There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

    EDITORIAL...

Supreme Court should now realise its forgotten responsibility

The Supreme Court has recently struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission

Act, 2014. The basis for the judgement is the established principle that independence of the Judiciaryis a basic feature of the Constitution and for this to be preserved the Judiciary should have thedominant voice in the appointment of the Judges to the Apex Court so as to insulate it from Politicaland Executive Pressures.

The Court has extensively quoted from the earlier judgment by the largest Bench in its historyin the Keshavananda Bharathis case AIR 1973 SC 1461 in which the basic structure of the Constitutiontheory was expounded. In the last many years, The Supreme Court did not strictly adhere to itsprinciple Yato Dharmasthatho Jayaha while deciding most of the cases relating to interpretation ofArt 25 and Art 26 which guarantees Right to Freedom of Religion which is part of the basic structureof our Constitution flowing from the Preamble promise of LIBERTY OF Thought, Expression, Belief,Faith and Worship.

Today, the Supreme Court has assumed more and more authority through the EssentialPractices Doctrine in Judgements surprisingly delivered by Benches of two or three Judges to the

extent that today the Judges have greater power than that of a High Priest, Maulvi or Dharmasastri,Judges have virtually assumed the theological authority to determine which tenets are essentialto any faith and emphatically underscored their constitutional power to strike down those essentialtenets of a faith that conflict with the dispensation of the constitution.

Few religious pontiffs possess this kind of power and authority. This has been achievedthrough a key shift: the word essential has gone from qualifying the nature of the practice (i.e.,whether it is religious or secular), to qualifying its importance(within the religion) i.e., from whethersomething is essentially religiousto whether it is essential to the religion. It is a minor grammaticalshift, but with significant consequences, because it allows the Court to define questions that areinternal to religion in a judicial enquiry, and thereby define the nature of the religion itself.

The Supreme Court unfortunately has used Judicial independence for reforming the religion againstthe spirit enshrined in the Preamble of our Constitution a part of the basic structure of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court which has applied the basic structure test of the Constitution to preserveits independence has not used the same yardstick to preserve the independence of the religiousinstitutions from Governmental control.

The Court has allowed the destruction of the Spiritual Purpose of the Hindu Temples. Ameans to achieve purpose of life for crores of Hindus through Politicization, Corruption and Commercializationthe very ills that it has quoted in the NJAC judgement for insulation of selection of Judges from thePolitical Executive but had not responded adequately when similar concerns were raised in selectionof trustees for the Hindu Temples

The Supreme Court also needs to introspect and take necessary corrective steps byacknowledging the fact that as much as an independent Judiciary is part of the basic feature of theConstitution, Similar yardstick should be used by the Court to free the Hindu Temples under GovernmentalControl. The Religious Freedom guaranteed to our Citizens is forgotten now.

An apex body called the Dharmika Parishad which includes Religious Heads, Retired Judges

of merit, Devotees of Repute, archakas and other stake holders to regulate the general Temple Administrationin each State has been proposed as a solution by various Committees such as the Justice RamaJois Committee, AP Legislature Select Committee, P.V.R.K Prasad Committee and also demandedby Peetadhipathis but still such a body is not constituted in any State in the Country. The SupremeCourt in 2013 was circumspect and purely technical when it was approached that the StatutoryBody included in the Endowments Amendment Act 33/2007 called Dharmika Parishad was not beingconstituted for so many years in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Since the Courts have woken up and started correcting themselves, VAK and Temples ProtectionMovement will sensitise the Devotees to be vigilant when matters related to Hindu Temples comebefore these Constitutional Courts. The temples cannot be run as per the whims and fancies of the

Executive and supported by the Judiciary as is being done now.

    Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama -176

Dinamalar, a Tamil News paper dated 14.10.2015carried a four column news on Srimathi Usharani.Smt. Usharani aged 44 now, married to Shri Jothibasu, and was living in Avaniyapuram, a suburban ofMadurai. They had three female children and onemale child. Jothibasu got addicted to drinks. Hisdaily routine was to drink. And in the inebriatedcondition he would beat his children and Usharani. This cruelty reached its peak when once he triedto rape his eldest daughter. Usharani fell at his feetand tried to explain to him that it was highly improperfor him to indulge in this perversion. But Jothibasu, intoxicated, would not listen. On one unfortunate day in 2011, when things wentbeyond control, Usharani was forced to murder herhusband to protect the honour of her daughter.Avaniyapuram police ultimately arrested her. Sri AsraGarg, I.P.S the then S.P of Madurai personally wentthrough the details of the case and was convincedthat Usharani had killed her husband only in theprocess of protecting herself and the dignity of herown daughter. He therefore filed the case under section100 of IPC which deals with murder for self defenseand ordered Usharani be released.Usharanis father-in-law went to the court againstthis order. Court considered the case appropriatelyand released Usharani from the murder case.

Usharani later studied in the Tamil Nadu OpenUniversity and obtained a degree in sociology. Shehas now given her eldest daughter in marriage; theother two daughters are studying Post Graduatecourses; her son is in tenth standard.Referring to this background Usharani had said inher interview to DinamalarIf I were booked in murder case and put in jail, life of my daughters and son would have been ruined. It was very kind of Sri Asra Garg, who is from anotherstate to consider the case appropriately in my favour.Because of my own efforts, I have now become agraduate and am able to keep my family intact. Myfather-in-law has grabbed my share in the ancestralsite for building house and agricultural lands. Heis refusing to give the property to me. Now I am inthe process of getting it through legal means.Srimathi Usharani is now working as temporary DTPoperator in Tamil Nadu Open University.I had a vision after reading this report in the daily.Sage Narada was in Kylash recently and during hisdiscussion with Paramasiva on worldly matters, hereferred to this piece of news.Paramasiva laughed and said Narada! Do you knowI was also called a murderer by Brahma for my

chopping of one of the five heads of his? I was forcedto do this because Brahma also was behaving likeJothibasu, in that he was trying to enjoy a beautifuldame created by himself i.e. his own daughter. WhenI intervened and told him that it was not proper, hegot wild and said: I am elder to you. How is thatyou are trying to give me sermons? To ensure the girl was protected, I had to do somedamage to him because finishing him who had sippednectar is not possible. I could chop off one of hisfive heads. Like the Avaniyapuram police, Brahmaarrested me. I mean he cursed me that the skullof his head I chopped off would always stick to myhand and I would be wandering seeking arms inthe skull for my food. I underwent the curse likeUsharani spending her time in lock up. I ultimately, had to go to Lord Narayana, who I thought wouldappreciate the situation and release me like ShriGarg IPS.Lord Narayana has been doing penance in Himalayas.I knew He alone would be capable of relieving meof this curse for He is the only person who hasovercome the diverting senses and even under worstcircumstances had been calm and cool. He wouldnot be affected by the situation. Nothing could distractor tempt him.Indra did not know that Narayana in the form of a

sage with His disciple Nara, another form of Hisself , was performing penance in Badarikashramain Himalayas to teach the universe how a preceptorand a student should pray for universal prosperity.Indra thought Narayana was someone like any othersage and would be a hindrance to him if Narayanaspenance continued and Narayana got more powers. He therefore sent a team to disturb, distract anddestroy the penance of Narayana. The team was led by Cupid. A batch of celestialbeauties Rambha, Menaka, Grithachee etc, sangand danced before Lord Narayana with the aim ofdisturbing his concentration. The intention was toshake Narayana from his firmness.Cupid was also assisted by his companion, the vernalseason and the southern zephyr in disturbing Narayanaagain and again with the arrows of the side glancesof the heavenly damsels who wore amorous graces. But Lord Narayana was unshaken.Cupid and his team now got afraid of him. Theythought that Narayana would curse them. ButNarayana addressed Cupid with a gentle smile.Dear Cupid! He said, Enough of your fears. Kindlyunderstand that the aim of my penance is not todislodge Indra; but to show to the world how to be

calm and perform penance as a pair of Guru andSishya. Indra has brought out the unshakable firmnessof mine by his comedy- piece of trying to temptme by your team. I have to thank him and give hima gift for his proving my firmness as a performer ofpenance. Please inform him of this and give himmy gift.He showed a team of beautiful maidens who wereworking as His attendants. He then gently tappedhis lap and this Lap- tap resulted in a beautifuldame emerging from there. She rightly earned the name Urvasi. For Uru inSanskrit means lap and Urvasi means the damethat emerged from lap.The fragrance of the maids that were serving Narayanaand Urvasi infatuated all the members of the team.Lord Narayana gifted Urvasi to Devendra. Urvasi putan end to the pride of all the beauties in heaven.Unlike Brahma who could get infatuated by his own

daughter here is Lord Narayana whom nothing couldinfatuate. Those that came to infatuate Him wereinfatuated. The hunters became the hunted.I therefore thought Narayana alone could understandthat my removing one of the five heads of Brahmawas to save him from sinning due to infatuation andalso the honour of the dame. I deserved considerationlike Usharani.I approached Lord Narayana in Badarikashrama andsubmitted to him the details. With a smile He piercedHis chest with nails of His hand. Blood flew fromHis chest like a stream and filled the skull in myhand. Next moment, the skull slipped from my handand fell towards the north east of the ashram.I was purified thus by the blood of Lord Narayana.I submitted to Narayana All human beings are createdby Brahma, in the sense that he unites each soulwith flesh and gives them birth in families accordingto their deeds of the past. All of them because oftheir connection with Brahma will have in their genean iota of infatuation of Brahma and so mightmisbehave with and damage the honour of thevery same ones whom they are supposed to protect. You may kindly bless the pilgrims to Badarikashramaby a declaration that their offering your Prasadamas food in the skull of Brahma to the departed soulsof the family would protect them and their future

generations from sinning by such infatuations.Let it be so said the Lord.

Narada said:-Now only I understand thehidden aspects of the incident of removing one ofthe five heads of Brahma and making him four-headed.Paramasiva smiled and said Narada! What is themessage you got from this anecdote??Narada stood still.Paramasiva continued Actual message behind myAnecdotes and even the Anecdotes of Brahmascreations like Jothibasu -husband of Usharani getting

intoxicated and enhancing their infatuation is thatnone other than Lord Narayana can be unshakabledespite situations created like those created byCupid under the orders of the envious forces likeIndra. Submission to His Grace alone will saveus. Why do you feel so? Did you not reduce Cupidto ashes? Narada reminded Paramasiva of theincident of his burning Cupid to ashes when heattempted to disturb Paramasivas penance usingParvathys beautyMy getting angry and burning Cupid to ashes isevidence enough to my loosing the race. Comparethis with Lord Narayana calmly counseling Cupidand giving Urvasi as a gift to Indra through him.Add to this my infatuation for Mohinee despite myknowing it was only a makeup of Lord Narayana!Narada offered his salutations to Parameshwaraand left Kailas uttering Narayana!

Because of these aspects, Lord Narayana is calledMahaveerya. Many of us experience a few drops of deodorantsprayed on our bodies conquering the bad odourof our body because of its presence. Similarlybecause of His presence in their minds He makesthe Yogis to control themselves even in uncontrollablesituations. But He alone is unshakable without anyothers support under any circumstances that canmake others tense. He is rightly called Mahaveerya.(Some of the readers may feel confused by thereason given in this version for Paramasivaschopping one of the five heads of Brahma. Thereare other versions like the ego clash between thetwo because each had five heads .Such variationsare based on different cycles of incidents in thelong history of universe.Someone says Mumbai Indians are IPL champions;someone else says Chennai Super Kings are theIPL champions. Both need not be contradictory. For Mumbai Indians were IPL champions in oneseries. Chennai Super Kings were the IPL championsin another series. This is what Traditional scholars deem askalpabhedam)Nirukti sums up all these when it says,

    Madhura Vijayam - 49

Story so far: Thestory based on the 14thcentury incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is based on

the historic facts elucidated in Madhura Vijayamcomposed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief Queen ofKing Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha andDutta set out on an expedition to locate the idol ofLord Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved andkept hidden by four Kodavas without being ransackedby Muslim invaders. After several adventures the twoboys, with the help of Chenchu tribes found the idolalong with one Kodava who protected the idol for morethan eighteen years deep inside the forest ofChandragiri. Lord Ranganatha was brought to Tirumalaby King Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler of that placeas it was decided that the idol should not be takento Srirangam as it was still under Sultans rule. Vallabhaand Dutta who stayed in Tirumala requested daily

worship of Lord Ranganatha with Tamil prabhandhamsas per practice at Sri Rangam. In order to persuadethe Vijayanagar king Bukka Raya to take-up theexpedition of restoring Lord Ranganatha at Sri RangamVallabha took to fast unto death. Coincidentally SriGopanna, commander-in-chief of the Vijayanagarasmulvoy province reaches Tirumala in search of LordRanganatha. He intervenes in the fast of Vallabhaand vows to restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam, starts acting on the vow and thus ending Vallabhasfast. Vallabha and Datta turned to Kancheepuramon their way back and were shocked to know thatSinghazagar had passed away and Manjari was leftall alone. Both Vallabha and Dutta got affected verydeeply as they could not share the good news to theman who was behind this whole expedition. Theyensured safety of Manjari with her neighbors and leftthe town with disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doorswere closed as a defense to an impending attack byVijayanagar army. The disguised Vaishnava leaderwas no other than Camphor merchant who revealedthat he was the head of Intel l igence army ofVijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the Vijayanagar menwere pursued, but they managed to kill all the pursuersand escaped and reached the foothills of the mountainon which Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the behestof Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter theRajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescueMakaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace whileselling gems to the queen. Datta wanted to abort themission and go while Vallabha stays firm. After somemutual arguments the parting friends unite again tothe mission and go to meet the princess again

As soon as Maharani (queen) shouted Hey.. Vallabhagot tensed and in a shivering of his hands he droppedthe palm leaf message to Madhurangini on the floor. The queen ran to it at once, grabbed it, read it andbecame red with anger.

Catch them! Arrest them shouted the Queen

Her servant Eunuchs started drawing their swords. As soon as this happened Datta reacted fast. He took

his sword, jumped near the Queen, grabbed her andshouted.

Stop there! If anyone tries to do anything I will killyour Queen! said Datta firmly gripping the hands ofthe Queen.

The Queen tried to scream but Datta closed her mouth.

Soon Datta realized the situation and started to swiftlybring it in control. He brandished his sword and toldHey you all! Put your swords down !

All the Eunuchs dropped their respective swords.Vallabha ran to the fragrance fire pot and dropped alot of fragrance powder in it. There was a thick cloudof smoke which made the whole place dark. Vallabhaimmediately grabbed Datta and both of them escapedin the darkness of the smoke.

It took a while for the smoke to clear off. Everyonetill then stood motionless. When the smoke clearedoff and each one could see each other the Queenshouted O! Catch them! Catch them!

The Eunuchs ran in all directions. There are two doorsfor the inner palace and they ran through it shouting.Soon the message reached the head of palaceservants Sarvanayaka and the head of palace securityguards who are responsible for people who go inand come out of the palace. They all sent armed menin search of the palace security breachers.

Close the doors of the fort and dont leave anyoneto go outside the message has been sent to thefort guards in all the entrances of the fort.

As the whole Rajagambhira city is under alert andin turmoil, Vallabha and Datta were hiding at thebasement of the palace and were tense.

The palace was at a good height. They jumped downout of the big window. They thought that the portionwill be some part of the palace and if anyone sightsthem before the message reaches, they can tellsomething as a reason and escape. Before the wholecity and fort gate keepers know their plan was to escape. But they fell in an old palace portion which wasdilapidated. In front of this place, around 10 feetaway there is a deep protective water bod, after whichthere is the boundary wall of the fort. On turning back, there is an entrance to the palace. Because severalyears ago someone committed suicide falling in the

water body they have closed this entrance with stonewall. When they tried to go side ways they found twobig stone walls extending up to the water body. Thosewalls go a long way along the fort water body meantfor protection. In essence both of them have falleninto a place where they felt like being boxed up.

On the southern banks of the clean, pure and sparklingwatered Tungabhadra river stood that new city shiningin the evening sun rays. The terrace of big mansions, towers of big mansions, the sharpness of the towers, big multi storied floral mantapams and many largehouses touch the sky at many places in this city.

Further great scholar Dr. SohatturRamanujacharya spoke as follows:

Soundararajan has made an important request

to the Jeer and all of us. He has been toiling for thebenefit of the Mutt since the period of his father ChilkoorVenkataraghavacharyar. He has been instrumental inbringing out telugu edition of Nrusimhapriya. TheSampradaya of Ahobila Mutt started from Ahobilamin A.P. From long period of time his father had beenmanaging as General power of attorney Agent forAndhra Pradesh all the temples and mutts belongingto Ahobila Mutt such as Ahobilam, Cudappah, Gadwal,Kurnool etc. He is with great difficulty protecting theirtemple in Chilkoor without any interference from theGovernment. Without stopping there, he alone singlehandedly has been trying to protect all 34000 templesin Andhra Pradesh spearheading a movement throughVAK journal. He has been fighting for the rights of

the archakas and protecting them. The temples shouldrun as per agamas and should not a place forextraneous factors to take control. Temples shouldbe only centre of devotion and nothing other than that.He has been strongly and single handedly fightingfor the above causes. When there were issues in TTD,Sri Soundararajan swamy used to pitch in and showproper authentic information to solve the tough issuesthere. He has been fighting for the cause of templeseven in Supreme court of India. By gods grace hehas been able to protect the system so far by influencingmany people in many regions and many walks of life. While the will of god may be existing to protect thesystem, there is also duty of devotees like us to supportand fight for the cause along with him. We have a

lots to do. Many a times we face many issues intemples management which is tough to handle. IfProf Soundararajan says we have to protect, peoplelisten and go but do very little after that. It is easy tohand over temples due to difficulty in managing tothe government. If the devotees behave well in thesaid ways as per agamas we may not have to facethis difficulty. We are slowly losing our customs andtraditions and we all need to take a vow that we willnot let this happen to deteriorate further. Today,Government seems to have realized and have somewhat moved away from policy of interefernce. But theyhave to get confidence that the management will dowell and they will not do any misappropriations. Thereis lot of opposition to good system as usual. If we

dont look for people but if we look for Lord Nrusimhathen we can protect the institute. If we take thepermission and we dont run the institutions wellthen that is also not right. Today we have over 65years of Government control. It is an opportunity totake back control from Government. If they give also, can we run? Do we have proper Archakas? They shouldbe trained. There were many proposals but did notmaterialize. People are not willing to practice devotionto Lord. They have become materialistic. We shouldconsider temple worship as our own duty and notothers duty. If we consider this as our duty by heartthen Lord will make it happen like he did for Prahlada.

AHOBILAM AND AHOBILA MUTT - 42- M.V.Soundara Rajan

But we all should will it by heart and try for it. Lord isour antharyami and we should behave in such a waythat we dont oppose him, i.e. our own inner atma.

Yamoraja..If our thinking, speech and action stay in one

line towards Lord then Lord will support us. If we canswim in the opposing water. The Lord is also readyto protect these type of people who want to fight fordharma in Kali yuga. All cannot be done byAzhagiyasingar. We also should do and then we willalso have support of Lord. If we think it as our dutyconsidering the future generations and createopportunities to pass on traditions like samsrayanam, bharanyasam to others then we will be doing good. There were great stalwarts like Thirupptkuzhi swamywhen he walks into the court both opponents andsupporters would stand up. We dont have peopleof such charisma today. Knowledge, practice should

be upkept. We should not leave our traditions andacharams and they should be protected and upkept.Dharm that I thought should come from inside.Importantly He took the report of the trainings runand he has given a report to A.P.Govt. We should tryand protect what we have learnt. The shishyas of Muttshould all know about this. When we see the downfall of dharma we are not able to tolerate. We shouldget out of it. If we want to do the Lord will definitelysend a Soundararajan to show us the way. I say toProf Soundararajan that you have Visa balaji to protectyou. He is still doing puja even though he is aprofessor. His son is also doing pooja. It is very difficultto get ones daughter married to a good dharmik person. We should help these kind of people who fight for

dharma and follow dharma. The only way to fight non-dharma is to follow dharma. All should work for dharmaand Lord will protect like Nrusimha. What ever goodwill come by one pradakshina of earth all that willcome by one pradakshina of Nrusimha. We have totake advise of great souls like Soundararajan to showus way. Only then evil power will be vanquished.Hiranyakashipu is still there today. Dharma cannotbe incidentally protected. It should be schemed andthen only protection is possible. Dharma should becollected bit by bit and grown. Let the grace of godand Azhagiyasingar be with us to help in protectingdharma.

Both the speeches of the 46th Jeer of AhobilaMutt and Dr. Sohattur Ramanujachariar have reallyconveyed a great message to disciples to start theirearnest efforts and join hands in fighting againstconstant deterioration of traditional values and templessystem. Lets us all work towards reinstating pastglory to Ahobilam, Ahobila Mutt and all the templesassociated with it including Gadwal Chennakeshavaswamy temple in Telangana, Andhra and other states.Let the movement to protect temples raise to newheights and restore a new era by recovering losttraditional values which can be done with devotionand commitment to Lord Lakshmi Nrusimha.

The rajagopuram' of Sri Chennakesava Ramalingeswara Swamytemple at Sanivarapupeta on the city outskirts, reportedly builtduring the period of East Chalukyas some 1,000 years ago, hasbeen conserved due to the untiring efforts of one social activist.Old Conservation materials like lime stone Brick and Mortar havebeen used to conserve this monument which is standing tall dueto the heritage lover called Ayyangar.Dwaraka Tirumala Devasthanam which funded the wholerestoration needs to be appreciated for heeding to the orders ofthe Courts and the Archaelogical Department. The Tendency nowadays is to demolish the old heritagemonuments and construct Brand new ones in their place. Thelife of Cement structures is only 40 years. These ancientstructures have stood for hundreds of years. The five-storied structure with a height of 77 ft has become amute witness to a triangular fight between the Endowments,Archaeology & Museums departments and civil society groupsover its existence.

The Endowments Department was all set to go for reconstructionof the rajagopuram' in view of the danger its weak' structureposed to the people around. The Archaeology & MuseumsDepartment sought to adopt a conflicting stand while striving forits preservation in association with the local groups concerned. The structure was not given a facelift due to a series ofcontroversies. Premkumar, the then Executive Officer of SriVenkateswara Swamy temple at Dwaraka Tirumala under whose

jurisdiction the management of the rajagopuram' fell, initiatedrenovation works. But the process was stalled by a stay order obtained by a socialactivist from the High Court, saying such unilateral' measureswould pose a threat to sculptures of monumental value. Thoughthe Endowments Department had re-started work in associationwith the Archaeology Department in a manner that they would

not cause any harm to the sculptures, a technical committeeappointed by the State government to study its safety pressedfor suspension of repairs on the plea that they would yield noresult when there were signs of breakage in the basement ofthe rajagopuram.'The four-member expert committee, constituted in the backdropof collapse of a galipuram' at Srikalahasti, had stressed the needfor dismantling the existing structure and go for reconstructionskeeping in mind the perceptible' threat to its existence.B.K.S.R. Ayyangar, a social activist working for preservation ofheritage sites, differed with the findings of the committee andsaid reconstruction structure might lead to disfigurement of thehistorical structure. M.V.S.S. Vishnu Prasad, DeputyCommissioner of the Endowments Department, observed, Humansafety comes first and archaeological concerns next. We are

bound to adhere to the findings of the technical committee withregard to the fate of the rajagopuram,' he added.Retired professor in Geo Engineering from the National Instituteof Technology (NIT) in Warangal M. Panduranga Rao did notagree with the recommendation of the Technical AdvisoryCommittee (TAC) of the government to demolish the historicalrajagopuram' of Sri Chennakesava and Ramalingeswara Swamytemple located at Sanivarapupeta on the city outskirts. The temple constructed during the eastern Chalukya period wasin a dilapidated condition.I do agree that the structure suffers some minor cracks hereand there while its basement undergoes the process ofsettlement due to the age factor. But the situation does not warrant

demolition as suggested by the TAC and it bears no signs ofdistress, Mr. Rao said after examining the structure . He alsoreceived inputs from Mohd. Raheem Shah Ali, Deputy Director

(Engineering), and Bhima, structural engineer, who were part ofthe TAC from the Department of Archaeology, and B.K.S.R.Iyengar, a social activist. The question of demolition would not arise as long as the superstructure of the rajagopuram' did not develop cracks in such amanner that they could result in settlement of its foundation. There were no such distressing signs observed anywhere inthe rajagopuram', Mr. Rao had stated. He, however, said he wouldmake a request to the authorities of the NIT to depute an expert instructural designing for designing the steel frames for erectionaround the structure so as to transmit the load of the superstructure to the steel frames as an additional factor of safety.Mr. Rao suggested reinforcement of the foundation with limeconcrete mortaring around the basement to check percolationof water into the foundation.

The district administration was asked to initiate steps for trafficdiversion on the busy Eluru-Nuzvid Road in order to save therajagopuram' from vibrations caused by heavy movement ofvehicles, which might result in settlement of its basement.Rapid urbanisation characterised by a vehicular boom coupledwith high levels of noise and air pollution posed a serious threatto the 400-year old Rajagopuram of Sri Chennakesava Swamytemple at Sanivarapupeta, a stones throw away from the city. The five-storied structure, with the first floor built with sandstone and remaining four floors with brick masonry in limestone, dates back to the period of East Chalukyas who ruled the areaduring 15-16 centuries AD. Strikingly, the structure, 60ft in height, which has been declared a protected monument by theDepartment of Archeology and Museums, stands out in the heartof the village with many residential buildings around.

The proposal to save the Rajagopuram from vibrations causedby the movement of heavy vehicles on the Eluru-Nuzvid road, which passes on the northern side of the structure, gathereddust, thanks to official apathy. The Technical Advisory Committeeappointed by the State government had recommended that thedistrict administration divert heavy vehicles, like RTC buses andtrucks laden with construction material, on a war-footing tosave the structure from further damage. The committee, during a field visit, observed that roof slabs hadbroken into four pieces, there were cracks on the outer wall ofthe structure and soil basement supporting the foundation of thestructure was sinking due to vibrations caused by movement ofheavy vehicles, among others. The then district Collector wroteto the Superintendent of Police to constitute an official committeerepresenting the police, Roads and Buildings, RTC, Transport,Revenue etc to explore the possibilities for traffic diversion, skirting the Rajagopuram. Another committee of experts fromthe National Institute of Technology, Warangal, appointed by theDepartment of Archeology and Museums carried out soil test, foundation and structural tests and came out with similarrecommendations. But the proposal failed to materialise. B.K.S.R.Ayyangar, a social activist waging a lone battle for preservationof the monumental structure, said the alleged inaction by theadministration on the issue spoke of its utter disregard forprotection of heritage sites.Despite all of this... Now, the Restoration and Conservation iscomplete and the glorious sight is depicted on the front page ofVAK, November 2015.

NEWS Don't let words spoil relationshipsRangarajan - Hereditary Archaka, Chilkur Balaji TempleOur mind observes, analyses, creates and instructs, It isa machine that constantly seeks knowledge andinformation. The mind is cluttered with so much

information that sometimes it gets lost, as a resultfrustration, anger, depression follow along with hurtfulwords and action.

Up to a certain level hurtful acts can be dismissedas mistakes. In such cases an apology or repentance isenough to move ahead. But hurtful words can never betaken back, erased or repented for. This is because wordsdon't harm the physicality of a person, it harms the mind, emotions, damaging the very spirit of a relationship.

Several times beautiful bonds, marriages, brotherhood and friendships are broken not by deeds butwith one single hurtful word. That word remains forever atear in the relationship. Trust is broken, friendships sink, hope is lost and our fragile society, which is made up of all

these delicate connections, loses its balance, creating aplace of distress, suspicion, crime and violence.

Swachh soch is not just about thinking good forothers, but also about forgiving and acceptingrelationships more than words, Swachh bol - that wordscommunicate with words - is the basic response systemof the universe. We can't control what information wereceive, but we can definitely control the information welet out through our words. (Metro India 10.10.2015)
