Heritage Dinner Sept 19, 2015
Newsletter Deadline: Aug. 23, 2015
Message from the President
Summer is almost over, and Valhall lodge will resume its meetings and socials
once again! I hope that everyone enjoyed their vacations, and are coming back
to San Diego, ready to start a new Valhallian year.
We will have our first social in September. This will be our heritage dinner,
and we will be served typical Norwegian dishes by our intrepid committee.
There will also be demonstrations of handiwork and cooking, which will also
result in our dessert. (You know that means waffles and krumkake.) We look
forward to this event as a way to bring new members into our lodge. Please
invite those who you feel would be interested in joining Valhall and Sons of
Norway, and they will get a free meal!!
At our board meeting in July, the lodge schedule for 2016 was discussed at
length. It was determined that we would return to having lodge meetings just
before the socials on the third Saturday of the month, but only have four lodge
meetings in the year. This would create only four Saturdays where the events
at the lodge in the afternoon and evening would be a little longer, in order to
take care of lodge business, nominations, etc.
We are in the process of finding out if that
schedule will work for the Masonic board, so
more information will be forthcoming.
2015 has flown by so far, soon it will be Christ-
mas. Let’s all get together and have a great time
at our functions for the rest of the year. See you
soon,
Vennlig hilsen, Susan Cody

The 24th Annual Southern California Kretsstevne
It’s coming in October! The Annual SON multi-lodge
camping get together, - come see what it’s all about!
Save the Date October 23-25, 2015
Southern California Kretsstevne – SCK
If you are new to Sons of Norway you may be won-
dering what SCK is all about. SCK (Southern Califor-
nia Kretsstevne) is an annual weekend gathering that
includes members of lodges in Southern California
and Southern Nevada. Proceeds from the weekend
event help support our lovely Camp Norge in Alta,
California.
Activities at past SCK weekends include games, lefse
demonstration, beginning folk dancing, wood carving,
work on SON Cultural Skills, sing-along, boutique
shopping, and a side trip. Previous events have been
held at Thousand Trails campgrounds in Jamul and
near Idyllwild. One year the event was held in Vista
in conjunction with Norge Lodge’s Viking Festival.
Last year’s SCK was held in Oak Glen, which is
known for its apple orchards. Time was set aside for
shopping, apple picking, or cider tasting in Oak Glen.
The weekend is a time for socializing and meeting
people from other lodges in addition to visiting with
your own members. This is a family event with SCK
activities. The SCK weekend is for everyone, fami-
lies, couples and singles. Come join the fun and meet
other SON members from other lodges.
More information will be available in the next news-
letter, so stay tuned!

LOV NOTES June 2015
Next Meeting: September 5, 2015 at 9:00am. at Denny’s
Restaurant in Fletcher Hills.
Hostesses: Jean Shogren & Rosalie Olson
It was nice to see so many of our LOV members in at-
tendance this month. The room was abuzz with 26 ladies
exchanging what’s new with each other, when I called
the meeting to order using our newly purchased micro-
phone. The minutes and treasurer’s report were read and
approved. Amelia read a thank you letter received from
Peace Lutheran Church acknowledging our donation to
our past member Ellen Holk Memorial fund. She also
reported on her meeting with our bank representative
who helped establish LOV’s non-profit status.
Copies of the revised standing rules were passed out to
members not present in May. Information about Vester-
heim Museum’s fund-raising raffle tickets for a Nordic
sheepskin blanket was distributed. The winner does not
need to be present to win and more information can be
found on their website www.vesterheim.org. There was
also some discussion about possibly meeting informally
during the month of July at Ingrid Lindgren’s home.
Tam Stautland passed out a list of Norwegian Jo Nesbo’s
mystery novels with suggestions on where to locate the
various copies. She also brought several books to lend.
Our summer book club will get together at the House of
Norway on August 1st at 10:00 a.m. We will be exchang-
ing ideas as to why Nesbo is such an internationally best-
selling author. It has been reported that more than 23 mil-
lion copies have been sold worldwide. I have read several
and can verify that if you enjoy reading mystery novels,
you will definitely be entertained by turning the pages in
any one of his novels.
Helen Andrewson brought to our attention that one of the
buildings in the cover photo of the May issue of the Vi-
king Magazine once belonged to her family. I circulated
a copy of the Sweet Paul Cookbook that is also featured
in the May issue. Ragnhild read an interesting article
about Norwegian prisons. Anne shared about her trip in
April to Washington, DC and I told about my Memorial
Day week long trip to North Dakota. Susan’s sister
shared traveling through Seligman, Arizona, and staying
at the Norwegian owned Stagecoach 66 Motel on the his-
toric Route 66. She informed us that it is a stop not to be
missed. You can find it at www.stagecoach66motel.com.
Birthdays and anniversaries were observed with song
before the traditional drawing of names to receive the
centerpieces. Those who went home with flower ar-
rangements in May were: Amelia Seeto-Murguia, Joyce
Oen, Arlene LaBree, LaVonne Couver, Myla Coleman,
and the three birthday gals Susan Cody, her sister Karen
and their mother Arletta Jurasinski.

Stave Church Returns to Norway There are those who leave their home country for a new
life, get comfortable in their new surroundings and eventu-
ally put down roots. On occasion they decide to move back
home in their retirement. This is sometimes the case with
people, but not usually with buildings—until now.
In 1892, a stavkirke (stave church) was constructed in Or-
kanger, west of Trondheim, then dismantled and shipped in
pieces to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The medieval-
style church was on display for six months, after which it
moved to the Wrigley family property along Lake Geneva,
WI. It wasn’t until 1935 that the church had another bout of
wanderlust and packed up again. Isak Dahle purchased the
church and had it moved to his land near Blue Mounds,
Wisconsin.
The structure is known as Thams pavilion, named for its
builder, Norwegian industrialist Christian Thams, and it
became part of an open-air museum called Little Norway,
where tourists came to experience Norwegian architecture,
culture and folk art for 80 years.
In 2012, the museum closed its doors due to flagging at-
tendance and since then, the owner, Scott Winner has been
selling off and donating Little Norway’s 7,000 artifacts,
including all of the structures. Word about the museum’s
closure reached Norway, and Winner was approached by a
group of Norwegians interested in the church’s
“repatriation.” A group of four representatives from the
Orkdal area came to Blue Mounds in April 2015 to assess
the condition of the church. The team consisted of a project
manager, a cultural representative, a construction expert
and a media manager. The hope was that the 122 year-old
structure would be sound enough to withstand shipping and
re-assembly to become a historical attraction in the town
where it was designed and built. Two of the representatives
from Norway are descendants of Peder O. Kvaale, who
carved the detailed relief patterns and dragon-head designs
that are typical stave church adornments. After the inspec-
tion, the Norwegians could hardly contain themselves. They
liked what they saw. They will report their findings to the
Orkdal City Council and if all goes well, the church will be
dismantled over the summer and shipped “back home.”
If the building does indeed move, it will be the fourth time
it has been deconstructed and fifth time being assembled.
But it was made to do so. The inspection team was able to
find painted numbers from the 1935 move that will help
with re-assembly. Winner said he is sad that the church may
be leaving, but finds it romantic that it would return to its
place of origin.

District Six Convention 2016
June 19-22, 2016
Embassy Suites; Loveland, Colorado
Folk Art Exhibition and Competition
Hilsen!
Colorado SON Lodges and District Six Board of Directors look forward to seeing you in Loveland, Colo-
rado, and we invite all members to participate in the 2016 District Meeting Folk Art Exhibition & Com-
petition! We are looking forward to an exciting display of entries – both seasoned participants and first
timers!
At the suggestion of our new District 6 Cultural Director and approval of the District Board, we will
initiate the Danish method of evaluating awards for entries in our Folk Art “competition” at this con-
vention. We will still have all categories of our Folk Arts, we will still have judges, and we will still have
ribbons, but not limited to 1 blue, 1 red, 1 white ribbon for each category. It won’t be “everyone is a
winner” (even though everyone is a winner that takes on learning these skills!) but maybe, for example,
2 blue, no red, 2 white in any one category. We also will not “group” various categories due to limited
entries – each entry will be judged on its own merit. There will still be “Best in Show” chosen by the
judges, and “People’s Choice” awards. We hope this encourages continuous and more participation in this
great part of our biannual meetings. Get busy with those projects! We are looking forward to a record
display of our wonderful Norwegian Folk Arts!
We encourage all District 6 members to participate in this event – whether or not you will be a delegate
to the convention. Entries are accepted as Adult Professional for those who teach and/or sell their art
for financial gain. The Adult Amateur Class is for those who create their art as their past time/hobby
and may share their skill with others, but not for financial gain. Please bring Youth entries – ages 16-20,
and Heritage – 15 and under! They will enter in classes of their own. Remember – all entries must have
been completed by the entrant within the last 2 years – District Meeting 2014-District Meeting 2016.
Pre-registration (June 1, 2016) of your item(s) is essential for set-up and committee planning (limit 2
entries in each category). All entry forms and instructions will soon be available in the District 6 web-
site as well as included in delegate packets. If you will not be attending the convention, arrange with
one of your lodge members who will be representing your lodge to carry your item(s).
We look forward to a great convention and an amazing display of the Folk Art of our heritage, created
today, by our members!. Enjoy working on your projects(s)! Tusen Takk for your participation and for
sharing your talent as we Mine Our Heritage in 2016.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions. I do not answer the phone to unknown numbers so please
wait to leave a message and I will call you back.

New Study Sheds Light on Viking Era The first known accounts of Viking raiding took
place in the late eighth century in 793 at an English
monastery in Lindisfarne. Yet, recently discovered
evidence found in Denmark by archeologists from
the University of Aarhus and the University of York
definitively supports earlier activity among Viking
seafarers prior to the Viking age for the purpose of
trade, not plunder.
Uncovered in an archaeological dig in Ribe—the
oldest known town and commercial marketplace in
Denmark—were antlers belonging to Norwegian
reindeer dating to before 725 AD. An abundant and
easily accessible waste product in Norway used to
make combs, needles and small hand tools, deer ant-
lers would have been a valuable commodity to a
budding commercial center like Ribe, where the raw
material would have been scarce. Archeologists be-
lieve early Norwegian Vikings likely capitalized on
and prospered from this opportunity.
Researchers believe that this new evidence provides
important context to the development of Viking sea-
faring culture and helps shed light on how the first
Norwegian sailors might have gained the skills,
knowledge and wherewithal to embark on extended
sea voyages. “We can now show that the famous
Scandinavian sea voyages, which eventually lead to
the discovery of Iceland and Greenland, have a his-
tory of commercial travel, not just raids. Previously
we were inclined to say that yes, once you can sail
across open water, you can also sail to commercial
towns—now we can turn the equation around and
say that trading towns may have been an important
part of the drive behind developing new technolo-
gies,” says Professor Søren Sindbæk. “We can see
for the first time why they started to invest in ships
and develop the technology. It’s interesting that
when we have two such significant developments
and changes— urbanization and raids across open
water—we can then say that they were infact con-
nected,” said Sindbæk. From SON newsletter files

SIXTY SECOND ROSEMALING SEMINAR
AT CAMP NORGE
September 26/27, 2015
It is time to make your reservations for the adult (18 years and over) Fall Rosemaling Seminar at Camp Norge. We will have three
classes. The teachers are Karen Nelson, Mardella Ivers and Onya Tolmasoff. We will be painting a 14” beaded square plate
.
Karen is teaching a Rogaland pattern on an Oak moss Green background. Mardella will teach a Rogaland design by Vi Thode a
black green background and Onya is teaching a Valdres design on a medium dark green background.
Check the Camp Norge Website for pictures of all three projects: www.campnorge.org
.I don’t have all the pictures yet, but they will be coming shortly, I am assured.
Please make your bed reservation with me. I develop the list of who is in which room. You will pay for your bed when you arrive
at Camp. It is not included in your class fee. Bring your current membership card. If you can’t locate your membership card, bring
the last issue of your Viking Magazine. It has your number in the address box.
Members pay $16.20 per night; guests pay $27.00 for beds in the dorms , which includes 8% Placer County Occupancy Tax.
Only members are allowed to stay in the main house and the cozy cabins.
For people who want to room together, I need to receive the list of names with the first reservation. RV’s are encouraged as we have
a limited number of beds. Members pay $25 per night for up to four people per RV. Guests pay $35 per night for RV’s
.
Camp has electrical and water, but no sewer hookups. Tents are $15 for up to four people for members, $20 for non members.
No occupancy tax on RV’s or tents.
Pets are $2 per night. Pets are not allowed in any of the buildings, pool area or sleeping rooms at any time.
Please include your full phone number, address and lodge name and number when registering. If you have email, please include y
our email address. It is so much faster and cheaper if I need to talk to you.
The supply lists will be sent when I receive your registration form and check.
ABSOLUTELY NO EMAIL RESERVATION REQUESTS.
I need the check and registration form together.
Be sure to send a self addressed stamped envelope for your supply list and class confirmation information if you do not have e-
mail. I will not be sending you a supply list unless you send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope or your e-mail address with
your registration form. I use Microsoft Word running on the Windows 7 program
The cost of the seminar will be $87 for registration which includes the class and wood piece, all base coated and ready to go,
hall rent,and the meals.
There will be $25 cancellation fee for any cancellations, but absolutely no cancellations after Sept. 9th
.
It is difficult for people on the waiting list to take your place if they do not have at least a couple of weeks to make their plans, so
please be thoughtful.
Melanie Souza will again do our cooking. The cost for food for the weekend is included in the $87 registration fee. The food in-
cludes breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.
You were so very generous and cooperative with the cookies last time. I do so appreciate that.
We will ask just one class to bring cookies, and will rotate those classes each time. The information will be on your supply list.
My e-mail address is [email protected]
.My phone number is (916)941-6433. Please cut off and complete the following registration form, make your check payable to Pen-
ny (not Camp Norge) and return as soon as possible with your stamped, self-addressed envelope for supply list if you do not wish to
receive it by e-mail, to:
Penny Joseph Knudsen, 3774 Park Drive, El Dorado Hills, California 95762
