencken wrote that Millard Fillmore, a native of Moravia, while President of
the United States, had the first bathtub installed in the White House. This was a hoax. However, the
natives of Moravia assumed the bathtub story was true and introduced wheeled bathtub races as
part of Fillmore Days in his birthplace village.
The President Fillmore bathtub blarney was believed by the good residents of Moravia and to this
day wheeled bathtub races are held each year even though years later, Mencken fessed up to his line
of blarney.
Now more than 160 years after Millard Fillmore’s stay in the White House, a new line of White House
bathroom blarney may be given birth.
It would be easy to columnize our president; President Barack Obama, suggesting he almost never
took a bath in the White House. The question properly exaggerated could be, “How could he? He is
almost never in Washington long enough to need one.” I believe he is now in Hawaii.
Who says that blarney is wrong? It made both Millard Fillmore famous and loved. It also added
greatly to H.L. Mencken fame and Moravia, New York, is now in the history books. I believe H.L.
Mencken’s column did not appear until 47 years after the death of President Millard Fillmore. Now I
ask you, is that an example of freedom of the press at its meaningful best? Mencken came up with
real bathtub blarney and the folks of Moravia, rather than taking a bathtub bath, put wheels on it and
go for a bathtub ride.
The old saying, “Experience is the best teacher!” — does this apply to slow learners?
Since the days of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, nearly every president has beat his
predecessor by spending more right up to and including Mr. Obama.
Now here is the catch. The United States of America was quite possibly the most successful
industrialized nation in the world. Our factories manufactured clothing, shoes, machinery, household
appliances, autos, trucks, airplanes — you name it — and sold, not only to our own citizens but to
consumers throughout the world.
Now because it costs so much to manufacture here in this country due to taxes and constantly
growing wages, consumers here in this country and the remainder of the world can no longer afford
American-made anything. We raise wages, then have to charge more over and over again each year.
We have a new policy — expand the number of government employees. We, the free-enterprise
workers, are taxed for, and when those taxes do not cover, borrow money from China.
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • January 12, 2013 Page 7
I realize we — you and me — are just down-to-earth, hard-working, tax-paying, American citizens
and if we swallow the idea of constantly growing our government and raising wages, are we not also
slow learners?
Last year our government officials and financial advisers suggested we should learn to tighten our
belts, which was a good thing, because what’s happening now is enough to scare our pants off.
The best that I can recall, it was during the spring or summer of 1947 or possibly 1946, when I
overheard my mother and father discussing the possibility of leaving Middlefield and moving to
Cooperstown. Cooperstown was about seven miles away on the other side of Murphy Hill. That hill was
the cause of the move discussion.
During the winter of 1947, I believe in January, Dad was driving home during a snow blizzard from
his place of employment at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, and plowed into a huge snow bank near
the top of Murphy Hill. Heavy snow was falling and the wind made visibility nearly impossible. The 1937
Chevy he was driving was hopelessly buried with no chance of being dug out. After trying for over one
half hour to dig the snow away from the car, he knew it was useless.
He started walking through the waist-high drifts down the Cooperstown side of the hill. After a
dreadful near one hour, half-crawling and digging his way through the drifts, he arrived at the Holiday
farm which was part way down the hill. The Holiday’s had grown accustomed to blizzard weather on
Murphy Hill, invited Dad in to their home and gave him a hot dinner and a warm bed to sleep in.
Holiday’s had a telephone and were able to contact Charlie Hearn or Lee Roberts at the Hearn Store
and asked them to contact my mother to say that Dad was safe in their home and would surely make
it back home to Middlefield the next day.
I believe it was Lynn Wilson, the town of Middlefield Road Supervisor, driving their huge Walter’s
snow fighter snow plow, who found Dad’s car. With his wingman, he shoveled the snow away from Dad’s
car and turned it around and drove it back down the hill to Holiday’s. Several times Wilson said they
totally expected to find Dad’s body buried in the snow and hoped the huge Big Walter’s snowplow had
not already covered him. Dad spent nearly a week homebound suffering from hypothermia.
Winter-blizzard stories like this one were common. The weather conditions have changed in my
lifetime. Though we still have some snow and below-freezing temperatures, seldom do we learn of a
snow created disaster except for auto pile-ups.
When I was a boy, our dairy farm neighbors, on a regular basis had to deliver cans of milk down to
the main plowed road in the village to meet the milk truck with a team of large work horses hitched
to a bobsled with runners, not wheels.
The following is proof that weather is not the only thing that changes. A short-haired girl said to
a long-haired boy on their second car date, “Of course Daddy doesn’t mind our being alone together.
He thinks you are a girl.”
According to the Holy Bible, there is something that never changes. Read John 3 verse 16. I quote,
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.”
Turn to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and then John and read all of John 3:16 and
the following verses. I’m sure they will give you something to study.
Remember to speak well of and to wave or say hello to your neighbors. God
placed all of us near each other for a reason.
Happy New Year.

The Newhouse clamp is atool to assist in setting ani-mal traps. It was sold by theNewhouse company, whichwas located in the Oneida,NY area. This clamp helpedtrappers squeeze springs sothey could more easily settraps that were large or toostiff to set with one’s hands.
As explained in one of theNewhouse’s publications:“Every trapper knows howdifficult it is to set a largetrap alone in the woods, especially in cold weather, when the fingers are stiff, and the difficulty is greatlyincreased when one has towork in a boat. One of theseclamps applied to eachspring will, by a few turns ofthe thumbscrews, bend thesprings to their place so thepan may be adjusted without
difficulty.”Once the trap was set, the
clamp could be removed. These clamps came in a vari-
ety of sizes ranging fromsmall ones, as shown here, tovery large ones that wouldset bear traps.

Hello! My name isDanielle Trumbull andI am the founder andhost of PawsitiveBeginnings. I also rep-resent the capitalregion of New York inthe Miss AmericaOrganization as MissEmpire Star. As a rep-resentative of the MissAmerica Organization,I am permitted tochoose a platform thatI am passionatetowards and caredeeply about. My plat-form is “Advocacy andEducation to EndAnimal Abuse andNeglect.”
I will be competing
in the Miss FultonCounty competition aswell in hopes to pro-mote animal rightsand the Miss AmericaOrganization further. My goals with thisplatform are quitespecific. I would like toend the concept of killshelters in Americaentirely, establish ananimal abuser registryin New York andbeyond, and I wouldlike to continue edu-cating our youthabout the importanceof recognizing thesigns of animal abuse, the different types andrespecting themselves
and one another. We are very close to
eliminating kill shel-ters altogether but weneed advocacy andeducation now morethan ever as storms, natural disasters andabuse cases have ren-dered our sheltershelpless. Theybecome overwhelmedwith animals thatthey cannot possiblysupport and so it isvital that we speakout for the animalsthat cannot speak forthemselves.
The main goal ofPawsitive Beginningsis to use social media
to market adoptableanimals in dire needof a forever home.Steve Caporizzo hasbeen a great friend, mentor and inspira-tion to me. His PetConnection segmenton channel 10 news iswhat inspired my ideato create PawsitiveBeginnings! I felt thatwe needed a local ver-sion of Pet Connectionin our area to helpabandoned andhomeless pets.
In a typical episodeof “Pawsitive Begin-nings.” I will introducean animal and informviewers about the ani-mal’s personality, background (includingcases of abuse theyhave been through),how they interact withchildren and other ani-mals, and most impor-tantly, what is requiredto make them the mostcomfortable in a home.
By using socialmedia and ourFacebook page, it ismy hope that weincrease adoptionrates in FultonCounty and beyondand end the conceptof euthanization so itis eventually just abad memory. We havebeen working with theJames A. BrennanMemorial HumaneSociety located onNine Mile Tree Roadin Mayfield, NY, andAyres Shelter inSprakers, NY. Wehave been welcomedwith open arms toboth shelters and theyhave been very sup-portive! You can alsofind us on Facebookby typing in PawsitiveBeginnings” in thesearch bar!
Thank you forhelping us help theanimals!!
Pawsitive Beginnings
Pawsitive Beginnings is a non-profit organization with a mission to help adoptableanimals find their forever homes.

by Larry CoxSpinning wheel
Q: I have my mother’sShaker spinning wheelthat was appraised in1980 for $600. It wasidentified as made in anupstate Shaker commu-nity in New York, proba-bly during the mid-1800s. How can I findsomeone to appraise itagain and, perhaps, finda worthy home for thisfine wheel? — Nancylee,Oxford, CT
A: What a graciousthing to consider doing.Since your spinningwheel likely originatedin New York, contact theNew York State Muse-um. Ask to speak to thecurator and tell him orher about your wheeland ask if they would beinterested in acceptingit and, if so, could theyprovide you with anappraisal for your per-sonal records. Theaddress and phonenumber are 222 Madi-son Ave., Albany, NY12230, and 518-474-5877.
Q: Could you pleasetell me how much agreen lattice top, satin-glass fruit bowl and twocandleholders areworth? — Dixie, Albu-querque, NM
A: Your question ismuch like me trying toput together a jigsawpuzzle with more thanhalf the pieces missing.I recommend you showyour bowl and candle-
holders to dealers inyour area. If that doesn’twork for you, beginresearching glass andglass patterns. In addi-tion to Internet sources, there are dozens ofexcellent books that youshould find helpful.
Q: I have a graduationcertificate from theLocker Method of Mus-cular Movement Busi-ness Writing EasyMethod from 1920. It isbeautiful, and I wouldlove to know moreabout it. — Mary,Kissimmee, FL
A: I could find norecord of the companythat issued your certifi-cate. Most certificatesfrom this period oftensell for less than $25. Adocument involving ahistorical person would,of course, be worthmuch more.
Q: I purchased a StarWars puzzle at a fleamarket for $25. It is the“Aboard the MillenniumFalcon,” has 1,000pieces and is complete.Good deal or bad deal?— Rob, Albuquerque,NM
A: Bad deal. Accord-ing to the “Official PriceGuide to Star WarsMemorabilia” by JeremyBeckett, your puzzle isworth less than $10. Ichecked with two seri-ous collectors, and theyagreed with Beckett’sappraisal.

When your parentsor grandparents gotmarried, there was agood chance that theirclosest relatives andfriends lived nearby —in the neighborhood.Attending the weddingwas easy, and every-one headed homeafterward. This sce-nario is not too com-mon nowadays. Manyfamilies have spreadout across the coun-try, or even the world, making travel a signif-icant component ofmodern weddings. Asa result, couples musttake accommodationsinto considerationwhen planning theirnuptials.
Couples cannotexpect relatives totravel to their wed-ding, party into thewee hours of themorning and then beresponsible for findinga place to stay. It iscommon courtesy forhotel rooms to bemade available to out-of-town guests.Although most cou-ples reserve a block ofrooms for guests, abride and groom reallylooking to go aboveand beyond willchoose to cover thecost of these rooms asa gift.
To ensure there willbe available rooms forguests, it is importantto contact an areahotel (or hotels) well inadvance of your wed-ding. To start, find outif the reception siteyou will be using hasan agreement or rela-tionship with an areahotel. In some cases, nearby businesses will
offer a courtesy dis-count to facilitate foottraffic. A wedding con-sultant should knowabout packages thatmay include discountson lodging.
If there is no pack-age deal, start cold-calling hotels.
If you have a dis-count program or fre-quency rewards cardwith a particular hotelchain, start with themfirst.
Most hotels requirea minium of 10 roomsbe reserved to securea “block.” There’s agood chance thegreater the number ofrooms reserved, themore competitive thenightly rate will be.Find out about cancel-lation policies or whenguests need to make areservation in order tosecure the discountedrate.
You can includeinformation abouthotel reservationsright in your weddinginvitation, including acode or number tomention to get thewedding discount. Ifyou’re tech-savvy, youmay have a link to thehotel’s booking Website or information onyour wedding Webpage. Either way, besure there is ampletime for guests tomake a decision con-cerning their hotelreservations.
It may pay to haveyour wedding on aSunday so guests areentitled to the freebreakfast many hotelsoffer to business cus-tomers during theweek.

TAXTIME
1862 - President Lincoln signed into law
a revenue-raising measure to help pay for
Civil War expenses.
The measure created a Commissioner of
Internal Revenue and the nation’s first
income tax.
It levied a 3 percent tax on incomes
between $600 and $10,000 and a 5 per-
cent tax on incomes of more than $10,000.
W A S H I N G T O N ,D.C. — Following theJanuary tax lawchanges made byCongress under theAmerican TaxpayerRelief Act (ATRA), theInternal Revenue Ser-vice announced onJan. 8 it plans toopen the 2013 filingseason and begin pro-cessing individualincome tax returns onJan. 30.
The IRS will beginaccepting tax returnson that date afterupdating forms andcompleting program-ming and testing ofits processing sys-tems. This will reflectthe bulk of the latetax law changesenacted Jan. 2. Thea n n o u n c e m e n tmeans that the vastmajority of tax filers— more than 120 mil-lion households —should be able tostart filing tax returnsstarting Jan 30.
The IRS estimatesthat remaininghouseholds will beable to start filing inlate February or intoMarch because of theneed for more exten-sive form and pro-cessing systemschanges. This groupincludes peopleclaiming residentialenergy credits, depre-ciation of property orgeneral businesscredits. Most of thosein this group file morecomplex tax returnsand typically file clos-er to the April 15deadline or obtain anextension.
“We have workedhard to open tax sea-son as soon as possi-ble,” IRS Acting Com-missioner Steven T.Miller said. “This dateensures we have thetime we need toupdate and test ourprocessing systems.”
The IRS will notprocess paper taxreturns before theanticipated Jan. 30opening date. There isno advantage to filingon paper before theopening date, andtaxpayers will receivetheir tax refundsmuch faster by usinge-file with directdeposit.
“The best option fortaxpayers is to fileelectronically,” Millersaid.
The opening of thefiA38ling season fol-lows passage by Con-gress of an extensiveset of tax changes inATRA on Jan. 1,2013, with manyaffecting tax returnsfor 2012. While theIRS worked to antici-pate the late tax lawchanges as much aspossible, the final lawrequired that the IRSupdate forms andinstructions as wellas make critical pro-cessing systemadjustments before itcan begin acceptingtax returns.
The IRS originallyplanned to open elec-tronic filing this yearon Jan. 22; morethan 80 percent oftaxpayers filed elec-tronically last year.
IRS Plans Jan. 30Tax Season Opening for 1040 Filers

by David UffingtonGood vs. bad debtNot all debt is bad.
In spite of our beingencouraged to clear alldebt so that we don’towe anything to any-one, there are sometypes of debt that aregood and can add pos-itively to our quality oflife.
The two key stepsare to invest only ingood debt, and to keepgood debt from turn-ing into bad debt.
Mortgages are con-sidered good debt, andit’s the biggest debtmost families take on.It’s not likely that any-one can save enoughto buy a house forcash. Mortgages allow
families to buy theirown home to live inand enjoy and to (the-oretically) build upequity. Turn a gooddebt into a better debt— pay it off morequickly by makingextra payments. Even$100 a month extracan shave years offthe end of your mort-gage.
Where mortgagedebt becomes bad is ifyou take on more thanyou can handle. Latepayments lead, at thevery least, toincreased fees andpenalties. Taken tothe extreme, late pay-ments can result inbankruptcy andruined credit.
Other examples ofgood debt (that whichwill appreciate or gainvalue down the road)are education loansfor college (greaterearning power), busi-ness loans (greaterbus iness -bu i ld ingpower) and home-equity loans for need-ed improvements(increase the value ofthe home).
Bad debt is debt youincur for anythingthat won’t gain invalue or that has onlya momentary value, isdisposable or isincurred for thingsyou don’t really need.
Vehicles are consid-ered bad debt becausevehicles never gain invalue. You lose valuethe minute you driveoff the dealer’s lot.
However, vehicles arenecessities. Make thelargest down paymentyou can to keep yourpayments small, andthen pay extra on theloan to pay it offquickly.
Nearly anything youput on a credit cardmakes it a bad debt.Don’t charge things oflow value unlessyou’re going to pay offthe balance at the endof the month. Mealsout, groceries, oilchanges, vacationsand clothing are badbets to chargebecause they’ll nevergain in value and aredisposable.
The rule of thumbis: If it doesn’t gain invalue, try to pay cash.

(NAPSA) — Recently, a number ofextreme storms and hurricanes left thou-sands of cars in the surrounding areasdamaged by floodwaters.
Unfortunately, it’s common for many ofthese flood-damaged cars to end up backon the road every year.
But by doing a little homework, you canavoid buying a car that is rotting from theinside out.
To help, here are some tips: • Check the trunk, glove compartment
and below the seats for signs of water dam-age, such as mud or rust.
• Flex the wires beneath the dashboard. Wet wires will become brittle upon drying
and may crack. • Take a deep breath and smell for musty
odors from mildew.• Ask to see a vehicle history report. To learn more, visit www. carfax.com.

(BPT) — As Old ManWinter makes his ap-pearance, many of usare tempted to bundleup and stay indoors. But don’t let the chang-ing weather keep youfrom nature’s beautyand the potential of out-door adventure.
Keep these tips inmind as the mercuryfalls and keep yourweekend itinerarypacked year round.
Gear up and goSleek windproof
gloves. Comfortable wa-terproof boots. A classicwool cap. Developmentsin modern fabric tech-nology can make virtual-ly any outdoor environ-ment comfortable andenjoyable. Modern syn-thetics keep wind andmoisture out while keep-ing you warm and dryon the inside. And to-day’s advanced woolgarments are comfort-able, washable — andthey don’t itch.Quick adventures for
short daysThe shorter days of
the ‘brr’ months need
not keep you fromlonger treks. Take ad-vantage of modern tech-nology like an all-terrainvehicle (ATV) to get youout and back quicklyand safely. Industrysources report morethan 200,000 new ATVsregistered in 2011 andmillions more in usesince the categorylaunched more thanfour decades ago.
ATVs match up wellwith a variety of outdooractivities — for example, bird watching, thefastest-growing outdooractivity in the UnitedStates. Based on a surveyby the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service; 51.3 mil-lion Americans reportthat they watch birds.Today’s powerful yetcompact and maneuver-able ATVs can easilytransport riders to a bird-er’s paradise full of color-ful species — especiallyappreciated when achingjoints make the elusivemigratory fowl just too farto reach on foot.
Same fun,better exercise
When your body workshard to stay warm, youburn more calories.Physicians warn againstoverdoing it, but keepingup a regular routinethroughout the winter canpay huge dividends whenswimsuit weather comesaround next spring.
Statistics indicate thatwinter hibernation andstagnation can add be-tween five and 10pounds annually to anindividual’s weight. Loga few extra laps aroundyour favorite calorie-burning loop and you’llbe amazed at how muchmore of a workout youget than on a treadmill.
What kicks are yousporting?
Don’t let a little snowor ice stand in the wayof getting outdoors.Think of this as yourchance to walk on water.Embrace the coolermonths with the rightfootwear and equip-ment. When thesnowflakes fall, strap onsome cross-country skisor high-tech aluminumsnowshoes to log the
miles. Public park facili-ties regularly groomtrails for affordable out-door recreation, and inmany cases, special in-troductory programs forequipment make it easyto “try before you buy.”
And if you’d like to geteven deeper into the re-
mote beauty of nature,ATVs can handle the ele-ments, turning a coupleof inches of powder intoa great adventure acrossapproved groomed trails. And when lakes freezeover with more that sixinches of safe ice, ATVsserve anglers with reli-
able transportation toand from their personalice houses or secret hon-ey holes.
With the right equip-ment and the right atti-tude, you can kick-startyour adventures andstoke the passion for theoutdoors in every season.

(NAPSA) — Driversand passengers gener-ally assume theairbags in a car willwork properly. Howev-er, when it comes toused vehicles, thatmay not be the case.
The federal govern-
ment recently an-nounced that up to250,000 counterfeitairbags may have beenused to replace de-ployed units. Thesefaulty airbags may ex-plode or not deploy atall in the event of a col-
lision.To protect yourself
when buying a usedcar, here are a few tips:
• Turn on the igni-tion. The airbag indica-tor light should appearmomentarily and thengo out. If the indicatorlight remains on orflashes, this may indi-cate a problem withthe airbag system.
• Get the Carfax Ve-hicle History Report. The report may includesalvage or junk titles, accident indicatorssuch as frame damageor airbag deployments, and repair details.
• Another way to help
check for faultyairbags is to get a pro-fessional inspection bya mechanic or airbag
specialist. To learn more, visit

The federal government recently announced that up to250,000 counterfeit airbags may have been used to re-place deployed units.
(NAPSA) — Whetheryour company ownsand operates a fleet ofpickup trucks forplowing snow or a sin-gle car to make busi-ness trips, the realityis many businessesuse the same vehiclefor business and per-sonal reasons. But notall business use re-quires a commercialauto insurance policy. So how do you knowwhich you need?Factors to considerSince every business
is unique and each in-surance company usesdifferent standards,it’s a good idea to con-sult a professionalbusiness insuranceagent.
Some of the variablesthat can help you de-
termine if your busi-ness requires a com-mercial auto insurancepolicy include:
• Number of vehiclesowned
• Who’s driving thevehicle(s) — if you needto list other employeesas drivers, you needcommercial insurance
• How often the vehi-cle(s) is (are) used forcommercial purposes— talk to your agentabout what is definedas “business use”
• Type and size of ve-hicle(s)
• Registration — ifthe vehicle(s) is (are)registered in the nameof the business, youneed commercial in-surance.
For example, youown a small dry-clean-
ing business and owntwo vans that your em-ployees use five days aweek to pick up anddrop off your cus-tomers’ orders.
You sometimes usethe van to run errandsor grab lunch, but theyare primarily used forbusiness purposes. The title of both vans isin the name of yourbusiness.
So what do you think— does the dry —cleaning owner needpersonal or commer-cial auto insurance? Ifyou guessed commer-cial auto insurance, you guessed right.
