e Coaches and Athletes are really excited for the 2013 Swim-ming and Diving Season. We have so much to look forward to with so many talented girls returning this fall. Our Team’s depth is go-ing to be a big strength this year.

We have 20 girls who qualied for the Section Meet last season still swimming and many of them are faster coming into this year. We also have a great group of young swimmers and divers who are training really hard and develop-ing into ne athletes which will only enhance our swimming and diving program.

One of our main goals this season is to have a complete sec-tion roster, meaning we would have four swimmers deep in all the individual events and ll all three relays. We would also like to get back to the State Meet with at least two relays and some in-dividuals in their stroke events.

FROM THE COACHOur success this year will de-

pend on how hard the team can train and how healthy the girls can stay during the season. Inju-ries and illness can really aect the outcome of our goals, so we have to be careful.

Our dual meet schedule is always tough. We compete year aer year against some of the best teams in the State. is year we will face four teams that placed

1st, 3rd, 4th and 7th in the 2012 Class A State Meet. We will have dual meets against Mankato West (4th) and Albert Lea (7th), and we will swim against them, plus Northfield (1st) and Visitation (3rd) at the True Team Meet. We will face all four schools again at the Section 1-A Swimming and Diving Meet.

e 2013 Section Meet is go-ing to be some real tough compe-tition with the removal of South St. Paul and the addition of Visita-tion and Bloomington Kennedy. With 12 teams at the meet, it will be a battle to get swimmers into nals. We know it is going to take some really fast swims and our team is up for the challenge.— Mary Lager.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKLast year St. Peter had a 3rd-

place finish in the conference, a great achievement, and a 11th place nish in the section which was a disappointment. But the Saints are always looking for a strong nish in the cross country season, this might be that year.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

There has been a lot of talk about the eventually of the South Central Conference (SCC) merg-ing with other conferences. I feel sad about this because there have been some really great runners and teams from the SCC that have competed in the state meet. So I

am going to share a little statisti-cal fun fact about the SCC. In the last 11 years a boys’ team from our conference has represented its self in the state meet, six of those 11 years two teams have gone from our conference. A point to note: Only two teams advance from any section to the state meet; in the past years there have been 20 or more teams in our section. e strength of the cross country programs in the SCC is based on the competi-tion it has with each other. I hope the Saints will nd a good home in the future with the same competi-tion and quality experiences it has had in the past years in the South Central Conference. — Bill Stuewe.

KEY PLAYERSFreshman Rachel Huber will

be playing No. 1 singles, only re-turning all conference player. Will need to improve all aspects of her game to compete against the top players in the state, and she will do so in the next three seasons.

Junior Val Bresnahan will be playing No. 2 singles/No. 1 dou-bles. Along with Kali Cummins and Mallory Malecek, Bresnahan will provide leadership on and o the court.

Sophomore Katie Sandquist will be playing No. 3 or No. 4 singles/No. 1 doubles. Sandquist, Bresnahan and Huber are St. Pe-ter’s three most versatile players. Sandquist will be a consistent singles and doubles players who will greatly improve as this sea-son goes along in both singles and doubles.

Sophomore Aliza Doherty will be playing No. 3 or No. 4 singles. She is really consistent player who fits perfectly at a lower singles position. She will develop a more oensive game over the course of this season which will help her win more matches than she has already won from last year.

KEEP YOUR EYE ONFreshman Allie Sandquist,

3-1 record at 4 singles/2 doubles; senior Natalie Weelborg and ju-nior Johanna Dietrich, 4-0 at No. 3 doubles this season. Sandquist, Dietrich and Weelborg are the biggest surprise, because of how much they improved from last season to this season and so far they have been very successful this season.

Senior Kali Cummins will give the team opportunities to win at

No. 2 doubles along with seniors Michaela Meyer and Mallory Mal-ecek who will be mixed in No. 2 or No. 3 singles or No. 1 or No. 2 doubles. Meyer and Malecek add depth and experience and won key matches for the team last year. With Cummins playing varsity full time this season, those three seniors will give the Saints oppor-tunities to play well against teams in their section.

State Champion Blue Earth Area. Lost in rst round of section play.

Until a team proves otherwise, defending state champion Blue Earth Area has to be the favorite to win both the conference and the section this season.

“After our first scrimmage (Friday, Aug. 16) I am very hope-ful with how our team will do,” Smith said. “ e girls did a great job of playing every position. I did a lot of switching girls around and had them hit from all di er-

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“We have a stronger serve receive this year by only having three girls back to pass instead of four. This eliminates confusion as to who is going to play the rst ball. We need to work on the con-sistency of our serves along with perfect passes to our setter. Right now most passes seem to be too

KEY PLAYERSe Le Sueur-Henderson Giants’

leading returning receiver from a season ago is switching positions to direct the oense at quarterback. Senior Brady Rose caught ve re-ceptions for 59 yards last season and hopes to get the Giants back to their winning ways.

Junior Jordan Kahlow is the team’s top returning rusher. Kahlow amassed 76 yards on 36 carries in his sophomore season. He also caught three passes for nine yards.

e receiving corps doesn’t bring any gaudy numbers into this year because of a run-rst oense that was played last year. In 2012, the Gi-ants oense ran the ball 332 times compared to 131 passing attempts (54 completions). But leading that group of receivers is junior Riley McGraw at the tight end position, senior Noah Hynes-Marquette, senior Bradley Rose, junior Noah Weiers and junior Tremaine Wadley.

Senior Adam McDonald will be looked at to lead the oensive line.

Returning letter winners include Jordan Kahlow, Bradley Rose, C.J. Pavlo, Brady Rose, Riley McGraw, Sean Kahlow, Noah Weiers, Noah Hynes-Marquette, Brandon Block, Adam Shehata, Adam McDonald and Dan Eckblad.

PLAYERS TO WATCHSenior Connor Boettcher will be

a rst-time starter on the oensive line. Junior running back Noah Wei-ers saw a little action last year and will see a lot of time on the eld this year. Dan Eckblad got time in last year as a running back and is switch-

ing to offensive line. Sophomore Kallan Hudson may be a starter on the offensive line. Junior Clayton Colling will start on both offense and defense without any varsity ex-perience. Returning to the squad is junior Tremaine Wadley who will see time as a receiver, outside line-backer or defensive back.

SEASON OUTLOOKe 2013 Giants football squad

is a young and upcoming team that has many players stepping into new roles for the rst time. ey are go-ing to have to be physical with their opponents in order to compete. e conference is extremely tough this year and each conference game will

be a challenge. The Minnesota River Confer-

ence returns 13 of 17 All-Conference players from last season.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“We lost our two All-Conference performers from last season and will likely go through some bumps in the road early, but we’ll get better as the year goes on. ere are a lot of tal-ented players on this year’s team and time can only tell how they adjust to

their roles. Against our conference, I see Tri-City United as a top contend-er along with Sibley East and Mayer Lutheran. Watertown will also be a tough challenge.” — Head Coach Mike May

KEY RUNNERSBoysEthan Dwyer, a senior cap-

tain, has been a varsity runner since eighth-grade, and coach Jeff Christ says, “he will need to lead the pack.”

Sam Gerdts, a junior who been on varsity since ninth-grade, “needs to run with Dw-yer for points,” Christ said.

Shane Boehne, a junior, ran varsity as a 10th-grader and, “needs to run up with Dwyer and Gerdts,” Christ said.

GirlsJulie Ulrich, a senior and in

her second year of being cap-tain of the team, has been on varsity since ninth grade. Ul-rich has been the top runner for three seasons.

Kim Scheffler, an eighth-grader, ran the second half of 2012 on varsity. “She is young, but has tons of potential and is very driven,” Christ said.

KEEP AN EYE ONBoysConnor Wiederich, a se-

nior, has been running since seventh-grade. Christ noted he put in a solid summer of run-ning.

JP Sosa, a senior, “has a lot of potential if he focuses and gains confidence,” Christ said.

Matthew Bjork, a junior, is a “veteran runner who could make a big impact on team scores,” Christ said.

GirlsChristine Schwartz, a senior,

“has shown great improvement since overcoming an illness last season,” Christ said.

Fellow senior Tristen Payne, is a “very solid runner. She’s quiet, but consistent and always positive,” Christ said.

Emily Eibs, a junior, is “over-coming a hip injury from track,

but should be a solid placer for the Giants,” Christ said.

MOVED ONBoys varsity: Zach Grieves

(two-time All Minnesota River Conference), Nate Eide and Sean Bruns.

Girls: Rikke Rosenbeck and Sarah Bruihller, who is a senior studying abroad.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The boys hope to improve their sixth-place finish last year in the Minnnesota River Valley Conference. They should have a solid pack, but are going to need to push themselves to the front of the race.

The girls won’t have very much depth (only 16 girls came out this season), so they will have to stay healthy to be suc-

cessful. They want to improve upon an eighth-place MRC fin-ish from last year.

“We will be small but com-petitive with ball control, setting, and back row defense being our strengths. Hopefully we will make up for our lack of height with great overall ball control, scrappy defense, aggressive serv-ing, and aggressive team play. We will work extremely hard and hopefully steadily improve throughout the season. We will also work on competing at a high level every night and we’ll see where that will take us,” coach Nixon said.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“It is a very fun and energetic group of girls that have been working extremely hard to bet-ter themselves as players and to become better as a team. We are a fairly young team with a lot of new faces but these girls enjoy competing so even though we don’t have a lot of varsity experi-ence returning, we should still be competitive,” Nixon said.

wide receiver Michael Gramling, wide receiver Hunter Factor, end Charley Simonette, and tackle Alex Burns.

2013 Team OutlookTCU expects to be very com-

petitive in the Minnesota River Conference and in Section 3AAA. If the Titans stay healthy and keep turnovers and penalties down, they have a chance to have a pretty solid team. eir players will play hard.

TCU must cut done the num-ber of turnovers and penalties.

Need to work on a consistent pass rush on defense, and see how the o ensive line comes together.

Comments from the coach“It should be a very balanced

and very competitive conference, any of the top four or ve teams could win the conference.” — Ken Helland

e Tri-City United volleyball team lost a handful of great players due to graduation, but the depth of the team is allowing them to reload instead of rebuild.

KEY PLAYERSThe Angileno Sisters are a

charismatic duo — feeding off each other competitively and lead-ing the team vocally.

Madison Chadderdon is an incredible team leader and a high energy player. The momentum on the court shi s to the positive when she is playing.

Edith Martinez keeps every-one guessing. Mostly a quiet and reserved player, she leads through her actions on/o the court, 110 percent when between the lines.

KEEP YOU EYE ONAmber Brokl will carry the

team. Offensively she is smart and powerful, defensively she is consistent and makes plays out of nothing. Amber will be the go-to girl on the court when TCU needs to get out of a jam.

Setters Alex David (senior) and Samantha Hellerud (junior) will be responsible for calling plays, identifying hitters, and deliver-ing the ball to the many o ensive weapons TCU has. ey are both very dedicated and hard working. Setting requires chemistry with teammates and this is a focus for these girls this pre-season.

Megan Traxler is a peppy and hard-working player looking to make her way onto the varisty court for her senior season. She also takes care of a lot of business

o the court — acting in the form of a team captain — although they have not determined captains yet. Teammates have come to rely on her consistency and dedication to the sport she loves.

Taylor Simon and Alicia Han-son are looking to ll the big (tiny) shoes of Chelsey Walerius (three-time letter winner and All-Con-ference libero). Both are meeting the challenge head on and will nd themselves contributing as defen-sive specialists this fall. Responsi-bilities will include nding open-

ings within the opponent’s defense, communicating with hitters and blockers and delivering the ball to the setters.

MOVED ONChelsey Walerius, Claire Mc-

Crady, Coley Selly, Kristen Jindra and Emily Paulsen.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKTCU has a lot of returning

letter winners and strong senior leadership. They have a host of powerful hitters who will be game changers in close matches.

TCU graduated many of their

top defenders and defensive spe-cialists, but are looking to reload those positions, rather than re-build.

They will put a competitive squad on the court each night. The team is hoping to maintain a top four nish in the Minnesota River Conference and high seed in sub-section play. eir goal is to advance farther each year in the post season.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“Our team this year will look

and feel very different than our team from 2012. We are still grow-ing into ourselves and discovering what exactly we are capable of. I am very con dent that we will put a strong and competitive team on the court and that we will nd our-selves on the winning end more o en than not. We did graduate a lot of talent and leadership, but we are pursuing this season as a “re-load” rather than a “re-build,” said coach Becky Madison.

“I think our competitors will be surprised by what we can bring

to the table.”BY THE NUMBERSFinished with an overall record

of 19-10.Seeded No. 2 in Sub-Section

play, but were defeated by WEM in the semi nals.

Finished 3-4 (4th place overall) in the MRC, defeating Jordan for the rst time in over six years.

e cross country season is start-ing for Tri-City United, and that means there will be strong runners returning and new faces competing.

e boys cross country team has some of its best runners returning this year, and the Titans have had more runners nish the 5k race in less than 22 minutes than last year.

e girls team enters the season with a lot of unknowns this year — only three returning runners.

KEY PLAYERSSenior Marty McGuire went to

state last year and was All Confer-ence. He should be a favorite in the conference and one of the top run-ners in the section.

Sophomore Ben Barnack is run-ning less than 19 minutes in the 5k coming into the season and is a very hard worker.

Senior Mitch Dooley also has a pace of less than 19 minutes in the 5k coming into the season. Dooley is a track star who switched this year from football.

The girls are very young and inexperienced, almost all are in their rst year on the team. ere are three returning runners, Sara Fisher, Morgan Skluzacek, and Katy Rabenberg.

KEEP YOUR EYE ONJared Dooley, Mick McGuire,

omas Franek, Mac Malecha, Jer-emy Walerius and Travis Billmeyer should all do well. Many others may contend for varsity spots.

MOVED ON

Boys:e boys team lost three varsity

runners to graduation last year. Mic Kohnert was the team’s No. 2 runner most of the season. Ben Pichotta ran No. 3 most of the season. Cole Kubes served as captain and ran on varsity all season.

Girls:Some of the top runners last sea-

son — Megan Steen, Taylor Houn, Samantha Ruger — graduated. Jos-lyn Vargo moved back to volleyball.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOKThe boys finished fourth last

year in the conference, and seventh in the 22-team section.

Conference Champs were Mayer Lutheran. Belle Plaine and TCU, along with Jordan, should be the top teams in the conference.

Last year’s state teams were Waseca and Martin County West, and they are favored to repeat. Belle

Plaine and TCU should push for the top ve in the section.

The girls finished fourth last year in the conference and 11th in section.

Conference champs were Belle Plaine. Belle Plaine along with Wa-tertown and Mayer Lutheran should be tops in the conference.

Section teams were Martin County West and Waseca. Belle Plaine should compete for a chance to to make state this year.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“is year we had 10 boys run over 150 miles this summer. I’m re-ally excited about our boys chances of doing something special this year,” Brian Fogal.

BY THE NUMBERS10 — TCU had 10 boys run sub-

KEY PLAYERSBreanna Jaycox, senior 2-year

letterwinner. Honorable Mention All-Conference a year ago. Played entire year at No. 1 singles last year extremely hard worker. Has put in a ton of time over the summer to take her game to the next level.

Courtney Hentges, junior 2-year letter winner. All-Conference ayear ago. Played most of the year at No. 1 doubles. Played a few singles match-es. Easily our most athletic player. Very Quick. Might return at No. 1 doubles or could look to play one of the singles positions.

Kori Lowe, junior 2-year letter winner. Played almost exclusively at No. 2 singles a year ago. Kori is a very strong player who had worked hard outside the season to elevate her game.

KEEP YOUR EYE ONKristi Frederick, sophomore let-

ter winner. Very athletic. Split her time between varsity and JV a year ago.

Jessica O’Meara, junior letter winner. Played No. 4 singles a year ago. Could look to move up a level this year.

Molly Tiede, junior. Only her second year playing tennis but has already made great strides. Looks most comfortable playing doubles.

Chase Arndt, sophomore, played all of last year at No. 2 doubles and looks to possibly move and play at No. 1 doubles this year.

MOVED ONBeth Steinborn, Payton Shook,

Andrea Gro and Breanna Quist.2013 SEASON OUTLOOKLast year, team finished 1-11

overall, 0-6 Minnesota River Con-ference, lost to Maple River 4-3 in the rst round of Section 2A play-os. I look for us to be much im-proved from last year when we won only 1 match, We lost a lot of close matches. How well we do will de-pend on how much improvement some of our younger, less experi-enced players show. Everybody in the conference lost quite a bit of players. Jordan has more depth and hasn’t lost as many players. Blue

Earth Area/Fairmont look like the section favorite. ey were young last year and have a lot returning. St. Peter also always nishes strong. Defending champion Waseca has moved to another section.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

I look for us to be a much im-proved team from a year ago. I think that we have a much stronger line-up from top to bottom than we did a year ago. Hopefully we will see girls push each other from top to bottom throughout the year. — Phil Murry.
