SiS – Science for the benefit of Society and Society for the benefit of Science
Diversity of context and cultures – and a lot in common:• all sciences• a variety of societal actors should be involved• rewards to individuals and institutions necessary • communication is (only) part of the answer – a need for change of culture in the scientific community • sufficient funding must be ensured• evaluation of quantity, quality and impact a key
issue

Learning and improving
Principles• common views on SiS are emerging in Europe• learn from each other and share best practices• join capacities to develop common needs• experiment
Instruments• networks sharing experiences• common agreement(s)• joint development of indicators, methods of evaluation, impact assessment etc• research on SiS, its importance and impact

Rewarding Researchers and Institutions
Introduce evaluation methods and indicators• Activities• Resources – financial and human• Impact measurements• Indicators – simple, transparent, accepted
Make SiS intrinsic part of funding and merits• SiS requirements at grant application and in reports• Use SiS as a differentiator in peer reviews• Start to collect data on SiS• Allocate money for SiS in grants and for SiS-promoting activities• Consider SiS for promotion, salary and funding

Conclusions Much is done, more is needed, development required:
• Embedded in culture + responding to new challenges
• Clear Commitment to SiS in policy and strategy
• SiS activities and processes with - Quality, transparency and experiments- Researchers rewarded for SiS achievements- Networks sharing experiences and best practices- Jointly develop systems for indicators, evaluations
and impact assessment
