What’s the big picture?Basically, we layout designers can make pages look as sharp and bold as anyone wants, but that never works well with the type of writing people submit.

Our task is to make the content submitted look as consistent and professional as possible.

Most publications make intense use of quality illustrations, which, again, we don’t have

reliable access to. Literary magazines usually have minimal layout and let the pieces speak for

themselves.

We have to find some other way.

Tips and tricks for faking the professional look*•Distinguish between Serif, Sans-serif and

Decorative fonts. Serif and Sans-serif fonts contrast well against each other.

•Stick to a small set of fonts. When two fonts are similar-but-not-quite, it looks really bad.

•Use multiple versions of the same font to add emphasis without making things look cheesy.

•Use contrasting fonts for titles and body text. It works.

WHEN IN DOUBT, ORGANIZE EVERYTHING.Cramming text together somehow makes stuff pretty, especially if you have a good choice of fonts. Combine it with white space and images and there you have a perfectly decent layout. Satisfy that raging OCD within you, and add little stylish touches while you’re at it. One think I’ve seen many designers do is include a little symbol at the end of an article. tl;dr

Also, remember to use lines! And change fonts! Placing the text box as though it is centered, while making the text itself left-aligned, makes the page more interesting.

Four men were arguing about an empty tomb they had dug up. One of them wanted to blow it to dust to see if there was anything hidden. “This is the stupidest idea that you have thought of yet.” “I will take that as a compliment instead of an insult.” “It wasn't supposed to be, it was supposed to be the truth.” “So? Like I care.” “You should.” “But I don’t care.” “Are we going to do this or not?” “You mean bomb this tomb, not sure we should.” “You could walk away.” “Too late.” The fourth man that had not said anything morphed into a dark shadow, impaled the first then ripped the second into blood, gore and shreds. The third had managed to take two steps before he was decapitated. The shadow then proceeded to consume their flesh and souls.

““Can he stay mommy?” The little boy asked his mother. “No Tommy, it might have fleas.” “But mummy I want it!” “No Tommy, you can’t keep the dog.” “Mommy the dog just bit me!” “See, I told you so, now you might get...””She never got to fin-ish her sentence; her throat was torn out by the dog, who was the shadow. Creepy story huh?”  3 boys sat around a campfire sharing scary stories. They were switching stories, but without knowing that some-one was watching them, until too late. Day after day reports came out of missing peo-ple, leaving no trace behind. The killings started in a small village, then spread to the rest of the world. No one was safe. But one little boy was ignorant of the dangers, and even wanted to see for himself what the danger was, and meet it face to face. Little does he know that he will get his wish, and a twist...

“I bet I can kick that loser’s b...” “Geneos, what dreadful language.” “Fine then, I bet a I can beat the killer.” “Geneos do you have anything better to do than think of such violent thoughts?” The student, Geneos is a brave, but absolutely stupid child, his red salt and pepper hair and his football player’s body, it makes him look like he always wants to fight. “Geneos I don’t think you should say that, what if you were killed?” His friend, Sacer, is the polar

opposite of Geneos, with a mushroom head, thin body and leather shoes. He is a genius and always looks before he jumps, but a leaf could scare him. “That’s because you are scared of everything Sacer! Since he hasn’t come ten it just shows that it is scared of me. How can you counter that?” “Well, if he hasn’t come maybe it’s because he is killing someone else.” “You’re too smart for your own good.” “Wait, class is start-ing, be quiet.” The teacher was rambling on about something, Geneos couldn’t quite catch it, being the bad student he is. He was thinking about the shadow, and if he actually met it would he be able to keep up his bravado? Probably not, but then again no one would know, we would all be dead, right? Oh well, I think I should listen be-fore the stupid teacher, what’s her name? Whatever her name is, I should listen before I get asked a question. The shadow was watching a house, it was too bright and lively for it’s liking, it want-ed to destroy it. The light in the world was it’s enemy, every one who liked light was his enemy. Everything in the world was it’s enemy. It wanted a world of darkness, and for that, no light. The one thought that was going through this darkness-incarnate was to kill, to kill for the feeling of life slowly slipping away in its jaws. It was the dark before death.

Geneos was scared of the shadow. He checked every corner in his room. he wanted to leave the lights on, to scare away the shadow. He was scared.

The shadow was hungry, it jumped up the window.

He left all the lights on and covered him-self with blankets.

It burst through a door and attacked the people inside.

He heard a loud crash and screams.

It knelt down to eat the flesh.

He opened his bedroom door.

It drank the blood.

He went into his parent’s room.

Time slowed down as he saw the shadow eating his parents. The shadow saw him standing at the doorway. He ran. The shad-ow ran after him. He snatched the phone up and called Sacer. Voice message. The shadow was next to him. Geneos grabbed the lighter and lit the roof on fire.

A day later reports were made that a charred body, black pieces of fabric and 2 corpses barely seen as bodies were found in a burnt house. The pieces of black fabric emitted a sinister aura. The one person to touch this went insane and killed 20 people before killing himself.
