s you might imagine, producing a magazine featuring some of the finest luxury properties in Florida, a good portion of our time is spent examining absolutely breathtaking homes. In this issue’s home feature, we share with you some of the marvelous kitchens that took our breath away. If my kitchen were as inspiring as the oceanfront kitchen featured on page 20, even I would be moved to attempt some feat of culinary mastery. My frozen chicken pot pies would look
shamefully out of place in such a gourmet oasis. If the key to a man’s heart is through his stomach, perhaps, the key to a good cook is in the quality of her kitchen? When I acquire an oceanfront kitchen, I’ll let you know.
Also in this issue, we offer a glimpse of one of the finest golf and country clubs in all of Southwest Florida, The Oaks Club. Hailing from the land of antebellum mansions and ancient oaks myself, I felt right at home at the elegant, Southern inspired clubhouse. The design of the expansive clubhouse is grand but with a feminine flair unlike most clubs that present a more masculine
atmosphere. Considering the land was developed on the former homesite of Bertha Honore Palmer, a great patron of Sarasota and women’s issues, The Oaks Club is a fitting homage to a fascinating lady.

rightful role as the heart of the home. During the past couple of decades American women have been liberated …..and so too has the kitchen. The kitchens of the past, often located in remote corners of the house or wedged into long, narrow, dark galleys, have been lightened up and liberated, replaced with expansive views, high ceilings, and cabinets galore. This new age workplace has propelled its way into the 21st century.
Today’s open-plan kitchen model is a prominent “high voltage” spot, an area of visual interest as well as togetherness. David Johnson, publisher of Kitchen Trends magazine remarks on this movement in a recent issue, “In days gone by, when kitchens were hidden in the back of the house, function and cleanliness were the only criteria that mattered. Now, the kitchen is front and center – it’s often part of the main living and entertaining space – and we want it to reflect our personality and complement the overall décor of our home.”
With the kitchen’s new role on center stage, it presents enormous potential for adding lots of pizzazz to your home. chrome fixtures, or may emanate a “been here forever” feel, with soaring crossbeams and expansive views extending natural light with transom and high-arched windows. Warm, honey-finished planked wood flooring unifies the living area and continues under a formal dining table. The kitchen merges into the mix via a vintage furniture cabinet adapted for an island. Traditional….kicked up a notch!
Irrespective of the design statement, the current kitchen storage solutions are found in many cabinet options; those with glass doors are especially nice as they assist family and guests in finding things easily. Custom cabinets are often cleverly masked as furniture pieces in the kitchen and their finishes may take on many faces besides furniture styles, some offering unique or brilliant pops of color that effectively define spaces or create a focal point for the room. Dark wood finishes offer wonderfully rich ambiance, and of course, white cabinets are always a brilliant choice. Renowned designer Bunny Williams remarked in a recent discussion of cabinet finishes, that we don’t seem to ever get tired of a white kitchen. Of all the kitchens she has had through the years, she has been happiest when they are fairly neutral. All bets are on - personal taste gets free rein for this selection.
Today’s kitchen will most likely offer an island (or two). Islands can support both action and ambiance. The chef, no longer relegated to a separate out-of-the-way place to cook, now has the opportunity to be part of the scene. This innovative “hub-of-the-home” links the kitchen with adjacent living spaces and fulfills a range of functions: an extra prep or clean-up station, bar or a buffet for entertaining, homework or craft station and an opportunity for a welcoming space with the feel of a cozy kitchen table. If it is the site of the cooktop, it has the perk of providing loads of generous storage with deep drawers to keep pots and pans right where they’re needed. Whether you desire old world charm or modern sleek surrounds, islands are carefully designed to marry with the décor of their surroundings. Located front and center, they are frequently presented as an inspiration piece highlighting exclusive cabinetry in finished woods with outstanding details - equivalent to any fine piece of furniture. Island end caps provide opportunity for display space… shelves for treasured collections, pottery, or possibly a cookbook library. When powered with the latest in technology, an island now affords a place to recharge your computer and smart phone.
Many of these rapid technological advances have driven kitchen functions and design, which have swung like a pendulum. It has been the “in” and the “out” room, both literally and figuratively, its evolution fueled by available sources of energy. Descriptions of our earliest ancestors picture them cooking around a fire pit (some of us still do, but for fun). With the advent of the chimney, cooking and congregating moved indoors. By the time America was being homesteaded the family gathered in a cabin (remember “Little House on the Prairie”) around the “island” of the hearth.
By the early 1900’s the carte du jour of American kitchen design had shifted and the kitchen became a separate room that often took a back seat in the home. The availability of convenience foods (say “hello” to Bisquick and Spam) made “cooking everything from scratch” optional. The kitchen found itself again in “lock-up” mode as “packaged meals” and a large menu of eating out options screamed “freedom” for the cook. “Sweating over a hot stove all day” became more of an expression than a requirement….and that trend has had a long run!
The kitchen of 2012 - supporting the creation of healthy fare and fulfilling a renewed desire to “nest” - is free at last. The exhilarating attractions at Busch Gardens appeal to the young, as well as the young-at-heart while the sports enthusiast will certainly find someone to cheer for with professional baseball, football and hockey teams in town.
IN THE NEWSBayshore Boulevard is getting ready to welcome development of an eight-story Spanish-Eclectic, $68 million apartment community just south of the Platt Street Bridge. After years of placing the high-end project on hold, Crescent Resources is ready to build at 319 Bayshore Blvd. The 367-unit apartment community named, Circle Bayshore, boasts close proximity to the water, entertainment and dining venues. The first apartments are scheduled to be finished in the first quarter of 2014.
With the recent opening of USF’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation, experts are predicting it will draw as many as 60,000 medical professionals a year to downtown Tampa. The $38 million facility, with 90,000 square feet, has high-tech simulators where doctors can practice surgical techniques without actually touching a patient.
The city of St. Petersburg has decided to replace the City Pier’s iconic inverted pyramid with a project called the Lens, a striking structure with looping bridges and a tiara-looking canopy towering over a natural reef. The $50 million budget and plan welcomes the community, via a series of public hearings, to tweak the plans, making it unlikely that construction will begin before 2013. The futuristic design has sparked new energy and excitement with Pinellas County residents.

ShopBeneath the towering oak trees of one of Tampa’s oldest and most glamorous neighborhoods is Hyde Park Village, an eclectic collection of specialty shops, from designer boutiques to unique local stores full of treasures.

Those in search of upscale retail establishments such as Saks Fifth Avenue will enjoy WestShore Plaza and the International Plaza, world-class retail shopping destinations. In addition to Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, approximately half of International Plaza’s 200 specialty shops are new to the area, including Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, J. Crew and Cole Hahn.

IN THE NEWSSarasota’s popular children’s museum has launched an ambitious rebranding effort and renovation that will bring new high-tech exhibits to teach science and technology to local youth. G.WIZ will be closed starting Sept. 4, with the construction of interactive exhibits about science, math, space and geology expected to last at least two months. The nonprofit’s construction will be funded in large part by a new fundraising campaign. Nearly everything, from learning “zones” to individual exhibits, is up for sponsorship.
The HuB, takes a new approach at marketing Sarasota to a younger demographic. A social enterprise/startup incubator, The HuB fosters media and tech companies in addition to producing many of its own quirky media projects. Their new web- based sitcom, Saratopia, is a parody in the style of the wildly popular series, Portlandia. Local 20-30 somethings star in the shorts, poking fun at local politics, a recent parking meter fiasco, the boutique culture and Sarasota’s retirement haven reputation. They are also putting the finishing touches on their impressive new headquarters in Downtown Sarasota where they offer a business commune of sorts. The HuB will offer office spaces that share video and sound studios, a community lounge and bar. “We want to provide a central gathering place for entrepreneurs and creative people to meet and share ideas,” says Rick Swier Jr, a founder of The HuB. Q For decades, you traveled the world and visited almost every city in North America. Why did you choose the Sarasota area as your home?
I feel very fortunate to have been able to travel the world. It is true that for two decades I visited between 140 and 160 towns each year. Ultimately, so much travel changed my perspective regarding what I wanted to find within my residence’s location. What became most important to me is a location I could enjoy year round - this means, a place where I can relax, raise my family and still challenge myself through activities I enjoy.
Q I know you are a “go-getter” in business and in your personal life. What types of things do you enjoy doing?
Yes, I have always been considered a “go-getter.” I had a full time job while I attended RIT. After 4 years of 12 – 16 hour days I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology. I later earned an MBA while working full time as the Production Manager at a manufacturing facility for Shering-Plough Pharmaceutical Corporation. After these two accomplishments I moved up the corporate ladder very quickly. I became Vice President of a large printing and packaging
corporation at the age of 32. Later, I took the position as Vice President and General Manager of five divisions of a publicly traded company.
My personal life is also filled with activities . I enjoy downhill ski racing, sky diving, scuba diving, horseback riding and more. I love the satisfaction achieved by accomplishing difficult things. Along the same line, I have always loved fast cars. My attitude is that when it comes to cars, faster is better! For people like me, who enjoy fast cars and fine automobiles, Sarasota is a wonderful location to live. I, myself, own a rare Lotus Esprit. It is one of just 175 hand made in 1997. turbo charged V8 and is capable of speeds in excess of 175 mph. I often visit the many car shows in the Sarasota area to display my Lotus and view a variety of fine cars.
Q Where do you find a place to drive such a car in Sarasota?
If you mean at 175+ miles per hour, I don’t think I will be admitting to those speeds on the street! However, I am a licensed SCCA competition driver and Sarasota is just an hour away from Sebring International Raceway. This is one of my favorite tracks and I often take a day or two to spend time driving there. Of course, for those who prefer other forms of racing, we also have Bradenton Motorsports Park, and the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. We are also just a few hours away from the race tracks of Daytona, Homestead and Moroso.
For those who love cars but are not interested in racing, we have the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, many regularly scheduled car shows on St Armand’s Circle and the Sarasota Exotic Car Fest. Of course, we also have a number of fine car dealerships, from Mercedes to Lamborghini. Recently, a Lotus dealership opened on Clark Road and I was able to drive the new Evora. What a blast! A Lotus dealership was one element we were missing in Sarasota. Now, we have everything, beaches, culture and now Lotus.

The Partnership for Collier’s Future Economy, an arm of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, signed what it described as a historic agreement with Florida Gulf Coast University in Estero and the Horizon Council, a public-private partnership that advises Lee County commissioners on economic development. The partners will share resources and work together to provide the information sought by professionals who help businesses relocate and expand.

RESIDENTIAL MARKET REPORT
In reviewing the existing state of the Florida real-estate market, the outlook is currently positive and improving, reflecting a nationwide trend. Contributing factors to this housing recovery include the fact that the average on a 30-year mortgage is still at 3.55%. This rate is just slightly above 3.49%, the lowest rate ever on record.
Homes are also selling more quickly, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). In July 2012, the average time it took to sell a home in Florida was 69 days, a decrease in time of 29.6% from 98 days in July 2011. The current time a property is on the market is well within the range of historic norms for a balanced market, according to the NAR. Lawrence Yun, the NAR chief economist states, “As inventory has tightened, homes have been selling more quickly. A notable shortening of time on market began this spring, and this has created a general balance between home buyers and sellers in much of the country. This equilibrium is supporting sustained price growth, and homes that are correctly priced tend to sell quickly, while those that aren’t often languish on the market.”
According to the National Association of Realtors, Canadians continue to buy up real estate in Southwest Florida, motivated by bargain prices, the strength of their dollar and their harsh winters. Phil Wood, president of John R. Wood Realtors in Naples, says “Canadians are realizing that if they want to do something, they need to jump in and do it.” In the U.S., about 24 percent of foreign buyers are now Canadians — making them the largest share. Canadian buyers account for more than double the rate they did in 2007, according to recent report by the
National Association of Realtors.
Another encouraging aspect of the housing market is that the asking prices for homes in Florida is also on the rise, up 2.3% in August, compared to the prices from last August (Trulia). Foreclosure rates are also declining, however unevenly, across the nation. Nationwide fewer homes were placed under foreclosure, compared to August of last year, according to RealtyTrac Inc.
In August, $187 million in mortgage debt was forgiven for Florida homeowners in the first phase of the multi-billion dollar settlement between the nation’s five largest banks and state attorneys general. This was part of the information released in the initial progress report on the landmark agreement, which also included how the banks are being required to furnish $25 billion in mortgage relief nationwide.
The possible changes in mortgage codes have not deterred an optimistic trend in consumer sentiment regarding the housing market. The current positive market forces are reflected in Fannie Mae’s August 2012 National Housing Survey, where researchers established that consumer sentiment regarding the housing market is continuing its modestly positive trend. In this survey, 18% of consumers surveyed said that it’s a good time to sell, marking the highest level since the survey’s inception. In accordance with these findings, more than 80% of real estate brokerage executives, polled in a survey by RISMedia, say they are “more confident” about the housing market now than they were in January. 65% of these same executives are also “confident” the housing market will continue to improve in the next year.

This summer my family and I had the opportunity to vacation at the new Clearwater Hyatt Beach Resort & Spa. As we unpacked our bags, we were mesmerized by the views from our luxurious two bedroom gulf-front suite. The suites at the Clearwater Hyatt were more on the scale of a luxury condominium rather than a hotel room. Situated on the corner of the building both bedrooms offered glorious gulf-front views. With two bedrooms, living and dining areas, full kitchen, gulf front balcony and two spacious bathrooms, there was more than enough space for my family to spend time together as well as allowing each of us to have our quiet moments.
While the suite was impressive, the on-site amenities were just as spectacular. The food, the spa, Camp Hyatt…where do I begin? Let’s start with the food. From morning to night, the dining options were consistently delicious.
For breakfast, we enjoyed the generous breakfast buffet dining on the balcony overlooking the ocean. And in the evening, the SHOR restaurant takes on a warm glow, which highlights the elegant furnishings. A marvelous spot to watch the sunset over the ocean while savoring a gourmet meal. Even room service didn’t disappoint, they rushed up a delicious chocolate cake and bottle of wine for my husband and I to enjoy after our children had gone to bed.
With such amazing accommodations and amenities, the Hyatt has also invested in hiring a superb staff. The executive chef, Richard Preston, is world renowned. He was gracious enough to offer us some insight into Hyatt’s new dining initiatives. Hyatt chefs are allowed to develop their menus with freedom rarely available at luxury hotel restaurants. Mr. Preston explained that Hyatt gives him the freedom to develop his menus, allowing him to take advantage of local offerings, more in line with a local restaurant than a hotel chain. The result is a diverse menu tailored to the Florida market, using local produce and fish reeled in from the sea just that morning. In addition, Hyatt has revamped its children’s menu to offer healthier, playful choices for children such as Top Your Own Taco, Waffle

Of course they don’t just cater to one just sense at the Clearwater Hyatt Resort. Admittedly, the Sandava Spa was the highlight of my visit. The lounge alone impressed me with a sense of serenity. Imagine a two-story room with massive windows overlooking the harbor and a wall of water cascading in the background…who wouldn’t want to stay here for the day? After my deep tissue message, I received a pedicure while I relaxed on the table. Now, that’s service.
Floating out the door, I went to meet my family for a walk down the beach. My husband, a Florida native, marveled at the changes to Clearwater Beach. Much improved since he last visited several years ago, the city has revamped the Clearwater Beach boardwalk and parks. The boardwalk now serves as the epicenter of entertainment for visitors of all ages. The area is lively with restaurants, playgrounds, bouncy houses, bungee jumping and more.
My children also thoroughly enjoyed their vacation and the time they spent at Camp Hyatt. For weary parents who would like a few moments to relax on vacation, this will surely be one of your favorite features. Camp Hyatt is just that, a camp for kids with fun activities. Energetic young camp directors play games and plan art projects for children 4-12 years old. They have sessions for half days, full days, and even a movie by the pool in the evenings.
By the end of our stay at the Clearwater Hyatt Beach Resort and Spa, Mom was relaxed, Dad was impressed, and both of the children had been completely entertained. It received the highest rating for a Gibson family vacation, four enthusiastic thumbs up!

It’s no surprise that when we seek out something sparkling and brand new, we often gravitate to something timeless, classic and more ancient than ourselves. Our attraction to open courtyards, tile roofs and warm colors reflect a style of architecture dating back to ancient civilizations deeply ingrained into our definition of home. The early history of this style, Mediterranean Design, is rooted in the various regions, countries and cultures that surround the Mediterranean Sea. Most notable, of those that eventually conquered various corners of the globe, are Italian and Latin or Spanish.
Just as the romance language of Spanish has much in common with words and phrases in Italian, so does the architecture. To most of us, there is very little difference in this Mediterranean Style of Design. But when studied a bit closer, little
differences can be seen. Today, a mix of these styles can be found mostly in California and Florida, thanks to the progressive vision of such architects as August Geiger and Addison Mizner. Their view in the early 1900s, a classic form designed to accommodate their lifestyle, tastes and climate back then, is just as relevant and in demand today. Homes and buildings grew in height based on square and rectangular plans. Massive front elevations were covered by stucco, holding up flat or low-pitched terra cotta and rolled tile roofs. Arches sprang up everywhere inside and out with tile-capped parapet walls bursting through the tops of structures, and heavy details commonly accentuating door openings. The best-of-the-best blended in balconies and window grilles made of wrought iron or wood. Classical architectural elements, mixed with a little Spanish Renaissance, Spanish
Colonial and even some Beaux-Arts and Art Deco features developed in the early 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. These elements, stirred together with lush gardens and cascading fountains, gave us the evolution of what we now call Mediterranean Style.
To most of us, it’s all beauty. But to the discerning eye there are slight differences between Spanish Mediterranean and Italian Renaissance styles. Spanish is a bit simpler, with cleaner lines and massive structure. Also, the Spanish look has a lower pitch to the roofline that looks thicker and heavier. The Italian style has a more deliberate and less random massive look and feel to it. The Italian fine points are more feminine, with delicate detail and rational, balanced symmetry versus the manly, thick rambling freeform expansion of the Spanish expression.

As neighborhoods grew, tastes changed to reflect what was popular at the time. The movie industry exploded and what was seen of California spread across the country as it was viewed on the big screen. The Mediterranean revival became recharged again and again as the old world styles became more and more fantastic. Florida developers jumped on the bandwagon with marketing and promotion, pushing the fairytale life of the ancient Spanish village to a locale in tropical paradise.
A few tasteful decorative columns became too many posts to count. The symmetrical and rational arched window at key locations became every window in every location. The homes got a steroid injection of whimsy and clay barrel roofs were attached to more clay barrel roofs surrounded by wrought iron and spindly gates everywhere. Courtyards gave birth to bell towers, which made a reason for more archways, awnings, porches, balconies and more carved stonework. And connecting it all was more marble and tile than anyone had ever seen before. Then suddenly, the depression hit our nation and the revival of revivals was forced to slow down a bit.
The passage of time and the resulting new circumstances affected a shift. As real estate exploded in Florida throughout the last half of the 1900s, a bit of the excess settled and became refined; the economies of massive developments dictated design. We all craved the sunshine and the ability to bask outdoors while still being in our own homes. We fell in love with the curves and arches that greeted us as we walked up the steps and through our front doors. The Caribbean colors on the rough cement walls made our brand new homes look ancient. We paused to stare at the hand painted tile, mounted to the risers of elaborately carved staircases. Warm, earthy, rustic red roofs tickled us, especially if surrounding a turret, formerly
used to see approaching savages from a distance. Towers, chimneys, tiny arched windows and endless rustic planters resting on countless jutting shelves, suggested that once again, no expense is spared and a complete lack of skimping on detail.
Balconies everywhere! And with so much beauty to see and great weather to absorb, the outside must be appreciated from the inside at all times.
Today, the Mediterranean Design and origins of Spanish influence are most recognized by the abundance of ornamental ironwork everywhere. It’s on the light fixtures, staircases and the handrails, the grills, knobs and handles that cover drawers, windows and doors. It undeniably declares that we have successfully brought the old world into the new world.
Just as with the Spanish of old, we now share a common mind to relax around the decorative tiled patio, surrounded by open-arched arcades, laughing and talking with friends or quietly reclining and listening to nature, late into the evening.
