As noted in the minutes of the November meeting, our by-laws state that term limits are limited to two, and this is the second year of my second term. The by-laws must be amended to revise term limits, and this will be discussed at the January board meeting. I am hoping that someone would be willing to step into my shoes, as well as a member stepping up to be Vice-President, as well. The jobs are not terribly stressful, especially since we have a very good Board to stand up with you. If anyone is considering either of these positions, please let Aprell or me know. So I look forward to seeing you at our lodge meeting on December 12, and the Jultrefest on December 17, and then it is on to 2017!!! Cheers, Susan Cody, President

St. Lucia Day

Celebrated across Scandinavia, St. Lucia Day marks the start of the Christmas season and a time to em-brace lighter days to come. The national feast day, part of the Christian Calendar of Saints, is celebrated throughout Norway on December 13.

Though the holiday was first introduced with the spread of Christianity, many of the traditions truly took root when the holiday was readopted during the 20th century in Norway. Reclaiming its derivations from the Latin word for light, St. “Lucia” is honored with parades of light during the darkest time of year.

In schools across Norway, children celebrate with hol-iday programs and processionals. Throughout hospi-tals, school buildings and city centers one can find parades of children clad in white, handing out Lussekatter (Lucia cats), saffron-flavored buns, to those passing by.

As a way to enjoy the start of the holiday season, fam-ilies can celebrate this holiday of hope and light by baking the traditional Lussekatter – a recipe for the buns can be found online at https://food52.com/recipes/8318-saffron-buns-lussekatter. Or, in honor of the Norwegian tradition families can join together in singing the St. Lucia Song (lyrics provided below).

Saint Lucia (English) Black night is falling in stables and homes. The Sun has gone away, the shadows are threatening. Into our dark house enters with lit can-dles, Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia! The night is dark and silent; suddenly a rush in all quiet rooms, like the waving of wings. See, at our threshold stands, dressed in white with lights in her hair, Saint Lucia, Saint Lu-cia!

LOV Notes November 2016 Next Meeting: January 7, 2017 at 9:00am. Denny’s Res-taurant in Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Joyce Oen & Peggy Gere

The first item of new business on the November agenda was to elect our 2017 LOV Officers: President Myla Cole-man, Vice President Millie Wright, Secretary Sandra Yeaman, and Treasurer Amelia Seeto-Murguia. Next on the agenda was to finalize plans for our Annual Lille Butikken November 19th Social. Chairperson Myla Coleman circulated signup sheets for baked goods and oth-er assistance during the evening event. Anne Hoidal reported that the LOV to Read group had so enjoyed reading the first two books in the Moberg series that they decided to read books three and four. They will meet again on January 28, 2017 to share their thoughts about the stories. Everyone agreed that the author made those early days in Minnesota a very vivid experience. Even if you have not read the books, you are welcome to attend the get together at 9:00 AM at the House of Norway in Balboa Park. After breakfast, Ragnhild Amble gave a very interesting presentation of the Norwegian Seters (mountain farms)Traditions. She shared information about hand churned butter and the process of making goat cheeses during the summer season. She passed around several photos includ-ing the farm area of Norway where she was raised. We look forward to seeing many of our Valhall Lodge members (men, woman and friends) at our Annual LOV Christmas Luncheon & Program, Saturday December 10th. This year it is being held at the House of Pacific Relation-Hall of Nations, in Balboa Park. Cupids Catering will be serving us a holiday inspired meal. Dr. Anne-Charlotte Harvey is providing us with another professional directed scene reading from the Hedda Gabler parody. The cast of readers will be the same that read at our 30th Anniversary Luncheon last April: Dr. Michael Harvey, Dr. Peter Larlham, our own Susan Cody and Jean Shogren. See details on page 9 of the November Newsletter and RSVP by December 2nd. Wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Dale Roybal, LOV President

LOV to Read: Helen, Dale, Lettie, Barbara, Joyce O. Front Row: Anne H., Tam, Sandra 10-29-16 at House of Norway, Balboa Park. Discussed Vilhelm Moberg's "Unto A Good Land"

Lille Butikken workers Sandra Yeaman and Amelia Murguia.

Valhall Viking 6 December 2016

CALL TO ORDER: President Susan Cody called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. DRAPED IN HONOR: The Charter was draped in honor of Mari Rem and Don Stewart. Both were long time members who contributed in many ways to Valhall over the years. A moment of silence was held, and our deepest sympathies are ex-tended to both families. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes of the September Meeting were accepted as printed in the October Valhall Viking, No. 8. COMMITTEE and DIRECTOR RE-PORTS: Membership: Aprell reported that one new member has signed up online. Her name is Letty Cotta and she was referred to the lodge by Helen Johnson. Secretary: The lodge received two lovely Thank You cards. Millie Wright expressed thanks for the sympathy card on the pass-ing of her mother, and Anne and Oddvar Hoidal for the lodge’s congratulations on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Social director: (1) Judy reported that she could use some extra committee help for the Lutefisk Dinner. Millie Wright was involved in an auto accident on the way to tonight’s meeting, and she may not be able to help on Saturday. Millie suffered whip-lash but should recover soon. (2) 68 people have signed up so far for Saturday’s social; this number is lower than usual. (3) PayPal is available as an option to pay for the socials. It is still fine to pay in the traditional way with a personal check or cash. (4) The potluck Christmas Social is Dec. 17 and Ellen Spitzer is chairing the com-mittee. House of Norway has been invited to join us this year. Cultural: (1) Sven reported about the October Krettstevne held in Banning. At-tendance was low, around 30 to 35. They had very good food this year, including excellent soup made by Susan Cody. Some people expressed that they think Banning is too far away, it is about a 1 ½ hour drive from San Diego. Sven explored changing the venue to a Camp Pendleton site near San Onofre, but due to certain regulations

and space constraints this was not a good option and it will remain at Banning next year. This is the October social for the lodge, but very few participate. He hopes more will attend next year. Even with low attendance, $1420 was still made for Camp Norge. (2) Sven talked about the Stoughton High School Dancers who are coming to San Diego in March. Plans are still being fi-nalized about locations of their perfor-mances. They will also perform in venues arranged by other Southern CA lodges. They may be using hotels for lodging, but Sven will let us know if home stays need to be arranged. Newsletter: (1) Arlene reported that our publishing company delayed printing and mailing of our newsletter this month. They said it was overlooked with all the election printing they were doing. They apologized and are mailing it today at no charge to us. (2) Arlene is finalizing the directory for 2017. Please let her know of any changes that need to be made, either by emailing or calling her. Erik Nilsen added that it would be a good idea for everyone to check their listing in the 2016 directory, to see if any changes to personal information need to be made. Website: Steve Rawlinson explained how to find the PayPal link on the website. Historian: Jean Shogren reminded us that the Historian position is open, and that it isn’t a difficult job. Corporation: Allen Johannesen reported that the meeting was held tonight, prior to lodge meeting. Sunshine: (1) Wendy Hovland reported that Ingrid Lindgren is not doing well and a card was passed around for everyone to sign. She will also send a get well card to Millie Wright. (2) She sent condolence cards to the fami-lies of Mari Rem and Don Stewart. OLD BUSINESS: (1) Susan reported that she is writing a grant to request funds for our Norwegian language class. She needs two letters of support from members, Steve Rawlinson and Judy Dow volunteered to write them. (2) The lodge still has four open positions for next year, President, Vice President,

Historian and Librarian. In order to keep our charter, key positions such as President must be filled. Susan asked for nomina-tions or volunteers, there were no respons-es. Susan expressed that she is willing to stay on as President, but our by-laws state a two term limit. We did not have a cur-rent copy of our by-laws available at the meeting. It would make sense to amend the by-laws to allow additional terms. This has to be done in writing, and then ap-proved by the membership after allowing time for all to see the proposed amend-ment. There was discussion among mem-bers and it was decided that the Board will ask Susan to stay on as ‘Acting President’ until the by-laws can be amended early next year. (3) Susan reported that the Pod has been removed. NEW BUSINESS: Susan presented 25 year pins to Oddvar Hoidal, Anne Hoidal, and Thelma Johan-nesen. Congratulations to all. FINANCIAL REPORTS: Aprell Bigler read the Financial report. There was no Treasurer report as Millie was unable to attend the meeting due to her auto accident. REMARKS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER: (1) Aprell thanked Erik Nilsen for donat-ing the rolling briefcase for her to use for all of the lodge financial records. She is very pleased with it, and posed with Eric for a picture. (2) Andy Ueland reported that the History Series “The Vikings” will be starting again on Nov. 30 (3) Jean Shogren reminded all to look at the giant “Supermoon” when they leave tonight. It is very beautiful. ADJOURNMENT: The next lodge meet-ing will be December 12. The next lodge social will be December 17. There were 36 members present and the lodge meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM. Respectfully submitted by: Janet Weber Secretary Valhall Lodge #6-25

In Memory

Donald Stewart

Sept. 11, 1940 –Nov. 8, 2016

Donald Stewart passed away at age 76 on November 8, 2016 at Kaiser Hospital. Donald was admitted to Kaiser Hospital on Sunday as he had fallen critically ill. Donald passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, November 8th. Donald was a long and faithful member of Sons of Norway, having joined in 1992. Donald was a member of our favorite singing group, Mannskor, and was an active member of Valhall and enjoyed coming to the Valhall dinners. Donald will be greatly missed by all his friends. Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to Donald Stewart's son,

Mike Stewart, and his daughter, Holly Stewart ,and grandson and family.

A gofundme account has been created for Holly Stew-art to raise money to help pay for funeral expenses and other expenses.

If you would like to donate, please go to www.gofundme.com and search for Holly Stewart. Her gofundme headline is Emergency Leave and there is a picture of her and her son.

Tubfrim There are many ways in which we are asked to assist our fellow human beings who are in need. Participation in the Tubfrim program is one of the more simple yet success-ful ways to do just that. Tubfrim is an organization in Norway that resells cancelled stamps and donates the proceeds to help children with disabilities. Sons of Nor-way is proud to support Tubfrim in their work to support children in need. In 1928 Ditlef Frantzen, postmaster of the small Norwe-gian town of Nesbyen, got the idea to collect and market canceled stamps as a way of raising funds for the Tuber-culosis Association in Norway. Within a few years, his idea caught on and many communities in Norway and beyond were collecting and sending bags of canceled stamps to Nesbyen.

When Frantzen left Nesbyen in 1943, he donated his stamp collecting institution to the Norwegian Health Ser-vice. Since tuberculosis is no longer the threat to health that it once was, today disabled and needy children re-ceive the proceeds from the resale of the stamps. Last year Tubfrim made a profit of 520,000 Kroner (that’s almost $80,000). How can I help? To help Tubfrim do its crucial work, simply clip canceled stamps from envelopes, leaving at least a quarter of an inch around the edge. Bring your stamps to any of our lodge events and give them to Susan Cody, our Tubfrim Chairperson.

A Little in English

Why Norwegians are Driving More Slowly Norwegian motorists have slowed their pace year after year. A wild theory has been that older drivers are slow-ing things down. Now researchers have studied the trend. Several times in recent years traffic authorities have been able to determine that motorists of all ages are slowing down. Data from monitors in areas around the country with a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour), show that the average speed has fallen by 1 kilo-meter per hour (0.62 mph) over the course of five years. It’s not very much, but still a clear break with the tenden-cy that traffic authorities were seeing decades earlier, which was that motorists were steadily driving faster. Surveyed and Interviewed Traffic researchers stood on the roadside and interviewed 204 motorists who passed the monitors. In addition, they recorded license plates and extracted data from the Motor Vehicle Registry of the 3,750 cars and car owners who passed. One of the goals of this study was to determine how much older age among motorists has had an effect on speed reduction. Increased age is not important “We conclude that the in-creased age of the drivers explains maybe 25 percent of the speed reduction. Most of the decline in speed is ex-plained by other factors,” says researcher Torkel Bjørn-skau of TØI (Transportøkonomisk institutt, the Institute of Transport Economics). One such factor is that more cars being on the roads causes motorists to slow down. Another factor is that fewer people are driving recklessly on Norwegian roads. Why there are fewer reckless driv-ers, researchers don’t know. One possible explanation is the increase of boxes with speed counters. Another possi-ble explanation is the increased media attention on road safety and speed. Gender, engine size and make of car In this study re-searchers also found that cars with an owner aged 35-44 were driven fastest. After that, speed sinks steadily with increasing age. The researchers also looked at the drivers' gender. They did not find that speed held any connection with the car driver's gender. Some researchers, however, saw that cars with larger engines are driven faster than cars with small engines. And newer cars are driven faster than old cars.

A Little in Norsk

Og nyere biler blir kjørt fortere enn gamle biler.

Christmas Gift Idea Give the Gift of Sons of Norway this Christmas. Do you have a loved one who is looking for a way to connect with their Norwegian roots? Maybe a friend who’s interested in exploring Nordic cooking? Consider giving a membership to Sons of Norway this holiday season. As you know, there’s so much to being a Sons of Norway member – whether it’s connecting with fellow Norwegians in the lodge or exploring the culture on their own, your loved ones will fuel their interests with a Sons of Norway membership. A gift membership to Sons of Norway opens up a world of benefits for its recipients: like the outstanding Viking magazine, a welcoming network of lodges, cultural pro-grams that introduce Norwegian arts and crafts or valua-ble discounts on things like airfare, hotels and so much more. How many other holiday gifts can give so much? A gift membership doesn’t only benefit its recipient; it’s great for your lodge, too. Giving a membership to a loved one is a great way to introduce them to lodge, es-pecially if they aren’t already familiar with Sons of Nor-way. In fact, many people who’ve been given gift mem-berships across the organization have gone on to be long-term members of lodges. If you’re interested in giving a gift membership for Christmas, contact Sherry Gorse, Membership Services Coordinator at (800) 945-8851.

DISTRICT SIX 6TH ANNUAL BUNAD CAMP

MAY 6-9, 2017 LIMITED TO 12 STUDENTS

To be held at Camp Norge, 250 Canyon Mine Road, Alta, CA

With Sue Sutherland Sue Sutherland studied apparel and textile design man-ufacturing, and learned to make bunader from Thor-bjorg Ugland and Molle Horn, both from Heimen Husflid in Oslo. For many years she embroidered bunader for Odden’s Norsk Husflid in Wisconsin, until she purchased the bunad part of their business in the mid 1990s. Since then she has been mak-ing bunader, teaching bunad courses, and offering authentic materials and accesso-ries through her store, Bunad Butikken, in Ely, Minneso-ta. Sue travels to Norway once a year to pur-chase products for her business and continues her study of the various construction techniques and styles used on bunader from all of the areas of Norway.
